Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great, the drinks were unique and flavorful. Nice ambiance and personable service."

  • "Chicken was very dry. If you don't drink rum or beer you might want to think again about this. They have some local wines, but they are sad. My red wine not only didn't have legs it was lacking toes. We also had avocado and plantain spring rolls which were totally lacking flavor without the dipping sauce. Peas and rice were very dry too.I have spent lots of time sailing around the Abaco Islands where this dish is common and this wasn't even close to what it taste like when done correctly. All the dishes did taste fresh and the shrimp curry was better than the chicken although the shrimp were very tiny"

  • "We loved this place. The food had just the right amount of spice to leave a warm glow in your mouth. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The setting was urban without being cold. We will certainly be back. This restaurant was much, much better than we thought it would be before we went! We have been missing out on a great opportunity."

  • "Dined for the first time here with my husband on a weeknight for his birthday. Our server was friendly, prompt and quick to make recommendations. We decided to try all 3 courses on the drink list, they break the rum cocktails down according to the courses on the menu, and all were excellent. The Red Stripe prawns were especially tasty, we'll be back to try out more of the menu. Everything was on the salty side but that just made me want to drink more rum, so I guess they're onto something. Too warm for the patio in the summer but it looks like a nice spot for a cooler evening, we'll look forward to that in the fall. Happy to have this place in our neighborhood. Don't know what took us so long to try it but we'll be back for sure!"

  • "Great Jamaican style food and rum cocktails. Awesome place for a first date. Food is spicy."

  • "We had been to the 'old' breadfruit and we liked it. We hadn't been there in a while and we were pleasantly surprised. We're not bar people but if I were, I'd give the Rum Bar a shot. The food was wonderful, service was prompt and efficient and we felt very welcome. We will definitely go back."

  • "Nice, new restaurant find for Phoenix. The service was spectacular. The food was good but not great. Rice and beans a bit dry. Dessert a bit underwhelming. Will give it a second try. Drinks- rum drinks and coffees- super."

  • "If you are tired of deciding on common places to eat for Italian, Mexican, steak, burger, sea food, etc. try something new! Great flavors, consistent quality, and a fantastic selection if rum (get the rum flight)."

  • "Four of us went here prior to a concert. We had tasted food here at Devoured event a few years ago. The food was fantastic. The flavors through there rubs made the food extra special. We enjoyed: Jerk Chicken Salad, Scallops appetizer, Jerk Pork with Polenta, Street Jerk Chicken and the Prawns. I loved the rice and beans couldn't get enough. The drink menu is very interesting and we had Mojito, the punch of the day and the ginger beer drink. Everyone was happy and even ordered the two deserts. Very flavorful dinner."

  • "Love The Breadfruit! What a wonderful place to take my parents when they were visiting in town last week. Consistently delicious menu and drink selections. Thank you!"

  • "The theory of breadfruit is great but the experience was mediocre. The water was warm I got attitude for asking for ice water. Apparently everything on the menu is "the most amazing" dish the waiter has ever had..."

  • "We loved our cocktails and mussels appetizer, although it was a pretty small portion for the price we paid. Then, it took at least an hour for our entrees. The first 45 minutes or so we dealt, but then the waiter told us he saw them coming up in the window. It was another 10-15 min before they made it to our table (sitting in the window?). The annoying part was that he really didn't take any responsibility for it and made the excuse that he didn't have any control over the kitchen. Even if that were true (although as a former fine dining server myself, there is a certain point where it's totally acceptable to ask the kitchen where the food is), the way he said it was pretty off-putting. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our food."

  • "The owner was very unaccommodating for a group that made reservations days in advance. Tables wouldn't be out together for us, so therefore we were seated in such a way that he staff had to walk back and forth between our tables. Interrupt in our conversation repeatedly and we had to shout just to hear each other. Better customer service is needed. I do reviews of small businesses/restaurants and this review will not be a savory one. The food was good, but the poor concern from the owner (not our server) left a bad taste in our mouth and we won't be back. This review won't matter because it pertains to the owner, so I don't expect a change. Small businesses go under due to poor service directly from the owner. Just look at Club Central."

  • "So excited we found this Caribbean Gem... Service was awesome and the food was spot on!! We tried the small plate scallops and the small plate avocado and plantain spring rolls.. Both were seasoned and cooked to perfection! We might be dreaming of those scallops for weeks! For dinner we had the special which was an organic chicken jerk rubbed and BBQ.. The skin was so crispy and the bird moist and delicious! I can't wait to go back and try some of the other yummy menu items!"

  • "What a great touch of the islands right here in downtown Phoenix! Great food, great service (thanks Ryan for the great suggestions!), great drinks! Definitely try the punch bowl drink special and you can never go wrong with the chef's special of the day!"

  • "Very unique spot with outstanding food. All Rum bar and they even make their own tonics, tinctures, etc. The staff is very knowledgeable and did I mention how amazing the whole snapper is!"

  • "This was our third time for dinner at Breadfruit. It was my wife's birthday and we ate early before a concert. When we walked in we smelled smoke (the good kind) from whatever they had been smoking in the kitchen. The sea scallops appetizer are always wonderful. We had wood smoked mussels as another appetizer. They were great but there were only 10 small mussels. It was overpriced compared to everything else on the menu. My entree was a pulled pork served over Caribbean polenta. The meat had that same smokey taste we smelled upon entering. It was hands down the best pulled pork I ever had. That smokey flavor was better than I expected. My wife had salmon with jerked spices and a sweet glaze that she loved. And all washed down with rum.Yum."

  • "Great food, well prepared. Place was a bit crowded and noisy. Water brought to our table was tap water and not chilled. Although these are minor details, they would make this place even better."

  • "I had a great time at The Breadfruit. Being a Caribbean girl from New York, it has been a challenge to find authentic food, just like home. The food was traditional with a twist. Presentation was incredible and the food was perfect. I had the mackerel rundown. I was wondering how the saltiness would go with the coconut milk but it wasn't salty at all; it was perfect. My boyfriend had the jerk pork, which was smoked to perfection. The sweet potato pudding tasted like it was made at home. Our server, Scott, I believe, was absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend this place!"

  • "This restaurant gets a A+ in my book. The food is amazing and the cocktails are out of this world. Definitely not the typical Caribbean restaurant. The cuisine is of five star quality and I am humbled by the true craftsmanship and vision behind each dish. I am very impresseed."

  • "We had a great time at The Breadfruit. We had a 7:30pm reservation and walked right in. The place was pretty empty when we got there but was packed by 8:30pm. They have an extensive rum drink menu which were good, some too sweet for my taste! I ordered the pork belly and it was insanely good!! I would definitely recommend it. The other guests at the table had the jerk chicken (which was good but not amazing) and the jerk pork shoulder (which was very good). Our waiter was very knowledgeable and checked on us at just the right times. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a change of pace. One warning, it can be a little pricey, especially if your party is drinking!"

  • "My wife and I hit this small downtown spot to try something different, and we weren't disappointed. It's a small spot, and very crowded, so reservations would make sense. Crowded is a good thing as it shows how great the food and atmosphere are. We tried two dishes and shared, along with a small plate to start, and loved all the dishes we tried. For the small plate we did the prawns, for the dishes we tried the mussels and the pork guava, all were delicious. Highly recommend!"

  • "We travel to Jamaica every year and this was like going back to the Island. It was the best rice and peas I have ever eaten. The food is fabulous and the service is superb!"

  • "I was very impressed with The Breadfruit. Very informative wait staff. Great rum drinks. Fantastic flavors. I had the Smoked Jerk Chicken special. Very flavorful. My wife had the Pork Belly. Was melt in your mouth tender. We will definitely be back. I have to try the red snapper next time."

  • "This restaurant was truly a surprise and a treat. Creative drink menu was exceptional. The Carribean-inspired dishes FAR exceeded their menu descriptions. The pork belly and guava with butter bean mash entree was stellar. A+ "

  • "Great local spot in a desolate downtown area. If you're attending a conference at the phoenix convection ctr, Breadfruit is a must."
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "The food was very tasty and service was great but the price was really high and quantity/portion size really small. The appetizer I got was 12.50 and contained 2 scallops, about 2inches wide. "
    Dined on 5/21/2014
  • "Group of six came here - we were attending a conference and did not all know each other. The restaurant got picked off of Open Table website. All declared it a winner. The rum cocktails were excellent and the food was so flavorful. I highly recommend - if I lived in Phoenix it would be on my go to list to take guests or when I wanted a good dinner out. "

  • "If you're looking for authentic Jamaican food, then this is where you need to go. I ordered the salmon which was the freshest, most savory salmon that I ever had. Everything was excellent; highly recommended!"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "The food was bold, spicy, and perfectly prepared. My date had the jerk chicken, and it was almost too good to be real. I had the jerk pork and polenta, and will probably order it again the next time I'm there. The rum bar is as special as they make it out to be. I'm not really a rum aficionado, but Breadfruit makes me want to be. My date and I both had the daily rum punch, which had vibrant fruit flavors, and a spicy accent at the end. I also had a Fifth & Company, which was also excellent. So, basically, find yourself a designated driver and go there."
