My wife and I dined at The Boarding House to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with "happy anniversary" and we probably heard that from 3-4 others during our evening there. The staff was beyond attentive and our waitress (I wish I could recall her name) was comfortable, knowledgable and beyond helpful. She added quite a bit to the enjoyable experience. We had the salmon and Berkshire pork chop and several dishes compliments of the chef. All were cooked to perfection, well seasoned and very well portioned and plated. We had an amazing experience at The Boarding House and will definitely return again soon.

Our cauliflower soup was excellent. My lamb chop entree delicious - especially the roasted gnocchi. Waitress was excellent in helping with our wine choice. Unfortunately the seating plan is not to our taste. Too tight quarters for us. This really takes away from the dining experience. Plus - please walk around and check tables before open. We always have to deal with the wobbly table and the poor employee on their knees fixing it!

We ordered martinis and had to send them back as both had really funky taste. Server was a bit off putting and kept saying she was not upset that we had problems - as if we cared what she thought. The food was just ok. Have eaten here several times before including a wonderful meal during very busy "restaurant week". The food, cocktails and wine have always been great but this time was not even a good experience. Will give it another try as it has been a favorite neighborhood restaurant but just one more try.

We live just a short walk away but only now gave The Boarding House a try. What a pleasant treat. We had imagined it was only for the under 40 crowd since the main level is totally filled with the vibrant, young set. Dining on the third floor, however, was a delightful venue. The food was outstanding and we could have an easy conversation with our friends.

Entertained guests from France here. They very much enjoyed the lovely ambiance and the food. The lamb and the sturgeon were both big hits. I was surprised at the poorly trained service, given the price range of the restaurant. They rushed us to order and then the waiter left the table unattended (except for the water server) for long periods of time. They cleared the plates of several people while others were still eating. And finally, they plopped the check down in the middle of the table as soon as we were served dessert and coffee. Maybe appropriate at a pancake house , but not for this level of dining.

We were greeted and asked to wait a few minutes, arrived a little before 5pm. Bar opens at 4:30pm. In the bar area hundred of wine glasses hanging from the ceiling, an impressive display. We then were asked to take the elevator to the third floor. The elevator doors open and it's a WOW moment. We were seated by a not very friendly server, she seemed rushed, why I don't know, only one other table with people. She didn't make suggestions for wine. She Strongly Suggested The Sturgeon, it was the most disappointing of anything we ate. Maybe the chef told her to push it. I would possible try again.

Went here for our 7 year anniversary and it was wonderful. Very reasonably priced, the only way you could tell we did not pay the usually amount for an anniversary dinner was by looking at the bill (half of what we normally pay). The service was wonderful. Never an empty glass all courses timed perfectly. Food was to die for. I had the venision and it melts in your mouth. Wife had the scallops and said they were the best she is ever had. Ambiance is superb, so well decorated. Every one said Happy Anniversary from the two hostess to the server. Will definately be returning.

Went for our anniversary and couldn't have chosen a better spot. It is just lovely. The beautiful Alpana Singh was everywhere that night: a very hands-on owner. Had to discourage my husband from hugging her after our memorable night :) Patrick our waiter was the best: so expert with his wine suggestions. I had the vegetarian mushroom cauliflower dish: one of my all time favorite veggie dishes in my 40 years as a vegetarian. Spouse had the venison and he loved it. This is our new go-to restaurant for special occasions. We live in the South Loop and try to frequent more local restaurants, but the Boarding House is worth the cab fare! Highly recommend!

Out server was VERY snobby!!:( AWFUL service!! The bus boy was the nicest, most helpful one! I could say more..but NOT worth it!:(Not to mention she took care of another table ordering drinks wayy more than us when we spent $300 on food! Just because we didn't order drinks has NOTHING to do with coming over seeing how our food was, seeing if we needed anything, being courteous & friendly...?!!! My gosh! My husband and I went here to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary and we couldn't be happier! The attention to details was one thing that was different about this restaurant and so many others: the Welcome guest greeted us as "(my name) of course, Happy Anniversary!" then walked us to the elevator, the restaurant greeters also welcomed us with the same line and on the menus it read "Happy Anniversary! Cheers!", followed by two champagne glasses on the house and amazing, friendly service. Though it is an elegant place, you always feel welcomed. The food was outstanding - Burrata for an appetizer, and for main entrees the Sturgeon, the Octopus and the Squash Risotto - everything was delicious! Plus window seating. Unforgettable evening!

The appetizers are limited and unusual, so there is nothing for "meat and potato" type of eaters. The entrees are a little more normal but still not a big selection to choose from. We had the flat iron steak and scallops, which were both fantastic. Our waiter was the best, he made my birthday celebration very special. The restaurant and people are very pretty!

Found Boarding House on OpenTable as a Diner's Choice and had a client dinner there. It was fantastic. Excellent service, food, and wine. We were particularly pleased with the server's knowledge of the wine list, and how he read our table. We weren't rushed in the least, but certainly not too slow - it was like he was taking appropriate social cues as to when to approach us for our various ordering stages of the meal. The food was exquisite: we shared stuffed calamari, burrata, I had the pork chop and oatmeal cookie. Delicious.

Sat upstairs in the dining room. Great wine list, some great by the glass selection and great list of bottles. The food, though, seemed a bit tired and execution was a little uneven. My octopus salad was too salty but otherwise nice and my scallops were solid but the fact I ordered scallops means I thought the main course options were pretty stolid. Service was a bit uneven- ordered a bottle of wine when I ordered the food but it didn't arrive until well after my appetizer did... Great space, great wine though.

Enjoyed the evening at Boarding House; wait staff was very good (we had a corked bottle of wine and she handled it very well) and food was terrific. They were also great at accommodating diner preferences (gluten free, dairy free). Only thing that gave me a 4 star vs 5 star was the noise level. Due to high ceilings and sizable room, our group of 6 had to yell to each other across the table.

The food was exceptionally good. Service was slow - our first course didn't come until half an hour after we ordered and there was also a long delay between courses. I don't like to be rushed, but this was too slow. The waiter apologized and brought us two sides for the table. They also brought us each a half glass of a different pinot noir than the one we ordered to try. I thought it was a good way to makeup for the slow service. My husband thought the venison was among the best he's had and my vegetarian pasta was delicious.

There was a little communication issue between our waiter and the Kitchen regarding our appetizers so it took a little longer than anticipated. The waiter noticed and let the manager know. The manger brought the appetizers to us personally, apologized, brought another appetizer and comp'ed them all. What a great reaction to a small slip up. Food was spectacular and we would go back in a heartbeat. Well done, well done.

"Congratulations" are in order because both Ms. Singh and our city can boast an instant classic. I love nose to tail; house cured charcuterie and exotic small plate dining as much as anyone but it is so reassuring to see that meticulous yet comfortable fine dining isn't far away. My dinner was a delicious beet salad and perfectly prepared lamb chops and everyone at our table were pleased with their dishes as well (which was nice since half of us were celebrating birthdays). I was most impressed, however; with the jaw-dropping decor and the attentive (but not smothering) service. The wine list, of course, is spot on and the Malbec and Sancere at our table were perfect matches for our meals. A Bib Gourmand (at least) is not too far away.
