Diner Reviews
  • "We haved enjoyed Country Cat a few times now and know that we will always have a great experience. Someone at our table has always ordered the Hog Wild signature dish and it's always a hit. This time I ordered the vegetarian crepe. It was fabulous! Country Cat is a perfect place to take out of towners. Aside from the food being top shelf, the prices don't break the bank. Madeline was our server and she is very attentive and helpful with the wine list and food descriptions."

  • "My second visit an they just do a great job! Excellent server (again!) and the food is consistently great."

  • "The food was good- my husband and my brother had fried chicken and mashed potatoes- that was all-no vegetables at all. I would think for $15 they could have added some vegetables. I had salmon on a small bed of greens and vegetables. My sister-in-law had the duck; our food experience was very good if a bit skimpy (see veggie comment) but the noise level made it impossible to converse except by leaning over the table towards each other. The floor is cement, the booths we sat on were wood, no draperies- nothing to soften the decibels. We all agreed that though the food was great, ambience is also part of the dining experience and we would not return."

  • "This place bills itself as Northwestern, but goes beyond. The menu has much more than the usual items - try the duck - SOOOOO good! Everything we tasted was good. Deciding what to get is the problem. Duck is so good I'll probably get that again, although there are a lot of tempting traditional dishes like fried oysters and salmon. Drinks are innovative. We did go on a Friday so the place was packed and noisy, which isn't the best. The modern design has too many hard surfaces which makes too much noise. Also service was a little slow. However, I would definitely be up for another try (maybe a week night) because the food is so exceptional."

  • "We were told to never eat at a restaurant if you can't see into the kitchen. We love the Country Cat bar, where you are practically IN the kitchen! So much fun. And wonderful food, too! Chicken fried steak was outstanding. As was the Bloody Mary."

  • "We have been to Country Cat several times and are always impressed by the creative and fresh dishes we order. They use local, seasonal ingredients to create unique and delicious fare. Reasonably priced too! No frills ambiance and a bit loud......otherwise...we will be back!"

  • "Worst restaurant in Portland! While waiting to be seated we were at bar and were charge for a beer and a glass of wine $44.00 When we complained they said they hit the wrong key in computer. Fix it!. Ours was a party of five and when one of the them requested a variation on the Whole Hog it was refused by the unfriendly/rude waitress and again by manager due to strategically portioned out the food to maximize revenue. I would had walked out but out of respect for my friends we stayed. That person did not ordered. Stay away of this to big to fail neighborhood dump."

  • "this restaurant excels at providing the Portland foodie scene in a local neighborhood establishment. We visit even though it isn't our neighborhood! The service was superior on our most recent visit creating an added plus to good food and a fun environment."

  • "Went to Country Cat because it was listed one of Portland's best. Checked in with hostess 3 times over 45 minutes before being sat - we had a reservation, but she "forgot" my name and gave away our table. Our server was extremely rude. When we asked questions about the menu, she acted like we were idiots and was annoyed. Her service was very inattentive. When my husband finished his iced tea, she walked by and took his glass away. He had to flag her down and ask her for another. Their 'famous' fried chicken was just ok. Absolutely nothing special. Our server did not check on us after our food arrived. Very disappointed. We were visiting Portland for fun and good food was our main objective, wish we picked somewhere else."

  • "Country Cat has been on our list of "places we need to try". We were not disappointed. Our party of 5 had a hard time deciding what to order so we ordered 5 main dishes and shared each one family-style. Loved them all!"

  • "My favorite place to catch up with friends and family. I recently accepted a new job and was excited to bring my folks out for brunch. Always amazing food and service. The eggs Benedict and the smoked brisket are to die for."

  • "I have enjoyed everything on this menu. The sweet cream biscuits are the best and their pancakes are top notch!!!"

  • "Our reservations were for 10 at the 5 pm opening. Needless to say the food came out kind of slow, but when it arrived it was worth the wait! We sampled pretty much across the menu and I can highly recommend the onion rings which is sort of a misnomer as they were more like onion straws. The buttermilk biscuits were great. I had the Fish Fry, which was tasty. The table also tried the Pork three ways, the chicken with Spaetzle. All in all, we were highly satisfied and would return. Also a word for our server Brian. He was great! He managed a ten top with it's various questions and demands without missing a beat. Thanks."

  • "Of the four of us I was the only one some what disappointed with the food. My fried chicken was a little too crunchy and dry but tasty. The appetizers were good. The noise level is high but the service is good. Prices re reasonable ."

  • "we had a great time.....kid friendly and EVERYTHING that we ordered was AMAZING! Loved our server....wish I knew her name....my dad had watched them featured on tv in Alaska and he hit it big! great job all of you!"

  • "The noise level was so loud that often we could not hear one another at our table. We all had the fried chicken (5 of us) and were somewhat disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype but it was moist inside and crisp outside. Just needed more seasoning. Did not care for the liquid smoke flavor in the mashed potatoes. Onion rings were very good as was the homemade ketchup they were served with. The neighborhood did not lend itself to enjoying eating outside. The service was very good. We also liked our desserts-trio of puddings and rhubarb crumble."

  • "Food and service was outstanding! We enjoyed every bit of it. We rarely have dessert but we wanted to try it and it was crumpteous!"

  • "As usual, good food and friendly service. Brought two visiting UK friends and they were impressed with our local eating place. My only small comment was that the grilled loin needed the steak knife to cut it - a bit on the tough side. The rest of the pork (I had the "Whole Hog") was excellent. Reasonable beer selection and the cocktails went down well. We'll be back."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The fried chicken was quite good- not fatty or greasy. The drink I had- the "boss" was really good. I probably wouldn't go back simply due to the location... It took us an hour to get there ( we live far on the west side) and the rest of the neighborhood was "up and coming" with a lot of work still ahead of it- which isn't really our style. Overall, this would be a good place to go if it were a lot closer, especially for drinks."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The fried chicken could have used more salt and the onion rings less salt. My husband ordered the 'whole hog'. The last thing that he got to was the pork chop which was barely cooked. When confronting our waitress about it we asked for it to go because we were all finished with our meal and the kids were getting antsy. When we got home it was the same pork chop and it was still way undercooked. It seemed to be thrown on the grill, on the one side, and wasn't cooked nearly long enough. So, not only did the meal not come off our bill but we ended up with the same pork chop that still wasn't cooked. It was my husband's main reason for going there after watching it on 'Diners, Drive-ins & Dives'. Major disappointment."

  • "Country Cat is usually one of my go-to places, especially for brunch, but this visit left something to be desired (mainly better food). I brought out of town guests out who were excited to eat at a place featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. We asked what dishes they are known for and got them (Fried Chicken and the Whole Hog). The fried chicken was ok. Didn't knock it out of the park but no complaints. The Whole Hog, though, wasn't good. The grilled pork chop was so grisly that half of it remained on the plate. The crispy pork belly was decent. The braised pork shoulder was the best part except they only gave us this tiny spoonful. The beef jerky appetizer didn't thrill any of us and the onion rings, while tasty, were oversalted."

  • "Second time for dinner here and had yet another great evening. First saw this place on triple d. After our first trip here trying the dishes featured on the show I knew the place was worth all the tv exposure. Fried chicken and the whole hog were as good as expected. Second visit we tried the lamb and braised beef and it was perfection. Also the sides were wel worth it, check out the grits and greens. I look forward to trying the rest of the menu. Service both visits were fast and friendly, not always the case in places that are that busy. They do take reservations for 4 or more and I would recommend taking advantage of that."

  • "This was our visit to the Cat and the next time we are Portland we will be going back some more, some more, some more, some more. The whole hog was great as was the fried chicken. The small plate beef jerky we took some home with us, and the biscuits melt in your mouth. So hit the road Jack and find your way to the Cat."

  • "We celebrated a birthday night and had a great casual night out. The ribeye with fried clams was excellent as with the pork platter. They had great cocktails and finished with a rhubarb cobbler. Excellent service. We will go back to try the fried chicken...."

  • "This is my first time to the Country Cat. I've read and heard reviews about the restaurant, and I wasn't disappointed! The food was truly delicious, drinks were great, and the service was attentive. I highly recommend this to my friends."

  • "Our server was very friendly and attentive. The ample duck meal was tasty, the salmon was reported good, but was overcooked. There was a steak special was cooked just right, had good flavor, but needed vegetables and color added to the plate. The lamb was good, but because it was on a skewer, some was good and tasty, but some was overcooked and therefore tough. The tomato-kale ragu sauce underneath the lamb was very flavorful. Reservations for 5 people got us a booth for 4 with a chair added on at the end sitting in the isle. A very crowded and uncomfortable fit. Friday night and the place was packed and quite noisy. However, the food was good enough that we plan to go back and try it again --but with 4 or less people."

  • "Good food and service, but expensive $$$. Our bill was $156 for 5. Dinner included 2+ beers, 1 cocktail, water, and a soda. We shared an order of onion rings. We ordered 2 Whole Hogs, 2 Fried Chicken, and 1 Duck 2-ways. The portions featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives were double the size of our actual dinners. I ate every last bite of my dinner and I still went away hungry and somewhat disappointed. Otherwise, the Country Cat was a fun experience. We live on the west side so we probably won't go frequently. A good locals restaurant. Recommend making reservations and arriving about 30 minutes early as there is no place to wait except outside. We went on a Tuesday night and were seated immediately with our reservation."

  • "We live in NW PDX and had friends drive from East Vancouver, WA to meet us and we are never disappointed with the food and service. The noise level most times is unacceptably high and it is hard to hear one another at the table. The noise level keeps us from more frequent visits. The wait staff are always fun, friendly, and knowledgeable. "

  • "Very friendly staff. Food was great. I had the eggs benedict that Country Cat puts over a biscuit versus a English muffin. Therefore there was more a crunch under the hollandaise sauce. Best thing "

  • "Very meaty, conventional menu; some lighter brunch choice(s) would be a nice addition. Otherwise, we love the Cat. "

  • "This was our second experience there and food, whole hog, fried chicken, burger, and steaks, jerky, wings, onion rings all were fabulous! However, we were in a group of six and it really is loud in here. Very hard to hear each other. Perfect place to go as a couple if you want to talk and not shout!"

  • "There is a touch of the South in this Northwest restaurant with creative menu items. Country Cat can satisfy traditional eaters (meat and potatoes types) while making meat-centered dishes interesting for those who want something a little more. Tasty vegetables, sauces, and grits or other starches are often included on the plate with the entree."
