A word from The Copper Onion
The Copper Onion is one of the new additions to the growing Utah foodie scene. Former NYC chef (and native Utahan) Ryan Lowder now brings his personal take on New American cuisine to his own kitchen with an approach inspired by his passion for Utah’s outstanding farmstead ingredients and his experience as a chef cooking his way through Barcelona, NYC and South America. The Copper Onion serves a wide array of vegetable side dishes and a menu designed to explore and share, with plates such as Ricotta dumplings with lemon, sage and brown butter and Braised Pork Belly with shaved Brussels sprouts and pickled celeriac. Entrees include Fresh house-made papparedelle with lamb ragout and Duck Confit with butternut squash and roasted mushroom caps. An insistent focus on the freshest and best is paramount; sausages and burgers are ground daily, bread is baked and ice cream is made in house, offering casual diners an exceptional experience at affordable prices.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had heard great things and finally tried it. It didn't disappoint. Our server was awesome (I wish I could remember her name) and explained the menu and gave us great recommendations. We ordered the stroganoff and the meatloaf. The stroganoff was amazing. We didn't love the meatloaf quite as much. We also tried the steak fries (Yum) green beans (Yum) and the beets (ok). We will definitely be going back."

  • "I eat here 4or 5 times a month and food and service is always great. To be this consistent in the Resturant business is not easy. Job we'll done"

  • "We greatly enjoyed our dinner at the Cooper Onion the other night. We made reservations as this is a popular place and now we know why. The food selections are great; the service was very good, and the food was fantastic. Our server "Jenny" was extremely helpful in identifying the various small plates and entries and house specialties. Very nice restaurant for a date, for friends, and for a fun time."

  • "Thanks to other Open Table reviews, we recently enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Copper Onion while we were in Salt Lake City. The food was incredible and the service friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was great and the place was full to capacity on a Monday night! Will definitely advise people visiting Salt Lake to enjoy a meal there. Just sorry I didn't have a chance to come back for a lunch!"

  • "We were visiting SLC for a convention and decided to have a late night dinner there one night. We were very pleasantly surprised by the wonderfully fresh and delicious food served. A pork belly appetizer we ordered was absolutely delicious. Fettuccine Carbonara was also very well executed. Staff was friendly and great overall experience."

  • "Copper Onion has an affordable Sunday Brunch that is on par with their dinner menu. In addition to the normal brunch menu, Copper Onion had several specials that were hard to pass up. The service was fast and friendly--we never had to wait long. The restaurant (recently remodeled) offers a great atmosphere with high energy."

  • "The food was great. The patio is great for a summer night or Sunday brunch. The service was really good and the recommendations spot on. We shared the small plates. The corn (yes roasted corn) was delicious. Meats and cheeses were very good."

  • "The appetizers were awesome however the most expensive item (Steak) was a C- Very disappointed however my wife's pasta dish with bacon was amazing. We love the location/restaurant and there lunch is way better than dinner. Outstanding service and very friendly staff!!!"

  • "The food is so delicious. I had a to-die-for Pork chop. My boyfriend got Wagyu beef stroganoff and he said it was amazing too! The food portion is not too big, just enough to have a little dessert or a glass of wine after."

  • "Nice outdoor dining and convenient to the Broadway movies. Friendly efficient staff."

  • "My husband and I were visiting town and read great reviews about the copper onion. The online menu looked great and we thought we would give it a try. It was pretty busy when we got there but thankfully we had a reservation. The best part about this place is the ambiance - great atomosphere! We ordered the patata bravas, ricotta fritters, lamb riblets and duck. The lamb was superb but my duck was overlooked and dry -- and I wasnt very impressed with the overall dish. So for me personally, the food experience was underwhelming. The part I couldn't really understand was the low level of customer service. Our waiter showed no interest in us until we asked for the bill -- at that point I guess he thought he'd put more effort in for his tip."

  • "Any time I go to a restaurant for the first time I order a burger. If they can get the burger right, I always go back. The Copper Onion does the burger right. Therefore... I will be back."

  • "It's good news in SLC when you really need a reservation to have lunch in one of your favorite places. Business is booming and the food quality remains consistently excellent. Be sure to share "patatas bravas", a crispy spicy potato appetizer: it never fails to convert new visitors. Many food sources are local or natural and preparation is always spot on over several years dining here. The luncheon noise level made conversation a bit difficult (concrete walls) but at dinner time there was never a problem, voices are more mellow."

  • "This place never disappoints. I had the burger, one friend had the meatloaf and another the trout. We were all extremely pleased with the food and service."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "Great dining experience with excellent food and service. The noise level was a little high but I was still able to have a conversation with my dinner date."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "I've always loved the Copper Onion though the noise level inside keeps me from taking a lot of people there I would otherwise take for the food. In the spring/summer/fall you can sit outside which helps a little. Otherwise a great place!"

  • "I hear a lot of rave about this place so I came and ate with two other friends. The best word to describe the food is salty. Everything is salty from appetizers to entrees. Fresh ingredients, but the combination of tastes for each dish was very bland."

  • "Despite a reservation we had horrible and loud seats. No service and food mediocre "

  • "We went to Copper Onion for a birthday lunch during the work day. Service was fast and super friendly. He made excellent suggestions for entrees. I have been here in the past and it took a really long time, but this time we were in and out in an hour which was great during the work day. The meatloaf is exceptional, although I was a bit underwhelmed by the spinach on the side. My friend had the Cuban which was great, but definitely not a traditional Cuban sandwich. Overall a wonderful experience! "

  • "Unique menu concept and great flavors make this a must go restaurant. There is nothing bashful about this place and oh how refreshing can you get! I've tried to get in for a long time and learned that when Open Table doesn't work for you here, call. You might get lucky "

  • "The dishes served at the Copper Onion are always great--comfort food with style. It's too bad it's always so difficult to get a reservation."

  • "I was so looking forward to this evening and experiencing the food at The Copper Onion. My reservation was at 8 pm for 2 and although we arrived 15- 20 minutes prior, we almost thought we were forgotten by the time they called us at 8:25pm! The restaurant was SO loud and noisy that my husband and I could barely hear one another. It tool 15 minutes to get water once we were sat. They did not have the bottle of wine that we ordered and that took another 15 minutes to inform us of that. We were suggested different wine which we had and enjoyed. But as for the food, well I am a gourmet cook and this was not gourmet food. It was average fair and we were disappointed."

  • "Food was delicious, as always. My favorite remains the beef stroganoff on homemade noodles. But the noise level was so loud that it made for an unpleasant evening."
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "The meatloaf was amazing. I don't know if I'll ever be able to make it at home again, I'll constantly compare mine to the divine Copper Onion's. Mine will always fall short."

  • "My girlfriends and I went here to celebrate our birthdays. It was great! The food is delicious and the cocktails and wine was divine as well. We sat outside and I highly recommend sitting outside if you can it was just fabulous. I recommend this to anyone wanting really great food and great service. We will be back for sure. :)"

  • "I've been to Copper Onion many times for brunch, but only twice for dinner, most recently with my wife. I got the meatloaf, which is excellent, and she got the steak, which she ordered medium rare but was unfortunately done medium well and prepared somewhat plainly. This is in high contrast with their burger, which I've gotten several times for brunch and maintain is among the best prepared and most flavorful in all of SLC. The service was very friendly, they even seated us early and promptly offered drinks, and their selection of cocktails is great. They have a good atmosphere and their attitude is in the right place as a restaurant. Overall we will probably not go back for dinner but will definitely go again for brunch."

  • "Tucked away so you have to know what you're looking for. The restaurant had good reviews on Yelp and Urban Spoon and lived up to the hype with good food and service. A little noisy when the crowds roll in, but still gets a thumbs up."

  • "We always enjoy a brunch or dinner at Copper Onion and this time was no exception. Both our entrees of lamb riblets and the duck confit were done perfectly and the staff is always friendly and accommodating--thanks!"

  • "I really enjoyed my delicious meal at the copper onion."
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "The Copper Onion is one if not the highest rated restaurant for dinner I could find on social media in SLC. I regularly scan other reviews to find gems in town I am visiting and had high expectations from this four and a half star restaurant. The visit was booked in advance by reservation which didn't seem necessary the day of my visit but I didn't want to take any chances as I have wanted to visit for dinner a trip previous and a reservation for the entire weekend could only be booked after 9PM. The flavors were there but maybe it was the execution on this rainy day in April for this hip location which is quite hip and pretty."

  • "I first came to this restaurant 6 months ago on business to Salt Lake City and couldn't wait to come back to eat here again. As I was dining solo, I was provided a spot at the counter in front of the line. Watching the Chefs prepare each ticket and being able to see what delicious products were flying through the pass made the menu decisions even harder, everything looked so wonderful. I opted for the Pork Chop, which was just re-added to the menu the night I made my reservation. Perfection. I had thought about that dish for the past 6 months since my last visit. The Chefs were also very personable during service, making time to start a conversation with me and fully involve me in the dining experience. I so look forward another meal!"

  • "This restaurant came highly recommended, but we found it to be too noisy! Between the noise level and the uncomfortable seats, the food got a bit lost. The pork chop was good, but it was a relief to get back out on the street, which actually seemed quiet in comparison. We don't plan a return trip even though our server was delightful."
