Diner Reviews
  • "My buddy and I just happened to find Dog & Cask during an Internet search. Glad we did. We enjoyed a nice meal at the bar. The bartender Joshua (big mustache!) was very friendly and informative. We saw the hand-pumped cask beers on the menu and went right for them. While an acquired taste (esp. the room temp), the two D&C were serving were outstanding. They only serve them in 12 oz glasses (Joshua said he would never drink in anything larger than a 12 oz glass - which he seemed to live by as he was tasting several beers in a very small glass most of the time we were there). The food was really good. We started with hummus, the scotch egg, and pastrami short rib (Joshua's recommendation and it was a good one). Lots of whiskey, too."

  • "It has a nice/cozy area to the side, which could be called a "library." There is a fireplace there and it is private (as compared to the rest of the place). Very open with large bar in the middle and seating all around. Good service, but ask for the bread early if you come in starving (it takes time to heat, they said)! Food was really good. We were surprised at the place; with its name we were thinking it would be more craft beer-focused, but it leaned more to a fine dining setting with local beers and clever cocktails."

  • "I really want to love this place. Great atmosphere, fun & different menu selections, and great beer selection as always. Too bad the service was dismal, which seems to be the norm these days. How hard is it to remember who ordered what instead of having 3 people run around the table asking, "who had the chicken". Also, they did not have my reservation which was made on Open Table, so luckily I called about a week before to ask a question and re-made my reservation with a live person."

  • "We came here for a date night but it would be equally good with a group of friends or for a work social as it has different areas, ranging from the bar, the resturant, an English pub nook and a private dining room. The menu was quirky with excellent choices. We stuck to the small plates and the desserts. They were sublime. Better than the meal I had at the saddle river inn the week before. There was an extensive beer menu that included English 'warm' beer and some cask aged cocktails. All in all a fantastic find."

  • "We enjoy their beer selection. Been here twice and the food has been consistent. Everything is well flavored and prepared. Keep it up and we will be back."

  • "Went on Sunday after a matinee. Not busy. The wife and I shared a cheese board and a meat board. Very good and interesting. Also, presented nicely. Many, many drink options with beer and whiskey flights and special drinks. A FUN place."

  • "We are new to the area and have driven by the restaurant often so we wanted to give it a try. We started with the hummus appetizer, a craft beer and some wine. We both had a hamburger (which they don't cook to order but they were delicious). It was both vibrant and cozy - a nice dinner scene."

  • "Went with my girlfriend and another couple. Between the service, food, wine, and beer, the nite couldn't have gone better. To all thise that don't like the different food selection and think it's over priced, please don't go here anymore. Will be a regular stop from now on!"

  • "This menu is not for everyone. The three of us split three small plates for a taste. We had pork belly, homemade gnocchi and pastrami short rib. The tastes and combinations were great and we asked for the menu back so we could see all the ingredients. One of us had the baby chicken with polenta, one had the strip steak with mashed potatoes and the other one had the lentil soup with lemon grass and scotch egg. We loved every morsel including every single side and even took leftovers home. We had a wine flight, a scotch flight and a raspberry harpoon. If you're looking for burgers this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for great flavor sand something a little different. Put this on your list."

  • "This was not the place to eat for us. We could not understand the very small choice of food selections . The entrees were very expensive and small. The wine and beer selections were however varied and good. If you are looking for a place to have a few drinks, the dog and cask is the place. Do not bring your appetite."

  • "This place is great for a microbrew and bite. Fine food and decent beer and liquor selection. Service is excellent, bartenders fun and knowledgable."

  • "Delicious selections and wonderful options. A surprising delight! For apps, we had the Scotch egg, grilled octopus (have to try this everywhere we can find it!), charcuterie platter and a couple of cheeses. Then for the main course, my handsome Valentine had the NY Strip (med rare - EXCELLENT) and I had the pork chop. Then we split desserts - the pear/apple cobbler and the sticky toffee pudding. Out of this world! Highly recommended! Service was fine (a little slower than we would have liked, but it was Valentine's Day and we were in no rush - thankfully!)."

  • "My husband and I went to The Dog & Cask for a Valentine's dinner. We went at peak dinner time, with reservations, and were seated immediately. The restaurant was crowded, but service was prompt and friendly. Our server was very knowledgeable and professional, as well as good-humored and fun. We enjoyed everything that we ordered, and I had possibly the best salmon that I've ever eaten. The beer selection was wonderful, and we enjoyed sampling several. Our server knew the ins and outs of each brew, and was helpful with selection (he even helped me narrow down a dessert cocktail to complement my dessert choice). We found the bill to be reasonable for the quality that we enjoyed. Portions aren't huge, but this isn't Applebee's."

  • "Valentines Day four course dinner beside a fireplace was fantastic! Our waiter, Jeff, was great. He knew the food and drink with great service. The courses are small any many. Started with the Tuna Tartare, a light first course spiced perfectly with a little heat from the jalapeño? The second course, octopus, topped the tuna for me. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly, great flavor and perfect texture. My wife loved the cavatelli. The steak and cod were just as great as the first two courses. All the plates were sized well and not too big. Desert came with champagne and French Press Coffee. The food alone was well worth the trip, but to sit beside the fireplace added to make the evening special and the desire for many return visits."

  • "Sorry to say, place is overrated . Portions are small, be prepared to shell out $$$ to fill your stomach. Food is ok. Not really feeling the atmosphere much."

  • "Very nice menu with different sides like parmesan fries. Many beers and wines to try. Delicious coffee served in a French Press. Glad I went and will go back."

  • "We went to Dog and Cask because friends of ours recommended the bourbon flights. The food is somewhat unusual, but wonderful. We loved everything we ordered. Our service was also wonderful and we had read that the service was bad. Our server was wonderful and very helpful. I also liked the fact that you could order a glass of wine or a 1/2 glass of wine. All in all, it was a very great night."

  • "If you're into watching a game at the bar, this is YOUR PLACE, but for dinner, eh. Waiter in bar area is miserable, food is only OK....beer & wine and atmosphere is good."

  • "Nice ambiance, food was fantastic and wait staff were friendly and accommodating. I didn't feel rushed at all which was nice and made my evening enjoyable! The octopus appetizer was tender and delicious. I also had the salad with a champagne dressing it was light and yummy. My entree which was the steak was outstanding! I savored every bite! Another family member (return diner) had the Pastrami short ribs and said it is the best thing on the menu! Only one suggestion is to add a kids menu as I had my 8 yr old with me. Kudos to Dog & Cask!!! I will be back ;)"

  • "Great concept in NJ. Loved the flights of bourbon. Jim, server, was extremely helpful with menu navigation and bourbon selection. We have recommended this restaurant to friends who are planning on going there Saturday night."

  • "A gastro pub has to have a good beer and wine list, and this one has it. Lots of options by the glass, and are priced reasonably for flights of wine or beer. The whiskey menu is also extensive and enough reasonably priced options for doing flights as well. The menu isn't huge, but it's varied enough to suit most palates. Many of the dishes also have half-portion options, so you can try more dishes - the appetizers plus dinner. I'd highly recommend the pastrami short ribs. Yes, it's as good as it sounds."

  • "Great time-food and beer! We've were looking forward to the opening and now we're looking forward to going back!"

  • "We did a combination of the "small plates" and larger portions for 4 of us Everyting was delicious but I felt the portions were rather small for the prices. For example the main short rib dish had 3 small ribs slices. I think that is small for $27. Also there are still some improvements required. Bread was not served. The Pate didn't come with the toast - we had to ask for it. Serving spoons were not provided. With some fine tuning this could be really good. And the beer selection is GREAT."

  • "We were excited to try this place, especially for the craft beer menu. The cauliflower soup was excellent, but too many of the other dishes were too busy. The issue was too many flavors competing in one dish. The desserts were both disappointing (sponge cake and sticky pudding). The only other highlight was the French press coffee (you get a good amount for the proce and it was delicious). The biggest disappointment was that they would not allow us to taste a beer before ordering (we have NEVER seen this before). We will not be returning any time soon."

  • "We sat down for dinner and gave our order to the waiter at 8:30. Our first course arrived at 10:00 and it was not complete. No bread was served. We had to go to the bar to get addtional drinks and observed other patrons leave their table before getting their meals. The waiter was attempting to "put out fires". It was evident that the kitchen imploded and could't handle the crowd. It was midnight when we finished eating. The worst dining experience we ever had!"

  • "Horrible service. We had reservations for 8:00 p.m. and were not seated until 9:00. It took another 30 minutes for first round of drinks to appear. By 10:30 p.m. our entrees were no where in sight and we left. They had plenty of hosts apologize for the kitchen being "backed up" but apparently not enough kitchen or wait staff. I went from our table to the bar myself to place drink orders to avoid waiting 30 minutes for our server to do so. Every table around us appeared to have the same horrible experience. Do not dine here unless you have no self respect."

  • "We had dinner and drinks, food was great, drinks were too. My husband like the cask-aged cocktails, and I got nice choices of beer on draught. The place got crowded and noisy as the night went on-- I think they need more staff for the weekends, because they got a bit overwhelmed. Some servers tried to deliver food to us that wasn't ours, but everything we ordered, we loved."

  • "sign outside says craft brew and yet no craft beers available when my husband and i arrived. there was not an issue w/ one tap. no draft beer available at all because a pump was broken. it did eventually get fixed but who wants a craft beer after your evening started w/ wine. mediocre unpolished service. the only thing i did like was that you could order a smaller version of the entrees so you could feel comfortable ordering an app and dinner and not feeling completely stuffed when done. bottom line, it had a strange and very limited menu. my husband did eventually get one of their craft beers though it was served in a disappointingly small glass. don't bother."

  • "Since the opening of Dog & Cask I've seen the parking lot full and was looking forward to trying out a new place. My husband was very excited about a craft beer bar. The inside seems to lack a vision- the bar area is small and the two sides of the restaurant aren't sure what they are. We sat to the right of the bar and it felt more like a sushi restaurant then a gastro pub. The menu is strange it's neither fancy nor pub food. I ordered the burger and it came out almost completely cold, the others at the table said the food was just ok. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and the drinks both cocktails and the beer were great. We had a good time despite the food and décor. I doubt Dog & Cask will last more than 18 months."

  • "Very very loud. Hard to talk no separation from bar crowed and sit down table crowed. Menu was a little Confusing, but was so loud it was hard to ask questions. Menu needs a little expanding also. I had burger was very good. And our waitress was very good, not one mistKe for a party of 14. Open table reservation was very easy and perfect on table."

  • "We went there for my husbands birthday and the wine and beer selection were amazing. The food on the other had waist good. The soup came out cold, the food descriptions were not accurate, the steak wasnt cooked to requested temp and potatoes were under done. We also had the most boring of waiters. He was more interested in the hockey game on the TV then with us and when we complained he just said "OK, sorry". If you just want a drink its great but the food and service were not worth the price."

  • "We dined on the 2nd night they were open. The service was slow (3-hour dinner for 2) but I assume this was just because it is new and really we didn't mind all that much. Everything was delicious, especially the sucking pig. Definitely will be going here again! I just wish they would reinstate Bistro 55's duck confit grilled cheese..."

  • "I went to The Dog & Cask with my husband and a friend. We were seated immediately, even though our reservation was right in the middle of the dinner rush. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive, and seemed to know the menu and the bar well. There was lots of conversation around us, but no one at our table ever had trouble hearing the other, or had to raise their voice to be heard. It was lively, but no too loud. The food was absolutely delicious, and the pairings enhanced the experience. We ate, we drank, we ate and drank some more, then had dessert. The final very pleasant surprise was how reasonable the bill was. Perhaps my only complaint was that it was just a bit too dark, which made it a little hard to read the menu."
