Diner Reviews
  • "We went to the Coachman last Friday, it was surprisingly quiet for 7 on a Friday but enjoyable nonetheless. As an Englishman i was looking forward to their take on British food. By and large the outcome was good, not wholly British but good. the Rabbit terrine and clams and mussels were particularly good as was the hopped cider. One thing which could be done better were the Yorkshire puddings, they were nice and fluffy but served in a very salty jus, it made them soggy and salty and should really have been served on the side. Other than that good and better than the Chronicle review would have you believe"

  • "The Chronicle reviewed Coachman and gave it a very mediocre rating. This is COMPLETELY wrong. The food is outstanding and the cocktails are superb. We eat out often and have been to all the notable SF resturaurants. Coachman is an excellent interpretation/variation on British pub fare. Don't believe everything you read in the newspaper, go there!"

  • "Loved this new find! Great bar - extensive options on whiskey, scotch and boutique cocktails. Loved their line up of the appropriate glassware or vessel for any particular drink. The menu is small and delicious! The steak and Stilton pie was amazing! We had reservations, but would have walked right by if we had not looked up at the right moment. It is placed inconspicuously on Mission Street with very little signage. Will recommend to others and definitely return. They have only been open since March, let's get the word out!!"

  • "We went to The Coachman for Father's Day dinner. Everything was exquisitely prepared - from the clams and mussels to the skate wing to the special $40 prix fixe three-course prime rib dinner. The Yorkshire pudding accompaniment to the prime rib was well puffed and eggy at the same time. Dessert for us was sticky toffee pudding and banofee pie that spoke well for the restaurant's English fare foundations. Cocktails at The Coachman is an absolute must - among the best in the city. A Charles Phan restaurant, The Coachman features craft cocktails that linger deliciously in the balance."

  • "The Coachman is completely under the radar but Charles Phan is serving up some unbelievable food here. Go before this place gets discovered!"

  • "I recently dined here and I found the food marginal. I had the Prime Rib which is much better done at the House of Prime Rib. The menu was simple and the food was average. The prices were high and the place was empty for a Saturday night. The service was good and the space was chic, but the food just didn't live up to the price. I would not recommend this restaurant and will probably not come back unless it was for a drink at the bar."

  • "The food was quite good - tasty, innovative, and interesting use of ingredients. But… our two hot entrees were cold when they were brought to us. I'm guessing this was due to the service, which was awkward and sporadic. Our server came too often some of the time, but then we went long periods without service. Food was cold, wine glasses were taken without being asked if we wanted more, we waited twenty to thirty minutes between each course which made the meal far too long for a week night. This place has potential but we won't go back until the kinks are worked out. It was also extremely loud - very loud music, cement walls. I couldn't hear the person I was with much of the meal."

  • "We don't get out much anymore, so when we're paying a babysitter, we really need dinner to count. From crudites through dessert, the Coachman delivered. It's a great sign, too, that we could have gone with different appetizers and different entrees and still been as excited for our meal. Our only concern is that there wasn't enough people there ... we liked it too much for it to close or change menus. Hoping to go back soon ... maybe to sit at the chef's bar."

  • "Had a very good meal last night at Coachman. The "Crudité with anchovy" was very fresh. Ask for the house ranch. The "Asparagus, peas, brandade, almond butter" was equally fresh and crisp and the almond butter was a nice surprise. "The Steak and Stilton Pie" was very rich and just enough without being overwhelmed. The crust was so good. The stand-out was the "Cured halibut with marinated beets and dill pollen" I could have eaten this all night. Service was polite and nicely paced. Definitely recommend."

  • " The first time we visited was when they had just opened and service was a bit chaotic but we realized that the food was outstanding and the service team extremely friendly. So we went back and both the food and service could not have been better! We shared the carrots, asparagus and brandade appetizers; they were so tasty! our guests choose the Ale but I choose a dry crisp white (I needed some help because the wine list is unusual, the sommelier let me taste two different ones so I could pick, very nice touch). Our waiter warned us that the entrees were substantial so our friends shared the roastbeef (excellent) and my husband and I shared the chicken (outstanding). Lemon meringue dessert perfect! Overall a must do over soon experience!"

  • "We had a 7:15pm reservation. We were seated at 7:20pm, even though the dining room was half empty. Our starters didn't come out until 8:05pm. Entrees came out at 8:30pm. Passed on dessert because we didn't want to spend the night! "

  • "The staff was friendly but their timing was off. We sat for a long time in a relatively empty dining room before we were approached. The order took a long time in coming. The waiter also gave no context for the menu. We were all surprised at the encouragement to share items. It seemed incongruous with the menu. Our waiter was not very knowledgable about the food. Our apps took a long time in coming but the mains they came in just a few minutes. The dessert descriptions were confusing and not in line with what we received. I think this restaurant could be great with more attention to staff training, timing and perhaps a rethinking of the menu, offering more information. p.s. Reduce volume or eliminate nightclub music in bar. "

  • "Most of the stuff on the menu _sounded_ really scary, but every dish I had was delish. I mean, I’ve had bone marrow with escargot before, but this was far and away the best. Plus, full bar!"

  • "we were unwhelmed by both the food and the service. The prime rib portion had a lot of meat along with a lot of fat (which was easily cut off) but was tough and pales in comparison to House of Prime Rib (the adjoining table also ordered this and said the same thing). The knife barely cut it. Skate wing was salty and too lemony. The best dish was the rabbit terrine. Our server seemed to be everywhere but at our table. Overall, for the money, there are lots of other places to eat with better food."

  • "We split 4 apetizers and 1 entree. Very good idea for foodies. Everything was good espacely the carrots and the potted crab. The sound of the music is not good they should have a better system. Total of the bill with the cheaper white wine 115$ for 2 before gratuities."

  • "We dined here last Saturday and tried nearly everything on the menu. Highlights were the potted crab, cured halibut, poutine fries, and sticky toffee pudding. All dishes were beautifully composed and balanced. Bartenders were very friendly, approachable, and knowledgable about their product. Service at the table was friendly, if not overly-so. Our server was knowledgable about each dish and had great wine recommendations. Will definitely be back."

  • "The layout and decor of the restaurant is rather nice. Overall the service was good. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu. The table ordered 4-5 appetizers which were enjoyed. The entrees ordered were a different story. They ranged from disappointing to barely touched. The bill was rather high, but that was due to the number of cocktails we ordered to compensate for entrees."

  • "Pros: Great cocktails and service Cons: Some of the servings are small (in fairness our server forewarned us about that for specific dishes). Summary: A hidden gem that is worth a try. Especially enjoyed the crabpot as an appetizer."

  • "Pros: - Excellent service; our server was friendly, really knew her stuff and very helpful to our guest who has a gluten allergy - The food was delicious - although the menu descriptions are a little confusing and (honestly) don't reflect how good the dish is. It's tough to get a sense for the dish unless your server describes it. We loved the chicken, the carrots and lentils, the skate wing, mash (very creamy!) and the crab (probably my favorite). The only dish that wasn't great was the halibut crudo, which tasted like vinegar. - Wonderful atmosphere, gorgeous interior - Bitter beers - Easy parking Cons: - Short list of wines by the glass and several were described as "funky" (not in a good way); would be great to expand that"

  • "I like to fancy myself a "foodie" but have to say, The Coachman was a stretch for me. The venue was not my choice so we made the best of it. I think you have to be longing for a taste of the motherland, or really be out for a new adventure. That being said, I ordered the skate & loved the preparation. The lemony butter sauce was perfect, & while a bit difficult and messy to eat, the skate was filling. Unfortunately, 1 order was not available & a while passed before telling us and taking a new order so that the rest of the party was done eating before the new entree came out. The waitress did her best to help the situation, offering a starter salad & comping the dish. I wouldn't go back, but only because it wasn't my cup of tea."

  • "My English boyfriend audibly gasped when he saw the size of the prime rib. Both it and the skate wing were delicious. The chips and gravy were unreal, and even the waldorf salad was extremely tasty. Great food. I wish the decor matched the menu, but maybe that will change over time."

  • "This restaurant is dreadful. Enough said. Do not go there."

  • "Weird menu..not sure waht the point was. Decor was hip SF and the menu seemed to going towards an English restaurant. Steel bench not a great idea, unless the attempt was to be prison-like. Roast beef was good, and sharing was encouraged. Waldorf salad had no resemblance to a normal one…wet, tasteless, more greens than fruit.Creamed spinach was good. People around us seemed to be enjoying the potted crab, but maybe it was that they actually received some bread with it?"

  • "Skate (which was a favorite of our server) was just bland stringy bony whitefish in an oily pool, with a few olives thrown on for good measure. Quite unappetizing. Chicken was bland and puffy, no flavor or texture to it. The menu failed to present any enticing options... It all sounded unappetizing."

  • "Great ambience - was packed on maybe their third Saturday night since opening. Cocktails at the bar very suavely done but no crisp sauvignon blanc on offer :( Prepare ahead dishes all stellar: potted crab, Tartinesque bread, gravy and all desserts - especially banoffee pie with perfect pastry. But flabby grey (but giant) prime rib and badly burnt yorkshire puddings with milky horseradish sauce thing clearly needs work. Skate wing was good and will return to try some of the other interesting sounding dishes but probably not on a Saturday night."

  • "The service was great, the ambience was so so, the noise was hard to speak across the table for two, and the food was British, and maybe that is really the issue. I have always avoided British pub food, and even a great chef cannot turn it in anything other then British pub food. I've definitely had better prime rib elsewhere. The blood sausage has a bizarre mushy quality, and my companion and I could not even finish it. The Waldorf salad was mediocre. On balance I would not recommend this restaurant ."

  • "Started with the cod salad that though each ingredient was excellent did not come together for me. When you get a bite of the parsley, radish, and cod at once the flavor of the dish comes together nicely. However, the amount of parsley makes this difficult to do and you wind up eating each ingredient almost individually leaving the flavor wanting and inconstant. Eating this salad seemed mostly like eating parsley. The Blood Sausage is innovative and flavorful interpretation but the serving is more a small plate yet priced in entree territory. The sides of Mash and Creamed spinach were also nice and complimented the Blood Sausage well. Service was perfect. Overall a good experience but for me only three stars given the pricing."
