We were celebrating some good news, and my husband loves to smoke a cigar, but on several occassions, the cigar bar service has been suspended when we arrive. I was told that it "should" be fine (which didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy), but sure enough, when we arrive, there was that disappointing sign on the door stating that cigar smoking was suspended. Had we known ahead of time, we could have chosen another night, or made a later dinner reservation. To be clear, my complaint is not with the staff in Grand Rapids. Harry heard about our disappointment, and his response was perfect.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Chop House by Main streetThe Chop House by Main street Ventures (Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Charleston W.Va.) the restaurants we have visited are great. The Grand Rapids location was no different, the service was impeccable the wine selection equal to any and better than most and the food was prepared to perfection. My wife had the Dover Sole and I had the NY Strip (Pittsburgh/MR) perfect. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess and escorted to our table, which I immediately declined. (A two large two top butted up against a wall) The manager Harry, asked what we would like and I told him a nice four top in the middle of the restaurant. He stated we would have to wait a half hour or so as they were busy. All went well! Tho it's pricey, the staff is top notch and the menue is amazing. If your in the area on business and looking for a wonderful place to eat, you won't be disappointed. The steaks were cooked to perfection though and melted in your mouth. The two hadn't been there before, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Once again, The Chop House did not disappoint. Everyone had a fillet mignon except me, who devoured the Cowboy - always amazing (do not overload on the sides - The Cowboy's the thing, don't spoil it with anything else). Although, the side order of mushrooms was excellent and not filling. A wonderful Chateau Montelena Cab was superb and an excellent complement to the meal. It was our first visit, and we were not disappointed. The service was very friendly, prompt, and ready to answer any questions we had. The menu was explained to us in great detail after we revealed this was our first visit. I would say The Chop House is a great place to take some friends that are visiting from out of town, to impress. Great dining experience. Had reservations for a Wednesday night, didn't really need them as the restaurant was never more than half full. We arrived 15 minutes early and were seated right away. Menus are on pads, really cool that you can see pictures of what you are ordering. I had the grilled hearts of romaine salad and it was absolutely delicious. For my main course I had a steak and it was cooked perfectly and was incredibly tender. Best steak I've ever had, hands down. My date and I headed downstairs to the cigar lounge for dessert, a few [more] drinks and a cigar. Our server asked us before dinner if we would like reservations for the cigar lounge, the service really is top notch here.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMAAAA Dining ExperienceWe went to the Chop House for our wedding anniversary. The ambiance reminded us of Chicago. The waitress, Hanna, was a true gem. Smart, funny, informed, and lovely. The food was unique, even if it was just a side of Au Gratin potatoes. Each menu item seemed to have a special receipe that most diners have probably never been exposed to before. Large portions. Outstanding wine list with even better flavors. Relaxed dining, no rushing to get the next course on the table. However, I would caution avid steak connoisseurs to avoid anything except the Kobe steak. The restaurant was out of the Kobe so we decided to try the Cowboy Ribeye. This was a mistake as it was very tender but flavorless and bland. They graciously allowed us to return it for the lamb (excellent). We had been there before so we were prepared. After using a $100 gift certificate, our bill with tip was $400 for 4 people. You can cut this with no alcohol (we had 2 bottles of wine, no dessert (we ordered 3), and less sides (we had 4). We chose this place for a special occasion and do not dine there frequently.
