A word from The Bull and Beggar
Located between Downtown and West Asheville in the River Arts District The Bull and Beggar is the convergence of Chef Matt Dawes (formerly of Table) and Drew Wallace (The Admiral).
The menu leans toward French technique though not a haute version of French cuisine.
We focus on preparing solid, fortifying, and easily satisfying food, mostly from country origins.
Our personal love of seafood (particularly raw) is the heart of our menu, where you will find daily oyster selections, meticulously cleaned, precisely shucked and artfully presented.
Our service is urbane and educated while remaining gentle and practical.
Our restaurant was renovated by a talented team of Asheville artists resulting in a very cavernous, calming and spacious dining room.

This is an amazing little restaurant tucked away on a dead end street. Loved it. Cute bars next door where you can sit outside too. VERY original menu items - we had octopus, rabbit, duck and quail eggs at dinner. It was romantic, the food came out unbelievable fast, the flavors were spot on and very original. Ambiance is fantastic. Cant say enough good things about this place. LOVED IT.

Not for my wife and me, mainly, I guess, because we are seniors with some problems hearing. I don't know how to describe the noise level inside. All I know is that our fellow diners, mostly younger, we're talking by yelling, perhaps because they could not hear well. The decor is nice but the hard surfaces seemed to amplify the noise even more...wow! Service was fine, food was just ok and the menu was difficult to comprehend...maybe the age factor again? Anyway, it seems a nice meet and greet spot for the younger set, but we'll not be back and cannot recommend it to our, mostly older, friends.

On a quick vacation to Asheville, I was recommended by a friend to The Bull and Beggar. What a fantastic experience. We tried several of the vegetable plates and indulged in the oysters and shrimp. Everything was terrific. We enjoyed it so much, we went back the second day for the raw bar happy hour (more oysters and shrimp!). Would absolutely recommend this place to those looking for fresh, farm to table inspired dishes.

Was very excited to try something new, and had heard the menu offered such new to me things as octopus. We were delighted to find so many new to us things to choose from. I had scallops with clapshot and black pudding and it was amazingly wonderful! My husband loved the marrow on the filet and the potato dish too. We will most definitely return! Everything was absolutely fabulous. A great place to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you!

My sister and I parlayed a recommendation from a server at another celebrated Asheville spot into a great early dinner at B&B. From an octopus small plate to a dinner consisting of four fresh, robust and creative veg offerings, the dinner displayed artistic depth, a characteristic I consider a hallmark of the best of Asheville. Stoked to visit again with my wife, a now forlorn woman stymied by disparate travel plans from her desire to join us at the Bull and Beggar.

My husband and I had a notably good experience here. The ambiance was pleasant, the service was appropriately attentive, and the food was outstanding. We both had a perfectly made, somewhat inventive cocktail--a great way to start off. We shared four small vegetable plates for an appetizer and each of these were well prepared, delicious, filling. I can't think of many dining experiences where the vegetables were such a strong part of the menu. Lastly, we had a great entree, and I do have to say that fish is a good option here. We were thrilled with our meal and our time here and we'll recommend this place frequently to friends.

Staff was friendly and attentive, but not overly so. Meal was delicious yet slightly over salted. Octopus appetizer was well worth it! Corn chowder could have had a stronger corn flavor - it was also extremely thick (more so than I prefer). Love the options for the vegetable plates. I would say a pescaterian is fine here, but not a true vegetarian, IMO. Husband LOVED his filet with marrow. If I were to suggest something, it would be optional bread for the soup/apps. Lots of wonderful sauce and nothing to sop it up with!

Wow! We were debating between curate and this restaurant..and I'm so glad we made this choice, as much as I love Curate. This is owned by the same people that run the Admiral. Amazing experience and so well executed. Highlights included the smoked mackerel, cauliflower with mornay, and a peach dessert to die for. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Parking was challenging. Wednesday evening, street parking was not available so I looked forward to parking in the gravel lot. Relieved not to have to navigate the stairs down to the dock. Would suggest closed toe shoes for walking through gravel lot. The restaurant is located in a rather unassuming converted industrial space that’s quite easy to miss. The atmosphere was wonderful when we walked through the door. Loved the brick & the wood. Lighting gave it a warm feel. The noise level was a bit high. The service and delicious food made up for the chatter. My entrée selection, a plate of four from the Produce menu was a good choice. Would highly recommend the salt roasted beets, truffle butter. Chocolate tart & coffee was excellent!

Loved this place. Great atmosphere -- fun and laid back and un-stuffy but still serious about food and cocktails. The winner of the night was the octopus starter -- perfect texture and interesting, well-balanced flavors. Both fish entrees (sole and skate) were delicious. The dandelion salad was so-so. (I kept wishing it had had a fried egg so the yolk could run over the salad, rather than those tiny hardboiled eggs.) I adore negronis and was underwhelmed by the barrel aged negroni. But overall we were very happy and would gladly go back.

July 30th our partyof 4 had dinner . I ordered a cocktail of Blanton's and Coke . When my drink arrived it was straight bourbon, no Coke and 4 little pieces of ice. When I told the waitress about it she became very abrupt and stayed that way the rest of our meal.My friend paid our check with his credit card and only when we arrived back home to settle accounts did we realize we had been charged for a glass of wine and a glass of beer that we did not order or get. Next day I went back to get a refund or credit and talked to a man named Brendan (sp), He called the manager and said I could wait for an hour or so or come back next day. I left contact info for both parties and Brendan said the manager would call me. Still waiting.

My finace and I had our first visit to The Bull and Beggar. We were excited to eat (and mostly enjoyed- brains aren't really my thing) the veal brains and ox-tail. Drinks were great, my only complaint was that the sauce the Filet was served in was salty and the marrow looked and tasted a little more like lard than marrow. My fiance's Grouper was the best I've ever had though- so overall we had a great experience!

I had been here several times before for drinks and pork rinds but have never been for a proper dinner. It started off well when we greeted by a friendly host (which turned out to be our server) and promptly taken to our table. Or server was very knowledgeable about the menu and offered up some suggestions base on our likes and dislikes. We ended up with the filet and grouper which were both excellently prepared and very tasteful. I will be back for sure!

We've eaten a number of times at Bull and Beggar since the opening and enjoy it every time. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a loft restaurant in New York or Chicago. The food is superb and we often order a number of the smaller plates along with dessert and skip the entrees. This particular visit was exceptional in that we saw the cast of a new Loomis Fargo Heist movie which is filming in Asheville. On our visit we saw Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig. The previous week Zak Galifianakis was with the cast having dinner at Bull and Beggar. If you arrive an hour or so early, it is worth sitting outside and having a beer next door at Wedge Brewery. The people watching here is second to none.

Apparently a new restaurant in Asheville in the River Arts District. It is tricky to find off of Paynes Way which is a dirt parking lot near the railroad tracks. It's adjacent to some interesting galleries and brewery -- all part of renewal area. Once inside, fun, funky, upscale interior with warmth and great service. Very attentive staff and management checking in etc. The food was fit for FOODIES - delicious, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Fun menu to choose from small plates, wonderful veggie sides (I had the salted beets that were excellent) and entrees. Great wine list, bourbons and beers. We didn't find this place on any of the 'tourist lists' and was not a recommendation at the B&B we stayed. Hidden treasure!

My husband and I visited asheville for his birthday in mid July. This restaurant was recommended by a bartender we had met earlier in the trip. He told us Bull and Beggar was hands down top 3 in Asheville. We couldn't agree more. We both had appetizers (butter bib salad and octopus) that were delicious. Our entrees were mouth watering (chicken and grouper) and we shared a peanut butter chocolate tart. We couldn't get enough! Our server was friendly and kept my water glass full. The food was AWESOME!! They have a short selection of entrees and a long selection of small plates. The cheese plate I had for an appetizer had nice size servings of 5 cheeses. I had the lobster roll which was much better than the one I had in Maine. I also had hushpuppies that truly rivaled the low country South Carolina one that I grew up on, but these were served with maple butter!

We really enjoyed our dinner at B and B. The menu may challenging for some in that there was a limited nbr of entres (4) but multiple small plate options. However, our meals (fish) were excellent. My understanding is the menu changes frequently, so the options would vary as well --note that none of the entre options that night were vegetarian. Service was fine, very friendly and attentive but not overbearing. This is a bistro-like atmosphere, semi-industrial in feel, with a good energy level. Be warned: The seating was a little hard! Given the proximity of the restaurant to Wedge Brewery, if your plans are for Friday night, expect a crowd for the Wedge's open air backyard party -- so, allow for potential parking issues but enjoy the crowd!
