  • "My wife and I were in Pittsburgh over the weekend to see Don Quixote. We were a little pressed for time so decided to do a quick tasting menu. We had Doug as our waiter, who was excellent, and decided to go with every recommendation he gave. We had the crab and tomato bisque, the Carlton salad, and the Barramundi. Doug had the kitchen split every plate for us which made perfect servings for each of us. On top of all this we mentioned that we were going to the ballet and this prompted Doug to inform us that they offered a free limo service to the theatre and back. The experience was so great we almost went back again the next day. I would highly reccomend The Carlton for a special occasion or before a show at one of Pittsburgh's theaters."

  • "First time visiting the Carlton and I will certainly be back. I ordered the veal chop, my wife ordered a steak. Both meals were fantastic and cooked perfectly. The side dish vegetables were also very good, again prepared perfectly. For an appetizer we had some meatball thing, it was OK. I had the coconut creme for desert, which was good, but a little too heavy. I like a fluffier coconut creme. My wife had the banana creme, which was excellent. Our server, Jason, was awesome. I asked for his recommendation on a wine (I was looking for a pinot noir or merlot) and he recommended a pinot noir that was excellent. He was attentive, but not overly imposing and seemed to want to make sure our meals were perfect. We'll be back."

  • "Whenever I eat at The Carlton, I wonder why I don't go there more often. The food and service are always amazing. I suppose I tend to think of The Carlton as very expensive, but truly it's on par with any other fine dining restaurant you'd visit, especially since they have very reasonably priced wine selections. The Carlton also validates your parking and provides limo service to and from the shows in the Cultural District, which is fun. The chilean sea bass melts in your mouth and my husband ordered the venison stew last week - fabulous."

  • "I've loved the Carlton for years. I recall thinking it was the best restaurant in PGH, back when it opened. I was not thrilled with the seating and had to ask to sit elsewhere. The food was fine but not memorable. The service was great -- but I did not wish to linger long or make it a true evening of dining. The prices are very high for overall quality. Still, I will return, on occasion, but probably only once a year or so -- and next time, I will call rather than booking on line so I may request window seating. I hesitated to write a review, I don't mean to be negative -- overall, it was fair for the price. I don't think everything should be 'extra' at those prices."

  • "The Carlton is one of our favorite restaurants. Great place if you have dietary restrictions. Chef is very willing to work with you to provide gluten free/dairy free menu options. Wait staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Tony was very helpful in making recommendations and accommodating our special dietary requests. Food and service were excellent; good sized portions. We were celebrating 2 birthdays, and they brought out two complimentary birthday treats--their signature tollhouse cookie (more like a brownie) served warm with ice cream and chocolate drizzled all over and topped with whipped cream. Yum!"

This evening, although the entree selections were good, they were definitley not up to expectations. The Sea Bass received the highest praise and the Bolognese was good. But I won't be ordering the scallops again at The Carlton after a second less than well prepared dish. But we will be back!"

But WITH fresh, creative dishes brimming with flavor, treating vegetables and proteins with equal reverence. When one of us judged his steak unevenly cooked and sent it back, the rest of us dallied a bit with our dishes in front of us, but we didn't wait long at all -- a perfect replacement arrived immediately. An impressive correction. Attentive, flawless service that never interrupted conversation at a beautifully situated table for eight! An exciting wine list that includes great wines by the glass adds to the relaxed atmosphere, as does an explicit welcome on the website that tells you to come as you are, no dress code."

  • "I have been to The Carlton many times since it opened and it is consistently one of the best restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh. Owner Kevin Joyce sweats all the details to assure that his patrons have the absolute best dining experience. The restaurant is only two blocks from Consol Energy Center so it is a great spot for pre-game dinner. (They also validate parking which is a bonus for Consol events). It also has direct access to the T line which makes getting there very convenient from anywhere downtown and South Hills. Great food, great wine list, great atmospher and great location. What more could you want!!!"

  • "We went to dinner here before going to the ballet at the Benedum because we wanted to take the limo there. The food was very good, but the service seemed harried. We finished early, declining to have dessert (despite the waiter saying we had time for dessert) because we wanted to make sure we got the limo in time. We stood outside in the freezing cold for such a long time with about 20 other people. Some went back in to check with the restaurant , but were told that they have 5 limos so one should come along. This didn't help us because from 7:30 on, none of them came by. Ultimately, we were late for the ballet and were not permitted to sit in our reserved seats. While I would go back to the Carlton again, I would not go for pre-theater."

All our dinners were exceptional, including our wine and dessert! I made the reservations for dinner before our theater night at the O'Reilly Theater. The complimentary Limo ride to and from the theater is always such a nice luxurious touch. My husband's brother and his wife were absolutely thrilled with the Limo, as they did not even know that this service was available. Their first visit to the Carlton was last year for Valentine's Day, so they were so happy that I made our dinner reservations for the play. Our friendly waiter, Russell, was knowledgeable, & clearly a professional in the restaurant business."

  • "Previously, I had only been to the Carlton for lunch. Dinners, as I knew, were more expensive. They are still a good value for the quality of the food and the service. Since I'm on a modest weight-loss regimen at the moment, I ordered mostly vegan for soup and salad and went with the salmon for my entree. All were well prepared and quite delicious. Our server was attentive and pleasant. I'm sure that I'll find a rason to return for a future special meal."

  • "We consider the Carlton the best overall dining experience in Pittsburgh. They excel in all categories. Food is a personal taste item, so I judge that on quality of what is being served. I also judge that based on the effort a chef puts into that serving. Anyone can throw a slab of meat on a grill. I then factor in price. it is tough to beat the Carlton in any category, but near impossible to beat them over all."

  • "The Restaurant Week menu was excellent & a bargain to boot! Our mistake was to dine at The Carlton the night of a Penguin's hockey game. The restaurant was packed & maybe because we admitted we weren't going to the game service was slow as the servers worked to get the game goers on their way. At one point it took so long for our main courses to come we almost asked our server what was going on for by then the restaurant had largely emptied out but still we waited. This is not a major criticism since we have dined at The Carlton before & not had this experience. As stated above the food was very good & The Carlton remains one of our favorite dining spots."

  • "The quality of the food at The Carlton is outstanding. Two of us had grouper and the other had salmon. The pesto mashed potatoes with crab that were served with the grouper were so delicious, and there was a nice mix of vegetables that accompanied both dinners. Our server was very attentive, but not overly so. We were able to converse with each other, and she would occasionally stop by to see if we needed anything. The Carlton is one of our favorite places to dine in Pittsburgh."
