A word from The Copper Onion
The Copper Onion is one of the new additions to the growing Utah foodie scene. Former NYC chef (and native Utahan) Ryan Lowder now brings his personal take on New American cuisine to his own kitchen with an approach inspired by his passion for Utah’s outstanding farmstead ingredients and his experience as a chef cooking his way through Barcelona, NYC and South America. The Copper Onion serves a wide array of vegetable side dishes and a menu designed to explore and share, with plates such as Ricotta dumplings with lemon, sage and brown butter and Braised Pork Belly with shaved Brussels sprouts and pickled celeriac. Entrees include Fresh house-made papparedelle with lamb ragout and Duck Confit with butternut squash and roasted mushroom caps. An insistent focus on the freshest and best is paramount; sausages and burgers are ground daily, bread is baked and ice cream is made in house, offering casual diners an exceptional experience at affordable prices.Continued

  • "I loved the Saturday brunch. It was crowded but not uncomfortable. I loved my food and the service was amazing. I wrote about it on facebook and many people replied they want to go there for brunch. Already planning our next brunch there."

  • "Food and service were fantastic, so good we went back the next Sunday so I could try what someone else had at the table, beef stroganoff which was to die for....very customer friendly policy with corkage of $12 per bottle...one of the best restaurants we have been to in a long time, outstanding....home made carmel choclate fudge ice cream to finish....wow..."

  • "Great food, comfort food with high quality ingredients and just enough of a twist to make it interesting. The pasta was spot on, home made and the perfect texture. We asked to server to do all of our selections and she brought us a great symbiotic meal. We had the stroganoff pasta and the duck casoulet. Both cooked to perfection."

  • "Easily one of the very best burgers I've ever had. I don't order anything else because it is so good. Get the mushroom and egg appetizer, it's also very good."

  • "Returned for another great dining experience. In house created cocktails with pate appetizer were exceptional. Rainbow trout & fettuccine delicious. Cheese pairing with sherry great dessert choice. Ben the waiter was very attentitive to our needs. Will definitely come back soon."

  • "Been for dinner but went for brunch on this trip to SLC. Really excellent, great food, good price and efficient service. Highly recommend. My only criticism of this place as ith any eating establishments in the US is the menu doesn't really change however they always have specials here which are usually great."

  • "We LOVE The Copper Onion. We love to cook, we love to travel, and we love to eat out, always at the best places we can find. But we haven't eaten anywhere (including at restaurants with the current reigning "Top Chef") that we like as much as The Copper Onion. Everything we have tried - which, by now, is most of the menu, including many daily specials - is delicious and memorable. The preparations are creative and yet completely earnest. It's all about the food at this restaurant, and the incredible tastes are something that you savor until you find time to get back for another meal. We eat here anytime we can get a table, and we make reservations well in advance to insure that we don't have to wait too long for a chance."

  • "Feel like I don't need to tell people about this place - food is great, nice energy, and wonderful service. Like Yogi Berra said "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded." We are always happy to get in, just need to plan in advance, or come early knowing you are going to sit and have a drink."

  • "When our food arrived, I noticed immediately that there was almost no mayo on my burger, so I ate my side salad and waited for our server to come check on us so I could ask for a dollop. After 5 minutes, she still hadn't come to check on us and I asked the other server waiting next to us if she could bring some. She said she would tell our server. After 9 minutes, our server finally graced us with her presence and asked if everything was ok. I told her I would like a little mayo for the burger. She took our empty water bottle & I assumed she was going to fill it & bring it back for us. It was still another 3 minutes before she came back with the mayo ~and, she didn't bring water. My burger was cold/cheese congealed by that time. Not happy."

  • "We dined on the early side because reservations were hard to get. Had ricotta dumplings that were delicious. Fried calamari app also excellent with tangy aioli. Three vegetable sides were lovely especially the sautéed rapini and shisito peppers. Shared the steak in a wonderful sauce on farro. The frustration was the rapid fire service without a break. There was no coordination between courses. Once the food landed the server forgot to refill our water. Dessert ice cream was tasty. All that said, I would go back and recommend it to a friend."

  • "I ordered the duck confit scramble off the specials menu instead of sticking to the main brunch menu. I usually have the romaine salad and split it with the person I'm with and then lean towards the steak and eggs or a pasta dish for a main with maybe a side of salted peppers. The scramble was served with a side of hash brown potatoes. That's it. This dish was well prepared but too bland for my tastes. Still love this place and will certainly return but I will not second guess myself in the future."

  • "Wow! What an amazing experience! I was so impressed with the variety in the lunch choices. Everything is local and made that day! Including the bread. The Risotto was amazing and the mushrooms were perfect texture of tender, spongy and very fresh! They also serve locally made soda and beer. The service was impeccable and the food and beverage, right down to my 'Tea Grotto' chamomile and ginger tea. Perfect. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "I have been dining out in SLC for years and was really wanting to dine somewhere new and fresh. There were so many great reviews about this restaurant and was looking forward to seeing if it was all the hype. Well, I am here to tell you it absolutely was! We had the mussles for an app, then I have to say I had one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had.....the halibut! I know you wouldn't think that fish in Salt Lake would be amazingly fresh, but it literally fell apart when I cut into it....so tender and delicious. I also really enjoyed the ambiance, service was great, and reasonably priced. This is my new "go to" restaurant for business, friends, recommendation for UT visitors. Excellent dining experience!"

  • "I was so excited to eat here because I'd heard so many great things about it. The room it'self was very bright and welcoming with great design, however there was nothing special about the food. Perhaps I ordered wrong, but the prices were extremely high ($20 for a bowl of Strogonoff) so i picked a lower priced item. The dish had very little flavor. The server was very nice when one of the people at our table asked to have their fish cooked more and was very attentive overall. While it was a great enviornment, I would not eat here again."

  • "We had a fabulous meal at The Copper Onion. We ordered 6 small plates to share among the four of us and enjoyed all of them. Two pasta dishes made our "main courses" and they were also fantastic. We would definitely return."

  • "I read the reviews people said they had the best burgers and they were right. I also had this griddled cauliflower appetiser OMG wow."

  • "We have been to Copper Onion several times and we have always loved the food. We love the meat and cheese plates for appetizers. We made a reservation and didn't have to wait when we arrived. This time we had the hamburger, Sablefish, and Lamb and they were all delicious."

  • "We have been to the Copper Onion many times, and they keep us coming back for more! The food is always above average and the service is friendly and very helpful. We arrived about 30 min early for our reservation and they had no problem sitting us right then. We also had our 3 month old son with us, but the front of house didnt skip a beat! They sat us in a perfect spot where we had enough room to enjoy the atmosphere and the impeccable food."

  • "Finally got a reservation. The food was good, portions were appropriate and not over sized. Wine and cocktail menu were solid and the diner menu was manageable and did not have so many options which I prefer. It allows the chef to focus on the task at hand and not be a jack of all trades Fairly loud and crowded. They seemed to be in a hurry to get us in and out which was noticeable. This was both good and bad. The service was super prompt and we did gt a lot of attention but serving the main course before we had completed appetizers is not the hallmark of great service. Both my wife and I felt a bit rushed."

  • "Always busy so reservations are suggested. We started with a shared order of mussels in a pepper cream sauce that were outstanding. The sauce was creamy rather than cream, good garlic flavor and the fresh cracked pepper was flavorful and added some kick to the dish. We were doing a burger lunch, so three of 4 had the burger. The beef has an almost buttery consistency and the burger comes with grilled onions, an aioli, and lettuce and tomato (cheese is just a buck extra) on a house made bun. Incredibly rich. I would hold the aioli next time, which put the fat content over the top for me. Sons loved it. We also had a side of house pickles, which are worth trying. Wife had house special salad, which was also very good."

  • "Food was delicious, though my wife's "well done" hamburger was still pretty red inside. They were quick to apologize and fix her a brand new one cooked to perfection! 5 stars all the way!"

  • "I took my friend for her birthday to the Copper Onion for the first time the other day. Both of us had the Lobster Fettuchine and we devoured it. The food was delicious! It was also fun to be downtown and have a good view of the street and get caught up in the ambience of the city. I will be back soon!"

  • "We had reservations for 4 made one month in advance and the best we could do was a 6 p.m. seating on Saturday. Good thing we arrived on time because this restaurant must be the most popular in Salt Lake City. The place was full at 6 and when we left, The service was almost too efficient. Plates disappeared almost instantly after the last bite. The food was very good and was served at the right temperature. Wiine was a tad warm, but chilled on request. At our table the meat loaf, trout and cassoulet were the best. The pork chop was very good, but slightly less so.The olive oil cake was worth every calorie and the homemade sorbet intensely flavorful. This is a very good restaurant, but do not plan to linger"

  • "Heard a lot about this place, and my wife and I wanted to check it out. Got in early (5 pm) so no problem getting seated. It did get crowded and noisy later, but still the ambiance was great. Service fine, food outstanding, wine list very good. Overall, great experience."

  • "This is the first time I was disappointed with a meal at Copper Onion. I ordered the bbq brisket, and it tasted old (like a couple days leftovers). However, the brussels sprouts were very tasty. I usually order the burger with the arugula salad or frites and it is always cooked perfectly."

  • "First time eating here (visiting SLC from TX.) Although the reviews on multiple sites looked promising, I was a bit skeptical . But the restaurant certainly lived up to the reviews. Excellent all-around: very attentive service, interesting menu, good wine list and excellent food. The menu is a nice balance of predictable, standard fare and more avant-garde, inventive and interesting choices. I'd certainly go back when next in SLC."
