Was excited to visit this restaurant but was very disappointed. Restaurant was very noisy although we did get seated on time for a reservation for four. The onion rings for excellent but the rest of the meal was marginal. I had the whole hog and it certainly didn't look like the portrayal in the pictures. Portion was small for $23. Pork chop was not tender and juicy.. Dry and too well done. Our friends had the fried chicken and it was nothing special. Two average size pieces for $15 is in our minds a ripoff. Comments were that KFC was better. Appetizers came in a timely manner but entrees took almost 30 min. Not a restaurant we will be returning to.

We tried a few different dishes here. The Lamb, Fried Chicken and the "famous" Whole Hog Plate. The portions for the lamb and hog plate were pretty off for their price tag. The fried chicken was boneless and extremely tasty and not greasy. The lamb was flavorful and moist but also small in portion. We started with the Judy cheese, crackers and pickled vegetables. We liked the flavor in the cheese and the crackers but the vegetables were a little too wild for us. I was not impressed with a $7.00 price tag for sides. Nothing that comes on the side should cost $7.00. I was able to try the collard greens which were great in texture and fresh. The mashed potatoes and gravy each had a nice kick of spice.

I posted a review on Yelp. So many things. Started from walking in. Informed(in the way a parent might scold a child) we were early and it was their policy to not seat early (5 minutes early with elderly folks in the party). The table was directly behind us and empty (hello? drink orders? more revenue?). Plates were whisked away so fast one of our diners still had fork in hand. Told twice this table was already reserved at 8:00 (our reservation was for 5:30). Table not adequate for party of 5. One of us sat in a busy aisle way. Server seemed cold and not interested. With tip bill came to $200. Will not recommend to friends. Saw another party treated the same way up front. Scooted them outside and suggested a bar up the street (what?).

GREAT food, but difficult to hear inside of the restaurant due to loud music. Service was fairly quick even during busy Sunday brunch hours. RESERVATION A MUST, particularly for a group of 5 or more. Did I mention the food was great?? Our group of 5 ordered a variety of plates, & we ooh'd and aah'd over each one! We even got an extra order of onion rings (strings) to go, they were so dang good!! Strong coffee and rich bloody mary's!

We visited Portland f m Seattle, on a girlfriends getaway weekend. We tried to find yummy spots to eat and this was definitely a fabulous find. We made reservations since there were four of us, and when we arrived, even though there was a really long line of folks waiting to get in, we sailed right in and were seated immediately. We decided to order four different dishes and share them. It was a really good idea as that way we were all able to taste some really great dishes. They are famous for their fried chicken and after tasting it, it's easy to see why. It was amazing. We also shared pumpkin pancakes with Apple compote and salted caramel drizzle, de-constructed beef hash and a basket of pecan cinnamon rolls. It was fabulous!!!

I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for over a year after I heard how great the fried chicken, biscuits and mashed potatoes were. When we arrived our table was ready and service was quick...so good so far right? All 3 adults ordered the chicken and an order of biscuits. Food came fast and we were so excited to finally try it but much to our dismay we all looked at each other with a not so excited look. The mashed potatoes and gravy were way to sour and not what I remember country gravy tasting like. The chicken was crisp but a little bit dry and somehow mine had a few gobs of the coating that had not completely cooked. Biscuits were dry and we had to get more honey to get them down. Might have been a bad nite, so we'll try again!

Mediocre all around. Fried chicken was good but mashed potatoes with gravy was boring and no vegetable, salad or biscuit included just 2 pieces of chicken in a bowl with mashed potatoes and a tablespoon of gravy for $15. The side of greens was excellent - perfectly tender and tangy. The Whole Hog was very tasty. A bit off the beaten path for a Portland tourist - about a $25 taxi ride one way from 6th St. So many more great places to eat I would not return or recommend.

After seeing an episode of Diners Drive-ins and Dives, my wife wanted to celebrate her birthday dinner with fried chicken at the Country Cat. Out of the five of us that ate there, I am the only one that enjoyed his meal. I had "the whole hog" pork plate. My wife's chicken was very bland and under-seasoned (I tasted it and I concur). My daughter and her boy friend were very under whelmed by their dishes. They did like their special formula Long Island Iced teas. The wait staff was very courteous and attentive. I just don't think this place is worth the drive from the West Side.

In a place with an active bar, I don't like my server to be a bartender. The food was good, but it doesn't live up to its current reputation. The braised beef was tasty, but lacked decent presentation. The panfried chicken was excellent, but the accompanying mashed potatoes and gravy were sludge. Really, a restaurant must respect its gravy. Collard greens were a nice accompaniment, vinegary and tender. Glass wine selections were excellent. The oatmeal peach crisp for dessert was pleasing. Coffee was good; no refill was offered. With these cautions, I would recommend the Cat to friends. But with Portland's range of restaurants I probably won't be back.

Great food, well presented with attentive service. Decor/ambience unremarkable. Onion rings, catfish, salmon, duck, trout all hits at our table. Jerky was actually quite good, but weird to eat as an app. Kids cleaned their plates. Best desserts: 3 puddings and peach cobbler. Flourless chocolate cake was really good, but not right after a heavy meal. Icebox cake was good too but not special. The main downside was that it was extremely LOUD in the restaurant which detracted from our dining experience and service since we had to yell and repeat in order to be heard.

We haved enjoyed Country Cat a few times now and know that we will always have a great experience. Someone at our table has always ordered the Hog Wild signature dish and it's always a hit. This time I ordered the vegetarian crepe. It was fabulous! Country Cat is a perfect place to take out of towners. Aside from the food being top shelf, the prices don't break the bank. Madeline was our server and she is very attentive and helpful with the wine list and food descriptions.

The food was good- my husband and my brother had fried chicken and mashed potatoes- that was all-no vegetables at all. I would think for $15 they could have added some vegetables. I had salmon on a small bed of greens and vegetables. My sister-in-law had the duck; our food experience was very good if a bit skimpy (see veggie comment) but the noise level made it impossible to converse except by leaning over the table towards each other. The floor is cement, the booths we sat on were wood, no draperies- nothing to soften the decibels. We all agreed that though the food was great, ambience is also part of the dining experience and we would not return.

This place bills itself as Northwestern, but goes beyond. The menu has much more than the usual items - try the duck - SOOOOO good! Everything we tasted was good. Deciding what to get is the problem. Duck is so good I'll probably get that again, although there are a lot of tempting traditional dishes like fried oysters and salmon. Drinks are innovative. We did go on a Friday so the place was packed and noisy, which isn't the best. The modern design has too many hard surfaces which makes too much noise. Also service was a little slow. However, I would definitely be up for another try (maybe a week night) because the food is so exceptional.

Worst restaurant in Portland! While waiting to be seated we were at bar and were charge for a beer and a glass of wine $44.00 When we complained they said they hit the wrong key in computer. Fix it!. Ours was a party of five and when one of the them requested a variation on the Whole Hog it was refused by the unfriendly/rude waitress and again by manager due to strategically portioned out the food to maximize revenue. I would had walked out but out of respect for my friends we stayed. That person did not ordered. Stay away of this to big to fail neighborhood dump.

Went to Country Cat because it was listed one of Portland's best. Checked in with hostess 3 times over 45 minutes before being sat - we had a reservation, but she "forgot" my name and gave away our table. Our server was extremely rude. When we asked questions about the menu, she acted like we were idiots and was annoyed. Her service was very inattentive. When my husband finished his iced tea, she walked by and took his glass away. He had to flag her down and ask her for another. Their 'famous' fried chicken was just ok. Absolutely nothing special. Our server did not check on us after our food arrived. Very disappointed. We were visiting Portland for fun and good food was our main objective, wish we picked somewhere else.

Our reservations were for 10 at the 5 pm opening. Needless to say the food came out kind of slow, but when it arrived it was worth the wait! We sampled pretty much across the menu and I can highly recommend the onion rings which is sort of a misnomer as they were more like onion straws. The buttermilk biscuits were great. I had the Fish Fry, which was tasty. The table also tried the Pork three ways, the chicken with Spaetzle. All in all, we were highly satisfied and would return. Also a word for our server Brian. He was great! He managed a ten top with it's various questions and demands without missing a beat. Thanks.

The noise level was so loud that often we could not hear one another at our table. We all had the fried chicken (5 of us) and were somewhat disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype but it was moist inside and crisp outside. Just needed more seasoning. Did not care for the liquid smoke flavor in the mashed potatoes. Onion rings were very good as was the homemade ketchup they were served with. The neighborhood did not lend itself to enjoying eating outside. The service was very good. We also liked our desserts-trio of puddings and rhubarb crumble.

As usual, good food and friendly service. Brought two visiting UK friends and they were impressed with our local eating place. My only small comment was that the grilled loin needed the steak knife to cut it - a bit on the tough side. The rest of the pork (I had the "Whole Hog") was excellent. Reasonable beer selection and the cocktails went down well. We'll be back.
