  • "We went on the first day of Summerlicious, July 4th. It must have been the first day of the new school term as well. The food was actually quite decent but the service was sorely lacking. Our waiter was a new student who couldn't speak and understand English - let alone understand dining protocols. He could not explain the menu and he did not know the daily soup. We had trouble explaining that we wanted to know what the soup was so we would know whether to order it. We had to signal the manager that we were not provided with cutlery for dessert. Lastly, we were charged for the prix-fix lunch instead of dinner price. Well, at least they tried - and so did we."

  • "First, the food was amazing. From appetizer to dessert, everything was prepared to perfection. The pork belly was "to die for". However, the service was not so good. While I understand the servers are GBC hospitality students, I think they can do a better job by studying the menu before service. It is not very professional to read the menu off a crumpled piece of paper, and our server showed that she doesn't know the menu too well. Also the service was quite slow despite there were only a handful of tables filled. She also missed one of the appetizers and gave the wrong dessert to the birthday boy. While she did apologize, it really did not end our lunch on a high note."

  • "Our waitress was not familiar with the menu at all! For example, She didn't tell us about the Soup of the day & when she did...English is her 3rd language because she told us it was Green Bean purée when in fact it was green pea! When she brought my soup, I had to ask for a spoon to eat it with! Salad forks were given to us to eat our main entree. Absolutely no knowledge about the appetizers, mains, 3 desserts or 3 wines on the menu! Our waitress was so bad that it makes us wonder about the standards of George Brown. The teacher supervising the students couldn't care less!"

  • "The food was exceptional. We had the seared sea bream and the maple glazed pork. Very good. The service needs some help. The wait staff seemed unsure of what to do, we ordered the 4-course meal and only got 3 courses, our water cups were only filled about 2 inches each time, and they forgot to ask if we wanted more bread, but they asked the table next to us. Overall, it will be the food that will get us back here, not the service."

  • "We live a block away and go to Chef's House often. It's been a good place to take house guests --- interesting operation and really good food. Until this last visit. The food simply wasn't up to the quality of previous visits. For example, the goat cheese souffle was dense and heavy - not what we expected in a souffle. The fish - sea bream - was good, but the "skin" was overly salty. And the dessert - a cardamom something - was completely tasteless. It all felt kind of mass produced and unsubtle. We were disappointed."

  • "The waiter came back 6 tiimes to discussed the order . After waiting nearly 1.5 hours we asked about our food was and found out that they thought we wanted it all packed up! This was incorrect. We had to ask for bread and the water was only topped up once in the hours we were waiting and we ended up taking the food home . We ate at home and found the portions sizes to be much less than the plates coming out of the kitchen to others who got to eat at the resteraunt. I don't think we got either entres but rather four appatizers in the end.We did only pay for one meal and our drinks but at $ 70 dollars for the little bit of food we got, is was a very POOR and EXPENSIVE experience!"

  • "This was my fourth visit to The Chefs' House in the last year or so and I've never been disappointed. The students' enthusiasm and the managers' care and attention to detail is commendable. Our party of four had the goat cheese soufflé and salmon appetizers. Both were delicious and nicely presented. The sea bream main was crispy and very flavourful. The pad Thai was spicy and had a number of good-sized shrimp. Our desserts were the rhubarb parcel, cardamom custard eclair and hazelnut semi-freddo. All were beautifully presented. The cardamom could have been stronger, it was quite subtle but still very good overall. The wait staff are very accommodating and listen carefully to the diners. The managers check to ensure all is going well. "

  • "This is the first time at this location. I dined in the George Brown school restaurant (old location). This new location is great. Its nice to see the various TV's and the food presentation. Perhaps it was my choice of ordering a sandwich but next time I will order another dish where I truly can enjoy "gourmet cooking". I will definately come back and pick something else from the menu."

  • "We went to the restaurant with lower expectations bc it is a chef school. However, I've never been served by a more inept waiter in my life. She did not know what was on the menu and didn't write orders down correctly. Once you ordered you didn't get the food although others at table did... and had to repeatedly ask if you were getting your meal. Ordering a bottle of wine was a task in itself and somehow after confirming what bottle we wanted twice, the waiter still came back asking more questions relating to a completely different bottle. Honestly, I do NOT recommend coming to this restaurant. Food was mediocre and surprisingly bad value. $30 for the set menu is a more reasonable price point. Especially when service ruins your experience."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 20th year anniversary dinner here last Friday night. We brought our kids and were not sure what to expect, except the concept seemed fun and so we took a chance. We were very pleased with everything. The ambiance is great, the service was very friendly, and the food was very, very good! In fact, the experience has inspired my son (who is just graduating this year) to consider pursuing the culinary arts :) We had a wonderful time - congratulations, this is a beautiful little restaurant that we will be happy to frequent again. Thanks so much! PS - I told everyone I spoke with about our experience and highly recommended your restaurant - I'm sure quite a few of our friends will go :)"

  • "It was a quiet evening, for my friends and I, at The Chefs' House after about a year's absence. I was not disappointed. From the breezy, fun watermelon cocktail to the yummy in-house smoked salmon appetizer followed by the tasty pork medallions on spinach spaetzle and finished with a coffee and rhubarb parcel sidled with vanilla ice cream everything was delicious to eat and visually pleasing. It was a pleasant stress-free dining experience with fine food. "The Chefs' House" is a gem right in my neighbourhood that I should take advantage more often."

Sea bream and dessert were delicious. The soufflé with mushrooms was too cold and too bland for my taste. Overall an excellent meal with outstanding service. Highly recommended."

  • "We chose The Chefs' House as the restaurant where we wanted to celebrate our 38th anniversary. We had a delightful evening and wonderful food. It was our charming waitresses first night serving tables and she did a great job. The restaurant staff made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. Our meals were outstanding, well prepared and beautifully served. It is so delightful being waited upon by students eager to learn the hospitality/restaurant business.   • "One of the things I love about dining at The Chef's House is that each and every experience is uniquely different but always spectacular. The food is always superb - creative, tasty, artistic - the list of adjectives I could use is endless. I think though that my favourite part is the energy of the students who take ownership over the restaurant. They may not always be polished but they are genuine, energetic and deeply committed to the path that they have taken. I will never stop tiring of dining at The Chef's House as it is always a unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience."

  • "Our evening's menu offered creative, inspired choices and when our dishes arrived, they were as delicious as anything we might have enjoyed at a downtown Toronto restaurant, and at better value. However, our service on this evening was worse than lack-lustre. Our server was unfamiliar with the menu's choices, nor did he seem to understand how ordering three or four of the choices worked. We ordered wine, but were not later offered a chance to order another. (This is where a restaurant makes money, after all). At no point did he engage us in friendly talk, even when we had long, long pauses between our courses. Some script for friendly enquiries as to how we enjoyed our dishes, for example, would have been much appreciated."

  • "My wife enjoyed the three courses of her meal. I enjoyed two of the courses, starter and desert. The main course I chose was Lamb Biryani.I had to send it back as it came cold. When re-served it was very bland and tasteless. I would not order it again. The time between courses seemed a bit long which probably accounts for the lamb biryani being cold."

  • "I had high expectations for the restaurant but was sadly disappointed. One of the pasta dishes was a little undercooked. When asked what the appetizer consisted of, the waiter wasn't able to respond. The main dish was a bit salty. Given what we had, the meal is overpriced ($41 for three courses and 47 for 4 courses). For comparison, I would advise checking out the Niagara Culinary Institute - Benchmark restaurant...great food (full of flavour) and reasonably priced (with wine pairing suggested by the students)!"

  • "I went with three friends for dinner on a Friday evening. We all enjoyed our meal and the time we spent at The Chef's House . The food was very good and our waiter David was exceptional. This is the second time that I had eaten here but was the first time for my friends. I do not hesitate to let others know about this unique restaurant."

  • "Loved the restaurant lay out. The TV screens were a touch of brilliance ! Very effective & unique. Service was okay, the waitress should not have asked 10 times or so " you guys okay ? " However this young lady was very attentive and pleasant. Everyone seemed very nervous which made us uncomfortable. The kitchen service was very slow in spite of not having much of a crowd. The food was well below average. At times cold ( the soup ) which tasted great. Entrees very disappointing not much taste offered, plating excellent. The complimentary rabbit mousse we should have passed on although beautifully presented. Dessert took for ever, not worth the wait. Q water is excellent not the cost. Management must be stepped up students deserve better."

  • "Maybe it is because you walk in there with high expectation but the reality is that this restaurant is OK. I went to dinner with a friend that was curious to try the Chef's House. Food was OK, service a bit rushed - the waiter had to go and was rushing us to order and pay. Overall it does not deliver to expectations. Being a school you would expect higher standards for the students. It can be tried once out of curiosity -the marketing is pretty good - but not worth a second visit unless the quality dramatically improves. Overall it is a bit overpriced."

  • "The food was average . I ordered the Trout but was surprised that the fillet was not deboned well , I've had over 30 pin bones that I had to remove . The other entree like the lamb biryani was luckluster. A 5 dollar biryani in a hole in a wall tasted better. The desserts however saved this dining experience . I ordered the plum upsides own cake with ice cream . It was perfect. The ice cream was smooth and creamy contrasted with the crispy and warm upside down cake with the sweet plum was a delight. I wish I could have ordered it alone ."

  • "As a former George Brown student who had to work in the restaurant as part of my program, I was wanting to return tremendously to see what was going on the The Chefs' House because the menu is always changing. It was great to see students from my program currently working dinner service that evening. The restaurant has at some interior decor change, but the food is still equally as delicious! Take warning if choosing to do the four-course menu, because the portions are FILLING! As this is a learning environment, patience is a must with the service staff because they are all present students - some are from other countries and have a varying range of restaurant experience."

  • "I brought my husband here for Valentine's Day and the meal was wonderful. This was not our first visit and it was a great reason to return. It's not just the food but the ambiance as well. You can see the interest and dedication of the student/staff, as ours said to us, this is a class and they want to do well and understand what makes good service. I appreciated the teacher/chef asking us about what really stood out for us - it was good to see that amount of care they take in what they are teaching. It's not often you can enjoy such wonderfood and see the next generation developing. Makes you feel good."

  • "Three of us dined at the Chef's House for Winterlicious and our three meals were all very good. Beef and chicken were cooked perfectly, as was the fish, and all were presented artfully. Staff are energetic, friendly and abundant in numbers! As a training restaurant for George Brown College, this is a fun and delicious experience at a reasonable price. What is great is the enthusiasm and obvious joy of the students who have chosen to go into this profession."

One piece of constructive criticism -- Carrying plates was an issue - both serving and clearing. Nothing that a bit of practise and confidence won't fix though. I wish the students all the best with their school courses. Cheers!"
