A word from The Blackbird
The Blackbird has just moved from Black Mountain NC to downtown Asheville.
We are now open and serving both lunch dinner and brunch!
Our menu is Modern Southern with a "nod" to tradition, fun, vibrant and all locally sourced. Our Farm to Table menu changes seasonally with many daily specials. All desserts made in house including our fresh daily ice creams. Our new space is "handcrafted modern" with contributions from many local artists even the tables are made from local pecan wood! We are right downtown at 47 Biltmore Ave on the ground floor of the new Aloft Hotel. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Have passed the restaurant numerous times but have never even thought of going in due to the contemporary (ugly) hotel that its in. It really is a pleasant surprise. Food was excellent with fair prices. Nothing that we ate was disappointing and the scallops were really great"

  • "Have been to this restaurant several times. The food is always good and it has a nice feel with the windows that open up to outside. It makes it not seem so cramped since the tables are a bit close together. Overall good service, good food and nice place."

  • "Dinner at The Blackbird was a surprising and a terrific experience of Southern style food. We are not meat eaters, so I want to mention that both the salmon with peach salsa and the snapper with lemongrass were both great. I heard that the coconut cake is to die for too. A window seat provides some interesting people watching."

  • "The Black Bird was downstairs from our hotel, The Aloft, and we met friends there for our first Asheville dinner. I had an angus beef burger topped with lobster! It was delicious. It was also $18, but worth the price. My hubby had duck and loved it. We both enjoyed locally brewed beers with dinner. Beautiful restaurant and yummy food."

  • "My party enjoyed the evenings specials. The food for fresh and amazing! The waitress was quite patience and attentive as she walked us through the menu options and responded to questions. This is definitely a place we will frequent while in the Asheville area. Highly recommend!"

  • "Although selection was limited it was very good.....no room for dessert but wait staff was fabulous!"

  • "The peach salsa could have had more flavor and pizazz. Food was good, not overly imaginative. I would try this restaurant again."

  • "Best food and great views of the city! The drink list is great and most local brews. Excellent cheese board and delicious appetizers! The snapper was superb. Especially delicious were the mashed potatoes with goat cheese. Yummy!"

  • "Always a good choice--creative selections with a Southern flair in a pleasant setting. Windows open to the street with interior decor modern. For brunch we had Lobster Benedict, biscuits and gravy, and an omelette (party of 3). Each was delicious. Staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. French press coffee service is a plus. Will return."

  • "The restaurant is adjacent to the Aloft Hotel so parking was relatively easy - not always true for restaurants in Asheville. The restaurant had open windows which was great for the mild temperatures. The atmosphere was loud - not sure how loud it would have been with the windows open. The crowd was definitely energized and restaurant was full. Wait staff were very good. Food waiting time was average - I get the impression we should linger over dinner. Soup, salad, fish (trout and grouper) were excellent. Risotto had a good flavor - maybe a touch tough for my tastes."

  • "Great atomosphere. Service was good. Mine dish was excellent. My boyfriend's however was not as good. They were out of lobster tails. Served the whole lobster and was told it would be cracked open and ready to eat. No need for apron. NOT the case. It was a mess and parts were unedible in my opinion. He is very good at eating that kind of food but had I been served that I would have sent it back. He was disappointed with the overall meal as a result of being told one thing and served another."

  • "The service was great. Our waiter was very knowledgable. The overall feel was great. It was a cozy but open atmosphere. The food was amazing. Me and my wife will definitely go back."

  • "The food here wasn't bad but it did not wow me at all. A decent wine and beer selection, but there are many better restaurants in Asheville. We sat near a window which, unfortunately, was a gathering place for a number of flies. It wasn't unsanitary but not particularly appetizing either."

  • "Had to send back fish but service was outstanding. Quality products prepared simply. Would have liked a bit more flare to the sauce on my fish. Red wine Demi was great."

  • "Food and service was the best we have experienced in downtown Asheville"

  • "Excellent Southern-style food served promptly by friendly waitress. Restaurant is centrally located in the bottom of the Aloft Hotel in downtown Asheville. Not the greatest ambience or decor, but still a nice place to dine."

  • "There were 3 of us, all seafood lovers. Even though we had a 6pm reservation, they were already out of the striped bass catch of the day, a bit disappointing. They did have fresh catch of red drum so we all went with that with different choices of sauces/sides. All were pleased. I thought the peach salsa on mine was exceptional - it's peach season here. There was confusion on our wine order, the bottle that was brought and opened was not the one we ordered, about $15 more expensive. We did not notice until we all had some and decided to let it go but not sure whether it was intentional or not. The owner is a dessert chef- save room for dessert! Ordered 2 and shared.... Coconut Cake and Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Ice Cream. Oh My!"

  • "Food and service are always wonderful at The Blackbird. Though it can be a little pricey when adding cocktails and/or wine to dinner, we still think it is well worth the money. If we are dining with friends we try to go early, as the restaurant tends to be very noisy when it fills up. When the weather is nice, we really enjoy the fact that the big windows open completely up to the street. It is fun to people watch, and occasionally banter with folks on the sidewalk. The Blackbird has a great neighborhood feel to it, right in the middle of downtown Asheville!"

  • "Our waiter Brent was exceptional attending to our every need. The steaks were perfectly prepared and the lemon thyme risotto that accompanied the red snapper was delightful. I highly recommend this downtown gem."

  • "Food was mediocre in my opinion and quite pricey. None of us were blown away by it. Decent sized portions. Very loud and they put us at a high top table crammed in the corner that was very uncomfortable. Probably wouldn't bother coming back."

  • "We were visiting Asheville and went to Blackbird on the recommendation of a work associate's Godmother. We owe her a big thank you. Blackbird was a great find. The location was convenient, the server attentive w/o being annoying, and food very good. We started with sharing a dz oysters and the cheese board. The former was ok but the latter was outstanding; local cheeses with a great chutney. I went w/ the wild Alaskan salmon with bearnaise and my wife went with the vegie plate. Both were outstanding. We would definitely return when in Asheville again."

  • "The Blackbird has become one of our favorite restaurants in a city of outstanding restaurants. The service is outstanding; cocktails are great; and the food seasonal with something for every appetite. Appetizers are large enough to share; two would be a meal. We were a group of six and we had a choice of a bistro table, which I find very uncomfortable, or a table with a small wall/column beside the two end seats. Not the best seating."

  • "Love this restaurant and I have since they were located in Black Mountain, NC. Open street side windows allow for uniteruptted views, but also let in a lot of the vibrant downtown scene along with its incumbent noises. Not a big deal, just that diners should be aware and/or request a table away from those windows."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "I'm surprised you don't have an option under category two for just......"good food for dinner", unless you're using fit for foodies as that item. You list "great for brunch" and "great for lunch" however."

  • "My parents and I enjoyed a long, European-paced, three-course dinner at The Blackbird. For the appetizer, we shared the meat plate, featuring a fresh chicken pate. For the entree, the Wild Alaskan salmon was fileted just a few hours before I arrived. It was perfectly seasoned. For dessert, the flourless chocolate Grand Marnier cake was divine. The ambience was wonderful - great in the summertime! Large windows were opened, and warm, fresh air and the gentle hum of people on the streets entered the dining room."

  • "The waiter (AJ) was on top of his game... A good salesman ...Always recommended the higher price appetizer/entree/drink etc when asked...can't blame him comes down to money/tip...Food was ok nothing great especially for the price..."

  • "The food and service were quite good, but the restaurant was loud and our table in the middle of the room emphasized this. Will probably try it again one more time, an evening during the week when it will hopefully be more quiet."

  • "Everything from the appetizer to the dessert were great and cooked to perfection. Staff was attentive, friendly and professional."

  • "We each had a different fish selection: trout, grouper, and one w/ which I was not familiar -- red drum. All were good but the red drum was actually sweet & tender. Will order again. Also recommend (if on the menu) the pheasant & the Korean ribs. Ask to sit w/ Stanley; a consummate server."

  • "We went with a party of six, ages ranging from 20's to almost 80. Service was warm and friendly, right on time. I almost always order the Vegetarian Farm Plate because it actually has vegetables on it. Seems like the vegetarian option in many restaurants is rice or pasta heavy, but Blackbird's is all seasonal fresh veggies, prepared inventively. I'm not vegetarian, but sometimes like to change it up. The rest of the party ordered fish or burgers and everyone was happy with the preparation and quality of the food. I wish we had had room for dessert because that darned coconut cake is to die for."

  • "It was a hoppin' joint Saturday night but we did not feel ignored. Excellent service by Stanley and great wine recommendations made us feel pampered. An adorable young, young man kept our water glasses filled right on time & the food, as usual, was wonderful. It seems they have added more steaks to their menu, not something I typically go there for, but there are still plenty of other amazing options. I will never stop advocating for the pheasant that I had upon my first meal there (& a couple of other times) nor the Korean ribs. If on the menu those are not to be missed!"

  • "My prom date and I went to this restaurant on Saturday, May 31st, 2014. We had a lovely evening, despite having to move tables to permit a larger party to enter the dining room and have space. This didn't really both us though. The service was great, and there was constantly someone refilling our glasses or asking us if we needed anything. We had a beautiful seat by the window, easy for people-watching. However, if you're uncomfortable with people being able to see or hear you while you're eating- stay away from the window (which has no glass pane). I ordered the duck and it was very good, but my date had the "surf and turf" burger- which was served with some weird, small french fry-like crisps. They were messy, and not very filling at all."

  • "I recently had a birthday celebration dinner at Blackbird. I thought the restaurant was lovely, great open breezy windows, and fun people watching. I don't mind paying for a good meal, but did feel for the quality of the food it was very overpriced. I had the ribeye, it was not seasoned well and difficult to cut, even with my steak knife. The Vidalia Buttermilk mash side was thick and gluey. The pear salad and bread for the table were excellent. For dessert we got the mocha mousse cake on the walnut crust, absolutely fabulous. My companion got the Mahi Mahi catch of the day and it was ok, a little over-cooked and not hot enough, but the risotto it sat on was fantastic. Skip the steaks, try something else, but check it out. "

  • "Found Blackbird on a whimsical search of OT. We were there early on a slow night. The food was good especially by local standards where I felt a chef's reach often exceeded their grasp. It was slow so I can't judge how well they perform under pressure but the crew I encountered stuck me as professional, competent and capable. I would go again. BTW - though they share the building with a hotel they are not affiliated. "

  • "Wow ! What a great place . We saw all the diners eating while we were walking to our hotel . We decided to give it try and it was delicious ! The local cheese plate was exceptional as were the local meats and in house desserts . Definitely a must if you are in Asheville !"

  • "We were a 6 top that went on Sunday for brunch to celebrate my birthday. The food was OUTSTANDING! The biscuits and gravy with a fried egg was off the charts amazing! Several people at our table got the lobster benedict which they also said was outstanding. The only complaint was that we practically had to do jumping jacks to get our servers attention to order alcoholic beverages at noon and to get refills on our water and tea."

  • "Enjoyed a lovely brunch on Sunday. Food was outstanding. So many creative choices on the menu, I will have to re-visit. Omelet size was perfect and prepared just right. I love how this restaurant is set up. The window are so large you feel like you are outside without the wind and noise of being on the street."
    Dined on 5/25/2014
  • "The food was generally good - at least it's a decently creative menu. Bartender was knowledgeable and helpful. Other service was poor; restaurant was not even that crowded and server took far too long to come to table, take initial order, then appetizer order, then dinner order. The whole experience just felt like it dragged on unnecessarily. Wait staff needs to work on timing."

  • "Although I had made a reservation on Open Table, no one from Blackbird let me know that the restaurant would close. So my friend and I met at the appointed time, outside Blackbird, but there was no one there. Not professional. "
