This was our second time at the Compass Star. Both times the food was well prepared with detailed attention to taste and appearance. Rachel uses locally sourced ingredients. A special part of the experience was the ability to chat with Chef Rachel and get her take on the food. While the setting (across the street from a bail bondsman's office) is soso, the food more than makes up for it. We will be back.

This was the second time that we've been to the Compass Star. Our first visit several months ago was not bad; the menu was interesting, prices seemed a bit high (but a lot of effort went into the preparation), and we try to patronize Martinez restaurants when we can. Our recent visit left me wondering if we should give it one more try or just move on to another restaurant. I had the gnocchi, which was very good, and a pulled pork slider which was very dry and disappointing. My wife had the hamburger which she thoroughly enjoyed. Adding one glass of house wine and one $6 bottled beer brought our tab to $52 so with tip we were a bit over $60. I would not go back if I was particularly hungry since the portions are tasty but small.

Although the ambiance at the restaurant's evening meal didn't match the fine dining, terrific, 5-star food, it still worked. I think the chef has come up with a great business plan to keep the overhead low, while keeping the quality, diversity, and creativeness of the food high. Everything was wonderful. We look forward to going again to try the homemade sausages; and then again and again to taste the ever-changing prix fixe menu items.

Family referred us to this gem, and we are grateful. The food is excellent, and the chef and staff are very friendly and fun! It is obvious that Chef Rachel loves her work/art and enjoys sharing it with her guests! You don't have to be a carnivore to enjoy the fare here, but if you are, you won't be disappointed.

Fabulous, seasonal menu prepared with love. My husband and I stopped in on a Friday evening and couldn't have had a better meal. I had the prix fixe menu with lamb shanks and hot flatbread, he had gnocchi and the charcuterie plate. If you love good food made with care you'll enjoy the Compass Star! Dessert was perfect - good portion size, perfect lightness and sweetness. Cute little place, completely worth a visit, we'll be back!

  • Night After Valentine's Day

We don't like the Valentine's day crush, so I was looking for a new place for the next night. I stumbled across Compass Star by surfing Open Table and Yelp. It was almost like we were on vacation in a different country. There were only 14 seats, and if you're looking for Il Forniao like ambiance, this is not the place. Where is separated itself from the Il Forniao-like chains was the food. Since it's a fixed price menu, we happened to be there on a Prime Rib night. I asked for and received the end cut. It was terrific and the horse radish was fresh, not out of a jar. We chose the wine pairing and it was spot on. The Port that we had with the flour-less chocolate cake at the conclusion of our meal was superb.

The staff was very friendly and welcoming but the food was absolutely unremarkable. Would not recommend this restaurant. They need to put up a curtain between the kitchen and the dining area. No "ambience" whatsoever! My husband got a very bad stomach ache at 2AM from something he ate. The wine pairing with the Pre Fixe menu was awful. Sorry to say, they really need to rethink the menu!

The special thing about the Compass Star is Rachel, the chef, and her attentive staff. Their excitement about the week's menu and where their ingredients are sourced is what makes this dining experience special. The house-made charcuterie is delicious and fascinating to learn about. All the other food is yummy. It feels like going to eat at a foodie-friend's home. The space is possibly better in summer when you can dine on the outside patio. Inside it feels a little like the lunchtime sandwich bar it is, with fluorescent light in the back. So not the most plush, romantic setting.

The charcuterie tray was by far the best part of our meal. It came with 6 (I think) different types of salami or sausage. The chef brought it out and described each one. The were all tasty and interesting, and surprisingly different. Good local beer menu. We had a nice night here.

I eat at the Compass Star, on average, once a week, though my record is 4 times in one week. They really know how to put together a top-notch meal here. The ingriedients are always fresh and everything is made in house. Each week, there are at least two different lunch specials, usually a sandwich and a salad, and a Prix Fixe evening special, in addition to the regular menu items. The prices are very fair for the quality of food. The service is great, and the staff goes out of their way to make me feel at home. This place is a foodie's delight.

  • Nice to see in Martinez

It is nice to see a restaurant in Martinez that serves dishes made from local ingredients. The menu didn't have tons of choices, but it was fun to try new things. The ham & cheese beingets covered with powdered sugar were very unusual but also very tasty. We had small plates including the beingets, a caesar salad (nice but not spectacular) and ravioli made with the eggs & cheese. I wasn't a big fan of the ravioli but my boyfriend liked them. I liked that there was outside seating. I also have to commend the staff as they were super attentive displaying excellent customer service and the food and beverages were delivered promptly. 3 different staff came to our table to make sure everything was good. I really like this place. Try it.

Nice local food & wine, nice prices. Polenta is the best! Memorable pork chop. Charcuterie: Wow, tho some of it, like the andouille, is "out there" so be prepared. Don't expect a big-deal high end restaurant. Pace is slow, service unpretentious, low-key. We had to slow our mindsets to the pace, but adjustment paid off in enjoyment. We even ended up lingering, had an extra glass of good Zin from Lodi, spent pretty much the whole evening there. It is a very small place. We could not get one of the few outdoor tables, which would be ideal on a warm night (if no smokers out there), but one of the few inside tables worked fine, too. It is easy to see the owners/operators love their work -- kinda makes one envious! Cheers to the Compass Star!

This tiny little restaurant packs it in with amazing food and fantastic service! We had both the Prix Fixe menu as well as several small plates for our table, and the quality is amazing. The Executive Chef even came to our table to greet us, thank us for dining there, and ask if there was anything he could do to insure we had a great time. Awesome! Our server was bubbly, personable, and very attentive.. The wine, superb... all while dining outside on the patio. How cool! We are so coming back! SOON!

We were a party of six, the only customers at the restaurant. While we knew to expect small plates, tapas style we did not intend to share. As a result, one of our party who did not order a salad, waited over 45 minutes before his first item arrived. To make things worse, one his items never arrived. The quality of the food was good but the poor service made the experience unenjoyable.
