Diner Reviews
  • "The food is outstanding, the service less so. We were seated for some time before a server came. We put in our drink order. Five minutes later he returned to check on our order because he couldn't remember what we had asked for. Ten minutes later our wine arrived. He disappeared before taking our food order. We had to flag someone down to place our order. Later, my companion's salad plate was removed, along with her fork. Our entrees were served and she asked for another fork. It didn't arrive. We had to flag down three different servers before we finally got up and took a fork from another table. It was very disappointing and took away from just how good the food is."

  • "Someone we trust (and who loves food) recommended this to us for our visit to the DC area. We had no trouble finding it. We went for dinner and were absolutely delighted! We were warmly greeted and shown to a window table that we really liked. We love the way food and wine are recommended and paired on the menu - super easy to find a great match (and a fun list with different choices). The food was fabulous - the salads (we each tried each other's) were wonderful and the entrees superb. We just loved the overall feel and comfort of the place. Oh, and the coffee was outstanding, too. Prices were very reasonable. If we lived nearby we would go here often, it is a great neighborhood place with a fun vibe. Highly recommended."

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday. I found the restaurant through a Google search of wine restaurants near Arlington. I liked the wine selection and the menu. We enjoyed our meals very much. The only criticism I would give is that we took our time with our appetizers (delicious) but believe our dinner order was submitted and prepared and when we finally received our entries, they were cold, but flavorful."

  • "Our waitress was friendly and extremely knowledgeable regarding the wine pairings we requested for our meals. The meal was perfectly paced, and we didn't feel rushed or that we had to wait too long when we asked for more time. The cheese course to start was delicious, and the desserts were amazing! They had beer flights as well as wine but the wine list was the star. I would go back again."

  • "The whole experience from being greeted at the door to the end of the meal, was great. The server was very knowledgeable about the food. After talking with him, I chose the halibut with fried Brussels sprouts as an appetizer. The wine selection with the fish and vegetable were like a perfect match! The seasoning on the brussel sprouts was great, great char and the two sauces in sit on were great! Definitely try the sprouts! The halibut was excellent, with a crispy top and sitting on a bed of black "forbidden" rice! The evening was amazing and got better as after the meal, had a 10% discount so I chose dessert. Everything was great, service, food atmosphere! Would definitely would this place for a great place to eat in Shirlington!"

  • "The Curious Grape continues to be a grat dining experience, not just for Shirlington but for DC and the closer-in Virginia suburbs. The food is great; wine selections are always interesting; and the service matches."

  • "I came to see Cheryl and try the chocolate and wine, but the fish was amazing. The octopus appetizer on top of cucumber balls, hummus with squid ink, and pomegranite was like nothing we had tasted before. I had halibut and my husband had salmon. Both were seared to perfection. The service is always great and last night was especially good. The chocolate and wine was wonderful."

  • "Another fine meal at CG. LOVED the Bean Salad. But where have all the 1,000 point tables gone ??? I must have recommended you to too many friends."

  • "Great Shirlington spot for foodies. Quiet and great for conversation. Food was of the highest quality, caringly prepared and presented. Wine expert Dean found the right bottle for the table, and all were very happy with their food selections. Heirloom tomato and mozz salad and fried brussels sprouts starters stood out, as did the pork ragu and seared kampachi entrees. Service was impeccable."

  • "The food choices would appeal to a broad audience. Eggs Benedict were well prepared with an amazing English muffin. Fresh squeezed OJ was the best I've had."

  • "I have always had a wonderful experience both with the tastiness of the food and the prompt service. But, tonight their sublime fried brussels sprouts fizzled from lack of temperature heat. They were luke warm. Although, our impressive waiter Gary was happy to place another order, we were short on time as we were going to the theater following dinner. I would be the first to recommend to anyone going to The Curious Grape to try the brussels sprouts without hesitation, but this night was just an off night. On a positive note, the halibut and lamb chops were superb!"

  • "My only complaints about the Curious Grape are that it is hidden off of the main drag in Shirlington and that it disguises itself more as a wine bar. The food there is phenomenal and seems to be quite undersold by the setup. It triples as a wine bar, wine shop and restaurant. I think the food is good enough to stand alone with a wine emphasis. I like to take my wife there a few times a year and we are always treated to great fine and fantastic seasonal food."

  • "Great food and wine. This ia a place to go when one has time to linger, and to work through.several courses. Elegant."

  • "While the food was interesting and tasted good, this is one of those places you pay a lot of money for small portions and the service and atmosphere do not make up for the price tag. It was a neat place to try, but we won't be back on a regular basis."

  • "I wanted to take out a colleague from out of town to a nice restaurant and I picked The Curious Grape. WOW! The food was local and fresh and above all, delicious. The service was spectacular with our server talking us through the menu. There provide a great wine list and the dessert was perfect. The place was packed by the time we left so make sure to make reservations."

  • "the appertizers were far more interesting than the entrees, and well priced. The entrees, while some have smaller portion pricing, were overpriced. the wine and beverage offerings were great"

  • "The service was great, they allowed me to push my reservation back since my date and I were running late. The food was in what some would say small (but I would say accurate) portions, and it was all great quality and was well prepared. The beer/wine selection looked really wonderful and i'm sure i'll try it someday (after my 21st birthday..!) Everyone that serviced me while I was at the restaurant was friendly, professional, and fast, and I was never left feeling impatient as I am with some servers. I plan to try this place again!!"

  • "I took my mom here for a nice dinner and we loved it. Our server gave great suggestions for wine pairings with our appetizer and entrees. The food is the perfect serving size, and the quality is fantastic! We picked up a bottle of a wine we tried to take home with us. Overall another great experience at the Grape."

  • "The food is always tasty, unusual, and attractively plated at Curious Grape. Most entrees are available as a half order, which is typically a generous portion. The wine pairings are very helpful."

  • "A favorite place because of consistency and innovation of food and drink. Seasonal menu. Great hosts and servers. "

  • "Dinner was good, and the suggested wine pairing worked well. We picked a cheese plate for dessert, and that and the wine pairing were outstanding. So good we took a bottle home with us, which the waiter was happy to find for us. They give you 10% off retail purchases after you dine and they sell all the wines on their menu---as well as most of the cheeses. They brought a sparkler to our table in honor of my husband's birthday, which was a nice touch."

  • "My wife and I began coming here shortly after Curious Grape opened the restaurant and we keep coming back for more. Our server was very knowledgeable about all the menu offerings and wine pairings - and also had beer suggestions, which was a nice surprise to me. The food from the spring/summer menu did not disappoint. Back when my wife and I were dating, the time it took to get seated (even with a reservation) and for them to prepare and serve the meal was unacceptable. It appears they've addressed the problems. Two things have been constant: our servers have always been knowledgeable and excellent (slow service was due to maître d' and kitchen issues, not wait staff), and the food has always been top notch."

  • "Have eaten brunch and dinner at the Curious Grape. Both times were terrific! Great food and service, reasonable prices, free parking and plenty of it, and you can make a reservation. This place is equal to it better to more famous "top 100" restsurants! Don't miss it and don't wsit until it makes the list. (As soon as the food critics visit). Discover this hidden gem early and you'll visit often. "

  • "Menu offerings were not too inspiring. Food was only okay and not noteworthy. Server was nice but not too attentive. We identified the occasion as a birthday and they did a nice job recognizing the celebrant. Wine was very nice."

  • "We had a delightful anniversary celebration at Curious Grape. We shared several apps (brussel sprouts and feta/tomato salads) - yummy! Everyone had the wonderful lamb chops - mouthwatering! We look forward to returning! "

  • "We took a group for Mother's Day and were extremely happy with the quality of food and service. The wine list and beer list was very impressive--too long to decide on our own. The staff had great recommendations for beer and food. We loved the starters, especially the spring salad and brussel sprouts. The entrees were good/tasty (great sauces), but not too big. We agreed next time we would just order a few starters to get the most bang for the buck. Everything was great about our experience except the noise level, but it was pretty typical for a restaurant that serves alcohol. Not much they could do to lower the level. The rear area had a nice setting for larger groups and there were small tables outside too."

  • "Food here is always excellent, and the wine list provides many pairing options. Wish the menu changed more often. Had the tasting menu this visit, which is a new thing for them. Fabulous. Only slight critique is that an off dry sparkling by the glass would've been perfect with the duck confit appetizer. Service is often terrific here, but very slow on this visit"

  • "We have been to Curious Grape a number of times, usually for dinner. We went for brunch on Mothers Day (our third time for brunch) and loved it. The wild mushroom omelet and the smoked salmon benedict were both terrific and we can enthusiastically recommend them. And, of course, the choice of wines was very good."

  • "Lovely atmospere and interesting menu, love the wine pairing feature. Except for the fact that my lamp chops were too grizzly to swallow (could only eat half, the other half had to spit back out on to the plate!), it was a good meal. The brussel sprouts were wonderful. Tab was about $97, which included 3 glasses of wine."
