I did have to ask for the tasting menu I didn't realize it is for those on the mailing list only. I really like the tasting menu as otherwise one eats too much. A 6 ounce piece of meat is more than enough for one person.
My gripe is that I saw three people in jeans ( one in torn jeans), does anyone read and follow the dress code policy? We had a 6:00 pm reservation so I should expect a relaxed dress code early in the evening. This just happens to be one of my many gripes about Orange County, too casual.

Decor needs to be refurbished a bit while maintaining that "cellar" feeling and service staff could have been a little more professional for this level of restaurant. Every part of the meal exceeded both of our expectations. The service was excellent, each course of food was delicious from start to finish and there were plenty of great selections on the wine list from ordering by the glass to the bottle. We split the Chateaubriand for two, along with a side of their macaroni & cheese. She had the French onion soup, which she says is the best she's ever had, anywhere. I had the spinach salad, again, excellent. I would highly recommend The Cellar to anyone. So I gathered up a group of girls and we had an incredible meal together in the most secluded area of the restaurant. It was like we had our own private staff!! Food from all that attended was very good to excellent, as was the desert.
When making reservations for 4-6 people ask for the "back" table that affords a more private dinner.
Would I recommend The Cellar to friends... Their menu has something for everyone. If you like Chateaubriand, you will love their cut (the great thing is you can actually order it for One or Two) which is brought out table side and carved. No short servings and cooked to perfection. Best Short ribs and Lobster Bisque I have ever eaten, period. Wonderful place for romantic dinner or a casual meal. No dress code but you won't want to wear hobo attire, casually elegant +. Outstanding meal and service, wonderful ambiance. AND they have a $25 PER PERSON price fix menu for May that is off the hook. My wife had the Lobster Bisque (award winning) who says she expected more lobster flavor and bits of lobster in it. I then had the braised short ribs which was again very flavorful but the portion size left me wanting. Fortunately my wife ordered the special surf and turf which was a thick chunk of filet with 3 giant scallops and she generously shared. The chocolate soufflé was spot on.
I do want to make a note about our service. It may be specific to our waiter, but we were not offered bread, and there was no mention of the special tasting menu. Mysterious location makes for a romantic adventure. The food & service was top notch. Presentation was excellent. We sat in the smaller dining area near the bar. The intimate space does allow for you to overhear conversations at the next table, but that's only bad if the conversation is pure drivel, which in our case, was a bit distracting. But that's not the restaurants fault. If you are seeking privacy, you'll need to request one of the booths in the back.
