{Join us for SUNDAY BRUNCH!}

The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.

    I love this place for many reasons, but after a dozen fabulous trips to Bull Valley for dinner, I made brunch reservations for friends who were traveling to the Bay Area. As usual, the restaurant ambience was stellar, as was the food. My only disappointment was that we seemed like a distraction to the waiter --- something I have never encountered at Bull Valley. He avoided every attempt to get his attention during the entire brunch. Normally their service is 5star. This past weekend, it didn't even register a 1. I suggest that Bull Valley give he same attention to brunch as dinner or dismiss it altogether.

  • DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE

    We have eaten here probably 4 times since it opened 2 years ago. Every time it was outstanding and we couldn't wait to return. This past weeks' experience was no where close to our previous meals. We're thinking that success has gone to the owner's head. Our group ordered 3 fried chicken and 2 steak entrees. The steaks were very good but all the chickens arrived overcooked and dry and the bisquits were dry and too doughy. The cole slaw was limp and flavorless and the sauce that came with the plate didn't help anything. In contrast to prior visits, our fried chicken was tender, juicy, succulent. and the mashed potatoes were to die for. If only everything could have been the same as past visits... Whatever the reasons for our disappointing experience, we will not be returning guests.

    I had high expectations for the Bull Valley Road House, but sadly was disappointed. My first impression of the restaurant was that it was stuffy (fireplace going when it was 75 outside), especially in the bar area. The patio dining area was really lacking ambience, & you could see clutter in the back yard through the glass walls. The crispy green beans & macaroni sides were good, but my husbands steak was really rare (requested medium rare), and my pork & polenta was really greasy. The servers were nice, but seemed very inexperienced. It really bugs me when you pay $38 for a steak, and the servers have to ask who ordered it when they bring it to the table. I thought the prices were high for the quality of the food and service.

    First off the two brunch items I preferred they were out of by noon. Prices are high. Food quality is above average... But not by much. A little disappointing for all the hype. Service was good, but again, was average. Did I say prices were high? Yes, they are. Would I go back? Possibly.

    We had 11:15 reservation for Sunday Brunch. They sat us right away at a nice table. There were quite of few empty tables at 11 AM. There was 4 of us for a special birthday celebration. We ordered a couple of salads to share and entrees. The food came out just whenever it was ready and not in order. I got mine late and it was wrong. Everyone was done and I had to ask him for my food. They brought out an over done tamale pie, scorched on the bottom and dry. They never refilled our water without us asking, twice. The food was good, but pricey and certainly not worth the poor service.

    I have a hard time believing that we spent $135.00 for breakfast and I'm not mad about it. We live in Martinez so it only takes us a few minutes to get there, so it's dangerous. Love it there and Trevor was delightful and a great server.

    A fun location and ambiance, but ridiculously over-priced. A pretty ordinary waffle and tomale pie that was tasty, but "tough" and rather small. Too bad, because the Roadhouse is close to home and we love to go for Sunday brunch.

    We've been going to the Bull Valley Roadhouse since it fist open (when we can get a table). It is great! It is different! For great food served to share and a nostalgic atmosphere, and drinks from the bar you've only heard about, this is the place... Now we'll never get a table. Just a note for those who keep track of these things, while flying to The East coast last year, I picked up the airline magazine and was astonished to see the BVRH listed in the top 75 new restaurants in the world! That's right... THE WORLD!

    It was my wife's birthday and when I made the reservation I mentioned that she has difficulty digesting onions. When we were seated the hostess conferred with my wife and then when into kithen to confer with the chef as to which dishes would be best. She came back to the table with a specially marked menu! Our server was delightful and knowledgable about the food and ingredients. Our dishes were well prepared, albeit some quite large, and delicious. My wife and I love food and entertain frequently in our home. As a result we had a few "nit-picky" suggestions about some of the dishes. These were cordially accepted by our server, and lead to more discussion about food and entertaining. All in all, a wonderful evening. Thanks, we'll be back!

    you have to try the bull valley roadhouse...my husband hadn't been there in years since it was the bull valley inn. we spent several anniversaries there...now probably ten years later and under new ownership we came back for our 26th. wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. we LOVE this place...from the scenic drive just to get there, the small town (i feel like i'm stepping back to the 1800's), and then walking into this restaurant lost in a time capsule...the food, wait staff, whole dining experience made us remember why we keep coming back.my husband and i don't drink and we were pleasantly surprised with their great selection of pops and flavored sparkling waters...do yourself a favor and find your new favorite restaurant...

    Wanting our Canadian houseguests to experience a unique California dining experience, we chose BVR as the place. They met and exceeded every expectation: food, service & ambiance. We all came away raving. From the chilied green beans and the pork belly salad, as starters; to the entrees of cod in parchament to the fried chicken, all were tastefully prepared and served. Each bite prompted an approving remark. What a place to show California dining at its best.

    We had reservtions. Got right in. were on of 3 tables to be seated at 6:15pm. By 7:15pm the place was full. Others were getting there dinner and we just looked around.We had to ask for bread and water at our table. we asked at about 7:20pm and they said they were waiting for us to finish the salad, of which was done 30 minutes prior. We only ordered a salad, one entrée and one side to share and the service was terrible. When we finally got our steak it was good. We will not go back there again. Server was unfriendly as well as unattentative. We spend a $100.00 and got terrible service. This was our first visit to the Bull Valley roadhouse and last.

    I took my fiance here for his birthday dinner. The atmosphere was great, cozy and old-timey, with great cocktails. The fried chicken and biscuits were insane, perfection. The pecan pie was unbelievable, we were so full it was painful but worth it. I forgot the leftovers in the car overnight and my fiance still ate them the next day! The only bad thing was our server, who was slow and pushy. I still have to give 5 stars as the overall experience was so lovely. The hostess and manager were great. The drive there was an experience in itself, it felt like a work night vacation. You are driving down this road thinking 'this can't possibly be right...' and expecting Leatherface to jump into the road with a chainsaw. I'd come again in a heartbeat.

    We had heard wonderful reviews from media and friends. The experience was great except we all thought the food was less great than expected.The halibut was dry, as was the fried chicken. Mashed potatoes and gravy,cauliflower, and pork were very ordinary, without much flavor. For the price of the dinner, we expected it to be more outstanding. The best dishes were the two salads we ordered. The desserts, were good.

    Took my family to the Bull Valley Roadhouse for a special birthday treat and had a great dining experience. Wonderful ambience tucked away in slightly funky Port Costa, nice interior; we sat on the back patio with a view of the gardens. The food is a little pricey, but all the dishes we ordered were great. We liked the concept of sharing and followed our friendly waitress's suggestion of ordering two main dishes, two appetizers, and two sides. This was enough even to keep our two hungry teenage boys satisfied, and the quality of the food will definitely have us come back, despite the lengthy drive from Oakland.
