A word from The Columbia Firehouse
Columbia Firehouse, is a modern American brasserie and bar. The 120 seat first floor focuses on familiar comfort food, a nifty raw bar, small plates for sharing, steamed mussels and fresh salads, sandwiches and suppers. Meanwhile, work will continue on the second floor with a space destined to become a stylish, intimate chop house. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "2nd time there and relatively disappointed. Wanted upper level but apparently can't get with 7:30 reservations. Was in 'back room' that was ill-equipped for number of people in room. Had back of my chair hit about a dozen times by people coming and going. Food well-prepared. Scallops on bed of chopped stuff very nice. Bar noise goes far here so if you want a quiet romantic dinner not sure this is as good as I thought it was first time."

  • "This restaurant came recommended by a local friend, so our group was excited about having dinner there on our one night in Alexandria. We had a wonderful and knowledgeable waitress. The menu was quite limited. Appetizers were interesting, so we ordered several. The entrees were good, but we felt it was pricey for the choices we made. The decor is nice, but with cherry blossoms at peak in DC we expected to see a full house. It was only about 2/3 full, which gave us a clue... We wouldn't recommend this as a place to go if you just have one evening to spend."

  • "Our food was great! Their scallops were amazing and many of their dishes were definitely unique. The one down side was we scheduled a reservation via Open Table for 8:15, but we did not get a table until 8:35 or 8:40 even though we had a reservation. The head manager did come out to apologize for the delay, and the waiting service was very good. The downstairs has a very energetic bar scene, so its hard to hear and have a conversation, but elsewhere in the location it is pretty good."

  • "We ordered some cheddar puff pastries as an appetizer. Very disappointing & boring, barely tasted the cheddar. Our entrees arrived lukewarm...but when I heated up my leftovers the next day, it was very good. The coffee with dessert was also cold, but our waiter brought a new hot cup right away. Our server gave wonderful service & was knowledgeable about the menu. Maybe it was just an off night, we would try it again. For the price, we just had higher expectations."

  • "We were staying in Old Town and saw great reviews on the Columbia Firehouse and were not disappointed. The ambiance and food were super but our server Olesya went above and beyond."

  • "The Columbia Firehouse is one of my go-to places when I have visitors in town....great food, terrific service and right in the heart of old town....."

  • "Since this is the old Portner's I had to try it. The Thai mussels were very tasty, if small. we tried gougeres and bone marrow for starters and they were pretty decent. The ribs (nightly special on a Tuesday) were very tender but the sauce was not spicy (as billed) and not as smoky as we liked. My friend's salmon was very good, with nice veggies on the side. Chocolate custard type dessert was creamy and very tasty. Drinks - very good. We ate at 6 on a Tuesday, so noise level low. Overall i thought it was very respectable, good food, responsive service, so we would happily eat there in the future. I'd probably just sit at the bar though - brings back good memories!!"

  • "Took a friend there for her birthday. Service and ambience was very good. Food was ok at best. Typical DC restaurant. Pay too much for small portions. Would try somewhere else first."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and I am pleased I tried it. I love the décor and the food is very good. The energy can be high but it is still a great place. I recommend it and will be a regular."

  • "Most items on the menu such as the bison stroganoff, scallops and tilefish were excellent. The steak ,however, was not grilled and ringed in fat...not recommended."

  • "I was in Alexandria for just one night and choose to dine at Columbia Firehouse. I was not disappointed. I had some oysters - absolutely delicious. My entree was just as good. I liked the variety of wines to select from. Service was very good. Attentive, helpful with descriptions of dishes and made the experience one to remember."

  • "My wife and I love this restaurant. When we are undecided about where to eat in Old Town, this is always near the top of our list. The mussels are wonderful. Not a large menu but always something interesting and tasty."

  • "The food was average here. I would recommend this as a just above average restaurant for this area. Outside seating was nice. Service was good as well."

  • "Great service and ambiance EXCELLENT mussels. The only reason why I go. Went with friends who both got steak. Neither one was satisfied with his or her meal. The steak was pricy yet small and was virtually flavorless. We ordered several appetizers to share. Lackluster as well. Well, except for the french fries but how can one mess those up???? I haven't been back since January because of this disappointment. I will go back but only for the mussels."

  • "Good food/service and very child friendly: We were quietly eating our meal (with 2 small children) when 'those' old-town plutocrats sat down next to us. They immediately looked at our children and asked the waitress for a more private table. The waitress said I need to talk with my manager- returned 30 seconds later and said this was the only table available (the restaurant was 3/4 empty). They promptly left. High-five to the Firehouse- we'll be back!!!"

  • "We were there for a birthday. Our table was in a quiet location that let us talk and enjoy each other's company. We really enjoyed our food. For dessert we ordered two so we could try a lot, and ended up with an extra dessert for the birthday guy. We had a great time."

  • "Went for a birthday dinner after reading reviews. We were really impressed with the ambience and overall atmosphere. Ordered the shrimp and kettle of mussels as an appetizer both were excellent with a unique taste. I had the burger which was cooked exactly as I ordered and the other member of my party had the ravioli which was also very good with a hint of apple I believe. Overall great experience and will definitely return. The one down side is the menu is limited with not much to choose from in my opinion."

  • "I had several friends recommend The Columbia Firehouse to me. I finally took my wife there for a special occasion. We arrived for a late dinner, and the place was busy. The hostess, Sarah, had our table ready and seated us promptly. The dining area had lit candles and beautiful stained glass. Our server, Alissa, was very attentive without being overbearing. We had several small plates - tuna tartar tacos, baked pimento cheese, and iron skillet shrimp - which were all delicious. We both had steaks which were cooked perfectly. We finished with a s'more sundae. The wine list is good and the menu has what you are looking for without being so long that you get lost. I will definitely return and try out the gorgeous, dark paneled barroom."

  • "After reading some of the reviews of the CF it seemed like a nice place to try. The service was good, but the food and drinks were just OK, especially for the price. Onion rings and fries were probably the highlight of the night. The porterhouse was cooked perfectly, but the meat itself was unexceptional. My date had the fish, and it was average. For $150, I would expect, and have had, better quality. We noticed that the couple next to us made similar comments about their dishes (fish and stroganoff). Great atmosphere, I'm glad I tried it, but would not go back."

  • "I was in town for a conference and my boss asked me to find a place for three of us to have dinner. We wanted something nice, but not overpriced, lively but not loud. Great chioce! This restaurant is absolutely beautiful! From the gorgeous wood floors and walls to the magnificent stained glass and iron work, it was visually stunning. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We started with salads and shrimp cocktail;, followed by filet mgnons and mashed potatoes and fancy green bean casserole..The steak was perfect - tender, juicy and just the right size. All around, a wonderful experience!"

  • "Always very good food and excellent service, at fair prices. Dinner menu somewhat limited. By the glass wine a little stingy on the pour. Wish theory had sweet potato fires. Keep going back because it's good and reliable."

  • "I made reservations to take my parents to dinner to celebrate their 61st Wedding Anniversary and made note of the special occasion on the Open Table reservation. Upon arrival, we were shown to a lovely, nicely located, quiet table and upon introducing herself, the waitress greeted us with a glass of champagne to kick off the special evening. We ordered an shrimp appetizer and the waitress brought a special tuna tartar taco from "the Chef". My parents are still talking about the tasty Bouillabaisse they had for their main course and my scallops were wonderful. We decided to order one desert to share, however, the waitress surprised us with a plate of warm, cinnamon apple fritters from our special friend "the Chef.""

  • "It is a very nice building, a charm and comfortable place with spacious tables. It maintains the atmosphere of a century ago. Good food although we went just to try for the mussels and they have run out of them, even the restaurant was not busy. That should´t happen on a Saturday night."

  • "We had a nice relaxing brunch with wonderful food, excellent service and very nice brunch beverages. Not an extensive menu but a little of everything you would be interested in for brunch. Great omelets and waffles. An excellent choice off the main drag and away from the Old Town traffic."

  • "Enjoyed my first visit to this place. First had drinks in the bar area, then sat downstairs near the fireplace. Food was great, service good until dessert than slowed down drastically. We were a group of 6, so perhaps waiter felt we were enjoying ourselves and he didn't rush us. Oyster sandwiches were a delight, and the bison stroganoff excellent."

  • "The entire experience was completely unmatched. We went for my dad's birthday and his final say was, "I want to come back because there are so many things on the menu I still want to try, but I'd be afraid that it wouldn't be this amazing the second time around!""

  • "We had brunch here and were pleasantly surprised to discover that it was Restaurant Week and that, unlike other restaurants that limit their offerings during Restaurant Week, The Columbia Firehouse had nearly the entire menu available and still delivered the same stellar service as always! We tried the pimento cheese dip, a gooey treat served in a cast iron pan and accompanied by tasty, house-made bread. We delighted in the oyster sandwich appetizer, which turned out to be mini sliders of just-right fried oysters on buns, all held together by bamboo picks. My friend enjoyed the chicken and waffles while I had the chophouse salad with steak. For dessert we had the ice cream sundae and the banana dessert. We both gobbled everything down!"

  • "Trying to be fancy, Columbia Firehouse has put some interesting foods on their menu. However, from dish to dish in the same section, portion sizes vary wildly. One main course can be too large and another too small for the same person. Service is ok, but not spectacular. Workaday. The prices are such that you are paying for the location as much as the quality of the food. The service does not match the price point."

  • "My boyfriend and I dined here on a Sunday night during restaurant week. The food specials were great and very tasty. I would definitly recommended this place to anyone would would like to try something new. the restaurant itself is very beautiful and fit for a romantic evening out and our waiter Dan took good care of us."

  • "We came to Columbia Firehouse for our anniversary. The service was wonderful, never rushed or too slow. The food was absolutely wonderful. We came during Restaurant Week so we were able to try appetizers, entrees and desserts. We had the mussels, the ravioli, scallops, and then the Chocolate pot de creme and the the berry compote sundae. Everything tasted amazing. The only thing to note was that our reservation was at 6, fairly early for the evening and so the restaurant was very quiet at first even though we were not the only people there. This is fairly common for restaurants of this atmosphere and luxury. I think in the future I would make later reservations as I am someone who gets nervous conversing when a restaurant is quiet."

  • "The food is very good. But the menu is extremely confusing, and requires much explanation from the wait-person. Even then, I was not real sure what I had ordered. The portions are small for the price (4 Day-Boat scallops for $24), so the prices are high. The combinations are interesting (a poached egg on top of the greens with pork belly) and good. We ordered margaritas which are made not with a mix, but actual lime juice, LOTS of lime juice. We complained and our wait-person brought some "sweetener" to take some of the lime out of the taste. She said 'we get this complaint a lot." For 4 people, salads and "medium-priced" entrées, two glasses of wine and two margaritas, the check came to $200 with tip."
