A word from The Cooperage
The Cooperage American Grille, locally owned by Lafayette Residents, Andrew and Merilee McCormick, is a rotisserie-inspired American grill. Chef Partner Erik Hopfinger's extensive menu features American favorites like slow roasted chicken prepared in a glass-encased rotisserie oven, New York steak, beef tenderloin, and our signature burger (made with our own meat grinder at the grill). The Cooperage also offers healthier options, including a selection of salad entreés made with local and organically grown ingredients.

The Cooperage is comfortable for families dining with children and features a large bar area with flat screen TV's, 12 beers on tap, eight wine selections on tap, and vintage cocktail list.

Diner Reviews
  • "We dine at thr Cooperage at least once a month. We love the food and have always had excellent service. Hope you enjoy it as mich as we do."

  • "Patio dining was very pleasant. Shared 2 appetizers - brussel sprouts salad and mac and cheese, both tasty and rich. Reuben sandwich, prime rib sandwich and flank steak were all delicious. (should have ordered medium rare instead of medium but it was still tasty). Fries were plentiful and served in a unique paper sack. Cookies and cream were also delicious - will try the trifle next time. Service was attentive and friendly."

  • "This was our first time to the Cooperage since it opened. We found the staff to be welcoming and very present. After we sat, we were greeted by 3 different people within 3 min. That's service. The food was outstanding and the service went above and beyond the call of duty."

  • "I have now been to Cooperage three times for lunch, and each time keeps getting better and better. I need to give it a try for dinner, as the menu looks yummy and the wine list is over the top fantastic."

  • "The food was good, brussel sprout salad was delicious. Sandwiches were large. Service was great. We sat outdoors and it was surprisingly noisy there which was surprising."

  • "Great outdoor patio drinks good, food just ok. I'd maybe go here for a drink, then walk across the street to Chow for good food."

  • "The our first experience as we entered the restaurant was the even though we had made reservations, we were told that there were still diners at our table who were eating their desert. We had to wait at the bar for about 20 minutes and there was only one seat for the three of us at the bar. Not impressed with this place. Why bother taking reservations if the restaurant doesn't know how to handle a reservation."

  • "We weren't quite sure what to expect when we went for dinner at the Cooperage because we have noted mixed reviews in the past. However, we were pleasantly surprised, and will be back to eat there again. To provide a quick summary: the roasted half chicken was more like a quarter chicken, and was merely average, although the grilled broccoli served with it was excellent. The grilled pork chop, a more flavorful dish overall, was presented in a savory broth. The best part of the meal though was the shaved brussels sprout warm salad; truly delicious! Prices are high, though, and service was just okay. The food came out quickly, but our server appeared more bored than friendly and needed to be prompted several times for different items."

  • "Our party of 4, including one child, had a delicious brunch. The french toast, hamburger, french and sweet potato fries were all outstanding. When we come again we'd prefer to sit outside. The din indoors made it very difficult to hear a person just across the table."

  • "It was my wife's birthday. Every year we choose a different restaurant to take each other to for a surprise. This was the first time in about 20 years that I did not take her to San Francisco. It was the best I could ever have imagined. My wife loved it , the food was fantastic and we really didn't want to leave. After dinner was relaxing, the weather was perfect in Lafayette and we could not have been more pleased. I normally don't like dinning outside but this was good as it gets. It is now on our most preferred list Dr. RSR"

  • "We moved to Lafayette from SF two years ago and I find the outdoor dining at The Cooperage to be really awesome. My favorite meals there are brunch on the patio, a burger at the bar, or a dinner with friends."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "We wanted to dine outside but there was not a table available. Did not really like inside dining."

  • "We went here for my husbands birthday on a Thursday night. His margarita was horrible, tasted watery and lacked flavor. A second attempt proved no better so he gave up and ordered wine. We would have expected a more comprehensive wine list, given the restaurant name. His 32$ ribeye was ordered medium rare but came out raw and chewy, which was disappointing. My pot roast was a tasty dish with a nice horseradish sauce but needed more of the au jus with it. The Caesar salad was very good. though they charged extra for anchovies-but they were excellent anchovies. Truffle parmesan fries were really good."

  • " Food was slightly better than average -- even disappointing. At that price-point, The Cooperage was definitely not worth the visit and have not plans to return or recommend."

  • "One of my favorite places and I will continue t go back!"

  • "I now know where the good restaurants are hiding, and they are not in walnut creek! Hit up the cooperage for Californian food fit for foodies. Had the warm Brussel sprout salad topped with a pouched egg and bacon. Delish! This was my favorite from the night! They also have wine on tap and by the glass and bottle. As well as fabulous looking drink list I'm dying to try! Finally! This place is awesome! To top it off one of the members of green day popped in... Word is getting out how great the food is here!"

  • "The noise level is so over the top that you can't even have a conversation with the person sitting across the table from you. The food is OK, but nothing special. There are much better places in Lafayette to have a nice meal."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Brought 2 friends here for dinner. We ended up sitting there for 2+ hours catching up, enjoying the atmosphere etc. The chef came by and said hi as did the Asst GM & the owners. It was a great night. Had the ribs, seasonal veggies, the soup and french dip. Coffee & donuts continue to be a real winner for dessert!"

  • "I have had lunch at Cooperage four times now. It is a fun, lively, very NOISY atmosphere. The food is good, but not outstanding. The sandwiches are good and very large, but not unusual. Sandwiches can easily be split between two people. The Kennebec fries are HOT and are outstanding! (Thanks to the smart people of Presque Isle, Maine, for growing them!) The service has always been above average with ice tea refills before asking! Very enjoyable lunch."

  • "I have high hopes for Cooperage! I love the outdoor seating and the bar area. The drinks are really tasty but also very pricey. It is the food that really lets me down. The food is average, at best, not anywhere near the prices they charge. Also, the servings are big, but the real food - the meat, the fish, etc. on a salad/plate is sized small. Again, this would be no big deal if the prices were $10-$15 cheaper than they are, but the prices are set for the area so they should up the protein portions."

  • "The food was not at all like the pictures in their ads. Good but not great. Small portions. Expensive and noisey."

  • "We celebrated our 53rd wedding anniversary and sat outdoors. Our waitress was very friendly and accomodating. The food was great. we plan to go back soon."
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "Enjoyed the simple, comfortable interior ambiance. Service was attentive. The mac and cheese was runny, NOT creamy but decent. Salads were hearty with respectable portions. Enjoyed the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. Topped off the meal with a shared chocolate s'more dessert. Chocolate square didn't melt and was tough to break. Won't order this dessert ever again. May give Cooperage another shot in the future."

  • "Food very good however pasta dish was clumpy. Decor beautiful but the noise level is crazy loud. After dining we were exhausted from trying to talk over and hear conversation so no dessert was ordered as we were eager to leave. Will go back and try dining on patio."

  • "Food was very good. We had sandwiches and salads, all were very good. Service was very good but noise levels were very high which made it difficult at times to hear conversation at our table."

  • "Excellent for food, fun, parties, and ambiance. It's noisy and sometimes hard to hear, but it's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and we've been back several times since it opened. It's always busy, so make reservations first."

  • "This was my third time dining at The Cooperage and it was a great disappointment. Our waitress virtually ignored us and we waited over an hour for our food. We were given a complimentary round if drinks with our meal."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "I was not impressed with the Cooperage, the noise level was not acceptable and the food was Average to Good and overpriced. The service provider was very pleasant and some what attentive, but SLOW. Had to ask for everything, from water to wine glasses and bread. Had fun but would not go back for Dinner, may be lunch."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "The following was great - brussel sprout salad, heirloom tomato appetizer, truffle fries, pasta, bread pudding w/ pecans dessert. The french dip was so-so, mostly because the dip didn't have much flavor."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Great brunch, lunch and dinner spot! We've brought our infant and it's been so easy having him there, too! Highly recommend the Mack n Cheese and the Reuben! The service is always awesome!"
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "The food is very good but the desserts don't keep up. Need to improve to match the entrees. Tried several and they were no better than mediocre."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Had dinner. Hamburger ordered medium well was 50% pink, soup was so salty couldn't finish it, french fries seemed 2-days old; dry and hard, wine by the glass was noticeably old like it had been on the back shelf in the fridge for months, the brussel sprouts were undercooked and the bacon was rock hard as well as the the tasteless onion rings. The server had a flat affect. We were placed in a booth near the back bar where the air conditioner was blasting arctic chill in our faces and when we asked for this to be turned down, the only thing we noticed was that the hostess put on her own sweater! The waiter and busboy hung out in a corner near our table and should have used the restroom to readjust their clothing and more! Need I say more?"

  • "This is a restaurant to go to if you like a place with "buzz". So much buzz you will have a difficult time hearing your table mates. The food is average and not very inventive. The chicken came not truly done, the chicken with the fettucine so in such small amounts they were hard to find and these bits cost an extra $3. Not worth it! The wine list is adequate though there are perhaps only 3 bottles under $40, the rest all well above $50 and some over $100. Really, in an average food place drinking a $100 bottle of Merry Edwards Pinot Noir, I think not. There are so many good restaurants in the area this is one you do not need to try. Will we go again? Not for a very long time."

  • "Cooperage is a new, very nice, open, energetic venue, but the food doesn't (yet) live up to their apparent popularity. The food overall rates a "B". You can find a better burger at Roam or Chow nearby. The shortribs/pot roast was just OK, with small portions. The pork chop was a bit fatty, but the fava bean succotash was quite good. Some of the issues may be solved as the restaurant "ages". We enjoyed trying out the wines on tap, and they have a large beer selection. We'll wait a few more months before we try Cooperage again."

  • "The cocktails and wine are expensive but notable in quality and presentation. A lot of fun. The food is adequate though not remarkable in any way. Portions are large. An easy place to enjoy."

  • "The place was hopping when we arrived at 7:30. Apparently Thursday night is big there. We all had some thing different for dinner and all enjoyed the food. Hamburger very juicy and flavorful, salmon outstanding, two pastas good. I felt the menu could have been more imaginative. Glad we sat outside as the bar and inside we're extremely noisy!"

  • "Way too loud, we were seated next to the bar and it was impossible to have a conversation. Our server was really good and attentive. Wasn't crazy about the menu--very standard stuff, although what was served was good quality. Next time I will only sit outside I think that that would be a much nicer dining experience.'"
