The Class ActStill a hidden gem..For some reason, this continues to be one of the most well-kept secrets in the region! Class Act is an extension of the culinary arts/hospitality programs at Kirkwood College. As such, it is to some extent a "classroom" for students. Don't be fooled, however, the cuisine and service are not elementary. In fact, the depth of the food is vast; service is excellent. The ambiance is reminiscent of west coast restaurants. The food was excellent and the menu had a nice variety of entrees. The restaurant/hotel is very contemporary with a sleek minimalist feel. The service is terrific. We live in Tucson, Arizona and visit family in Iowa City every summer. We always like to have a dinner at Class Act. The service, ambiance, and food is always excellent. This restaurant can hold its own with many of the fine restaurants around the country. For a culinary school Class Act is exceptional.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMUpscale dining at reasonable pricesI enjoyed my lunch the other day at The Class Act restaurant, located inside Hotel Kirkwood. I love the upscale dining atmosphere where I feel like I am truly served cuisine, fancy presentation and all. The good news is that because the restaurant is used as a training ground for the community college's culinary arts students, prices are kept at bay. Bonus: a patio is available for outdoor dining in good weather.
As far as the food is concerned, I would say that out of my party of 3's entrees and desserts ( 5 dishes in all), there was only one that was slightly less than excellent. The server was friendly, and our lunch plates averaged about $12 per plate. They were able to put their manners to the test and try some new tastes and experiences. They were so excited to order a dessert! The server treated them like adults and they behaved as such. Beautiful salads, but very small, pricey. Harvest salad was advertised to have something from a creamery. Was told it wld be cream cheese:little squares. Cldn't imagine such on salad, but ordered anyway. Turned out to be Havarti-like. There were 3 of us, 2 w/bdays w/me as host. Manager offered me a comp dessert, but didn't tell the waiter. It is a bit on the pricey side for this area, so it may not be a good choice if you're bringing the kids or a larger group. The ambiance and the noise levels were very quiet and relaxed. Our server was very pleasant and friendly and was great about making suggestions. Chef Brittney came to our table and presented us with a Chef appetizer and checked on us during our meal to ensure our food was to our liking. Very professional and the personal touches to everything made the visit one to remember.
