A word from The Breakwater - Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa
"The Breakwater" name speaks to the heritage of our setting; the original breakwater was formed to calm Comox Harbour so loggers could form their bounty into booms for tugs to transport. Just up the shoreline, several ships were scuttled to create a breakwater. Today, those silent hulls serve as an iconic reminder of the perils that faced coastal pioneers. "The Breakwater" speaks of the restaurant's proximity to the ocean, as well as the rich history of the Comox Valley. We invite you to enjoy the warm atmosphere, friendly service, and fresh, creative West Coast cuisine in the Breakwater restaurant or on our patio — all with one of the best views in the Pacific Northwest. We're committed to bringing you the bounty of Vancouver Island. The surrounding waters are famed for salmon, halibut, sable-fish, shrimp, crab, mussels, oysters, clams and more. Our climate supports a vast range of vegetables, fruits, and herbs… to say nothing of the wild foods that pops up without anyone's helpContinued

  • "Fantastic food, great service and a nice atmosphere. Food presentation is beautiful and the quality was outstanding. Will definitely be back!"

  • "We ate here twice during our stay at Kingfisher and the food was fabulous and fresh both times. What was best was the amount of time in between courses-nice and long and we wanted more just at the time our next course arrived. There was ample enough food for my firefighter husband, which is what I often find gets skimped on at fine dining restaurants."

  • "The Kingfisher provides breathtaking ocean views and outstanding food. The staff at Kingfisher is passionate about food and this is reflected in the quality of ingredients, how/where they source their food and the beautiful meal presentation. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and enthusiastic about the menu. We look forward to our next visit!"

  • "The service and food was exceptional. The plate presentation was very appealing. A delicious appetizer starts you off on a great dining experience, the main course will leave you feeling full and satisfied but still wanting to try a dessert. I would suggest leaving a bit of room for a desert, it is the perfect end to a beautiful meal."

  • "The Valentine's Day Menu was out of this world! Everything was cooked to perfection, and the presentation was second to none! The wine pairings was wonderful, and what a terrific idea. The service was impeccable. Breakfast was equally as awesome, and the service here was terrific also. Dropped in for a 'snack' between spa treatments and here is where the Breakwater fell down. Ordered coffee and were asked if we wanted cream. Waited so long, I finally went and asked for it at the bar. Had to ask for napkins. The fruit bowl was excellent! The muffin looked great and was warm when it arrived. However, it was so dry, and hard after two or three bites, if was actually difficult to eat."

  • "We had a table for four and everyone commented that the both the meal and drinks were delicious. However, of the four, two ordered medium-rare meat... and it was definitely NOT medium-rare, but RARE! If it would have been my dinner, I would have sent it back... but they decided not to. The only complaint that we all shared was the portion size: for the price, a little more food would have been nice."

  • "We've been to the Breakwater several times, for lunch as well as for their special Christmas dinners. We have never been disappointed with either the food or the service. We make it a point to take our visitors to the Breakwater, and all have been impressed by the quality of the establishment. It is truly a gem on Vancouver Island."

  • "Food quality and presentation was excellent. Service was very good. Some serving sizes are a bit on the small side."

  • "Lunch for 6 one a visitor. The waitress- quite reserved and 'proper'. Difficult to hear her description of the specials. Two of us had the fritata. Two had the open faced shrimp... found this sandwich tasteless...one required extra sauce to make it palatable. The other ate half her sandwich. Two had the lox sandwich, one with fries. The large fresh cut potato fries were the hit of the lunch. One fritata (hold the chorizo sausage) and a garden salad (lots of veggies and delicious). The other fritata with sausage but was okay but both were surprised at the small size of the fritata. Lunch menu offerings need more flavour. None of us would make the drive ever again for lunch. Brunch on the other hand is well worth a return visit."

  • "food was good but over priced for the amount you get. I think that there should be more on the menu not a lot to choose from for dinner."

  • "If you're looking for a fine dining experience that's worth the dollars spent, then I recommend the Breakwater. The quality of the food was excellent and the water view lovely. Service was attentive without being over the top. The wine list (by the glass) seemed a bit limited, but the quality of the choices was fine. If you like martini's, the Earl Grey is very tasty."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our New Year's Day brunch. The selection was extensive, the food was very tasty and the service was attentive. I'm already planning our next visit!"

  • "A good though not extensive dinner menu. We ordered the ling cod for dinner and were not disappointed. Might have eaten there two nights in a row had their been more choices available. We did return twice for breakfast. The service was uniformly excellent and contributed to a memorable overall experience at the resort. A great view, even on an overcast day, fireplaces at either end. Definitely recommended!"

  • "Lots of choices on the menu. Large portions. Nice staff. Looking forward to coming back when the days are longer and we can enjoy the view more!"

  • "Although the holiday brunch is now buffet style for special holidays only, and not every weekend, the menu is diverse but not too large, and every selection is excellent with substantial portions. The view is always serene."

  • "Spectacular view of snow capped mountains over the water. Our server was very helpful with the menu. Raw oysters were amazingly fresh and delicious. Our party of 4 ate 2 nights in the restaurant and every meal was beautifully presented and the flavours were awesome. Beef tenderloin, ling cod, lamb duo and the Cowichan Bay chicken breast with pasta were our favourites! And affordable wines! The chef did an outstanding job of all our dinners. We had absolutely no complaints!"

  • "It used to be a special treat to have brunch at the Kingfisher. No more. I knew from their website that they were no longer offering a buffet brunch on Sundays, but thought I'd give the new menu a try. I had an omelette and I honestly think food I get at Smitty's is of higher quality. There was barely any ham in it, the eggs were overcooked and it was greasy. The accompanying pan fries were served cold. The waitress poured our coffee then left an empty coffee pot on the table and went MIA for about 15 minutes. You need to understand that I am not a very demanding restaurant patron. I have rarely ever complained about the food or service in any restaurant. I'm only telling you because you asked! In short, I was very disappointed."

  • "Really enjoyed the wine, the atmosphere was great!! Menu sounded amazing, and was very exciting and looking forward to a great meal. My other dinner guest enjoyed there meals, they all had the meat dishes. I went for the seafood capicollo, probably spelling this wrong. My seafood dish was "poor quality", the prawns tasted "moldy" meaning they have not been properly cleaned.... I was surprised. The seafood was very overcooked, and chewy, and not what I am used to receiving at a "spa dining experiance". Becasue I was with 3 ladies, and we waited for an hour and a half for are food, I wasnt going to send it back, instead I ate the clams and left the rest.... I had high expectations, and I was dissapointed..."

  • "The chef customized our menu choices to leave out certain ingredients that we were not fond of. This resulted in excellent food."

  • "We had great food at the restaurant ... the prices were a little high for my taste for what we received. I was also taken aback that we had to pay for the basket of bread and butter at the table... most restaurants give bread to their customers. the bill was high for what we had."

  • "My overall experience was fantastic. My server was very polite and knowledgeable of the menu and was patient with all my questions. The food was amazing as well. I would deffinetly re visit if I stayed at the resort again or was in the area."

  • "We had the Thanksgiving Dinner 3-course meal. Started with the beet and goat cheese salad--the goat cheese was lovely, thick and rich with a mild flavour. The prime rib with the garlic mashed potatoes and veggies was fabulous--and the horse radish was wonderfull (hot-hot, just so you don't get surprised). The place was packed and yet it was still quiet--just what we like--and the view with sunset to boot was stunning. The service was great. I'd love to go back and try some things from the a la cart menu."

  • "The Breakwater is a few kilometers out of town with a sweeping view of the ocean and the mountains along the BC Coast. Great service, superb seafood, lavender martinis - this is a real gem of a place."
