Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful birthday celebration for a great lady! Our server, Tyler, could not have done a better job!"

  • "We had a gift card and that is what brought us to this restaurant for dinner. The food was very good and the crab puppies were a special treat. Although we enjoyed our dinner there and do recommend this restaurant, it is not so special that we would go out of our way to come back - note, we do not live in the area. That said, I can see how this restaurant would be a "go-to" place for folks that live in the area."

  • "We had a wonderful view at a great table. The food was above average and we had a very attentive waiter. We went with another couple and we had to talk very loudly to be heard above the racket. The open bar contributes to a very noisy atmosphere. I really would enjoy the restaurant more if it wasn't so difficult to converse there. It is a great place for Happy Hour. I will go elsewhere to spend over a hundred dollars for dinner."

  • "We were celebrating our 46th Wedding Anniversary. This was our first visit. We enjoyed the food, service and location. Our server Chris was great and very attentive. From the Sunshine Punch which he recommended to the caprese which had the freshest tomatoes, fresh and nicely plated salads to the crab cakes and filet, we were not disappointed. The cookie dessert and bread pudding were tasty. We would definitely return."

  • "Our experience was great! The waiter was great and the manager was fantastic. Great place for a special night out!"

  • "the view is the only reason to go. The food is mediocre at best. The crabcakes, were said to be LUMP meat but were definitely shredded crab. The prices are extremely high considering the level of quality. It is a beautiful location, but the food does not live up to the view. I will not go back but would recommend to visitors who want an unusual view of Richmond from the river."

  • "I had a great birthday experience with my family 5 adults and 2 children. Food, service, and view all exceeded expectations. This is a fun place to celebrate and we were treated like royalty."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "The food is mediocre and food choices are limited. The restaurant is extremely loud and service is fair. It may be great for an expensive bar scene. No our idea of a romantic dinner. Manager offered to buy one of our desserts to celebrate our anniversary. Great gesture! However, he didn't follow through. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT!"

  • "One of the worst meals we have had in Richmond. We wanted to go to Magpie (which serves incredible food with impeccable service) but our gift card only worked at the Boathouse. Food was McDonalds quality. Service was weird. We overheard other tables complaining. Really surprisingly bad."

  • "This place was awesome! I would for sure go back!!!"

  • "I had an incredible time celebrating a friend's birthday. We always have a great time at the Boathouse! The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. The food is delicious! The view is outstanding!"

  • "Great dining experience, but the noise from talking is very disturbing. Also depending on where you sit, the sun is almost unbearable."

  • "I've visited on many occasion and have had great service and meals. My mom was visiting from overseas and I brought her along with my boyfriend and some friends. However, the reddish-brown strand of hair in my crab stuffed shrimp was a mood changer, as I shared it with the other guests at my table. Needless to say, no one consumed any of my crab stuffed shrimp. The waiter was a little flustered, as he made several errors with our food order and the various checks provided. But all in all, both the waiter and management were accommodating. Will I be back? Yes -- because this was only one unfortunate experience in my many visits; and the staff was professional and courteous in addressing the issue."

  • "Made reservations. Asked if we wanted a bottle of wine at our table to greet us. Declined and that was it. Seated in the middle of the room. No table cloth, but 1/2 of the room had table cloths and empty tables. The waitress asked if it was our first time, but left us to figure the menu out on our own. The food was overpriced; payed a fortune for poorly cooked entrees-scallops not seared. I was worried they were undercooked. 3 SMALL scallops, 3 SMALL shrimp, and a crabcake with a few red potatoes and 4 spears of asparagus. BROILED? seafood $29. Total=$79. It was not tasty. Served by someone else, fine, but no one stopped by until the check and THEN small talk came from our server. Greatly disappointed. Bummer of an anniversary dinner."

  • "Have been to The Boathouse on many occasions, but had a friend from Brooklyn visiting Richmond. She had previously lived in Richmond many years ago and I was thrilled to take her to this fabulous location. The atmosphere is perfect for gathering with friends after work or having a Sunday afternoon drink on the open deck. We had the local tomato/mozzarella cheese appetizer, with perfectly ripe tomatoes. I had the shrimp and grits and she, the crab cakes. The grits/shrimp were seasoned beautifully and nice and buttery. My friend was loving the all crab meat cakes. Over all the experience was great!"

  • "It was a great experience and the staff was wonderful. The tuna was excellent but the peanut noodle weren't my favorite but still ok."

  • "My husband and I have always wanted to try the Boathouse, so when my parents were in town for the first time this past weekend, it seemed like a great opportunity. Because we live in the West End, we were able to show them a lot of the city on our way there, and the view from the restaurant was beautiful. The weather was perfect, so I wish we'd been able to sit outside, but we got the next best thing - the floor-to-ceiling glass doors were open, letting in the breeze and fresh air. My parents really enjoyed the ambience. Staff members were very friendly and helpful, and we all cleaned our plates. The Boathouse offers delicious seafood in a unique atmosphere, for a reasonable price. Highly recommend for special occasions and visitors!"

  • "I think the location and wait staff are the best part of our dining experience. Bryson was our server and he was very attentive and knowledgeable about specials and interesting tid bits about recipes."

  • "Our group of 7 had been looking forward to this outing for sometime and no one was disappointed. The prices for brunch were more than reasonable considering the meals we enjoyed. Service was good. I had the omelet which was stuffed with crab, lobster and veggies. Others enjoyed the waffle buffet and numerous other menu items and all were delicious. We felt lucky to have had such a gorgeous breezy Richmond day to wander out onto the deck for pictures of our cute group and our beautiful James River. A few of us made immediate plans to return for late afternoon drinks in the near future. What a great place to show off our lovely city. We are fortunate."

  • "The food is fresh, the James River views are amazing, and Tyler our server was excellent. Parking is limited, so expect to arrive at least 30 minutes to an hour early. The restaurant has valet parking which is $7.00."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to The Boathouse-Rocketts Landing in July 2013 so much I returned this year to celebrate my parent's 50th Anniversary. The food and service are excellent."

  • "My lobster was a bit lackluster. The table next to me received a beautiful, bright red lobster so I was a bit disappointed when my brown and charred one arrived. I am sure it was accidental but it was disappointing given that I had arrived and ordered before the other table. Kind of felt like they got my lobster. We started with the crab and artichoke dip and that was a solid winner. The bread was fresh and complimented the dip very well. I would go back but I probably will venture more toward the seafood pizzas and salads in the future, if I even order an entre. This place is more suited for drinks and light foods; great for after work or a place to catch up with friends."

  • "Everything about my experience was amazing from the service to the location to the food. My steak was overcooked but everything was so amazing that it wasn't worth bringing to my server's attention."

  • "Five in our party, the Lobster Bake, the crabcakes and the broiled seafood were excellent. However, the T-bone was disappointing - too tough and too much gtistle. Very little was edible. Service was outstanding."

  • "This is the second time I have been to this location and both times it takes forever for the service to get us our drinks and bring the bread in the beginning. We have had the same waiter and we always have to find someone else to bring us bread or get another drink. This time it was suppose to be for my husband and my birthday dinner with family. I was very disappointed in the service . I shouldn't have to look around for the waiter to take our order and bring more drinks. Overall the restaurant was good. Maybe another time with a different waiter might be better."

  • "Second time here, we should have known to just go for a drink. Steak ordered medium rare was rare, rare tuna was bland. Fish tacos were good. Service was polite and friednly but timing etc were unprofessional and unacceptable at the price point. Bar was very nice, view was great."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 31st Anniversary dinner at the Boathouse at Rockett's Landing. It's a no brainier in our selection of this restaurant because we have celebrated so many occasions here. The service, meal and ambience were outstanding. It's very difficult to select food from the menu in that everything at the Boathouse is delicious. Also, I would like to compliment the manager who came by to greet us. Our conversation with Jack Bettini, Manager, was quite impressive."

  • "Found this place thru open table very nice old building modified and restored. One thing that stop me for giving five stars is that the sun is in your face and the lacks of shades or blinds in their big windows makes the sun hard on you!"

  • "My husband and I found The Boathouse online while visiting Richmond for our son's freshman orientation. It was a gorgeous evening, and we were hoping to find a good outdoor table. And boy, did we. The restaurant sits high over the James River, with a sweeping view of birds, rowing sculls, and the city skyline. The food was exllent as well. We are looking forward to more visits to Richmond."
