This is our second time at The Capitol prior to going to a show at the Hobby Center. We were able to get in and out in a timely manner. The Thursday night steak specail is a great value; 8-10 oz steak, mashed potato, vegetable, salad and a glass of wine for $18. The other menu items we have enjoyed include the short rib tacos appetizer (enough for a meal), roasted tomato basil soup (a cup is enough because it is a rich soup) and spicy pasta. Our server was very attentive and checked to ensure our drinks were properly made to our taster.

  • 4 Stars for new to us place

There were four of us in our party. Upon arrival we were taken right away to our table. The restaurant was empty... 7:15pm on a Saturday Night. There was a centerpiece with our reservation, name, number of people in our party and reservation time in the center of the table. I thought this was a nice touch. Privacy issues do exist though... The wait staff were very attentive, starting with sharing the wine specials... four bottles were half off. We picked one and started our meal. All the food was very tasty with one minor issue, my mashed potatoes under the steak were cold, everyone else at the table were served hot food. We especially liked the short ribs, brisket chilli, Big John ribeye and seabass.

After recently attending a work-related function at The Capitol, it has become a part of my rotation of restaurants/bars to take friends and my spouse. Great atmosphere with high ceilings, classic architectural details, and it never seems to be overcrowded.

Food was good enough, but ambiance is just average, and service was spotty. It is more of a club than a restaurant.

One of the more enjoyable restaurants I've had the pleasure to enjoy. Staff was very attentive and the manager also made several appearances to inquire if all was as expected. They make you feel like you are the most important customer they have.

Pretty good food, and conveniently located downtown near theaters and concert halls. In terms of a dining experience, its a little hurried (probably better for lunch rather than dinner).

  • This is a great little restaurant

This is a great little restaurant Downtown. We ate an early dinner, and only 2 other tables had guests along with a party upstairs. The decor was really nice. Service was great, but not as attentive as you'd think with so few diners. Cocktails were tasty, though a little pricey. I had my first Skinny Margarita, and it was a winner. Arugula and Goat Cheese salad was great. I never thought about pairing goat cheese with figs, but am going to try to make this at home. Dessert was just the right size for a treat without the guilt, and, at only 2.95, quite the deal! Altogether, the two of us paid $61 for two cocktails, 2 entrees and two desserts. The view will be greatly improved once street construction is finished.

  • A special celebratory lunch
    Barklee
    Dined on 1/18/2013
A special celebratory lunch for 7 with an 11:45 am Friday reservation. We arrived to an empty restaurant and were seated and beverage orders given. We then ordered lunch and proceeded to wait. After we were seated two large groups arrived were seated and their orders taken. The table for 10 to our left ordered after we did, received their food and were finishing up before we received our food. When the food arrived at 12:40 the soups were cold, and missing silverware (soup spoon and knife) took an extraordinary long time to be provided. Ice tea and water glasses were very slow to be filled and only after several requests. I spoke with management the following day and as would be expected got excuses. They did offer a free lunch

This was my first time to Capitol. I was looking for a nice restaurant with good food that is close to the theater district. It was a Thursday night at 6pm. There was a oil industry happy hour in the front. We sat in the main restaurant. Only one or two other couples were interspersed throughout the dining room. I imagine later and with the live music, it would pick up.The hostess and waitstaff were amazing. They were attentive, friendly and even funny at times. They gave great suggestions. We both had steak, but two different cuts. Mine was the T-bone and too marbled and over seasoned. My date enjoyed theirs, but I tried it and it was better; however, I wasn't impressed. Overall I like the place. I'd give it another shot.

The service was fantastic, I never had to ask for anything. Our server magically appeared refilling glasses, clearing dishes, or just checking how we were doing. The food was also terrific and prepared fresh with high quality ingredients. This is a definite do over.

Our group showed up at 5:45 PM, the restaurant was nearly empty so it was very quiet for us. When the restaurant has a concert it gets quite loud and crowded. My recommendation is show up early if you want the quite scene.

This can be a great location with the concept of the dinner/dance. However the night we were there it seems that all the management was out and it showed. The service was very bad and the poor waiter was overwhelmed with tables. The tables were to close and the music to load to talk. On the other hand, we had a. Great time dancing to the band.

  • Hands down the worst experience

Hands down the worst experience I've had while entertaining a group of people. The bar did not stock any of the items listed on their wine list. It took over an hour to get our first drink and place an order. Then our order was taken again 30 minutes later. When the food came, one of the seven entrees did not come and one other was wrong. The food was mediocre and the music started 2 hours late. A big disappointment.

I almost canceled my reservation and walked out, but I'm glad they went to the effort of keeping me from making that mistake. That evening, I had a concert ticket for the Houston Symphony; I'd picked The Capitol because it was within easy walking distance of Jones Hall. I arrived, and was led to a table, and was surprised to discover that they were setting up for some sort of jazz Halloween party (if it was mentioned on their web site, I completely failed to notice it). As I was looking around to find someone to formally cancel my reservation, an employee quickly explained that the party would not begin for some time, and that the full menu was indeed available. I had the chicken with mushroom pesto ravioli, and it was excellent.

We ate early evening as we were going on to a show. We almost stayed as the band for the evening were warming up as we ate and I would hope attracted a larger crowd for the night. The food was very good, service efficient and friendly. The Capitol is in a good location and has convenient parking options.

  • Not Quite Satisfactory
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

The food was outstanding, as was the venue itself. The evening started off a bit rocky though; the hostess had just seated us in one of their beauiful booths, handed us menues, and a server had brought us water...she returns to tell us that she is sorry but the booths are reserved for those staying for the band. She moved us (menues, water, silverware and all) to a nearby table. We are in the specialty food industry and because of the travel included we dine at many upscale restaurants every year, so I've gotten used to poor service lately that seems to follow this generation but it's still a nusance. Also there is an add'tl cover charge for most of the bands $10
