The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.

  • "We were greeted and seated on time for a 1:30 brunch reservation by friendly staff. Our order included the Fried Chili Salted Green beans, Fantastic muscles with fries, Chicken tenders and Cornmeal waffle, Pulled Pork and a side of Mac n Cheese. Incredibly good Steak and Eggs were mistakenly delivered before the pork topped with eggs and we had several bites before realizing it was the wrong dish. We ended up taking the pork dish home. The pork dish turned out to be the only one not worth ordering everything else was superb. The portions are large and as the server told us, easily shared. Be careful not to order too much food. The Roadhouse is in an out-of-the-place in quirky little burg of 200 residents but it is worth a visit."

  • " Prior to making our reservation, we read the posted reviews, and the four in our party (celebrating two special occasions) arrived expecting a unique, funky location with a pricey menu that would reflect a quality meal. Unfortunately, we found the first two elements but not the last. The food was mediocre at best, and the service was rude at one point. In addition, our waiter kept telling us that they served "family style", in spite of their website not indicating this, nor their menu not lending itself to that concept, (except maybe for the fried chicken, which was tasty). In short, the gap between the prices we paid and the experience we should have had was so great, we will not be returning."

Warning: portions are substantial. Drinks: spectacular - pre-prohibition cocktail list Lagniappe: the waiter brought us some of the restaurant's postcards and pens - the cards are sent to recipients as a courtesy - nice touch. We'll be back here."

  • "A short drive from the freeway takes you back in time to the Bull Valley Roadhouse, where the food is fresh, simple, and simply delicious. We enjoyed a crisp salad; lean, marinated steak off the grill, flavorful potatoes, fine red wine, and a small but memorable dessert--chocolate, caramel, with a hint of salt. Not to mention a special that night, corn on the cob, tender and sweet, just like when you were a little kid. Our waitress, Erin, was attentive and very helpful, clearly enjoying being there for us."

  • "This has become our favorite restaurant in the area - much better than anything else nearby. They've solved one of the big brunch problems of the past offering shared dishes, bringing them as they are ready instead of waiting until everything is done. This worked exceptionally well and everyone enjoyed sharing bites of multiple dishes. Still some kinks to work out: our drink order arrived at the end of the meal. There must have been a problem, but they didn't tell us. But with great food and company, we barely noticed. I still prefer the fried chicken to the chicken tenders. Otherwise everything we had was outstanding. Their staff is charming. The setting is rustic and pleasant. New for us was finally trying Earl's poundcake. Great!"

  • "Very good Food. Ribs, some of the best I've had. Ditto the chicken. Would order the Mussels again. Great selection of non-alcoholic drinks. People enjoyed the cocktails. Service was a little strange. Server was enthusiastic and helpful. The timing of the food's arrival at our table was so dis-jointed as spoil an otherwise good meal out. The appetizers came out one at a time over a 10 minute span. The side dishes came out first, followed by one at a time entree, 5 to 10 minutes later. Our group likes to eat together, warm sides with warm entrees. When queried our server replied, that's family style??? At these prices I expect better coordination between kitchen and table."

  • "Allow time to get to this place. It is well off Highway 80 / Crockett Exit. Careful in the parking lot, don't wear 4 inch spiked heels. On a nice day, walk over and look out upon the Carquinez Straights. The restaurant is a "throw back" to another time with personality. We chose to arrive 1/2 hour early and sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly, and I loved my bourbon drink and the 5 kinds of bitters that were available. Wait staff were attentive, informative and fun. We had the crispy green beans & farro salad. Fried Chicken & Ribs. A delicious sauvignon blanc & pinot recommended by our waitress. If you want to try something fun and are up to the drive Bull Valley Roadhouse is a great choice. We will return soon."

  • "Love the Bull Valley Roadhouse! What a pleasure to step through the doors of this great old place. Massive antique bar where bartenders produce glorious concoctions of pre-prohibition era cocktails. Food is delicious; all dishes served family style and are meant to be shared. We started with a crisp and tasty Caesar salad, followed by rib-eye steak and a summer squash gratin. (So nice to have vegetables treated like food rather than something you 'have' to eat. Very good.) While we were eating our salad I spied a couple behind us enjoying a big bowl of French fries, so we added that to our order. Boy were they good! Dessert was delicious too! Such a refreshing experience away from the clatter and bang of trendy spots. Wonderful wait-staff."

  • "We went for brunch, and were totally entranced by the charm and attention to detail of the Roadhouse. Food was delicious. Drinks merited high praise...Pimms...nice. Only issues were out of the Roadhouse hands...Big table with many squirmy noisy kids behind us...and yes we are all parents, but having a child free time...and yup....we all know how it goes. Also there was HUGE motorcycle memorial taking place in town that day...I need to reiterate...HUGE. So much noise out on the street. But the fact that when we sat down, we were presented with warm wet towels ...just like we had stepped off the stage coach. Charming and delicious. Definitely want to go back for a romantic dinner"

Unfortunately Sunday brunch in Port Costa is sort of a gamble with all of the motorcyclists descending on this small community. If you decide to go, park away from the end gravel parking lot and walk to the restaurant."

  • "We first read about the restaurant on the Chronicle 100 Best Bay Area restaurants. We were in the area and were able to get an early reservation. It was well worth it. We ordered the pulled pork stew and the scallop risotto and a side of braised kale plus a house-made soda and a specialty cocktail. Great dishes, made with locally sourced ingredients. I especially liked their selections from "generous foragers from in town and Crockett"."

  • "I love the the Bull Valley. I try to hit that place at least once a month. Earl and Samuel are so welcoming. The hostess, wait staff and bartenders are attentive, give great drink suggestions and are there when you need them (without hovering). The food is beyond yummy. I like the sides and starters best for dinner. The warm olives, pork ribs, fried brussel sprouts, and fried green beans are to die for! Baked eggs with Kale and the fried chicken with cheddar waffles are terrific for brunch. Last but not least - the cocktails are the tastiest in the land. Served up perfectly every time. "

  • "1 - Outdoor seating on the back patio is definitely preferable. 2 - The food combined down-home with more exotic combinations. It was all good with the exception of my dessert: the pie pastry was tough. The "family style" servings mean that most plates, including entrees, wil serve two persons adequately. 3 - A short but excellent and varied wine list. We drank a bottle of Italian Dolcetto - a relatively rare grape - which was excellent and fairly priced. 4 - The wait staff was friendly, casual without overdoing it, and attentive without hovering. 5 - The overall atmosphere - a funky old building down on the water in Port Costa - is comfortable. In short, this place combines very good food and a friendly vibe. Definitely a keeper."

  • "I loved the renovation of the old building to start with, especially the wall of carte de visite's. We were seated immediately & the wait person was friendly and relaxed. I never felt we were being rushed or talked into more choices. She explained about the family style which was really fun. In fact my only complaint is about the steak. We should have sent it back as it was too rare for all of us and we never got the portion left as a doggie bag. Very happy memory for my birthday. Thanks."

  • "Being a native NorCal person I was EXTREMELY please that the wine list had more than just Cali Chard and Cab. Noteable old world selections gave every person at the table the option to find an appropriate bevy of their liking. Must come back for dinner and have a bottle of the Lopez De Heredia!!! The half bottle selection was a nice surprise and obviously the cocktails where in depth and delicious. Food was great too! "
