Welcome! The Boarding House opened December 2012 and is led by Proprietor and Master Sommelier Alpana Singh. Our historic building, which dates back to 1872, features several distinct areas that a bustling bar area, two distinct private dining spaces, and a comfortable dining room located on the building’s third floor.

Enjoy a curated and thoughtful list of 500 wines from around the world that will expertly complement your dining experience. Guests will be immediately enveloped by our ambient dining room, which is designed for everyday dining with service that is detailed, hospitable and personal.

The wine bar is available without reservations and seating is per availability.

  • "Food was great. The octopus was tender and flavorful, and the venison was perfectly prepared. The tagliatelle was properly al dente with a light sauce. Service was generally good, although plates were cleared while some members of our party were still eating, and we had to ask for utensils at times. Oddly, the wine service again had problems. Our first and second choices were unavailable, although they weren't especially rare or boutique wines. I also noticed that some of the better selections from previous lists had been dropped from the current wine list. These are not good signs, especially in a wine-focused restaurant. It's not right to charge a $50 corkage fee if the wines offered on the wine list can't be delivered."

  • "I really loved the ambient although I was on my own for a business trip. I had dinner at the bar room, the architecture and the chandelier made of wine glasses really stands out. Good music in the background. The menu is quite fine with a good selection. I really enjoyed kinoa with lentils, crudo of tuna and the sturgeon. Maybe the main course took a little long to come out but the waitress really treated me very well and made a very good work to make me feel comfortable. The price is acceptable, we are downtown Chicago the competition is high but this restaurant really deserves a visit and when I will be back in the City this is one of the places on my list to visit again."

  • "I took my wife here for our anniversary as she is a foodie. The server was a bit quiet and not attentive with food and wine recommendations. We had to wait a few minutes for her to come and could barely hear her. The place was quite loud and full of conversation. I think it would be great to go with a group but not so much for a romantic dinner for two. We started out with the Merquez stuffed Calamari which was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. I ordered the salmon with fergola (sort of like Farro) which was fantastic. The wine, a savignoun (sp?) blanc, was disappointing but it was the cheapest on the menu ($40). Overall the food was great but i think there are better places."

  • "We had an absolutely fabulous dining experience. I like the Boarding house decor and atmosphere. Fun but upscale. Our service was wonderful and most importantly we enjoyed EVERY bite! The Boarding House salad was delicious and it was followed by their Seared Sturgeon dish prepared with artichokes, lentils and bacon and the Salmon dish prepared with honey glazed carrot and swiss chard. They were both DELICIOUS!!! (Yes we stole bites of each others meal!) Highly recommend and we will definitely be back!"

My boyfriend ordered the venison loin and said it was one of the BEST cuts of meat he has ever had. I had the salmon and it was very good. Service was ok. She didn't check in very often. We also ordered the carrot cake. Again, good, not great."

Food was above average but nothing that his the "wow factor." Worth a trip but maybe more for post dinner drinks if you want the crowd."

  • "This was our first time there and it was awesome. We met a friend at the bar an hour before our reservation. The bartender recommended a wine that was very good. It was a Thursday night and there was a lot more people then I expected. We had dinner on what I would call a balcony over looking the main dining room. The waitress was attentive, carefully explained the menu, made suggestion and answered all our question. I had the grilled flat iron steak and it was excellant. My wife had the half amish chicken which she loved. We look forward to future dining expiences at this restaurant."

  • "Went to The Boarding House for an anniversary dinner and was very pleased with my choice. We had the octopus and burrata as appetizers and both were delicious. For dinner, I ordered the scallops, which came with brussel sprouts, and was very pleased. My boyfriend ordered the NY steak topped with some kind of jam and potatoes. I'm not normally a fan of steak but his steak was so good that I'm still thinking about it! The waiter was very helpful in choosing a bottle of wine and recommended the perfect bottle based on what we were looking for. Service was great and everyone was very attentive."

  • "We were really looking forward to eating at a restaurant created by a master sommelier....the wine was good and reasonably priced but the food fell short. We ordered 2 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts. Something on just about every plate was messed up. Potatoes were over done, pork chop was REALLY over done, lamb chops were good but what ever else was on the plate was gross. I thought I was getting a mashed potato, what came out was grits witch would be fine but they were lumps with dry bits. Carrot cake was ok, I've had better. The chandeliers were cool, pop in for a drink and dine elsewhere."

  • "Went there on a Saturday evening, room not completely filled. 3 stars for service due to some uneven pacing; everyone very pleasant and courteous, but kind of long gap between initial intro (right after seating before we had a chance to look at drink menu) and return to take drink orders, then long gap between end of entree to dessert. Pacing from food order to main meal was very nice, however. The food was quite good, menu a little limited but standouts were the hen egg and polenta fries, the merguez-stuffed calamari and the scallops. Overall vibe was energetic, tables close to each other so not too much privacy but not too close that you couldn't have your own conversation."

The staff goes out of their way to make your evening enjoyable. The food was so delicious. Our table had several different things off the menu and not one thing was served that we would not have ordered again. I could not say enough about the great experience we had. For a special night or a fun time at the bar, it is one of those places you should not miss."

  • "We have been looking forward to dining at The Boarding House for some time based on being fans of when the owner hosted Check Please! on WTTW. And it was an excellent first time that did not disappoint. The decor with the wine glasses and wine bottles suspended from the ceiling was amazing - too bad we had an early dinner and didn't see them with lighting. The staff is friendly and knowledgable without being pushy or snobby. The wine list by the glass (we had a dry rose and bold malbach) and by the bottle is well curated. And the food was well prepared and flavorful (we had the tuna appetizer, steak, venison, and rhubarb tart). A return trip to explore the bar and lounge scene is well anticipated."

  • "Fantastic restaurant! My girlfriend and I had the Beets and Goat Cheese appetizer (phenomenal!) the Venison Loin, the Seared Sturgeon, and the Goat Cheese Blueberry Bread Pudding for dessert. All were fantastic and I particularly recommend the Venison. The Bread Pudding was orgiastic. The service was also too-notch. My girlfriend will drink 6-8 glasses of water per meal and we always measure the service by how long she waits for a refill. Her water glass was never empty! The hostesses were pleasant and accomodating, and our server were knowledgeable, professional, and personal. It is a bit pricier than most places, with the average entree costing around $28 ($21-$36, if I remember the range correctly). I heartily recommend!"

  • "Consistent excellence is the hallmark of this restaurant. Went with group of six and we all enjoyed the food, the service and the ambience. Everything from the venison to the flatiron steak to the scallops to the lamb chops were exceptional. Despite an intimidating wine list (page after page of choices) we were able to find a very reasonable wine that met our tastes. Service was first rate. Our waiter was able to describe the menu choices and offered recommendations when requested--even ranking them in order of his preference. We will definitely be back."
