Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent, which is why we go often. One of the best restaurants anywhere we have eaten at."

  • "The menu sounded exciting but the food was disappointing. The service and cocktails were excellent."

  • "L and I think this may be the best place we have ever eaten anywhere in the world. We travel quite a bit, but always look forward to our dinners here. I had a solo lunch here today, and again great."

  • "We've eaten at The Carlton many times & the food has always been outstanding: innovative, well prepared & presented. On this visit & our last, however, service was spotty."

  • "A bit of a blast from the past with old style dining elegance. Lots of great food and many reasonable wine choices."

  • "We went here on a Sat. night, lured by an article in the Post-Gazette "weekender" which seemed to say that the Prime Rib usual price of $29.99 was discounted by $10. When we ordered, I attempted to ask the waitress why the discount wasn't noted on the menu. She, apparently not hearing my question, told us that all that was left were end pieces. Thinking this would still be a good meal, we ordered and were served meat which was dried out, unevenly spiced and whose presentation was gross. The coup de grace, however, was the charge - $29.99! We were told that the usual price was $39.99!! When we asked about this, we were given snarky and sarcastic responses. For the record, the Zagat #1 rated steak house in D.C. charges $36. for Prime Rib!"

  • "We forgot just how good the Carlton is!!! We had not gone for a few years, but the experience was perfect. The appearance is very classy. Our waiter Bobby has been there for years and was absolutely the best. The dinner was incredible, from the wine, the appetizer, my fish entree to the awesome dessert. We went before a show at the Benedum. the free parking and the limo service to and from the show make it really easy to get in and out of town. We will be back!"

  • "My husband and I were celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary! The dinner was delicious. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The pace of the courses was perfect - not rushed and not slow. The restaurant surprised us with their signature brownie dessert as an anniversary treat. They even wrote 'Happy Anniversary' on the plate using a raspberry coulis. A nice, unexpected surprise. Outstanding restaurant!!"

  • "For a Friday night, it was quite reserved and vacant. Service was acceptable. Waiter missed the "dirty" instruction on the martini, but the pour was generous. I'm not a big eater, but for the price the portion of Veal Portobello was a little scant...more Portobello than Veal. Salad also small, but tasty. Asparagus side dish was served about as plain as possible...7 spears rolling on a small plate and already cold. Parking takes some serious effort in that garage as it's necessary to navigate down (and then back out!) two levels in a tight circle. (I'm not show how anyone in a Suburban can pull it off). My guests enjoyed their meal with no complaints."

  • "My husband and I had wonderful service in the bar area for a pre-dinner drink and snacks. As always, the service and food in the restaurant were both excellent. He had a salmon special which he couldn't say enough good things about. Then used the free limo service to attend a show at the Benedum. A great evening!"

  • "Can't beat the free limo service to various events in downtown Pittsburgh."

  • "We visited Pittsburgh for the Fourth of July Weekend. I read the reviews on Open Table, and gave the Carlton a shot. The food was excellent - especially the Duck (with candied walnuts and cherries (and more)) over pasta. The Dessert Selection was outstanding - I highly recommend the banana cream pie. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. For taking a chance on a restaurant in another city, it turned out to be a great evening with the family."

  • "My wife and I went to the Carlton to celebrate our wedding anniversary, as we have done many times before. The waiter was very courteous and efficient. This was the first time that we were disappointed. My wife ordered Coconut Shrimp and was disappointed. It had so much panko that she couldn't taste the coconut. I ordered Mahi-Mahi and the breading overpowered the taste of the fish. They used to provide a small loaf of fresh bread, now it's 4 slices of two kinds of bread. The restaurant was also much noisier than previous visits. Apparently, there is now a foreman that supervises the servers behind the wall in their area. He shouted orders that reminded us of a diner-not a classy restaurant where we spent $120.00! ..Disappointing!"

  • "Like the enigizer bunny, they just go on and on, outperforming everyone else. The food prep, quality and prices are great. The service impeccable. It is our favorite and most frequented by us for dinner, and I often solo lunch there. It is absolutely one of my top ten on a worldwide basis."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "Although the food was good, I didn't feel the menu adequately described the dish I ordered. Once the restaurant got busier, our service was very slow."

  • "My husband and I have been to The Carlton 3 times now and each time more better than the last. The manager heard us say to another couple that we were celebrating our 1st anniversary later this month and he bought us a drink. The food for not of the run of the mill, very unique and very delicious."

  • "One of my favorite places to dine in Pittsburgh. The service is excellent and extremely personable. We are always made to feel like family and special. Food is great and we always leave satisfied. It is easy to get to and parking is not an issue. LOVE IT!"

  • "Attended a special Italian wine dinner with another couple. Seven award-winning wines were served with ample pours. Each food course was excellent from the swordfish to the wild boar rack to the sweet potato creme brûlée bread pudding. The $109 pp price was deemed good value. This was our 2nd visit to the Carlton in the last week -- this is a classy restaurant with food which is consistently great and an extensive list of wines which are modestly priced. We've celebrated many occasions at The Carlton and will continue to do so."

  • "This place is consistently great. The food is great, their idea of special is something new and good. A lot of business people hit it for lunch. It's less crowded and romantic in the evening with the lights down"

  • "Having found it difficult to get a reservation at some of the other "hot" spots in Pittsburgh, we checked on the availability of a table for 4 at The Carlton. We are so glad that we were unable to make a reservation anywhere else after going to The Carlton. Ambiance was great, wine list something out of a fairy tail (6000 bottles available to choose from in a unique variety ways to select from), Michael (our waiter) was extraordinary in every way and the food was scrumptious. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at The Carlton and will definitely return the next time we are in Pittsburgh. "

  • "My wife and I were floored at the low quality of our dinner on a Friday evening, our first and only visit to this institution. The Carlton seemed to have all the earmarks of a high-quality dining experience, but the food was simply terrible. The portobello salad was blah; the salmon was overcooked and the setup for it was a mishmash of flavors that spelled "bad idea." Even the bread, a dried-out brioche, was nearly inedible from a fine-dining perspective. The impression was that here we have a cook, not a chef, running the show. Bad ingredients plus bad execution couldn't be overcome by a capable and pleasant server or a creditable wine list. I'd run, not walk to McCormick & Schmick's or the Capital Grille the next time. "

  • "The food and service was above and beyond my expectations. The atmosphere was very old school but didn't distract from the lovely time we had at our special dinner."
