A word from The Derby
The Derby is more than a restaurant. Established in 1922, it has been family owned and operated since 1951. It is a grand museum showcasing some of horse racing's greatest moments. Diners are invited to take a break from the rush of modern life and travel back to the time of George Woolf, Seabiscuit and relive the excitement of The Race of the Century. We excel in offering the best grades of meat and extremely fresh seafood prepared by our longtime executive chef that would delight even the most discriminating of taste. Some of the menu highlights include the Bacon Wrap Filet, Delmonico New York, Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. We offer a wide selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass. Relax and enjoy a fine cognac or single malt scotch on our patio, or take in a sporting event on one of our three new plasma screen television sets. Dining at The Derby can only be compared to the feeling of holding the winning ticket when you smile and know that you made the right bet.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was exceptional. We had the chateaubriand. and baked Alaska for desert. Excellent service and quiet and nice Ambience. Took another couple with us and they were very impressed"

  • "Enjoyed another lovely dining experience celebrating a special birthday. Cocktails & hot yummy cheese garlic bread began our evening, followed with the Pick 6 Sampler appetizer (nice variety sampler) thoroughly enjoyed by the 4 of us. The Rack of Lamb was done perfectly & so good; the Tornadoes of Filet were excellent as usual & the French cut ribeye steak was good but felt the Tornadoes of Filet were done better. Our Pinot Noir complemented our meals well. Tim our server was great. And our flamming Baked Alaska topped the birthday celebration. It was a quiet Monday evening post racing season where we had a quiet but nice visit with each of our party."

  • "The food and service were both excellent. There was so much food that each of us took half of our dinner home.... and it was great the next day! Love the old touch of red tuck and roll booths and good prices to go along with the food. Steak and seafood....good combos."

  • "I have been going to The Derby for many years for lunch and the service and food is always exceptional. The staff goes above and beyond expectations to make you feel at home and the food is over the top. These are just two reasons The Derby has been is business for all these years. If you have a chance, you must go there."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our evening dinner celebration of our daughter's birthday this past week. Nick, our server, was friendly & did not rush us as we had a chance to enjoy our cocktails, delicious cheese garlic toast & appetizers (yummy fried calamari & filet wrapped asparagus) before ordering our dinners. 3 of us had the Tornadoes of Beef which were done perfectly & oh so delicious; 1 had the filet mignon which was very good. Leisurely enjoyed our dinners with a bottle of Gott's Cab & had a nice evening of conversation & visit. The atmosphere was lively but most enjoyable. Still able to converse & visit well. We finished with the Derby's flamming Baked Alaska with coffee & after dinner drinks and left totally satisfied & happy."

  • "Celebrated an early Father's Day with the family and this restaurant did not let us down. Our waiter Tim was fabulous and the food was spectacular. We ordered appetizers, seafood, steak, pork, 3 different desserts and each dish was better than the last. We will be adding The Derby to our list of go to restaurants. And my husband now has a new one to take customers to."

  • "I have been to The Derby many times in the past, but not for at least a year until the other night. Clearly there is a new chef whose food preparation is nowhere near that of his/her predecessor - while, the same time, prices have gone up. Paying more for less isn't appealing and I won't return. The ribeye steak I had, previously The Derby's premiere cut of beef, was tough and tasteless. Even my companion's filet mignon was, I believe, from a different meat supplier than The Derby used in the past, although the lobster in her Surf 'N Turf was good. I won't be back - there is too much fine competition to choose from."

  • "We were so pleased with everything about The Derby, from the history to the service to the food. The Chateaubriand for 2 was to die for! The service was excellent and the staff very friendly. We will definitely be returning."

  • "We were introduced to The Derby 20 years ago and have been returning ever since. We live 2 hours away, in Santa Barbara and the dining experience here is easily worth the drive and staying over at Embassy Suites next door. Long live The Derby!"

  • "my husband and i had a very special dinner at the derby with our very good newly engaged friends! we had an amazing corner booth and it was one of the best dinners in my memory. (i do have to say it was the company that put dinner over the top) we brought a bottle of wine with us, but did purchase a sparkling for a toast and an additional bottle to enjoy with starters. the dinner menu had a good variety and the wine list is full of some very delicious wine at rather moderate prices. over all i do believe everyone was satisfied with their dinner decisions, i was a little disappointed (i ordered the dry aged new york strip - it just didn't taste like the quality i've enjoyed elsewhere). overall it was a fantastic celebratory evening."

  • "I wanted a romantic dinner for my fiance and I. The restaurant was decent in the romance department. However every table around us complained about something. My wine glass had old lipstick, the table next to us his meal didn't come as he ordered so his wife had her meal and he was just watching her eat. The table behind us also had meals coming one at a time and the customer complained so the waiter took back the plates. About 15 min later the waiter came back with all of the plates and said "don't worry ladies I just took your plates out of the microwave so they are hot." Gross your seafood sitting in a microwave for 15 min. Don't waste your time go to the Black Angus down the street. "

  • "We went to The Derby to celebrate a birthday and it was wonderful. We got two of the evening specials and they were delicious. The birthday boy got a baked Alaska for dessert. My 6 year old daughter enjoyed her dinner and told us she wants to come back when it's her birthday."

  • "The experience was fulfilling and enjoyable. Service was never far away, not overbearing, yet the timing was perfect. The food and drinks were perfectly performed. The time was well spent and will be treasured for a special occasion."

  • "Incredible food and service. Great atmosphere. Best garlic cheese bread ever. Fabulous tournedos of beef. Great wedge salad. Would definitely come here again, but would split the main course and add a side. They gave us a Baked Alaska, prepared table side, for my sister's birthday, for FREE. They're expensive, but worth every penny."

  • "I love the Derby, have been coming here since early 1970's, and it is still as good as then. Always go for Special Occasion and get the Baked Alaska and cappuccino. Perfect end to a terrific meal."

  • "As usual, truly fine dining at it's best...greatest steaks, perfectly cooked...classy atmosphere and comfortable at the same time (not snobbish)"

  • "This was our 1st visit to "The Derby". My husband & I have lived in CA. all our married life (46yrs) and have never stopped in to have dinner at the Derby. We enjoyed ourselves and our waiter was excellent. The room we were seated in was very noisy and my husband had to sit right next to me so we could have a conversation. The inside of the restaurant is so classy and brings back a era (1940's) that we just don't get anywhere anymore. We had a excellent dinner and left very content. And yes we will go back."

  • "Love the ambiance. You can a wonderful meal without worrying about being crowded by another table next to you. There's live contemporary music on Friday nights, complimentary valet, and outdoor seating."

  • "The Santa Anita and racing memorabilia make this a distinctive and higher end choice among the many chain restaurants in this area. Family owned and with a clear connection to the racetrack culture, this restaurant stands out. That said, it is a traditional and fairly pricey steakhouse (with excellent seafood options). First time diners should be advised that "regulars" come expecting to know others in the restaurant and things can go from very sedate to rather raucous when such parties arrive! Those diners were having a great time but we were also pleased our relatively quiet meal was coming to an end when they arrived."

  • "The entire experience I had at the Derby was exceptional. The waiters constantly refilled our beverages and multiple loaves of bread, and were both friendly and helpful. The valet service was great, and the food itself, from the steaks to the salads to the desserts, were excellent."

  • "Local Arcadians that grew up knowing the history and significance of the restaurant. Always enjoy dining here. Their bacon wrapped filet is still as good as it was 30 years ago! Enjoy the consistency here, the fact that some things don't change (well, the prices have . . . hehehe). And if you're real lucky to get Barbara as a server you'll have a very memorable night! Great food, great ambiance, great restaurant!!!"

  • "As an out-of-towner, I try to make sure we reserve a night for the Derby. This was my 4th time at the Derby. Each time I've selected a different entree and this time around it was their NY Strip. It was prepared perfectly at medium rare. The wedge salad was terrific and pretty filling by itself. The sauteed mushrooms were very tasty. There were five in our group and we selected a bottle of their house Cab - Irony. Not too bad. Barbara was our waitress and she did an outstanding job! It was a great way to cap off a successful business trip."

  • "We had a great time at The Derby on Wednesday for lunch. The appetizers and lunch menu was extensive and very tasty. The Bar selection was great. We were also treated to a birthday dessert which was nice since a lot of places are cutting back on that. A wonderful afternoon. Thank you."

  • "going down the busy street that it sits on you can easily pass it up, however the décor in the place is really cool and the service we received was excellent....the food was so so, maybe too much in price for the quality and while it was good I don't know that I would have paid $95 for that chateaubriand but oh well it was fun watching the server light the meat up at table side."

  • "This is my favorite special occasion place, but the kitchen was slow. Once it came, my husband's steak was overcooked. We took it to go. Vern and Mgr handled things professionally. Vern is a great server. The kitchen just took too long."

  • "What a great place to celebrate a special occasion! Food, Service Everything was fabulous. I had the Trifecta, 1 crabcake, 2 shrimp scampi, and 3 bacon wrapped scallops, everyone else had the bacon wrapped filet. My sister said the steak was as tender as butter."

  • "Ambience is out-dated, and not in a nice way. In-house singer who was too loud. Meat over-cooked and fish was terrible. Can't recommend it."
