The Chestnut Grille is a casual dining room in an historic hotel setting, with an outside two-level patio for warm weather dining. The menu is presented on American Hardwood Chestnut, which has been reclaimed from the building.   • "Very pleasant outdoor patio seating by a fountain. Could make the ambiance a 5 by cleaning the algae from the fountain and actually running it. A "pressure washing" to remove the old oil stains would help also. This restaurant should management choose, easily could be a 5 instead of a 3 with about a days worth of work. It really could be a gem!"

  • "They had an interesting menu in the past with unusual presentations and combinations of flavors ( Romaine Tower, Chocolate Steak). No more (new chef?). Quite a bargain, though. Good trout special for 17.99 with salad and a side; the trout tasted fine, but was unseasoned and could have really used some fresh parsley or herbs, capers, salt, pepper, something to liven it up. I like the nod to the historical setting. The waiter was obviously a student without great training."

  • "The Chestnut Grille in the recently restored Green Park Inn was lovely and the service was goos, but there were few people there, so I don't know how it would be when busy. The food choices were limited but interesting. The food itself was presented attractively, and the entrees were steaming hot. However, the food itself was quite bland. The bread was plain white bread served cold with butter too cold to spread. The cherry tomatoes in the mixed green salad were hard and cold and impossible to spear with your fork. The chicken pies and black-eyed pea cakes were tasty enough but not delicious. The mashed potatoes were tasteless. The elegant old Victorian inn deserves food with more outstanding, distinctive flavors."

  • "It was my daughter's graduation dinner. There were 5 of us. They have us 3 rolls. We had to order more. They took our drink and food order. Our drinks came. Our tiny little salads came. 20 more minutes no food. 40 more minutes. No food. 60 minutes no food. 2 hours later no food. We left. We made multiple inquiries to no avail. Worst dining experience EVER! "

  • "We want the Green Park and Chestnut Grill to succeed. We are so thankful that the inn is being slowly brought back to life as it is a much needed return to mountain elegance in Blowing Rock. However, the restaurant needs attention. Recently we dined on a Sunday and ordered the advertised Green Plate Special. The meatloaf was bland and served less than warm. The accompanying veggies, mashed potatoes and steamed spinach, tasted ok but were served cold. The accompanying salad was wilted and served with watery dressings. Our waiter, while he tried, was obviously not trained well for his work. The Sunday evening music events are the perfect vehicle to build support for the restaurant. Sadly, the CG is missing a wonderful opportunity."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Chestnut. it was a cold winter evening, and unfortunately the restaurant was basically empty. Nonetheless, we had a delightful meal. The bruschetta appetizer was fantastic - warm and with a wonderful cheesy taste on very crisp bread. Our server was very knowledgeable and steered us to great selections. My Caesar salad was superb. I had the New York strip, which was cooked to perfection. My wife had a wonderful chicken entrée with roasted carrots and red onions. Both were delicious. We topped off the evening with a chocolate mousse dessert and some chocolate and cherry ice cream. The mousse was great! The chef here has a wonderful menu, and it needs more community support. Great restaurant!"

  • "We went of a very cold foggy night and were the only diners. Crispy Fish and Chips were very good, crispy and tasty. The Peppercorn NY Strip Steak was excellently prepared but a little chewy. Accompanying Onion Rings were excellent. The layered vegetable lasagna was good and made for a very filling meal. Would try them again on a busier night when the kitchen is in their groove."

  • "The Chestnut Grille is tucked away inside of the beautifully restored Green Park Inn. To get to the restaurant, you have to see the Inn---so you get a double treat. Both are wonderful. Great chef and excellent wait staff. These folks do "dining" right. Quiet, romantic and historical setting."

  • "I really wanted to like this restaurant. . .Love the old dining room and history of the place BUT it did not live up to any of the positive reviews I read. Maybe the award winning chef was off Friday night, but it was one of the busiest weekends in the High Country and even so, the dining room was maybe a little over half full during prime dining hours. So being hugely busy was not an excuse. I ordered the salmon medium rare. It was overcooked but worse than that, it tasted "off." I had my friend try a bite and she agreed. We notified the waiter and ordered something else which came fairly quickly. My friends had pulled pork and the steak--steak was "tough" and the pork was average. Too much competition out there doing a much better job. ."

  • "I found Chef James again. I am ecstatic to have founfd where Chef has brought his culinary expertise. I had the signature chocolate steak and it brought me back to the days when he was at Crippens. Same delicious taste, in a new location. He has expanded the menu and has a wide variety of choices. Two in our party broke our no mountain seafood rule and ordered the seared tuna. It was perfect. My wife didnt want me to post because she is worried we will have a harder time getting reservations. I'm taking the chance because these guys deserve all the accolades they recieve."

  • "We enjoyed the food at Chestnut Grille very much. I have never had a better restaurant pork chop...ever! My wife loved her trout. The bread and spread was a good start, the salad and dressing was very good, and the main course absolutely delightful. The dining room is well managed with plenty of service staff, but it appears some are a bit "new at this..." Our wine was a slight disappointment...for several reasons, but overall an adequate glass. We had a prime seat; it was quiet in a busy dining room...one of those islands of calm. The dining room is at the same time dark (wood) and too bright (lighting glares a bit)...but the total effect is a very nice place to have a dinner for two or for a larger group. Moderate $$ and good value"

  • "We had 6 people and that ordered a variety of offerings ranging from salmon to pork chops. Each entree was fresh with flavorful sauces and nice side items. The shrimp cake appetizer was also excellent. There was live piano music that was very enjoyable. Service was excellent. The ambience was somewhat formal, but were dressed fairly casually and we felt comfortable."

  • "The inn is historic and the owners have tried to keep it authentic - this results in a rather dark, but pleasant, dining room. Could lose the dark red paint, though. The Front Porch Cabernet is a deal at $5 a glass. We began with the lump crab stuffed squash blossoms which were dynamite. The Caesar salad was very good as well as the pecan crusted trout; my wife thought the sauce too sweet, though. The loser, therefore the moderate rating, was the fish and chips. WAY too much batter around thin filets of flounder."

  • "This was our 5th visit, and unfortunately, each has been more and more disappointing. Our first visit about a year ago was the best, with great food and service, but each subsequent dinner has been less and less enjoyable to the point of no return. On this occasion, our wait person knew little about the menu and was obviously very inexperienced in general. The manager who attempted to assist with wine selection wasn't helpful either. The entrees were very disappointing both in quality and quantity. The "Chef's Own" chicken pie had an excellent crust, but little else. The other entrees, including a special for the evening, were equally unappetizing. This is very sad because the hotel has tremendous atmosphere and potential."

  • "The menu has been revised and the restaurant is much less "fancy" than last year. Food is very good with reasonably priced items. They do have some "fancy" specials, but they are pricey. The regular menu is great. This is a very historic place and it needs to succeed! Try it and I think you will go back and it may become one of your "regular" spots in BR."

Although the restaurant was less than half occupied and with ample wait staff the service was slow and unimpressive. Also, the restaurant appeared "tired" and outdated."

  • "Our second visit to CG provided excellent food once again. However, the wait staff continues to need seasoning. We had guests who both enjoyed the steak, saying flavor and preparation were both excellent. I had the chicken with bruschetta, and my husband ordered the pork chop. Both were delicious with grilled asparagus. The waitstaff is friendly, but they confused the orders and served soups and salads in an odd sequence. Continued training will improve the service, and Sharon (the manager) seems to be on top of the development of her staff. The breads are delicious with different kinds arriving with a bean spread. I suggest offering butter along with the breads for those patrons who do no care for a hummus type accompaniment."

  • "Our first visit to CG was good. The food was excellent~oriechetti with beef, trout, and pork chops~ and presented well. The breads were delicious with a wonderful spread included. While the wait staff is somewhat inexperienced, they will get to the level expected at a restaurant of this quality. The manager is friendly and checked on our table frequently. She is an asset. The restaurant is a much needed addition to the list of eateries in Blowing Rock. It is well on its way to being a favorite as we live in the area. We will return and have already booked reservations for a second visit."

  • "The hostess invited us to enjoy the outdoor terrace, but a walk thru the dining area revealed a comfortable setting which we look forward to on another visit. The wait staff was great, with the right combination of attention and friendly advice regarding menu and drink selections. Our party of four sampled two different appetizers which were large enough to easily share among us. We each chose different entree's including one of the evening's specials. Our bar drinks and wine selections were quite good and enjoyed with an assortment of 3 different breads. All entree's were well presented and absolutely wonderful! Delicious desserts completed the meal perfectly, and we are now excited to have a great new restaurant in Blowing Rock!"

  • "The restaurant is in the historic Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock. I ordered the mushroom soup and Caesar salad, both of which were outstanding. I really enjoyed my seared tuna with an Asian influence, but our friend had the best entree of the evening---pecan crusted trout. Most of the diners were on the main floor. We requested a half-level up, which gave us more privacy. Overall, our meal, service and evening as a whole were superb. (BTY, Marilyn Monroe, Henry Fonda, Henry Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt have been guest at the Inn.)"

  • "Overall not impressed. Food was average at best. We were told they were having a special on the appletinis for $5 but they charged us $10! When I called I mentioned that my wife was celebrating a birthday, and do you do anything special? The woman on the phone said she could get a dessert. I assumed that was for free, however they charged for that too. They did not have a drink menu, nor a very basic alcohol that I ordered, or even a blender. Not a well stocked bar! Salmon was overcooked, and the lamb special was NOT special. No need to venture back to The Chestnut Grille, and we are sharing our views with our friends."
