Tucked away Port Costa provided the perfect setting for my birthday dinner. Bull Valley roadhouse patrons that evening was a vibrant mix of hipsters and locals. The food is inventive, fresh, and very reasonable priced for what you get in this historic setting. We'll be back !

The trip to Port Costa was interesting. Upon arriving we were asked if we wanted inside or outside dining, we chose outside. The dining area was rustic but clean. The food was very tasty. The bar drinks were pre-prohibition style. Wine list was 3 out of 5 stars. We had the lamb dish, very good. The mussels - good and the Bruschetta - very good. Service was well done.

This is the kind of place you want to go to have something special. You won't find "buttery chardonnay" here, but you will find a special wine that is difficult to get & you likely won't have heard of it, because its a special find. The food is local & fresh, with some great chefs in the house. The cocktails, are simply amazing! Fresh ingredients, handmade syrups, incredible bartenders help create that perfect combo with the lovely food. Go there when you're feeling adventurous, or when you want to treat that special someone.

Loved the salad with figs - yum - and the fried chicken and biscuits - really exceptional. The only reason I gave four (rather than five) stars was the beans that came with the chicken. I just didn't care for them much; nothing special. Wish the wine list had more to pick from in the $30 to $40 range.

Bull valley has very good food and the location has lots of character. All were very friendly and efficient....we did not have to wait.... Modules with frites is a favorite and I will order this again. Noise level goes up after 6, so if you want something a little quieter, goo early!

It is rare for us to find restaurant food that is better than what my husband or I prepare at home. We seek out places that inspire us to try some new foods or combinations. Bull Valley was a pleasant surprise. It has been 20 years since we have eaten there, our experience in the past was that the service was pretty poor, though the food was passable. Many friends urged us to give them another chance. We really enjoyed the new menu, the sunflowers were amazing as was the Farro risotto. My husbands pork stew was just to his liking. The fact that they have Calvados on the dessert menu made my husbands night. We would definitely recommend Bull Valley to our friends and will go back soon.

Starters, salads, entrees, sides all very good. Fresh produce, interesting variations and presentations. Walnut and fig salad had a wonderful vinaigrette, eggplant and tomato starter dish was like a bruschetta and very flavorful. As a vegetarian I didn't eat the pork chop but companions said great taste, but had a lot of fat. Desserts less spectacular. Peach upside down cake just fair, chocolate pot de creme was pretty good. Homemade honey ice cream the definite winner, very light with a lot of flavor. Just enough for a taste of most things. Had we been people with larger appetites, portions would have been completely inadequate. We usually share appetizers and desserts anyway, but for the price, the portions needed to be larger.

My 3rd visit & 1st brunch. The 1st time, for dinner, my friend & I were completely bowled over by every single course of fantastic food & by the wonderful waiter, who could not have been more charming. 2nd time, took my husband & another couple (MAJOR foodies) for dinner. Once again every single item was outstanding & service good. I TALKED THIS PLACE UP TO ANYONE WHO WOULD LISTEN! Unfortunately, the brunch experience missed the mark. Took 2 friends who loved the setting & the decor as much as I, but the food was nothing to warrant the trek for them to Port Costa from SF and Oakland. Waffles were cold, cardboard-y and so disappointing that they overshadowed the hash which was good. Waiter was very polite but seemed sad and disengaged.

  • Not for big groups on a budget

I've been here many times, and the service is great, but they REQUIRE that you choose family style if you have 8 or more in your group. If anyone in your group is on a budget this is NOT a good option. It ended up being $73/person not including drinks, and the amount of food each person got was the same as what you'd normally order on your own for half the price. Also there were two of us that don't eat meat, but didn't want to make a big fuss with the rest of the group and basically had a bunch of carbs instead...which I can cook at home very easily. I wish they would change that requirement. If not I'll only go back in smaller groups, but never again with the family style serving. The servers were very sweet and attentive as always.

Had been reading about this place and finally had an opportunity to try. Worth the drive...despite the many curves. The setting is throw back funky..in a good way. My only nit...tables are a little close so there is no private conversations. Apps were inventive and tasty. We did the Sunflower Blossoms and the Fried Green Beans. I would come back for the beans. For our main courses, we did the duck and the lamb sugo. Both were very tasty. I was warned about the duck being on the bone (half duck). Very flavorful, but way too much work to get it off. Would have loved to have had it without. For dessert...peach upside down cake...nice touch. We will be back. Next time, will do the chicken...our near by diners recommended it.

The three of us started at the unique old bar and drank our tasty cocktails made by a knowlegeable mixologist. We sat in the patio and were served by DeeDee who was pleasant and attentive. Since it is family style we shared our walnut/fig salad, the pork chop, and sides of gratin squash and the mac and cheese. We cleaned our plates and were especially delighted by the squash dish. We shared the peach cake which was good, but it needed more creame fraiche. Definitely worth the hours drive! A notable destination!

We had a party of four. We ate on the patio. We could hear each other talk and the music was fabulous and funky - and not too loud. They served us family style. We ordered the melon salad and ribs as an appetizer, two entrees (fried chicken and pork stew), and a side of mac and cheese. We then shared a chocolate desseet (a moose like pudding that was delicious and rich). Everything tasted delicious and we had no left overs. We had a very enjoyable time. Good food. Good service. Good company. And we love funky old Port Costa.

Service was great. Very limited menu, food quality was subpar for the prices. Salads were under sauced. Green beans were great. Drinks, specifically a Margarita was weak. Noise was not a factor because I had asked for a quiet area and they seated us in the outdoor area. which was fine. But, overall a disappointing dining experience.

The bar is a great hangout ; tasty, fun cocktails. I had my best-ever fresh, local salmon entre at BVR on 7/25. They have fun menu items and folksy wait-staff. They recognize and greet you on return visits. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but one need not order everything. Share with fellow diners; the idea is family-style. Plus you'll be in Port Costa! How many people you know have been there, much less repeatedly. It's great fun.

I had wanted to visit, and we were finally able to on the last Friday in July. Note, the one road in and out of Port Costa is very narrow and winding, and the parking is a little lacking if you have to park in the area that is not maintained by P.C. Outside of that (they have no control there), the evening was great thanks to the Bull Valley Roadhouse meal. Most dishes are family style. We each started with a fresh and wonderful salad, because we both wanted to start with a different one, so there! Erin was a fabulous server and perfectly described the plates we were considering as well as the wine! I had the Ling Cod, and my husband had the fried chicken. Perfect! It's a very unique place, and we will be back for brunch, very soon!

We were surprised by the bikers and motorcycle noise of the town and the dust on the street and flying around the parking lot. It's definitely a CASUAL dining experience. All that said, once we relaxed and got our food, it was wonderful. The food was obviously fresh. The downside was that they ran out of one of the entrees we wanted and one of the desserts we wanted on a Sunday early evening. The post cards are a wonderful idea and the staff was very accommodating.
