  • "Country Cat is one of our favorite neighborhood bistros. We decided to skip the traditional ham Easter meal and made reservations for brunch on Easter. The regular menu is always fabulous, and the chef had prepared several Easter brunch specials. I enjoyed a wonderful, seasonal goat cheese quiche with peas and asparagus accompanied by field greens. It was perfect! My boyfriend enjoyed the famous fried chicken and spoon bread. We also enjoyed the Union Gin cocktail special of the day. It was a thoroughly wonderful experience. I would highly recommend the Country Cat!!"

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday dinner and were very disappointed. The hostess was unbelievably rude to me, we waited for 10 minutes after the time of our reservation, I realize this is not solely the fault of the restaurant, but the hostess handled it very poorly. The general feeling I got from the staff was one I get in Portland all too often, that is that I should be grateful that such amazing hipsters take time out of their day to wait on me. Despite the extremely poor service I was really looking forward to the meal. I ordered the fried chicken, as that is what they are famous for and I was again disappointed. Three of us ordered chicken, 2 of the 3 came out burnt. We won't be back."

  • "After seeing The Country Cat featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, we decided to give this SE Portland restaurant a visit. The 2 dishes featured on the show were the Whole Hog and Skillet Fried Chicken. I ordered the WH, my wife ordered the chicken and we split 'em both. Even got our 10-year old daughter to try the head cheese. :) Both dishes were delicious, the pork chop featured on the Whole Hog was the best thing I ate that night. Our 7-year old son gobbled up the pork belly roll. All he kept saying, between drool-soaked bites, was "Baaacccoonnn!!!" We will definitely be recommending The Country Cat to all who will listen. Great ambiance, great/friendly service, and delicious food!!"

  • "Four of us had dinner on a Saturday night at the County Cat. Glad we made reservations and the place is small and fills up fast. Food was very good, meat nice and tender.....portions were moderate and light on the salad dressing but all in all a nice evening. Would go back - not anytime soon but once in a while."

  • "Waiter was rude. I made my reservation via OpenTable, when I checked in I was told I had to wait for 30-45min because there has been a long wait. (That's why I make reservations) very Un happy. I waited & and my party of 4 got treated bad. This included my two children. I will not be returning. Food was basic an plated very sloppy."

  • "I think it's the Best fried chicken I've ever had. My friend had Red Wine Braised Beef which was also wonderful. Service was great too. Try to get together a party of 4 and make a reservation. It's always packed. We got there at opening on a Tuesday (5pm) and there was already a line. Popular spot but worth the wait. And a bar where you can wait for your table."

  • "Saw the Diners, Drive-In's, & Dives show and the food looked amazing. At the restaurant, it did not look the same. The only thing that was out and out delicious was the pork chop from the Whole Hog plate. The greens served with a couple of the dinners were very bitter. The fried chicken that they are supposedly known for was not all that according to those in my party that ordered it. It was simply fried chicken (both pieces were fairly small and one of the dishes did not have a white meat piece!), and the mashed potatoes were red potatoes, and there was no green veg served at all. The hamburger was good, but the cheese choices left something to be desired. The duck leg was just that, a leg. Small at that. Just disappointed. Won't be back."

  • "I have been here on a couple occasions for dinner but this was my first brunch experience and it was AWESOME! The menu features some heartier fare including a remarkable braised beef hash with a creamy mustard sauce. The house cured ham and home made sausage links were both very good. The Benedict features either the ham or smoked salmon and comes on a house made biscuit and will leave you feeling more than full. Open room is a bit loud and there can be a bit of a wait on Sunday morning so make reservations if you have a schedule to keep. Pro tip: the basket of 3 cinnamon rolls is amazing. Super gooey and fresh from the oven with the Portland standby, Stumptown Coffee."

The only criticism I had was the Meyer lemon tart for dessert had an extremely tough crust. Not sure what that was about. Perhaps just an off night? The other elements were terrific."

  • "I like this cafe style place because their breakfast items are a change from standard old eggs and bacon (Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict on Biscuits). Everything was high quality. This is not a place we would travel across town for, but would be a regular if we lived in the SE 82nd and Stark area. However, to their credit, the place was packed with folks waiting outside at 11:30am on a Saturday. Good place."

  • "Each time we have dined at The Country Cat we have found consistent quality in our experience. From the friendly greeting upon arrival to the attentive service are needs are met as we expect them to be. The menu is a unique spin on traditional food. Calling the selections 'comfort food' understates both the ingredients and preparation. First time diners, including our table, are drawn to the Fried Chicken,however, we have returned multiple times to enjoy the braised ribs, seafood and vegetarian entrees. The side dishes can stand on their own as 'small plate' meals. Save room for dessert however as a sweet conclusion to a complete dining experience. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "After discovering the Country Cat had been reviewed by Foodnet work's triple D Guy, we decided would be the perfect spot for our New Years Eve wedding day brunch for a small group of 5. The services was good, wait staff helpful. The bar had a nice selection of breakfast cocktails, orange infused vodka in a local version of a screwdriver was lovely. Each of us order a different selection; biscuits and gravy, hash with poached eggs, pork with grits and eggs benedict with steal-head and a maple fried chicken that was exceptional. Most disappointing, the side order of link sausages were very dry. Overall rating I'd give our first experience at County Cat as middle of the road."

  • "My husband and I went to Country Cat for an early New Years Eve dinner. On that special occasion they accepted reservations for 2. They usually don't and we have been unable to score a table on weekend evenings.Anyway, this night we had wonderful dinners and a lovely time. My husband had duck sausage which was very tasty as were the the vegetables that accompanied the duck. I had the mushroom ravioli with crab in a brown butter sauce. Oh my was it yummy! It was not too rich but enough that I knew it was my year end splurge. The house wine was a nice choice too. Our server, Madeline, was great. She took good care of us. We will be back!"

  • "Our family of four (two adults. two teens) dined here recently and we all loved the place. The menu desciptions on their website are accurate but do not do justice to the expertise with which everything is prepared. Pan fried fish and fried chicken sound basic but reach new heights here. Friendly, attentive service and a short but sweet wine list complete the experience.Do not look for "haute cuisine" here, just the basics done perfectly. Every neighborhood needs a place like this, Montavilla and all of SE are lucky indeed."

Although on the upper end of what we normally would spend for a dinner, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and dining experience.   • "I had Sales here from Kansas City & some locals who had not been to the Country Cat. (I had been once) We had a great dinner, all meals were really tasty. We dined early so the noise level was low, but as the restaurant filled it was more lively, we could still carry on our conversation. Fried Chicken was a hit, as well as the Trout. Apple Pandowdy was swooned over... Highly recommend this place. Thanks for a nice evening."
