  • Parking Details: We are fortunate to have perhaps the biggest parking lot of any restaurant in Asheville. Please park anywhere in the gravel parking lot on the dockside of the Wedge Studios building. If street parking is preferred, please park on Roberts street and follow the staircase by the Wedge Brewery, continue past the brewery and down the dock until you find us.
A word from The Bull and Beggar
Located between Downtown and West Asheville in the River Arts District The Bull and Beggar is the convergence of Chef Matt Dawes (formerly of Table) and Drew Wallace (The Admiral).
The menu leans toward French technique though not a haute version of French cuisine.
We focus on preparing solid, fortifying, and easily satisfying food, mostly from country origins.
Our personal love of seafood (particularly raw) is the heart of our menu, where you will find daily oyster selections, meticulously cleaned, precisely shucked and artfully presented.
Our service is urbane and educated while remaining gentle and practical.
Our restaurant was renovated by a talented team of Asheville artists resulting in a very cavernous, calming and spacious dining room.

  • "We've eaten a number of times at Bull and Beggar since the opening and enjoy it every time. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a loft restaurant in New York or Chicago. The food is superb and we often order a number of the smaller plates along with dessert and skip the entrees. This particular visit was exceptional in that we saw the cast of a new Loomis Fargo Heist movie which is filming in Asheville. On our visit we saw Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig. The previous week Zak Galifianakis was with the cast having dinner at Bull and Beggar. If you arrive an hour or so early, it is worth sitting outside and having a beer next door at Wedge Brewery. The people watching here is second to none."

  • "My husband and I visited asheville for his birthday in mid July. This restaurant was recommended by a bartender we had met earlier in the trip. He told us Bull and Beggar was hands down top 3 in Asheville. We couldn't agree more. We both had appetizers (butter bib salad and octopus) that were delicious. Our entrees were mouth watering (chicken and grouper) and we shared a peanut butter chocolate tart. We couldn't get enough! Our server was friendly and kept my water glass full. We will definitely be back!"

  • "The food was AWESOME!! They have a short selection of entrees and a long selection of small plates. The cheese plate I had for an appetizer had nice size servings of 5 cheeses. I had the lobster roll which was much better than the one I had in Maine. I also had hushpuppies that truly rivaled the low country South Carolina one that I grew up on, but these were served with maple butter!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at B and B. The menu may challenging for some in that there was a limited nbr of entres (4) but multiple small plate options. However, our meals (fish) were excellent. My understanding is the menu changes frequently, so the options would vary as well --note that none of the entre options that night were vegetarian. Service was fine, very friendly and attentive but not overbearing. This is a bistro-like atmosphere, semi-industrial in feel, with a good energy level. Be warned: The seating was a little hard! Given the proximity of the restaurant to Wedge Brewery, if your plans are for Friday night, expect a crowd for the Wedge's open air backyard party -- so, allow for potential parking issues but enjoy the crowd!"

  • "We went for our anniversary dinner and had a fabulous meal! The filet was as good as I've ever had, and my wife's fish was perfectly cooked. The service was good, and our waitress was very knowledgeable on every item on the menu, from the wine selection, to the different varieties of oysters, to the entrees. The ambiance was also well-managed, i.e. not too noisy even though it's a popular venue. The only difficulty we had was in finding it. The street, Payne's, does not show up on many maps, and we spent 15 minutes wandering in search of the restaurant."

I highly recommend the mussels and fries...don't forget to order an amazing loaf of crusty, delicious bread for dipping! The veggies are fresh and beautiful...presentation of everything is top notch.   • "Bull and beggar may be THE reason people say Asheville is "full of amazing restaurants." The double level interior, lined with industrial lighting and book shelves give off a comforting vibe that's not too crammed for the small space. The grouper was easily the best fish I myself and my partner have ever had, in any city. Oyster selection=perfection. The small plate and produce options are a great opportunity for sharing. [Attention bacon lovers...Get the dandelion salad.] Service was extremely friendly, patient, happy, and clearly worked as a team. That alone can make a dining experience delightful but Bull and Beggar has it all."

  • "We went for our 18th anniversary and had one of the best meals ever. We decided to try the "small" plates (not small at all!) and shared the Carne Crudo (steak tartare), Moules in a saffron creme sauce (yum) and the Charred Octopus. All were spectacular! We also had three of their "produce" items -all also excellent! Came home with leftovers for each produce item (great portion size). Asheville is known for excellent restaurants and this is now right at the top of our list. Cannot wait to go back again - won't wait for a special occasion this time. Only drawback is the noise level. It's hard to carry on a normal level conversation because of the brick walls and open ceiling but that won't stop us from returning very soon!"

The mussels were divine, and the octopus was cooked differently, very tender and absolutely delicious. Enjoyed food I have never eaten, a memorable experience. I would highly recommend. Food is creative and good, but don't plan on having a conversation over your meal, since the place is so loud you can't be heard without screaming."

We shared a variety of small plates of incredibly interesting and well-prepared foods. Hard to find a better restaurant in Asheville, and we have a lot of exceptional restaurants here. Got a bit noisy when a bachelorette party arrived. Our server was great, knew her menu and gave terrific recommendations. The grilled octopus is a must try."

  • "We recently ate at the Bull and Beggar for the first time, and it was quite an adventure. Finding it was not simple, and we were gald we happened to look for it a day ahead of our reservation. I would suggest calling them if you get confused. The food was absolutely fresh and each dish was memorable. The noise level due to high ceilings and a crowded upstairs seating that overlooked the tables below, was the only negative as many times, my husband and i could not converse. I would suggest sitting side by side if you can. I had read reviews and chose some of the favorites. The oysters were super fresh and if you love oysters, definitely have a few. The Charred Octopus was as excellent as everyone had said. Don't miss the vegetables. WOW!"

  • "Remarkable and exotic menu with fine fresh combinations, foods and different choices of portion sides, which I appreciate! Oysters were very good, a potato side dish was delicious and new choices and tastes! When one item, fish, was overcooked it was graciously taken and a new perfectly made fish came, in addition to giving us a 25% discount on that item! More than generous. The sound really carries and echoes which made it tough to really talk well, my only criticism. Lovely waitress and waiter for the 2 times we have gone!"

  • "This is a small restaurant next to the Wedge Brewery. Parking is very difficult, so plan for that. The food was very inventive and portions were a decent size. The menu was quite confusing--mostly small plates and side dishes with only five entrees. It was difficult to figure out how much food to order to make a meal. Everything is a la carte so it gets fairly expensive. Limited mixed drink menu but there is a full bar and a nice wine list. Our server was outstanding and the food was delicious. The atmosphere is quiet as it is a very small space, dim lighting, small tables and uncomfortable seating. Overall, we liked the food but didn't leave feeling full and probably will not rush back."

  • "Super disappointed in the quality of food and service at this restaurant. Everything was over-seasoned (read salty) to the point we couldn't finish any of our entrees. Conversely, the fiddle head fern appetizer was under seasoned completely. The chicken liver mousse was the best appetizer, but the server literally ripped it out of my hands as I was preparing the last serving before I could finish even getting any of the jam to go on it. On the flipside, the cocktails were very good and wine menu was also strong. Even with that, it'll be a long while before we return."

  • "This was a birthday celebration for my guest. Service on the slow side. We had to ask repeatedly for someone to flag our waitress to take our wine order. Waitress herself was very personable and went out of her way to offer chocolate mini macaroons with a candle, since we didn't order dessert. Menu was interesting, if not particularly friendly to gluten- and dairy-free types like myself. We sampled several of the small plates and sides; the dishes we ordered were very tasty. Conversation was difficult because of the noise level. Had a bit of trouble finding the place."

  • "I've lived in Asheville for 18 years. I worked in restaurants from the ages of 14-30 and was trained at Le Cordon Bleu. I've moved from having a top 3 list here to a top 5, then a top 10 - now I have a top 13. The Bull & Beggar has held the #1 spot since the first time I ate there shortly after they opened. It has since been found and is usually busy. But it never falls short of delightful. Always a wonderful night with exceptional cuisine. Cheers to the chef and all the staff!"

  • "We like to try lots of items on the menu. The octopus appetizer was the best we'd ever had, and our group also loved the mussels. The kitchen split the main course (sablefish and grouper)for us in the kitchen, which they did happily and this made for a beautiful presentation. Recommend all the side vegetables, inspired combinations like parsnips with 5 spice powder and maple syrup! Wait staff did not rush us, but was attentive, and helpful with the wine list."
