A word from The Blake House
Designed by the renowned architects Knox & Elliot and built in 1891, The Blake House is one of the last standing heritage structures in Toronto mixing late 19th century Victorian and Second Empire architecture. Its first owner the Honourable Edward Blake was the second premier of Ontario and leader of the federal liberal party between 1878-1887 . He was also the founder of the law firm known today as Blake, Cassels & Graydon. At that time, Jarvis street was a tree lined boulevard of stately mansions as displayed on our wall stencils and pictures. Leading Canadian families such as the Cawthras, Masseys, and Gooderhams were among Blake's neighbours. The home remained in the Blake family until 1917. Today, Old homes have been restored to their past glory while new high rise developments have added a contemporary edge. In the same vein, The Blake House invites you to take in the history while sitting on our sunny patio having a local pint or inside by the original wood burning fireplaceContinued

  • "We were in TO for a medical appointment and needed to find a nice restaurant to eat. Being Seniors we could not see ourselves eating a whole 8 oz of prime rib each and we asked if we might split the dish and the waitress obliged. The staff must be the envy of every restaurant. They we very friendly and courteous . We would recommend The Blake House to any age group. We were early dinners and as the evening progressed the place started filling up with people of all ages. Wonderful!!!! Seniors in the city"

  • "We where visiting toronto for the weekend. I had read some reviews about this place and decided to give it a try. Well I'm glad we did. The service was outstanding. When we arrived our table was not ready so they set us up with a seat at the bar. I was very impressed with how fast the bar tender took our order and stayed on top or our drinks when we needed another. As we where waiting for our table the manager had ordered us an appetizer on the house because the party before us was taking longer than expected. We couldnt believe how attentive the staff where. The food was great and throughout our meal everyone was extremely nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend this resturant."

  • "There is a nice comfortable feel to the place, though I could do without so many tv screens around (though I suspect a lot of their clientele is there to watch sporting events). I have always enjoyed the food here, and this visit did not disappoint. While I order a simple half chicken with veggies, the meal still stood out. The chicken was incredibly moist, and the vegtables were cooked to perfection. My co-dinner got the chicken pot pie, which he said was good, but not great. My biggest issue was that the service was mediocre. I understand if someone is having a bad day, but you should try not to let it show to your clients. Also, we had a large group sitting beside us that were incredibly loud, though not much you can do about that."

  • "once again the food was great ! sat in the booth by the front door, and got a blast of cold every time the front door opened. but that was minimal. reasonable prices as well, did i mention that the food was great ! oh ya i did ! food was great !"

  • "We just found Blake house while looking thru the binder in our hotel room and we were not disappointed! Excellent and variety of food, huge portions and it wasn't ridiculously expensive. Wished we had found it at the beginning of our trip."

  • "It's a small place but they've done a great job of using their space so that we didn't feel crammed while dinning. The menu had an excellent selection at affordable prices. For this kind of place I thought it would have been more expensive so I was happily surprised when I ordered the night's special and it only came out to $18. I really enjoyed the ambiance as well; we went for dinner and it suited the evening perfectly. Thanks to our great server and manager who were very personable and willing to accommodate our unusual requests regarding special packing of our left-overs to make it more convenient for commuting."

  • "Great location - for theatres, downtown, etc. Public parking right next door and very reasonable for downtown! Varied menu and food was very good with a very friendly and helpful staff. Loved the fireplace at the bar area."

  • "Made a reservation for a date during Winterliscous ... but unfortunately, when we arrived there was no table reserved for us. Although the food was good and the atmosphere was pleasant, waiting and waiting at the bar for a table when you had a romantic date in mind certainly puts a bit of a damper on an evening. All told our meal was average."

  • "I made a reservation 5 days in advance, but when we arrived we were seated at a bar style table in an area that was basically in the foyer, not even in the formal restaurant area. We almost left. - Food and service were quite good though."

  • "Our first time dining at the Blake House. We would most certainly return there. Service was friendly and first class. Mussels and fish and chips were excellent. Did not enjoy the chowder though, it was more like a stringy, vegetable soup."

  • "I wish I could rate this restaurant based on the quality of their food (this site made giving the food a rating mandatory) But after having a 'confirmed' reservation, and showing up not only on time but early, we were told that we would have to wait for a table. After 30 minutes of standing in the doorway we decided to leave. We saw our names on their computer screen. But that didn't seem to matter. We paid for parking and stood in the door for 30 minutes. Don't even bother to make a reservation there."

  • "We originally booked lunch on a Sunday during Winterlicious. The day before our reservation I got a call to confirm and also explain that they don't do winterlicious on weekends. We were disappointed but decided to go for lunch anyway. The restaurant is an old house that has been transformed into a restaurant. It was nice, a bit rustic and the tables were a little too close together (we had a conversation with the people next to us regarding their lunch) I ordered the fish and chips, my husband had the club sandwich, my daughter had the eggs benedict, my other daughter had the wakey wakey eggs and bakey (brunch was on) and my aunt had the roasted vegetable omelet. We all enjoyed our meals, and service was friendly and prompt."

  • "This was my second visit, and I'll be back many times. A beautiful Victorian mansion with pleasant pub décor, good food and great service, at a reasonable price. I'm lucky to have The Blake House in my neighbourhood!"

  • "I heard good things about The Blake House. I went for Winterlicious 2014 and was underwhelmed by my experience. In the beginning, I had high hopes: the bread with garlic butter was delicious! Next came the vegetable soup with a piece of crostini, which was okay. I ordered the salmon with rice and kale. The salmon and rice were both undercooked. The salmon was still edible but the rice was grossly undercooked to the point where I couldn't chew it. Dessert was creme brulee which was also average."

  • "The Blake House is a wonderful place to dine. Great food, excellent service, beautiful space. My family and friends come from out of town to join me for brunch. We keep adding new people to our group because they all want to share the great experience with their family & friends. Can't recommend The Blake House enough."

  • "I'm not in the neighbourhood very often. But the Blake house is where I go when I am. Good food, great patio in the summer, real Toronto."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "External Settings: An old looking house sitting quietly by the road. Not too grandiose @ first glance, exquisitely finished entrance, maybe during the summer there will be patios open? First Impressions: Got seated pretty quickly, didn't like the fact that it's so close to the bathroom but then there was a screen projecting a fireplace, this made us all happy and sleepy. The finishings on the walls were archaic in nature, the tables were well positioned and not too crowded despite that we were in a group (6 people). Staff: Friendly from beginning to end, didn't rush us and took care to listen to our needs. Food: Had the salmon, it was a little overdone but the spices were delicious. The chocolate mousse was awesome!"

  • "The staff was amazing and so attentive to our table's satisfaction. The food was pretty average though, something you could easily whip up at home without trekking out to the area. This would be a stop by on your way home type of pub, not a destination."

  • "I enjoyed my overall experience at The Blakehouse. The food was brought to my table promptly; however, I found the air inside to be too cold. My friends and I would prefer a more mild to warm temperature seeing that is was so cold on Saturday. When we arrived, it was nice that we had the restaurant to ourselves...it almos felt like a private function. I imagine 3pm is one of the restaurants slower times. I will recommend this restaurant to friends and family in the future."

  • "My fiance and I went here this new years eve for dinner, they had a preset menu for new years that was only $35 per person. Portions were very generous and food was good for the most part... some things were just okay but overall we enjoyed our meals... the restaurant is divided up into areas so that there is a bit more privacy which was really nice. It has a really nice aimbiance to it that made the place anything you wanted it to be, we had a romantic dinner, but looking around it had groups, a pub area on the other side and some casual diners too, all fit in with the place."

  • "The menu was a bit of a let down, which was unfortunate because I liked this place a few years ago. Even the complimentary bread didn't get finished, which is unheard of with my group - it was peppered, which wasn't popular. Flavours were just not there. The salad was heavy on oil, with just a hint of vinaigrette. Everything was okay, but nothing was good. Desserts weren't finished because they weren't great. The place was full of kids, which was strange for what I'm used to from the neighbourhood and not what I expected from the look of the place. Not a failure, but not a meal any of us will remember."

  • "Overall great place, comfortable atmosphere and great for a family Sunday brunch as they have something on the menu for everyone. French toast, poutine and French onion soup were excellent, I hear the brie and chicken sandwich was awesome as well. Staff were efficient and friendly thanks for a great sunday brunch!"

  • "Although it was really busy, being the Christmas season and all, my friends and I were really impressed by this place. It is a beautiful restaurant complete with working fireplace. The service is excellent, even when it is jammed. The food was amazing!"

  • "Perfect for a low maintenance mid-week dinner. High end pub fair without a side of pretentious. Cozy place that has a wonderful wood-burning scent (there's a fireplace in the bar). Would definitely go back. Looks like they have a great patio for the summer as well."

  • "Hi there, I booked our get together at your location as a means of remembering days ago - I met up with a group and we all went to jarvis Collegiate and the atmosphere was one of nostalgia and comfort. Great job. The mussels were a little gritty but otherwise all of the food was great! Will be back again soon!"

  • "I've eaten at The Blake House for brunch, lunch, and dinner. My experience is always a great one. Tasty food, excellent service, knowledgeable and friendly staff, great ambience that suits both casual and more sophisticated dining, and a wonderful place to eat outside on the huge patio in the summer or inside on a winter night. Even if the restaurant is very busy, I never feel rushed to leave quickly after paying the bill. This is one of my local favourites, and it has never disappointed me."
