  • "food WAS WELL PREPARED AND PRESENTED. ALL ITEMS WELL EXPLAINED AND OPTIONS WERE MANY AND VARIOUS FOOD TYPES WERE IN THE MENU. JUST COULD NOT MEET THE BOSS. OFCOURSE THE WINE SELECTION WAS OUTSTANDING. ONE OF THE CHICAGO'S BEST OUR GUESTS ALSO LOVED THE PLACE"

  • "We had an absolutely fabulous dining experience. I like the Boarding house decor and atmosphere. Fun but upscale. Our service was wonderful and most importantly we enjoyed EVERY bite! The Boarding House salad was delicious and it was followed by their Seared Sturgeon dish prepared with artichokes, lentils and bacon and the Salmon dish prepared with honey glazed carrot and swiss chard. They were both DELICIOUS!!! (Yes we stole bites of each others meal!) Highly recommend and we will definitely be back!"

  • "I was searching for a unique experience for my Brother's wedding anniversary. The eclectic, gorgeous decor and professional service and quality would be hard to beat even in Chicago."

  • "Just happened upon the Boarding House on OpenTable and was highly impressed!"

  • "Wonderful food. One of the most interesting and stunningly decorated places ever. A gem. Wine list not quite as good as when opened."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "Everything was good but not spectacular. The entrees we ordered were significantly better than the the polenta fries and octopus appetizers we ordered. My boyfriend ordered the venison loin and said it was one of the BEST cuts of meat he has ever had. I had the salmon and it was very good. Service was ok. She didn't check in very often. We also ordered the carrot cake. Again, good, not great."

  • "Surprisingly not a busy dinner spot but more popular for drinks. Half empty for peak dinner on a usually busy Thursday night but as the night progressed the place got more crowded for drinks. Food was above average but nothing that his the "wow factor." Worth a trip but maybe more for post dinner drinks if you want the crowd."

  • "my wife and I enjoyed a very rich and flavorful dinner at the Boarding House recently to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The food, from appetizers to dessert, was well prepared, expertly served and delicious. The wines completed the courses very well."

  • "Celebrated my one year wedding anniversary here. I work for a premier retailer and our number one focus is customer service. The Boarding House had amazing service from beginning to end. The employees were very nice and welcoming. The food was perfect from appetizer to dessert. I would recommend to everyone."

  • "Loved this restaurant. Beautifully decorated. Food was fabulous - especially the Tuna Curdo, lamb chops and cherry cobbler. Thoroughly recommend. Staff were delightful. The bar downstairs is great too."

  • "Our reservation was at 8, we were seated at 9pm. After waiting an hour no one even apologized just said that there was a 20 person party that took a long time to pay. Unimpressed with the lack of willingness to make us happy by buying us a round of drinks, or at least a formal apology for the inconvenience."

  • "My wife and I went here for our 20th Anniversary and loved it. Fabulous food and service. I highly recommend the venison. It was one of the best meals that I have ever had. The oatmeal cookie dessert was also very good."

  • "This was our first time there and it was awesome. We met a friend at the bar an hour before our reservation. The bartender recommended a wine that was very good. It was a Thursday night and there was a lot more people then I expected. We had dinner on what I would call a balcony over looking the main dining room. The waitress was attentive, carefully explained the menu, made suggestion and answered all our question. I had the grilled flat iron steak and it was excellant. My wife had the half amish chicken which she loved. We look forward to future dining expiences at this restaurant."

  • "Went to The Boarding House for an anniversary dinner and was very pleased with my choice. We had the octopus and burrata as appetizers and both were delicious. For dinner, I ordered the scallops, which came with brussel sprouts, and was very pleased. My boyfriend ordered the NY steak topped with some kind of jam and potatoes. I'm not normally a fan of steak but his steak was so good that I'm still thinking about it! The waiter was very helpful in choosing a bottle of wine and recommended the perfect bottle based on what we were looking for. Service was great and everyone was very attentive."

  • "We were celebrating our anniversary when we visited the restaurant. Every employee we encountered provided superior customer service. The food was fantastic. We look forward to dining at the restaurant again soon! P.S. The beet salad starter was absolutely one of the MOST DELICIOUS items I have *EVER* eaten!"

  • "We were really looking forward to eating at a restaurant created by a master sommelier....the wine was good and reasonably priced but the food fell short. We ordered 2 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts. Something on just about every plate was messed up. Potatoes were over done, pork chop was REALLY over done, lamb chops were good but what ever else was on the plate was gross. I thought I was getting a mashed potato, what came out was grits witch would be fine but they were lumps with dry bits. Carrot cake was ok, I've had better. The chandeliers were cool, pop in for a drink and dine elsewhere."

  • "Went there on a Saturday evening, room not completely filled. 3 stars for service due to some uneven pacing; everyone very pleasant and courteous, but kind of long gap between initial intro (right after seating before we had a chance to look at drink menu) and return to take drink orders, then long gap between end of entree to dessert. Pacing from food order to main meal was very nice, however. The food was quite good, menu a little limited but standouts were the hen egg and polenta fries, the merguez-stuffed calamari and the scallops. Overall vibe was energetic, tables close to each other so not too much privacy but not too close that you couldn't have your own conversation."

  • "The place has awesome decor. Every unique, vibrant and fun. BUT for the price, the food is a little lacking. and very salty. if we were difficult people we would have sent the food back."

  • "We found this place by a happy accident through OpenTable. It is BEAUTIFUL on inside, but not pretentious. One would feel comfortable casually dressed or dressed up. The wine list is extensive. Had the salmon, and friend had the PorkChop and we were so pleased. Will go back again every time we are in Chicago."

  • "We went to celebrate a birthday at the Boarding House and everything was perfect. It does not happen to often when it turns out to be a perfect evening. The staff goes out of their way to make your evening enjoyable. The food was so delicious. Our table had several different things off the menu and not one thing was served that we would not have ordered again. I could not say enough about the great experience we had. For a special night or a fun time at the bar, it is one of those places you should not miss."

  • "We have been looking forward to dining at The Boarding House for some time based on being fans of when the owner hosted Check Please! on WTTW. And it was an excellent first time that did not disappoint. The decor with the wine glasses and wine bottles suspended from the ceiling was amazing - too bad we had an early dinner and didn't see them with lighting. The staff is friendly and knowledgable without being pushy or snobby. The wine list by the glass (we had a dry rose and bold malbach) and by the bottle is well curated. And the food was well prepared and flavorful (we had the tuna appetizer, steak, venison, and rhubarb tart). A return trip to explore the bar and lounge scene is well anticipated."

  • "Very good service , but very expensive. you need to have more healthy choices."

  • "Fantastic restaurant! My girlfriend and I had the Beets and Goat Cheese appetizer (phenomenal!) the Venison Loin, the Seared Sturgeon, and the Goat Cheese Blueberry Bread Pudding for dessert. All were fantastic and I particularly recommend the Venison. The Bread Pudding was orgiastic. The service was also too-notch. My girlfriend will drink 6-8 glasses of water per meal and we always measure the service by how long she waits for a refill. Her water glass was never empty! The hostesses were pleasant and accomodating, and our server were knowledgeable, professional, and personal. It is a bit pricier than most places, with the average entree costing around $28 ($21-$36, if I remember the range correctly). I heartily recommend!"

  • "Consistent excellence is the hallmark of this restaurant. Went with group of six and we all enjoyed the food, the service and the ambience. Everything from the venison to the flatiron steak to the scallops to the lamb chops were exceptional. Despite an intimidating wine list (page after page of choices) we were able to find a very reasonable wine that met our tastes. Service was first rate. Our waiter was able to describe the menu choices and offered recommendations when requested--even ranking them in order of his preference. We will definitely be back."

  • "Try the octopus appetizer just to say you did. Amy, our server, was very knowledgeable & helpful. The ceilings in both bar & restaurant are GORGEOUS!"

  • "Menu was good. Service was outstanding. Wine list is best I have experienced. Price in dining room would make this a restaurant for special occasion. Bar menu may be a bit less."

  • "This was a great choice for our anniversary dinner. The well-earned reviews did not disappoint. The building and decorating are fantastic, the drinks and service were excellent. We had the tuna crudo app which was amazing, the goat cheese and beet salad was good, but not special. I had salmon and my husband had sturgeon, both dishes were great, portions were perfect. In the dining room, the tables are a little close to others which detracts from the romantic feel of the room. Overall, I would recommend for a nice dinner out without breaking the bank."

  • "We went there for our anniversary and we had a very nice dining experience. We dined on the third floor which is their main dining room. We had a very reasonably priced wine which was terrific. Yes, there were many expensive wines on the list, but we ask the waitress for a recommendation on a lower priced wine and her choice was spot on. Our appetizer, beets and goat cheese, was just amazing. Entrees for both of us were nicely done and tasty. I would recommend this place to anyone"

  • "Great place for Dinner or drinks. Atmosphere was upscale without being stuffy. Loved the design elements of the dining area and bar. Service was very attentive, food was great. Met with an old friend and spend almost 4 hours in the dining area and bar and never felt we were being pushed out."

  • "We brought our son here to celebrate his 21st birthday. The food was outstanding, of excellent quality and presentation. The menu allowed my son to be adventurous and try some new things. The wine selection was outstanding, and the ambiance was lovely. To top it off, they presented my son with a birthday dessert that was fabulous! This is my second time at the Boarding House - I previously came with a group of friends. Both experiences were wonderful and I will keep coming back!"

  • "Nice atmosphere with good food. Great wine selection, attentive wait staff, but long wait for appetizers (and we were only ones in the place at the time)."

  • "The wine list is great. Service was so incredibly slow. I had to get up from the table and ask the waitress to take our order."

  • "It was ok. Nothing amazing. The food was solid, but not well thought out. Fennel that totally over powered the raw tuna. Regular oranges instead of blood oranges as stated on the menu. The server was good, but the food runners clearly didn't know the table numbers. We got offered desert before our second appetizer hit the table. Venison was really good, best thing we had. All in all it was ok, but my socks were certainly not blown off. "

  • "I overall enjoyed dinner at the Boarding House. My friend was late arriving and the staff was very accommodating despite how busy it was. They were courteous and friendly. The wine list was impressive. A bit pricey, however. If you are one who is familiar with wines, you too will notice the extreme mark up. Aside from that, the food was delicious. I had the scallops. They were cooked perfectly. The oatmeal cookie dessert was good, but not exciting. We sat in the mezzanine. I think that is why the noise level, for us, was low. That's a nice intimate area. "

  • "The food was solid. The ambience was outstanding. Service at the table was great. The only glitch was the door staff. We had a party of six and one was running late. Instead of sitting the group of five at the table and directing the late-comer when he arrived, the door staff made the five people stand at the desk for 15 minutes. It felt awkward and more than a bit of attitude from the desk personnel. Traffic in Chicago can be difficult at best. Making us wait like children, set a negative vibe before the evening really began. Once we got past the door staff, everything was good. With so many great food choices in Chicago, I would probably not return to The Boarding House with a group larger than two people arriving together."
