Diner Reviews
  • "I've been in many places - large and small, fancy and shacks but I would rather eat at a fastfood instead of coming back here again. The place looks and feels like a community college food court. The food tastes in similar fashion as well. Or more specifically, most of it didn't taste like anything at all. Calamari were mainly breadcrumbs, main meals came out cold and the coffee we ordered never materialized. Took about 20 minutes to get waitress to come in and actually take our dessert order, which we immediately regretted - connolli looked and tasted like they were just purchased at the nearest gas station and were sharing the plate with brown liquid with the density of water and positioned as chocolate."

  • "The food was great. Service was great. Atmosphere is just so-so and bland but it's still a great place to eat."

  • "The menu is pretty basic Italian fare with a couple of red meat options, several chicken dishes, and pastas. The shrimp scampi and steamed mussels appetizers were delicious, but the only fish entree available was a grilled salmon. I would expect a bit more ambiance from a restaurant with $25 entrees, but the quality of the food itself definitely matched the price. Very convenient location if you're going to Staples Center/LA Live."

  • "I absolutely love Il Mare. The food is always great and the bartenders/servers are as friendly as it gets for downtown. It is close enough to dine at before an event at LA Live and just far enough away to not be crazy busy. I would definitely suggest eating here. "

  • "The food was great, service was good, and best of all it's BYOB! My girlfriends and I plan on making this a tradition at IL Mare."

  • "I love this down town restaurant. The food and service are great. The only downside is the noise level. Hard to hear conversations when the place is busy."

  • "Close to the Nokia theater so it's a perfect place to dine before going to a concert/show. Would recommend the BBQ chicken pizza. The staff was very attentive and friendly."

  • "Very tasty, good food, but not much from the ocean!"

  • "Positive: Garlic bread (though it did resemble Mama Bella) and the service. Funny guys who played off the energy with the table. Negative: The food, ambiance -Pizza was soggy. The second one was at best on par with Digiorno. -Pasta had nothing besides sauce and pasta (penne pesto and fettuccine). Lacking anything remotely called flavor. -Arugula salad lacked any freshness. -Bruschetta - Tomatoes were soft and mushy. First time I've said no to another piece. -Tiramisu - Frozen terrible-ness. -Decor has the feeling of a sterile cafeteria with terribly bright lights in some places and dim in others. Olive garden is better than this place. I should have judged it by the zero people there on a Saturday night. Better options in DTLA."

  • "I thought the steamed salmon and side vegetables (spinach and mushrooms) were excellent. We felt special to see a table had been reserved for us because of Open Table. Nice gesture by il Mare."

  • "A sure sign that you don't know how to cook is by over-using ingredients and this place does just that. They even managed to make a simple dish like bruschetta horrible by using too much garlic. Top it off with a waiter that was less than knowledgable and you end up with a bad meal."

  • "Went here before a hockey game at Staples. This place is fine. Everything at our table (different salads, a pizza, a few pasta dishes) was good to better basic italian food. I wouldn't go out of my to go here, but if I'm in the area and want good Italian food for a reasonable price, I would not hesitate to go again. Waitress and the rest of the staff were prompt, helpful and extremely friendly, and the food came out very quickly (I suspect precisely because they knew we were attending a game). Oh, and they start you off with some really good garlic bread. Very happy experience"

  • "Our table was not available, however they set up another table quickly. The food and service were both very good. Definitely recommend it (make a reservation!)."

  • "We had a salad and a pizza. Everything was great. I especially loved the high quality cheese on the pizza. I can't wait to go back. Great service and classy ambience. Energetic, but you can have a conversation without having to shout."

  • "My wife and I absolutely love this place! We go here at least once a month and have never been disappointed. The food is amazing! I highly suggest going if you have never been. It's a great place to go before any event at LA Live. It's close enough to walk and just far enough away to not be over crowded like all of the LA Live restaurants. Plus the food is 100x better. Enjoy!"

  • "This place is a glorified coffee shop--Marginal food, big tv in center of room, weird vibe, basic food. There are so many great downtown choices, but this one really isn't anything worth writing about."

  • "They try hard here. Waiters are very attentive. The food is good, but not happy with an $8 Caesar salad that was a little romaine lettuce, some croutons, and dressing with the consistency of hummus. Pizza is average. Beware of the pizza that has squash on it (not listed on menu. Good alternative when Wolfgang Puck is overbooked."

  • "The place was empty on a Saturday night of a big concert...first warning sign. The service was lacking. Our waitress could not explain the difference between two wines and when asked about how the spinach was prepared on the Filet Mignon she was hard pressed to provide a solid description. Maybe she was new and still learning the menu? The caprese salad was huge! Big chunks of mozzarella & tomatoes made it difficult to enjoy. The food was fine, nothing spectacular. After our food was delivered our waitress disappeared, not sure why since the place was empty. And this Italian restaurant was lacking any Italian staff. None, no waiters, cooks, servers, or host. Overall, a disappointment and I would not return nor recommend."

  • "Pesto pizza was super yummy as with garlic bread. Also had a great drink. Ambiance was ok just a normal restaurant nothing unique or romantic."
