Diner Reviews
  • "The service and food was excellent. My wife and I have been going to the Blue Ox for years now and they continue to exceed expectations."

  • "The Blue Ox is hands down the best restaurant in Lynn. My family and I ate there on Sunday for the first time. I had the suggested red wine, the pear and goat cheese salad, followed by a cup of clam chowder (delicately spiced with Tabasco sauce), rounded out with the lobster tacos. Everyone loved their meal. Our waitress, Dawn, was pleasant, attentive and knowledgeable, and made the evening extremely enjoyable. We look forward to eating there regularly now that we discovered the best restaurant in Lynn."

  • "I live in W. Mass. I did a bit of homework and was in Lynn for an event. One of the most delicious burgers , bursting and oozing with all types of flavors, textures (aioli truffle oil and gorgonzola......celestial), Lobster Tacos...hit the 5 out of 5.....great blend of lobster , avocado and other spices.............Very, very good food.............and drinks and fantastic service.....polite, professional, quick, gracious and courteous................kind of like finding a needle in a haystack now a days."

  • "Our waiter asked us at the outset to put the whole order in at once so the kitchen, which would be busy, could prioritize. Apps came quickly, dinner almost 45 minutes after the last app had been cleared. The waiter was unapologetic and did not communicate the delay. The good was very good, but not good enough to be worth the wait. Also, it was a hot night and the ac was not working in the room where we were seated. They did not tell us that and no one every apologized for patrons' obvious discomfort."

  • "I am never disappointed. I enjoy eating at Blue OX although not as often as I would like The salmon is my favorite and my go-to choice every time. The appetizers are also a favorite and have regularly picked the seafood (crab cakes, calamari, lobster tacos). Everything is fresh and prepared to order. Our waitress remembered that I had requested no-salt added to my food. She was very attentive and my grandchildren enjoyed a few laughs. I am looking forward to coming again and maybe try one of the hamburgers."

  • "I LOVE the Blue Ox...hands down my favorite place for special occasions ! (I'd rather stay home that go out and have mediocre food.) The Ox rocks !"

  • "We took my mother here for a great meal on Saturday evening at 7:30pm. We prefer the bar side of the restaurant and had a lovely table. Chowder and Tuna Tartare starters were awesome with homemade chips and extra bacon in the chowder. Seabass special, steak frites and the cod fpr our mains. I LOVE the summer cod over risotto...it literally tastes like summer on a plate. Drinks all around (though they no longer carry an orange vodka for the Mama's martini, but we subbed in raspberry and it all worked). We are regulars at the amazing spot in downtown Lynn. The food and service are on par with any "downtown" Boston establishment and the chef/owner has an amazing industry pedigree to back up his on point food and beautiful restaurant."

  • "Excellent food and service as usual. Matt is a great chef. The prices seem to be creeping up especially with the wine and drinks."

  • "Second time at this restaurant and second time it did not disappoint! Waiter is extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Home made hummus with warm pita is delicious. Their rosemary French fries smell as great as they taste! And everything is fresh. I had fresh sea bass that was cooked perfectly! My only constructive comment on this dish was there was a little too much going on on the plate - wasn't necessary! The fish held its own, cooked to perfection!"

  • "I have been to The Blue Ox more times than I can count; guess I sahould have reviewed sooner. Whether it's for cocktails, apps, or a full 4 course meal (including the two best apps everyone should get-Fried Pickles and Tuna Tartare, and the most amazing dessert of Sticky Toffee Pudding with Cinnamon Ice Cream), I have never been disappointed. Kudos to Chef Matt for creating an outstanding menu that appeals to many pallets. The quality of food and presentation as well as taste in perfection. Blue Ox also have very knowledgable and friendly staff who are able to recommended the best dishes and perfect wine pairings. I recommends this to anyone and everyone, which is why I tend to bring anyone and everyone there!"

  • "The Blue Ox is always reliable...don't know anyone who has ever had a bad meal there. We often go, four women, but this time there were three couples, husbands and wives. There is a good selection of hours d'oeuvres...in fact, I had two hors d'oeuvres for dinner and they were both delicious. They do not have my preferred brand of vodka, but I can make do because the drinks are generous. Hard to get a reservation, for good reason."

  • "The Blue Ox is one of my favorite restaurants north of Boston. The simplicity of the menu and decor make it all about the food. The food is wonderful! A lot of the food is locally sourced and it is evident--fresh and healthy. I am so happy that the chef has really made a huge success of his restaurant. The staff all seem to love working there, and there was not one thing I could suggest for improvement--all good!"

  • "I had heard good things about the restaurant, but my experience did not live up to them. When our drinks arrived, my martini was not very cold. When I asked the waiter for ice, he appeared annoyed. My companion and I split an order of fried calamari. They were tender but not very flavorful. My companion ordered baked cod which she told me was excellent. I ordered a bone-in rib eye which was poorly trimmed and had more than a little gristle. I pointed it out to the waiter. He took a look at my meal and generously offered to take the dish off the tab. However, he explained that the chef told him that a bone in rib eye is EXPECTED to have gristle. Yikes! For desert, we split a crème brulle. It was excellent! Bottom line - just OK."

  • "The food was absolutely delicious as expected. The scallop special had me wanting to like my plate clean. The other three people with me were happy with everything that we ordered. The noise level as with most newer restaurants is louder than I am comfortable with. As we had a late reservation it was more pleasant at the end of our meal. The wait service could have been more attentive, skilled, pleasant."

  • "Went here on a first date and the vibe was awesome. The waiters were great the food was outstanding. We lost track of time and before we knew it it was 12 and even though they close at 10:30 they didn't bother us or ask us to leave. Great experience!"

  • "Great food as always! Lobster tacos!!!! Maybe would have liked one additional fish choice!"

  • "The calamari, that ubiquitous dish so often badly done, is exquisite here. Rushed to the table straight out of the fryer, the fat ultra clean, the red and yellow pickled peppers crispy and vibrant with just the right hit of vinegar, utterly delicious, and the sweet rings and tentacles fresh, fresh, fresh. Oh My God. It was so good, we swooned. My husband worked at his side of mashed as if it were a dish of ice cream. It was about as rich. He loved it. "

  • "Our sons birthday and he could choose any resturant. He chose the blue ox. As usual the staff was great, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was comfortable. Waiters and waitresses are informed on all meals they're offering and will customize as you like. We have been going to the blue ox on a regular basis and have yet to have anything negative to say. On the occasional lazy night we will do take out and that is just as good as the sur down meal. I think the owners and staff have nailed it. They know what people want and that's what they give them. To those that haven't tried it do your self a favor and make the reservation. You won't regret it!"

  • "You can not find a better place outside of Boston and they can hold their own with any of Boston or Cambridge's top restaurants at a fraction of the cost. The hot and dirty martini has no rival and the seasonal menu with a respectable Gluten Free selection makes it fit to bring all your foodie friends! They have plenty of parking on street and in the Eastern Bank as well as valet. We like to do pastas as apps along with a few apps of course, followed by one of their delicious entrees. Well worth the ride into Lynn to experience a true gem!!"

  • "Refreshing! Satisfying! The Blue Ox, located in two connected store fronts, is refreshingly hip without overdoing it (no attitude). The lightly-battered calamari appetizer with vinegar peppers and marinara sauce began a very satisfying meal of sauteed sea scallops and a hanger steak with a port wine reduction, sauteed asparagus and hand cut fries. The scallops were moist and flavorful and the steak perfectly medium rare. The overall service was quite good, making us feel that the staff were glad we were there. Our friendly, knowledgeable server patiently answered my many questions (prompted by dietary restrictions) about the menu. Bottom line: excellent food, friendly, efficient staff, pleasant atmosphere. • "If your looking for a quieter dining experience request a table in the room away from the bar. Bar room too noisy to hold a comfortable conversation."

  • "Went late on a Thursday evening. Place was busy. Creative cocktail list - excellent use of local artisans liquor. Wine list was good, but not a lot of choices for glasses. Food was cooked really well, nice presentation, and prompt service. Had the lobster scampi special and asked for light garlic. They did a great job keeping the sauce flavorful with lemon and other seasonings. Partner has the steak frites. Spot on cooking for the meat and the fired were crisp with a nice rosemary scent. Dessert was am awesome toffee pudding. Sat by the door and it was a little cool - but other than that the experience was great. "

  • "Many of my friends raved about The Blue Ox so we finally went. Everything was delicious from the lobster tacos to a duck special appetizer to the main courses of steak, chicken and mine which was seared tuna served over a delicious risotto with pistachios. Also, the drinks were very good! I would definitely go back!!!"

  • "We had heard about this restaurant many times and finally put it on our schedule to go. After tasting the appetizers salads and main course we were amazed we hadn't tried this sooner. The food is phenomenal! Starting with the sweet butter for the bread all the way through the main course it was a great meal."

  • "this was my second trip to Blue Ox. The first was spectacular, food, service everything was great. I left thinking that Blue Ox had to be one of the best restaurants in the Boston area. This last visit sort of cooled my opinion a little. Perhaps they are getting too busy too fast (a common problem for good restaurants) or perhaps it was just an "off day" but the experience though still good was not "knock your socks off" good like my first visit. I would still recommend it to friends but before I go over the top about it, I will have to go back again to see which Blue Ox is the real Blue Ox. "

  • "Our second visit to the Blue Ox was just as great as our first. The Crab Cake and the Tuna Tartare apps are amazing. The Pork Tenderloin and the Salmon were both cooked to perfection. We will continue to visit, it is highly recommended."

  • "You don't have to go to Boston to find a great restaurant! The Blue Ox is a happening! I have been several times now, and each time the meal has been outstanding! Try the lobster tacos! Delicious!"

  • "Our table was ready upon arrival. Wait staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating. Our waitress Dawn was an absolute doll! Funny, knowledgeable, quick and attentive without being intrusive! Food is fabulous and cooked to perfection! We will continue to frequent the Blue Ox!"

  • "When you have to shout across the table to your dinnermates, a restaurant has crossed the line from an "energetic" noise level to just too much noise to have an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, that's the Blue Ox these days. Combined with notably skimpy drink pours and spotty service, it's just not worth the food here anymore."

  • "Always a great meal at Blue Ox started with Tuna Tartare, then the Goat cheese ravioli, finished with cheese cake for dessert. Matt, Charlie and the rest of staff all do a great job!!! Cant wait to go back !!!"

  • "I saw a great review of this restaurant and their lobster tacos on a daytime morning show while visiting Boston and decided to dine here. However, when I arrived, they were sold out of the tacos and burgers O_O. It was most likely a result of the daytime shout out, but I was disappointed as I drove 30 minutes for the tacos. I chose the chowder and wings instead, both of which were great. Maybe next time I can give a higher rating as I feel they should have planned accordingly for the extra business. Service was good and the manager gave me his name so the next time I visited I could call ahead and he'd put some lobster aside for me. Hope he'll remember my name. ;)"

  • "My husband and I took my 90 year old mother to the Blue Ox on Mother's Day. I requested a quiet booth and told them we would be celebrating her birthday. We were escorted to a very NOISY TABLE in the bar, and were squished into a corner. It took about 10 minutes for anyone to come over and acknowledge us. I ordered a crabcake, which was grossly overpriced, and inedible. It was filled with a small amount of flked crab, and extremely spicey. I rated the food good because my mother and husband enjoyed their meals. They had the chicken and salmon. For the amount of money you pay at the Blue Ox you could go to any fine restaurant and have a classy, pleasant experience, and not feel as if you paid double for an average meal."
