Columbia Firehouse, is a modern American brasserie and bar. Diner Reviews
  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary here in 2014 and the staff were amazing in making it a memorable occasion. (Missy was awesome! ) The food was great. The wine was amazing. The desserts I'd go back for alone. We had a great time! I'm glad we chose to spend our special day there!"

  • "Not sure if it is Open Table or me but every time I reserve through Open Table we end up with a lousy table. Tonight it was at the foot of the stairs leading from the bar area. This meant a constant stream of traffic past our table and the clomp of shoes on the steps going up and down. That being said, the waitstaff was very knowledgeable and attentive throughout our meal. The menu had a good selection although my wife was surprised that the Chophouse entrees were all ala carte. I had ordered my steak medium and received a medium-rare, but still a good steak. We were celebrating a birthday and after the waiter presented us with a desert menu which we declined - he brought out some apple-pear fritters with a birthday candle."

  • "Overall great experience! We live in Old Town and we finally made it here for early dinner! Service and good were awesome! Missy was a great server! We definitely will go again and it would be a great spot for a group event!"

  • "Great initial impression but that wore off, generally, the venue needs to be refreshed, especially the carpets and details. We were Seated in the atrium, maybe because we had kids, but it was noisier than it should have been. Brunch was over-priced and under-sized for the price. Impressive wine and beer list, classic bar - shame I was not drinking!"

  • "A co-worker of mine reached out to a friend from the area for restaurant suggestions and the Columbia Firehouse came highly recommended. Our steaks came out the way we wanted. The waitress was very friendly and made excellent suggestions. This place didn't disappoint. We would definitely return."

  • "Last month, I would have given the Firehouse five stars for food and service. We were in the lower (more romantic) dining area. Our food was fantastic. This visit was very different. We were seated in the brighter, casual dining room (which was fine, just casual and less romantic). I had the fried chicken plate, which they are supposed to be well known for. It was dry, the crust was soggy where it sat in gravy, and the mashed potatoes were just ok. The coleslaw was wilted and had no dressing and very little flavor. Last time we had a basket of fresh, hot biscuits and cornbread. This time we got two pieces of cold cornbread and when we asked for biscuits, the server said they don't give them out in baskets. We won't be returning."

  • "What a great dining experience! The food was great, service was exemplary and the wine list was extensive. The restaraunt is situated in the most charming old firehouse giving a special vintage feel even though the decor is very modern. I would definitely visit again."

  • "My wife and I were returning to the site of our first date while celebrating our 29th anniversary. While the the restaurant had changed hands the upstairs dining room looked virtually the same. We were treated quite well by the all the staff. I was quite impressed that our waiter, Gustavo, was familiar with the history of the building and the progression of owners up to the current Columbia Firehouse. A lovely and memorable evening!"

  • "It was our first time at Columbia Firehouse and the food was awesome! A very laid-back but elegant place to dine."

  • "Seated immediately upon arriving even though we were early for our reservation. The room we were seated in was beautiful. We had the rib eye, fried chicken, NY strip, and tile fish for our entrees. Everything was cooked perfectly! For sides we had the fancy green beans, horseradish potato gratin, and mashed potatoes - all of these were amazing and I highly recommend them. We shared a dessert that was little bite size cupcakes, and other sweets - so good!"

  • "Alexandria is packed with restaurants all over and King street seems to be the central hub for all things (so much so the Masonic temple is amines to looked directly down king street...) - but I digress, of all the various kinda of food available in the area if you are into a solid American fair with a foodie twist then the Columbia Firehouse is an excellent choice - I have eaten here twice in the last six months and had a very high level meal at a very reasonble price."

  • "The building is interesting, but the food was nothing special."

  • "I love the Columbia Firehouse and have rarely been disappointed. Having said that, I booked this last reservation for Father's Day and they sat me and my parents downstairs with two large families who had 3 babies. They need to be more mindful when seating folks- especially when they have reservations."

  • "The staff was helpful and attentive. I had oyster poor boy which I thought was a bit short on oysters. Also the oysters lacked crunch - couldn't compare to those at Majestic. The fried onion rings were spectacular. I also suggest lowering the volume of the music, or changing to something that is easier to ignore. At noon it in not pleasant to have music and volume more suited to a bar at 6 pm "

  • "We were particularly impressed with the quality and uniqueness of the food. Portions were adequate. The menu had variety. Everything was flavorful without being over pretentious. Good selection of beer and wine. Service was great."

  • "The service level was less than par. The Virginia Ham Biscuits tasted like they have been sitting out since 1883 and cured with salt each year till 2014. "Have you ever tried Virginia Ham?" was the response from the waitress/waiter. The menu seemed blah and could use some serious work. Do they treat customers who booked with OpenTable differently? "

  • "We used to really enjoy the Columbia Firehouse, but they have changed their menu. We're not crazy about the selection-it seems like they are moving towards smaller plates and steaks. Wasn't overly impressed and drink were expensive."

  • "Disappointed with the scallops. They were very small and the side dish that they came with was not good. Will not order that again. But was very happy with the pimiento cheese appetizer. Too expensive to not get a good main dish though!"

  • "This was my second time dining at Columbia Firehouse. Both experiences were great with regard to service, and the restaurant has wonderful ambiance. The food, however, was a different story. My first time here I had what was probably the best sea bass in my life, so I was disappointed to see it had been replaced on the menu by "Tile fish." This was something I'd never heard of, but because of my prior good experience, I ordered it. It was horrible! Overly salty, not much real flavor of its own, and not all the bones removed. I will dine at Columbia Firehouse again, but only when I find something familiar and reliable on the menu. I'm not a steak eater, and the non steak options here are limited."

  • "We came late in the evening, around 9:45. They were accomodating to move our reservation. The food just just okay. It was expensive. The service was just okay too. Plenty of other great spots in the area to dine at that are better than here. If you want the daily special you need to show up by 8pm I guess because they don't make a lot of it."

  • "Went to the Columbia Firehouse for the first time this past weekend after reading excellent reviews on Open Table and having enjoyed other Neighborhood Restaurant Group Properties like Vermilion and Rustico. The restaurant was very cute and not overly crowded- showed up early for our reservation and they were able to seat us promptly. Our server was attentive but not overly so! Now onto the food, the menu looked promising and my guest and I each had a cocktail, an appetizer, and an entree, then shared dessert. The food was just ok, not bad, not great, just ok. For the price point, I was left wanting for more. I wasn't disappointed, but the meal wasn't memorable so I don't think I'll be back."

  • "We had a lovely time at the Columbia Firehouse. We ate good food and enjoyed a nice atmosphere. It was a little too cool so they turned the air down. Good experience and a nice way to start the Memorial Day weekend off. "

  • "Everyone said it was great, and it was! The wine list is extensive, and they offered a wide variety of specialty drinks. The rosemary carrots were awesome."

  • "We just ran in on a Tuesday night with our 5 month old. The high ceiling made the noise level higher so it was impossible for her to bother anyone. Fantastic food and great ambiance. Highly recommend."

  • "The good and the company was the highlight of the evening. Our server could have been more attentive."

  • " Nice location in Old Town. I had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was not seasoned at all just covered in batter. The idea is sweet and savory, correct? A little salt and pepper or other type of poultry seasoning would have made the dish much better."

  • "Just steps off of King Street is the great "new American" gem. Super cocktail list, try the daily specials, BISON SHORT RIB STROGANOFF! Wow. "

  • "We made reservations 24 hours ahead of time, and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly our appetizers and entrees were served (considering that it was a Friday night). Drinks and dinner were delicious, and our server was attentive. I've had brunch at CF before, and can now highly recommend their dinner, too!"

  • "We went for mothers day brunch. The food was great and imaginative, as were the drinks. The service was excellent, some of the best I have had in NoVA. The decor is amazing. You must try the Irish Brigade Coffee, you won't be disappointed. "

  • "We had a reservation for 7:30 on a Friday and were seated promptly. When we inquired about sitting outside we were accommodated. It was lovely outside, we could talk and enjoy the beautiful evening. Sit out side if you can. The food was good. My son had the special, bison and ate it all. I went for a salad and a shrimp appetizer as I don't eat pork and wasn't in the mood for a burger. Prices were reasonable and the service excellent."

  • "I have been to Columbia Fire House previously and remember being extrememly impressed with both the atrium seating and the food. For Mother's Day weekend we returned with out of town family on a Saturday night. The atrium seating was again really nice as were the onion rings and fries with goat cheese dipping sauce. However, entrees were just ok, and I think a bit over priced for their quality and size. Last time I had the house filet which was really good and this time I got the fried chicken which was fine. My fiancé got the special plate, bison stroganoff which was just ok and some of the other guests got the tile fish. The big hit seemed to be the pork shank. Worth going back to at some point. "

  • "We chose Columbia Firehouse for my mother's birthday. I was very happy with the food. We ordered the pimento cheese spread and meat board to start. The cheese was wonderful and my husband said the meat board was great. We all ordered something different for the main course, and each of us were happy with our food. Daniela, our service, provided an outstanding level of service. Lastly, the place is beautiful. "

  • "My friend and I were enthralled with the variety and interesting options on the menu - it was difficult to choose just a few items. That said, aside from the delicious spring pea soup, tasty fried onion rings, and complimentary corn muffins - the meal was a bit of a disapointment, perhaps because everything sounded so wonderful in print. Our waitress, Sarah, exceptional though. I'd definitely try it again though. A previous experience there I had their charcuterie - homemade sausages and cheese selection, which was amazing. "

  • "Such a grand atmosphere for such tucked away establishment. We wanted to dine in a Historic building, and this exceeded our expectations by far. The drinks were right on point, the food was excellent, and the Italian coffee hit the spot. Definitely will return again and again"

  • "This review is based on the 6+ visits. My wife, friends, and I are always satisfied with the service, food and drinks every time we go. Not one misstep so far. As a cocktail drinker their menu of classic cocktails is good with the Sazerac being my favorite. Also, there is always something on draft beer menu that catches my eye. The tuna tacos during happy hour are not to be missed. Actually, all their HH food is very good! The highlight of all of our visits was one anniversary where my wife had the largest and tastiest scallops she's ever had. Period. Bar none. They were exquisite. Better than Morton's. Lastly, we had a firefighter friend who was visiting from Houston and was given a tour of the old building by the manager. Made his day!"

  • "Enjoyed dinner, the service was very helpful there. We ate there with my son and the servers took great care of him. It isn't the greatest kid friendly place, but the people know how to deal with kids and do a good job. Also as I have a gluten allergy was a bit nervous but the server was very understanding w/ my allergy and made a lot of good recommendations around what to eat etc. There are two hard ciders along with a gluten free beer to have there as well. Very enjoyable"

  • "My girlfriend and I were visiting DC from Chicago and this is the place that I wanted to take her the most. It was my second time there and her first. The place is vibrant, the people are great, and the experience as a whole was tremendous. The bar staff is very knowledgeable about spirits and the wait staff was very attentive. Our meals were well proportioned and tasted great! I now have had brunch and dinner here and I highly recommend this place for either/both. We will definitely be back! l also must say that the restored firehouse setting tugs at my former Firefighter/Paramedic nostalgia. Well done! "

  • "Enjoyed dinner on 4/19/14 with my wife. It was an early dinner so the restaurant was still pretty quiet. My wife had shrimp cocktail and said it was very, very good (5 large Gulf Shrimp). Her NY strip was delicious an she enjoyed the Bourbon bacon butter on it. I had the Bison Stroganoff and it was excellent. Meat fell off of the shirt rib just as our server Gustavo promised and the hand made pappardelle noodles were wonderful! Great service, very attentive, wonderful food - wonderful experience overall!"
