  • "Two of us on a Friday evening, arriving about 6 and telling the waiter we needed to leave by 7:15 (we did). Ordered entrees and a glass of wine on tap ($7:00). Food was good; however the waiter we had needs more training. When he brought our wine, he assured us he would "grab" our bread. We never saw him again until he appeared with the bread when we'd almost finished our meal. We had asked the waitress who brought our food to bring us bread -- she had said she would but did not. During the meal I saw our waiter a few times could not catch his eye. Each time I spotted him he seemed to be in conversation with those at other tables. We were out of luck as far as any attention from him."

  • "After a nice visit one night to the bar where we received extra special attention from the bartender (there were only a few customers), we decided to try dinner on Friday night. Major disappointment. The food was so-so, the service that was awful. The only thing redeeming were the cocktails. It's a shame because the location is nice, they could do so much better if they hired actual waiters with some experience. We had 4 waiters & none seemed to know anything. Sweet potato fries were big planks of undercooked potatoes. When I complained the waiter said, "oh yeah… another table said the same thing earlier tonight". Shouldn't that be a clue to tell the chef to stop serving them that way? We won't be back for dinner."

  • "My wife and I went to the Chesapeake for Resturant Week. Both of had the rock fish entree. The fish was prepared perfectly; succulent flesh, crisp skin, and an unabtrusive caper sauce. The broccoli rabe and black eye pea accompaniments provided a great flavor/texture contrast. The bannana bread pudding was hard and lacking in flavor and could not be saved by the chocolate chip butterscotch sauce. Fortunately, the dessert did not ruin the fabulous fish."

  • "The Chesapeake Restaurant has reopened after 20 plus years and is the same as the original restaurant in name only. The food, service and ambiance is the total opposite of the original! The waiter was not knowledgeable nor experienced - when asked if the restaurant participated in Restaurant Week, he answered that he didn't think so. On leaving, we saw the Restaurant Week Menu for the restaurant sitting on the bar. When we asked where the crab meat for crab cakes came from, he answered, "Maryland." We asked him to check, and he reported back that the crab meat was from Virginia. The crab cakes had a good flavor, were broiled rather than fried, and were burnt on the bottom. We won't be returning to the "new" Chesapeake."

  • "The interior of this restaurant is very well-done! This place is perfect for sitting at the bar, drinking one of the many interesting cocktails, and eating clams and oysters. Beyond that though, more work is needed. First, dine on the bar side, not in the dark, "private" dining room, which really should simply be used for overflow because there is nothing appealing about it. Next, the appetizers and entries were uneven; some things very good, some just ok. HOW can they ruin mussels? By overcooking, that's how. But, we had an amazing carrot soup and a fine piece of chicken. Hopefully this place will keeping improving. Until then, select carefully and enjoy the ambience!"

  • "The food was cooked well but had NO seasoning. None. It also took waaaaaaay too long. Our service was pretty good but was definitely left languishing by the kitchen's turtle-like pace. Additionally, they brought some band in to play which would have been fine but the speakers/amps were turned up too loud for the relatively intimate space. On top of all that, some woman was trying to get the whole restaurant to play some game to win a prize of lotions. It felt very intrusive and really ruined the atmosphere. I really want to like this place. I keep hoping it'll get better. But it just seems to be regressing, so badly that I'm likely to give up."

  • "Chesapeake serves many purposes and I'm glad it's back. Menu is eclectic, a little pricey for the neighborhood, but there were options for a less expensive evening. Although the bar scene was energetic, there were couples secluded in plush booths and dining by the windows, taking in the beautiful nighttime view. While it may not sound it, overlooking Penn Station provides a dramatic backdrop. Food was good. We had crab cakes, rockfish, strip steaks, and notably, raw oysters, which were the stars of the meal. Quintessential Baltimore establishment. Thanks to server, Chris, our meal was presented, in order and in time and we made our movie at the Charles. Great night! Thanks, Chesapeake."

  • "I organized a birthday dinner for my husband at The Chesapeake for 9 people. The food was consistently good, but the service was terrible. We were offered bread three times and didn't receive it until nearly an hour after the reservation. The server didn't seem interested in taking orders at all, and in fact did not provide half the guests with menus. Every course took an incredible amount of time - even dessert, which really shouldn't take long to prepare. The meal took over 4 hours in total, and although we received two complimentary appetizers for the inconvenience, the server didn't seem to grasp that the meal was not going well. When the check came, there was a 20% tip added. We will not return to this restaurant, with any size party."

  • "Unfortunately, the menu is awful, the food was mediocre, and our server disappeared for most of our meal (she was very nice, but obviously overworked). We had to grab other servers to help us. There were 3 of us. We finally asked another server to get us some bread as we were waiting so long--she brought 2 rolls for 3 people! The restaurant was crowded but understaffed on a Saturday night (and it was early). The location is so perfect next to the movie theatre, so a great place to go after a movie. But, what a waste of a location. Doubt if this restaurant will be there for long unless there is a drastic improvement!"

  • "It's not awful and it's convenient after a movie at the Charles, but it could be so much better. The cream of crab soup contained a few skimpy pieces of crab, and was mostly cream. The vegetarian plate's beauty was marred by oversalting. The setting is lovely. I wish the food was better."

  • "Made this reservation for lunch. Walked in the restaurant and waited for 10 mins for a hostess or someone to come seat us. There was no sign that indicated we should away ourselves so we waited. We eventually decided to leave. I love visiting new restaurants so I was disappointed that the never got to taste the food there. Please do better with service."

  • "Everyone was very friendly when we arrived and left. The waitress was somewhat inexperienced, unfamiliar with the bar & the menu. She'll be fine with more experience. The food was good, but the value was not. The cost was a little less than $45/person + tip (at least 2 of us didn't have any drinks, we had no desserts, and 4 of the 5 of us ordered soup or salad - not included). I was still hungry when we left, and I had had snacks at the movie before we went to the restaurant. For someone who is impressed with trendy places, and who equate cost with good dining, then this would be the place for you."

  • "Very unimpressive service and food. Our waiter was friendly but just terrible in every other way. Just slow and not efficient. The food was not great. The cheese plate was terrible. The cheese were hardly "artisanal," simple feta, blue cheese and a shaved Parmesan. The "accompaniments" was a couple dots of jelly....just bad. Our entrees were okay but I would stay they were good. The best part were the veggies. However, the scallops stated broccoli and cauliflower, which we didn't get. The scallops were more done than I would have liked. I thought the seating and decor were nice."

  • "Gave this restaurant as a try on a Friday night before catching a movie next door. It took several minutes to be seated, despite no line and the restaurant not being busy -- no one could find the host, yet several other people came to tell us they couldn't find the host. Initial water and then drink service took a long time. Only ordered apps, and then after more slow service while the staff was just hanging about, decided it wasn't worth it for dinner. Don't waste your money."

  • "I was not overly impressed with Chesapeake, and appparently others have not been either: the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived for dinner at 6:30. The bartender served as our waitress as well: during the course of our service, she: spilled some of my drink on her foot and did not offer to replenish the glass: swore in front of us, and made a mistake on our order. The food was fine but not memorable for the prices: I would choose to return to other restaurants much more readily."

  • "The prix fixe Thanksgiving menu was excellent. I'm considering going there next year for the holiday if they offer it again. The service was great, the music (motown style) was right for the scene. A fantastic dining experience!"

  • "Seated in a quiet, nondescript back room, despite the fact that there was plenty of space in the much more attractive main dining hall. Expensive cocktails were disappointing. We had oysters on the half shell, which were tasty, if inexpertly shucked. A $15 charcuterie plate was small and lacked imagination. It came with some tasty croutons, but alas there were only three of them on the plate for out party of 4. Main course was lackluster, with two NY strips that came nicely seared but under-seasoned, and were served with a plate full of under-steamed vegetables. These steaks were not accompanied by steak knives. Shrimp & grits were adequate, but not special. Lacks polish and professionalism, and the food is basically terrible."

  • "Twice before I had been to The Chesapeake Restaurant and had an exceptional meal with excellent service. Where exactly did that place go? After being seated we quickly realized that there was no cocktail menu and the food menu was abbreviated.When it came to ordering apps, I had enjoyed the charcuterie in the past so I put in an order.We were brought a paltry plate of meats that included mortadella that tasted like cafeteria lunch meat, an odd dollop of chopped roast beef and two other petite piles of unrecognizable animal proteins.Entrees included: shrimp and grits w/ an odd smokey spaghetti sauce; rockfish w/ scales and little flavor;nearly raw cruciferous veg, crudely plunked, framed our plates.Server did not check in on us throughout."

  • "i've been here twice for dinner. the food is very good. the staff is friendly but the service is very slow. Both times I've been there the restaurant was not busy at all, however our food took an especially long time. Appetizers took at least 25 minutes before they arrived. the main courses arrived finally but seemed to be under a heat lamp. The food was good both times . I really hope they can get their act together . I am rooting for them to make it. But they need better trained wait staff and better coordination with the kitchen."

  • "When we arrived, we were greeted and quickly sat, so I thought things were off to a good start. But when we sat at our table for at 10 minutes before we had to flag someone down, I started to worry. My husband ordered an old fashioned, but what he got was basically a whiskey and water. We ordered a cheese plate as an appetizer and at most restaurants when the cheeses aren't listed on the menu, the server will explain each type. However, the plate was served by a food runner and as quickly as the plate was placed in front of us, the runner was off to another table. By that point it was apparent to us that the staff wasn't interested in providing guests with a great dining experience, they just wanted you to order and leave them alone."

  • "Although the menu seemed limited, the food and service were very good. I would not go again nor recommend this to a friend because of the disturbing level of noise. As we were there early, before a show, it was not that crowded and we were not sitting in the bar area. And yet, we had to yell at each other across the table in order to be heard. I am usually the last one to comment on noise level as I have the ability to block out extraneous noise, but I found this intolerable and was happy to leave. It's a shame . . ."

  • "I was really looking forward to this restaurant. Went after a movie at the Charles. Energetic vibe, and once the waitress got to our table she was great. But we sat for quite a long time (with a reservation!) before anyone came to the table. I found the decor a bit spare and not at all warm (which is what I had convinced myself I would find). Food was fine--brussels sprouts were great, actually. Scallops were good. Shrimp & grits disappointing. There are too many wonderful options in Baltimore to keep this one on the list."

  • "Although the food was good, the service was a bit questionable and lacking. Our server was quite nice. However, we were told by her that there was no bread because the recipe used was "too salty". Also, ice cream wasn't available for dessert since the "freezer exploded". Nonetheless, the meal was quite tasty. The restaurant should do quite well once some of the kinks are worked out. Also their bar was a bit sparse with no specific "bar menu" offered."

  • "It was an 8pm dinner and they ran out of 2 menu items. Our food didn't come out at the same time (20 min) difference. They came back twice to tell us a menu item that had been ordered was no longer available. The did was decent but didn't command the high price. Servers were very inexperienced and kitchen was too. It has potential. They just need to hire a new leadership team and retrain."

My scallopls were good scallops but were gritty which I find unforgivable because it totally ruins my dining experience. My friend enjoyed the scallops. The house wine was harsh. Two of our party enjoyed the ambience and the view of the Union Station."

  • "The entire staff apparently had changed hands the week prior. They were out of cava and prosecco. Beet salad was odd, nothing other than a variety of beets lined up on a plate, scallops were tough and gritty, vegetables were cold. Quite a disappointment. I was really hoping for more."

  • "We've been to The Chesapeake two times before our most recent trip and were delighted with the service and quality of food. This past trip, however, left me frustrated. After being promptly seated by a lovely hostess we, and several other tables around us, weren't visited by wait staff for a full 20 minutes. We were told by a waitress we would be served "in a minute" and left for an additional 10 before a waiter who was clearly taking on too many responsibilities asked us for our drink order and apologized for the wait. He had to go behind the bar to make our drinks and kept running to the kitchen to ask where our food was. We waited an additional hour for the food while the manager never once asked how things were. The food was very good."

Who ever owns this restaurant needs to train the staff and pay attention to what goes on at the restaurant. I do not recommend the Chesapeake and will not be back."

  • "We came here about a month ago and had a great meal. Now it seems they have lost their chef. The ricotta app was bland. Ceasar salad so standard. The Maryland chicken was a half chicken last time, delicious. This time just a breast cut in half. The cheese tray came without anything to eat the cheese on. It was a weird experience considering our first experience. Too bad. Will not return unless i read they have gotten another chef."

  • "In my book, the overall rating cannot exceed that of the food. I had the monkfish, which had very little flavor...nothing wrong, but not much to talk about. Also, the menu is short. So the Chesapeake isn't a dinner destination ("Let's go downtown to the Chesapeake tonight, dear.") but rather is a convenient place to grab a bite if you're already in the neighborhood for another reason, such as a movie at the Charles or a play at the Single Carrot. Of course, the Chesapeake has to compete with Tapas Teatro and will never be more than a runner-up. I appreciate that the Chesapeake tries to us locally sourced ingredients for their meals, but my dinner just wasn't worth going back for, and many of the items on the menu can be had anywhere."

  • "I want this restaurant to succeed because the area really needs a fine restaurant. I love the new look, the ambience is really nice, the service was excellent, but the food was disappointing. I am not sure how to say it - the dishes sound interesting - but somehow they just seem to miss the mark. As this was our second visit and we both tried new entrees, I am afraid it is what it is. So disappointed."
