  • "Our reservations were for 10 at the 5 pm opening. Needless to say the food came out kind of slow, but when it arrived it was worth the wait! We sampled pretty much across the menu and I can highly recommend the onion rings which is sort of a misnomer as they were more like onion straws. The buttermilk biscuits were great. I had the Fish Fry, which was tasty. The table also tried the Pork three ways, the chicken with Spaetzle. All in all, we were highly satisfied and would return. Also a word for our server Brian. He was great! He managed a ten top with it's various questions and demands without missing a beat. Thanks."

  • "The noise level was so loud that often we could not hear one another at our table. We all had the fried chicken (5 of us) and were somewhat disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype but it was moist inside and crisp outside. Just needed more seasoning. Did not care for the liquid smoke flavor in the mashed potatoes. Onion rings were very good as was the homemade ketchup they were served with. The neighborhood did not lend itself to enjoying eating outside. The service was very good. We also liked our desserts-trio of puddings and rhubarb crumble."

  • "As usual, good food and friendly service. Brought two visiting UK friends and they were impressed with our local eating place. My only small comment was that the grilled loin needed the steak knife to cut it - a bit on the tough side. The rest of the pork (I had the "Whole Hog") was excellent. Reasonable beer selection and the cocktails went down well. We'll be back."

  • "The fried chicken was quite good- not fatty or greasy. The drink I had- the "boss" was really good. I probably wouldn't go back simply due to the location... It took us an hour to get there ( we live far on the west side) and the rest of the neighborhood was "up and coming" with a lot of work still ahead of it- which isn't really our style. Overall, this would be a good place to go if it were a lot closer, especially for drinks."

  • "The fried chicken could have used more salt and the onion rings less salt. My husband ordered the 'whole hog'. The last thing that he got to was the pork chop which was barely cooked. When confronting our waitress about it we asked for it to go because we were all finished with our meal and the kids were getting antsy. When we got home it was the same pork chop and it was still way undercooked. It seemed to be thrown on the grill, on the one side, and wasn't cooked nearly long enough. So, not only did the meal not come off our bill but we ended up with the same pork chop that still wasn't cooked. It was my husband's main reason for going there after watching it on 'Diners, Drive-ins & Dives'. Major disappointment."

  • "Country Cat is usually one of my go-to places, especially for brunch, but this visit left something to be desired (mainly better food). I brought out of town guests out who were excited to eat at a place featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. We asked what dishes they are known for and got them (Fried Chicken and the Whole Hog). The fried chicken was ok. Didn't knock it out of the park but no complaints. The Whole Hog, though, wasn't good. The grilled pork chop was so grisly that half of it remained on the plate. The crispy pork belly was decent. The braised pork shoulder was the best part except they only gave us this tiny spoonful. The beef jerky appetizer didn't thrill any of us and the onion rings, while tasty, were oversalted."

  • "Second time for dinner here and had yet another great evening. First saw this place on triple d. After our first trip here trying the dishes featured on the show I knew the place was worth all the tv exposure. Fried chicken and the whole hog were as good as expected. Second visit we tried the lamb and braised beef and it was perfection. Also the sides were wel worth it, check out the grits and greens. I look forward to trying the rest of the menu. Service both visits were fast and friendly, not always the case in places that are that busy. They do take reservations for 4 or more and I would recommend taking advantage of that."

  • "Our server was very friendly and attentive. The ample duck meal was tasty, the salmon was reported good, but was overcooked. There was a steak special was cooked just right, had good flavor, but needed vegetables and color added to the plate. The lamb was good, but because it was on a skewer, some was good and tasty, but some was overcooked and therefore tough. The tomato-kale ragu sauce underneath the lamb was very flavorful. Reservations for 5 people got us a booth for 4 with a chair added on at the end sitting in the isle. A very crowded and uncomfortable fit. Friday night and the place was packed and quite noisy. However, the food was good enough that we plan to go back and try it again --but with 4 or less people."

  • "Good food and service, but expensive $$$. Our bill was $156 for 5. Dinner included 2+ beers, 1 cocktail, water, and a soda. We shared an order of onion rings. We ordered 2 Whole Hogs, 2 Fried Chicken, and 1 Duck 2-ways. The portions featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives were double the size of our actual dinners. I ate every last bite of my dinner and I still went away hungry and somewhat disappointed. Otherwise, the Country Cat was a fun experience. We live on the west side so we probably won't go frequently. A good locals restaurant. Recommend making reservations and arriving about 30 minutes early as there is no place to wait except outside. We went on a Tuesday night and were seated immediately with our reservation."

The noise level most times is unacceptably high and it is hard to hear one another at the table. The noise level keeps us from more frequent visits.   • "My family was visiting from Alaska, and as I had had a wonderful brunch a couple of weeks ago at the Country Cat, I decided to bring them to your restaurant for dinner. What a wonderful evening! We ate and drank our way through a succession of amazing cocktails and artfully prepared, delicious plates-- each exquisite in composition and taste. We very much appreciated the chef's skills and the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients. The service was wonderful, too. Truly, this was one of the best meals I have had in the city. My only regret was that I was too full for dessert. Thank you, Country Cat-- I'll be back!"

  • "Country Cat is one of our favorite neighborhood bistros. We decided to skip the traditional ham Easter meal and made reservations for brunch on Easter. The regular menu is always fabulous, and the chef had prepared several Easter brunch specials. I enjoyed a wonderful, seasonal goat cheese quiche with peas and asparagus accompanied by field greens. It was perfect! My boyfriend enjoyed the famous fried chicken and spoon bread. We also enjoyed the Union Gin cocktail special of the day. It was a thoroughly wonderful experience. I would highly recommend the Country Cat!!"

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday dinner and were very disappointed. The hostess was unbelievably rude to me, we waited for 10 minutes after the time of our reservation, I realize this is not solely the fault of the restaurant, but the hostess handled it very poorly. The general feeling I got from the staff was one I get in Portland all too often, that is that I should be grateful that such amazing hipsters take time out of their day to wait on me. Despite the extremely poor service I was really looking forward to the meal. I ordered the fried chicken, as that is what they are famous for and I was again disappointed. Three of us ordered chicken, 2 of the 3 came out burnt. We won't be back."

  • "I saw this place on Diners, Driveins and Dives, and it looked great. Looks are deceiving. Food was very ordinary, somewhat overpriced. Four very salty fried oysters for $17 is a bit of a ripoff. Don't get the whole hog plate. Everything on it is overcooked and tough."

  • "After seeing The Country Cat featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, we decided to give this SE Portland restaurant a visit. The 2 dishes featured on the show were the Whole Hog and Skillet Fried Chicken. I ordered the WH, my wife ordered the chicken and we split 'em both. Even got our 10-year old daughter to try the head cheese. :) Both dishes were delicious, the pork chop featured on the Whole Hog was the best thing I ate that night. Our 7-year old son gobbled up the pork belly roll. All he kept saying, between drool-soaked bites, was "Baaacccoonnn!!!" We will definitely be recommending The Country Cat to all who will listen. Great ambiance, great/friendly service, and delicious food!!"

  • "Four of us had dinner on a Saturday night at the County Cat. Glad we made reservations and the place is small and fills up fast. Food was very good, meat nice and tender.....portions were moderate and light on the salad dressing but all in all a nice evening. Would go back - not anytime soon but once in a while."

I waited & and my party of 4 got treated bad. This included my two children. I will not be returning. Food was basic an plated very sloppy."

  • "I think it's the Best fried chicken I've ever had. My friend had Red Wine Braised Beef which was also wonderful. Service was great too. Try to get together a party of 4 and make a reservation. It's always packed. We got there at opening on a Tuesday (5pm) and there was already a line. Popular spot but worth the wait. And a bar where you can wait for your table."
