Diner Reviews
  • "Had very good roast duck, potatoe and parsnip puree so-so. Did not have wine ordered an suggested alternative was passable, but not great. Service very good overall. 4. Stars.ll"

  • "Food reasonably good but hardly outstanding. A RIDICULOUSLY overpriced wine list. Live music a huge annoyance."

  • "My husband and I traveled about 100 miles to shop, have dinner in Ann Arbor, and spend the night. We have dined at the Earle before and enjoyed past experiences. We felt that the meal was good this time, but not exceptional. The service was acceptable, but the servers were not especially friendly. The wine steward barely spoke to us and came off as extremely rude - which was disappointing. A restaurant with such an extensive wine list should have a good sommelier who might ask questions about wine preferences and recommend a good bottle. Instead, we ended up with a wine that was very mediocre and overpriced. Because of this, we wish we had chosen a different restaurant. I am not sure we will go back to the Earle - not as good as before."

  • "We don't go to The Earle regularly - just as a special treat, for birthdays, etc. We've gone there probably 10-12 times over 12-15 years and have always said 'we should go there more often' after visiting. The food is consistently excellent and I am amazed that I've ordered the same thing over the years and found it exactly the same (a good thing) each visit. Guests we've brought with us have always been surprised by the quality of the food, wine and service. It is a bit expensive for us middle class folks but we try to go whenever we can afford it."

  • "The service was excellent and the food wonderful. I'd definitely return. We also found it to be pricey, but not unduly so. The only hesitation in giving this restaurant rave reviews for the food is that it was quite rich, the sauce on the scallops very sweet, and I'm guessing much butter used on the whipped potatoes and other vegetables. In other words, a little old-fashioned sensibilities in terms of excellent food preparation--personally, our tastes have moved to fresher ingredients, and overall healthier approaches to food, like less salt, fat and sugar. But overall, it was still a fun treat for a special occasion."

  • "This has and still is our signature place to go for special occasions and when we want a great meal wine and calming ambience. We also love there bistros wine bar, very popular. Love-love live jazz piano sets when scheduled, service is great and trust the some sommelier completely, who has been there for decades. 5-STAR and always a smart choice. Once you're there the world outside melts away."

  • "Food was better than I remembered it from previous visits. Service was not very attentive to our large party--not terrible, but not first class--even though the restaurant was not very crowded. We had to wait for our entrees and got water refills only after we'd finished eating. Our server commented on one of our diners' "attitude" after he made a harmless remark. I would go back for the food, but the service at West End Grill, for instance, is much better."

  • "The service was VERY LACKLUSTER!! It took 1 hour to receive our food once ordered without as much as "I'm sorry for the wait"!! We complained to the manager and he did what he could to rectify the situation. Serving sizes seemed small."

  • "The Earle has been a restaurant my now wife, and I consider "our" restaurant. We spent our first valentines together at the Earle and have been going back at least once every year. Making this year our fifth year. Phenomenal food, great service, calm, relaxing, romantic atmosphere, love the rotating menu. I'd suggest trying something different everytime, you won't be disappointed. A bit pricey, but like I said, we go once, maybe twice a year, so it's worth it."

  • "Fabulous wine list and Steve knows it well. Food is always great. Even better when Shelley is there!"

  • "We began with the great happy hour mussels and wine in the cozy bar. Then delicious smoked salmon appetizer and entrees. Veal and filet mignon entrees were very well prepared and presented. Ambience in this restaurant is beautiful."

  • "The food is tasty, but the portions have gotten significantly smaller than they were in the past and prices have remained the same. My beef tenderloin was maybe 3 ounces, and my companion's pasta was in a bowl I would use for a can of Progresso soup. Service was very good, we were never rushed, and we did enjoy the music."

  • "It had been a while since I dined at the Earle. It had always boasted elegant dining, but it was anything but. No table clothes, wait staff in jeans and polos. Prices were still at elegant levels, however. A menu favorite had always been escargot, but I found it was recently removed from the menu (although it still shows on the website). Main entrée was good, however the rest of the plate (veggies/starch) was lackluster. Overall, the inattentiveness of the wait staff and the ambience of a bar scene versus elegant dining was a disappointment."

  • "Expensive, so definitely a special-occasion place, but wonderful atmosphere, food, and outstanding wine list. They also had live (background) music on a weeknight, which added to the atmosphere."

  • "Guaranteed good food and service. Wine list beyond compare"

  • "We went to The Earle for a romantic night out & the setting was perfect. It's a great place for a quiet time with someone you love - except if either of you are foodies :P We ordered the grilled salmon main & beef tenderloin. The salmon was not very well-flavoured and the tenderloin flavour gets a little tiring to stomach after a while. To their credit, they took back the tenderloin dish and did not charge us for it. The service is excellent. They are considerate and want to ensure that you have a good experience. The dessert was outstanding. We ordered the hazelnut souffle and chocolate decadence cake. Simply yum! The wine selection is great as well. Note: Go there for wine, dessert & impeccable service."

  • "You can count the number of truly great fine dining experiences in southeastern Michigan on one hand. The Earle tops the list with its impeccable menu items perfect atmosphere and great background jazz music that enhances the dining experience. Perfect for that special occasion."

  • "We had a wonderful birthday dinner for our teenage daughter. Both children appreciated the quiet, grown-up atmosphere and French and Italian dishes on the menu. The waiter was excellent, anticipating and taking care of our needs and giving helpful suggestions and explanations. The cassoulet was delicious, as was the chicken, the lamb chops, and beef roquefort. We also enjoyed the pear tarte and creme brulee on the dessert menu."

  • "I have been to the Earle multiple times and the service the last two times has been horrible. This last time we had two different servers "working together", but they couldn't get it together. We waited at least a 20 mins after we asked for just a few more before ordering, and when our food finally came one of the dishes was totally the wrong one. Thankfully the amazing food makes up for what ever is happeneing to the service lately."

  • "A great place overall. Perfect for a romantic evening, a special event, or just a happy hour drink and appetizer. A nice selection of entrees and a very nice wine selection along with a knowledgeable staff to help you pair with your meal or find a wine the caters to your preferences. Reservations are best for weekends. Also great if you or a member of your party have food allergies or aversions."

  • "Steve, the sommelier, is fantastic. Has assembled an outstanding list of wine at reasonable prices. The food is always solid, well prepared and interesting. Service timely, professional and friendly. Great restaurant. Our go to place in Ann Arbor."

  • "The service was less than stellar. We were seated, water was brought right away took 15 - 20 mins to see a waitress, lucky we were ready to order by the time she showed up. No apology It took another 15 mins to bring a coke. app came (escargot) it was good. waitress never came back. No complaints with the quality of the food filet and sea scallops however veggie side looked like something that red lobster would serve (a slawed shredded something unidentifiable that was cold and did NOT even smell appetizing) with no seasoning not even salt or butter. Split a raspberry almond cake was good. Dinner was after 700 pm on a Wednesday the place was less than full, there was no reason for such poor service especially at the prices that are charged"

  • "I am quite fond of The Earle because it's a nice place to have dinner and chat with friends or out-of-town guests. On March 5th, it was the occasion of my birthday and we had invited a couple whom we had actually introduced to each other quite a few years ago. The food and wine were quite good but the service was just plain terrible. I was more than amazed that the waitress never even asked if we wanted dessert, especially since this was a rather celebrative occasion. When we realized that the waitress was not likely to interact with us at any time soon, our female guest eventually yelled at her to give us a check as she was passing by. This finally produced the desired result. It does make me pause before selecting The Earle in the future."

  • "The sea scallops were good, but the sauce was a little salty & the dish could have been warmer. My wife raved about her whitefish."

  • "The Earle continues to deliver a very enjoyable dining out experience. The lighting is just right - you can read the menu without a flashlight, yet it still provides a romantic ambiance. The food and the service were outstanding."

  • "Went there night after Valentines. It was great. Food was wonderful. Really nice wine selection. We had dinner reservations around 6 and were seated immediately upon arrival. However it did get quite crowded by the time we were finished. A small trio was warming up as we were leaving. Too bad we didn't realize there was live music; may have gotten a later reservation. We had a really great time."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner on Valentine's day. The food and service was top notch and the wine list is amazing! Everything about our appetizer, entrees and dessert was perfect. Really a great find!"

  • "The waitress was pleasant, knew the food well, admitted her ignorance about the wine list and promptly sent the sommelier over to help us with a decision. The wine we had was a pleasant surprise, fit my palette well, while still being a little different than what I'm used to. The food was well paired with the sides, well prepared, unique, and cooked just right. A little later in the evening some friends of ours met us for some after dinner drinks, of which the Earle has quite the selection. I was particularly pleased with the selection of coffee based alcoholic beverages. When the evening is early, and I've already run into the sandman, I appreciate a selection larger than Irish coffee or vodka and red bull. I only have a few letters lef"

  • "The Earle is one of the great Ann Arbor restaurants; always pleasant, great food, fine destination. The menu is modest in size, but everything is delightful. My long time favorite is the duck breast, sauteed medium rare: fabulous. Recently I had the linguini with scallops which was excellent. And the wine list is probably the best in the State, with a superb and knowledgeable sommelier. Great place."
