A word from The Cecil
The Cecil, created by New York businessman Richard Parsons and noted restaurateur and chef Alexander Smalls, is New York City’s first Afro-Asian-American brasserie.

Inspired by the travels, exploration and study of the African Diaspora of Chef Smalls, The Cecil will offer a global adventure in tastes and flavors as diverse and dynamic as the community in which the restaurant resides. Its goal is to connect communities through food, comfort and hospitality.

  • "Went here for a birthday during restaurant week and everything was prepared with perfection, the flavors were so interesting and there was something for everyone (3 of us). Drinks were fantastic plus offers of wine and beer were great. Our server was very friendly, helpful and attentive. Only complaint was the noise level - could barely talk due to to noisiness, in addition we were next to a large loud group of 12. The owner came to check in at the tables. Great experience! Highly recommend! I can't imagine there is a bad dish in this place. P.S. our group was from California with plenty of experience between the 3 of us eating and cooking in southern US (New Orleans, Carolinas), Los Angeles and San Francisco/Oakland."

  • "Very interesting menu. Lovely ambience. Food is very good although chef did have a slightly heavy hand on the salt. Acoustics we horrible. Very noisy -- we were a table of 3 and had to yell at eachother to be heard. Service was very slow. From pouring our water to taking our order to getting our food out to getting the check. It was as though our table did not exist. Would give it another chance though."

  • "My wife and I went for dinner here last Tuesday to celebrate our anniversary. She had been at the Cecil before and was very enthusiastic. She was right about most things. The service was great, the ambience lively (though very loud), and my entree (Gumba) and her two starters were great. Drinks and suggestions for wine were also very good. However, the much anticipated ox-tail noodles were not good (someone must have dropped a bottle of curry in there) and according to my wife completely different from last time she had them. In addition, the dessert (Malva cake) was also not good. I am very sorry to say that this was probably the worst dessert I ever had. Maybe we were simply not lucky as it was restaurant week and the kitchen was busy?"

  • "I was at Cecil twice in a weekend. That should tell you how good the food is. Friday night I had collard green salad and shared, oxtail dumplings, okra fries and some type of egg roll. The table also shared mac and cheese ( it has bacon in it.. yum) and a udon noodle and meat dish. Had Brunch sunday.. totally different menu. Must have the bread basket. Duck confit and waffles nice twist on classic."

  • "The stop at The Cecil was the start of a great weekend in New York. My party of four didn't recognize a thing on the menu which made it Foodie Heaven. We all had different meals and four clean plates. Our affable sever guided us through excellent recommendations. Her joyful personality added to our festivities. We all had heard of Monkey Bread but only one previously had it. We will all come back again just to start with it. Wish I lived in the Neighborhood, I'd be a regular."

  • "The combination of flavor choices and possibilities of mixing of entrees or numerous appetizers makes for a very rewarding meal. Oh but the noise is deafening. We were a party of two and thankfully were able to move to the same side of the table. Most people were leaning over their tables and shouting to communicate over the noise - not music, just poor acoustics. I'm sure it's correctable. Good luck to The Cecile, a nice Harlem destination."

  • "I brought my relatives from out of town here because they wanted food they could not get back at home, yet they also wanted oxtail. Mission accomplished!! We went for the brunch and enjoyed everything...however the 1st place winner in our vote was the caribbean toast, which is a creative rendition of french toast - YUM! We also tried the roti pizza, the squid crispy and the oxtail dumplings. Everything was really delicious! I noticed others had constructive criticisms or complaints in their reviews...well I decided to leave room for human error and gratefully there was no human error when I experienced it. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I am a native Harlemite, and received a recommendation to dine at The Cecil. Accompanied by a good friend and fellow foodie, the experience was one to be remembered. The decor is warm, inviting and not fussy. The space is open, and the noise level is great for dining. The Cecil introduced their summer menu. I had the collard green salad, which was tender, and the coconut dressing was a great accompaniment. My friend had the heirloom salad, which was delicious (loved the addition of fried lotus root). I chose the guinea hen for my entre, which was crunchy and well cooked. My friend had the yellow snapper, which was awesome. I am going back for the snapper, try the tuna and lamb dishes."

  • "This is the kind of place you want to recommend - great for the neighborhood, food is imaginative and tasty, elegant design and layout, friendly staff. But the operational aspect of the service - getting what you ordered within a reasonable time of placing the order - is awful. We had a waitress and a manager serving our table, which seemed to make them more, not less, confused. We were at the table for about 30 mins before we got a glass of water. We had to ask for bread three times. And we had to chase both the waitress and the manager for our entrees. At these prices, that's just unacceptable."

I must return this weekend for brunch and go back just to check out the bar scene. It is an elegant, trendy AND comfortable restaurant. Also the prices are reasonable and the staff are both welcoming and attentive -- and I will go back and soon."

  • "I was skeptical about The Cecil as the reviews seemed all over the place about the food. When the food came out, we were alarmed at the portion sizes which seemed tiny compared to our appetites! We were taken by delighted surprise that each dish was full of unique, unpredictable combinations of flavors and textures -- well balanced, and beautifully plated. The collard greens salad with coconut dressing was particularly delicious as were the beef suya and the pineapple fried rice. There was nothing that came to the table that I would not recommend! In the end, the food was rather rich and we could not even finish those seemingly tiny portions! My only complaint is that for such a beautiful place, it is way too noisy! But, that's New York!"

  • "I really wanted to like this place. We decided to check out the Saturday DJ Brunch and my review is mixed. Pluses: Great ambiance, 3+ star food (especially the okra fries) and a DJ spinning a great mix of World music and Classic soul and R&B. Minuses: The service was painfully slow (in a restaurant that wasn't packed) and I thought the drinks (especially for Harlem) were pricey. $15 for a Bloody Mary???!! I can't enthusiastically recommend this place. Maybe I'd advise someone to go for a drink and a few appetizers just to listen to the music."

  • "Not only did I love the atmosphere at the Cecil but I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner. As one who enjoys vegetarian cuisine, I was thrilled to see the Rice & Vegetable Wok bar option on the dinner menu. I selected the Chilli Tofu with Coconut Brown Rice and it was incredible! I highly recommend it. I also appreciated the variety of beers (I choose Tusker (Kenya) since I had not had it in years. I will definitely return. The service was awesome. Thank you!"

  • "My dad had been saying he wanted to visit this restaurant. I had been for dinner, but not for brunch and thought it would be a nice time to try for Father's Day. It was very busy, service was a little on the slower side, but the food was amazing. The collard green salad is unique and something that everyone should try once. I will certainly be back for dinner and brunch in the near future."

  • "I love trying new restaurants even when it means traveling to another borough (the horror! lol). After hearing rave reviews from co-workers and friends, I decided to make reservations with a group of friends. I was NOT disappointed. We shared the oxtail dumplings (loved them!) and for dinner, I ordered pineapple black fried rice with wok prawns and the piri piri sauce. The piri piri sauce is DELICIOUS! One friend had the Wagyu burger (which she was initially embarrassed to order because of the menu), but she was extremely happy with her choice. Another friend ordered the Feijoda and absolutely loved it. Another friend ordered the same thing that I did and her review is the same as mine. I would definitely go again to try something new!"

My stay was in Times Square, but I traveled to Harlem specifically for this restaurant due to the recommendation of a friend. I was not disappointed.   • "We've been there before and we really like the food. But the service this time was really bad. The drinks didn't come until the appetizer was served. Three of the four of us received our appetizers. We had to ask three people, and finally the manager to get the fourth appetizer. Our waitress basically disappeared at this point. To their credit they didn't charge us for the fourth appetizer. But the same thing happened with the main course, and we had to call for the manager again. "
