A word from The Blackbird
The Blackbird has just moved from Black Mountain NC to downtown Asheville.
We are now open and serving both lunch dinner and brunch!
Our menu is Modern Southern with a "nod" to tradition, fun, vibrant and all locally sourced. Our Farm to Table menu changes seasonally with many daily specials. All desserts made in house including our fresh daily ice creams. Our new space is "handcrafted modern" with contributions from many local artists even the tables are made from local pecan wood! We are right downtown at 47 Biltmore Ave on the ground floor of the new Aloft Hotel. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a variety of dishes and all were good! Upbeat atmosphere; attentive service. Enjoyed sitting by the window "

  • "We had dinner here passing through Adheville. The place was pretty packed so we thought we were in for a real treat. In the end it was just a standard american contemporary restaurant. I suppose we were slightly disappointed seeing the hive of activity. Do so many people aspire fir average food?"

  • "Lovely, little loud & crowded contemporary decor restaurant located close to the end of downtown. Menu: Pretty good selection. Portions are appropriate enough for you to eat and consume a desert later. It took 30 minutes to get the app. I had fried green tomatoes with shrimp (extremely bland) and the evening special of grilled salmon over an asparagus risotto. Nothing to squeal over. But I didn't leave hungry. Overall we spent more time waiting for food than actually consuming it."

  • "Was just visiting Asheville/Hendersonville area and relied on other reviews of this restaurant on OpenTable. As is usually the case, we were not disappointed with an OpenTable restaurant. In the heart of funky Asheville, the ambience with the big, front open windows was great (although still a little chilly at night). Food was presented nicely and tasted great. Started with the crabcakes and ended with something different for me - just the roasted vegies for entrée, but they were delicious. The thee other dinners were equally good according to my guests."

  • "Great was to enjoy my 29th birthday! Glad I got to come here while I was in town!"

  • "Oysters (raw &fried) were the best ever! Great selection of entrees; halibut was outstanding. Charceuterie board was delicious w/ rave reviews especially for the mustard. One person ordered duck and loved it even though it was pretty rare. Second time we have gone there--it may become our favorite for out-of-town guests."

  • "We started with a dozen of delicious Chesapeake Bay oysters on the half-shell. Great price. Brought our own wines, two French. Food was absolutely delicious, and our server was very articulate and thoughtful. We'll go back just for the excellent service! Everything we ordered was great. Coconut cake - perfect ending!!!"

  • "Excellent in every respect! We had drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious. Service was top notch, even on a busy Friday night. This was our first time there and we'll definitely be back! Thank you, Blackbird, for a wonderful evening!"

  • "The food was prepared beautifully. I had the Catch of the Day which tasted exquisite. The jalapeno cornbread was disappointing. heavy tasting and served barely warm. The wine excellent. The staff professional. The ambiance was nice. Intimately darkened and no loud music. The bar was beautiful. I made reservations on line and requested a seat by window overlooking Biltmore Ave. Great people watching. When we arrived they sat us there. Suggest- Very pricey wines. Suggest a couple less expensive wines on the wine list to choose from. Other than that, everything else was perfecto! Overall pricey, will go back, but only on special occasions."

  • "We thought the food was fantastic and the desserts divine (try the coconut cake, it was amazing). Other reviewers complained about the noise, but when a restaurant is popular and full, there is going to be noise. We will go back and would definitely recommend!"

  • "We first visited this restaurant when it was located in the Cheshire Village. We liked it then so we wanted to try it again now it's moved to down-town Asheville. The food was excellent. We started with the Butcher's Board for two, which was a perfect size and offered a great selection of meats and cheese to get the taste buds going. I then had their Mussel special, which was delicious and my husband had their Pork Chop special which he said was outstanding. be aware, the Pork Chop is large. We had a wonderful waiter and the atmosphere was great. We sat by the window and watched the lively Asheville night life pass by."

  • "Our experience at the Blackbird was wonderful. The food, service and ambience all hit the right notes. As first time visitors to Asheville, we couldn't have made a better choice for one of our dining experiences."

  • "Very convenient to the aloft. Special enough experience for visiting with friends we dont see often."

  • "This menu is a bit limited, so diners might want to check it before booking. The wine list is just o.k. but the location is terrific - covered parking which is a big plus on busy weekends! Open to the sidewalk on nice days."

  • "During our first visit to Asheville we hit many good places to eat. But on our last night, my birthday, we were a bit warn out on exceptional casual and wanted to amp things up a little. We weren't looking for fancy, just more special. The Blackbird was a perfect choice. We loved the large windows that opened up to the street, the service was truly exceptional, and the menu gave us a variety of options to choose from. The environment was lively but not scene-y, The Blackbird is a rare gem in downtown Asheville."

  • "The appetizers were outstanding as were the entrees and coconut cake. We dined twice over the weekend, and we'll be back!"

  • "It was so noisy that we could not talk--or even yell! The table was crowded for six of us--we could barely get into and out of our chairs. Bar chairs were uncomfortable. All in all, we could hardly focus on the food or the good company. None of the six of us would return. ps. It was SOCON week which probably had stirred up the crowd."

  • "this was our first visit to Blackbird since their move from Black Mountain,...... the food was fabulous and fresh as always.....and we were very pleased that we could still enjoy their Coconut Custard Cake! yummmmmmmmy!"

  • "One of the first things was an awesome light fixture: a single bulb encased in a rusted metal "nest." The look was great. Then the blackbirds flying and soaring up on the walls carried out the theme. The environment was very noisy and we were crowded against another table of two clearly enjoying their tryst. But our table was quite wobbly and we were reseated at another table. This resulted in a very long wait: first for a server and then for our wine. I had tilefish with a bay scallop sauce and my husband had the strip steak. Both of our meals were delicious and beautifully presented. Our waitress was apologetic as she offered a complimentary dessert which we declined, and then comp'd the wine. Worth a visit."

  • "Our dining experience at blackbird was wonderful. I had the house salad which is light with a mustard vinaigrette followed by the fried green tomato shrimp appetizer and my main course was the surf and turf burger which is a hamburger topped with lobster. Our overall experience couldn't have been better. Lighting was just right. Tables weren't too close together. Server was on point. Wine and beer list was good. I just wish I had saved room for dessert as there was a coconut cake listed that sounded worth trying. We almost went back our second night there and wish we had."

  • "The food and service were very good. However, the noise level was extremely loud. It was difficult to carry on a normal conversation. Not enough noise baffles were installed and too many hard surfaces bounce the sound waves all over the place. If you don't mine loud noise and repeating your conversation then it is the place to go."

  • "We had a great dining experience here on 2/22/14. Two of our group ordered the rainbow trout and were very pleased. I ordered my "usual" pork chop which was excellent as it has been each and every time. One person ordered two appetizers in lieu of an entre and had plenty to eat -- she got the shrimp and grits and a second shrimp dish. Would highly recommend this to anyone coming to Asheville or anyone who lives here -- no negatives at all!"

  • "The Blackbird has the best food and service in all of Asheville. We had the best time there and the chef Bobby is a true master of his art! Having dined in many fine establishments across the U.S. I can honestly say that this place is the absolute best that I have ever experienced. The Blackbird is outstanding! Highly recommended!"

  • "Chose because I could get a 10 p.m. reservation on a Saturday. Arrived 10 minutes late and received a call checking on us. We were not the only diners, but we were last at the end, except folks at the bar. The waiter didn't rush us though service was expedient. The dish I wanted most wasn't available. Got my second choice - steak, grits, and, my highlight, roasted brussel sprouts (fabulous!) The steak was decent and grits, a nice accompaniment. Very tasty. One slice of mocha cake was very generously sized and excellent! (I HATE paying $8 for a tiny two-bite offering.) Server was friendly. Not much atmosphere (unless you call a few candles atmosphere.) There was a slight chill every time the door opened, and we were farthest from the door."

  • "Honestly, I have never had a bad experience here. The service is top notch as is the food. I was excited to see the butcher board on the menu, (house crafted sausage is noteworthy)! This and the raw bar have been my favorite appetizers. We had the Mahi Mahi, Sorghum Chicken, and a bouillabaisse with lobster that I hope to see again! There are always seasonal specials that never fail to please. If you like to people watch, get a seat by the window. If a romantic secluded dinner is what you are after, there are lovely booths under the "flock of birds' wall in the main dining area with candles, soft light and tasteful bud vases. P.S. The desserts are amazing! I'm going to get the nerve up to do 'dessert for dinner' here one day!"

  • "We visited on Valentines night and were hoping for a proper experience. Immediately we were hit with surly female "greeters" who were more concerned with the fact that they were working on Valentines than greeting anyone. Our server was pitiful. He showed up to take our orders just as we sat down and seemed put off that we gave an appetizer order only as we hadn't had a chance to decide on the main meal. He only returned after the apps had arrived and kinda didn't want to take our order. BTW, our drinks were refilled once all night after we took it upon ourselves to run down another server. Food itself was not bad, but for the price(around $115) much much better can be had all over Asheville."

  • "We always try the cheese board and crab cake to start , it's one of our favorites the cheeses are always amazing as well as the crab. The lamb and ribeye were cooked to perfection and you can never go wrong w the signature blackbird martini. To finish it off we had the champagne for two dessert it was to die for. Thank you for a romantic and amazing valentines day."

  • "We sat at the bar while waiting for our table. Tried some good drinks, excellent wine, then ate fabulous meal, including dessert and coffee. Can't say enough about the food, good place for foodies!"

  • "We enjoyed a Valentine's date at the Blackbird with a special menu. Parking in the hotel is very convenient. Although we showed-up early for our reservations there was no wait. Candles were lit and service arrived timely. The dining room and bar are very elegant. Neighboring us, no one was pushed for table turnover. The mood was energetic and the food, tantalizing. Duck breast was cooked to request and served already cut into pieces - who could ask for more! Chocolate dessert with sparkling wine ended the evening nicely."

  • "Went for Sunday brunch--what a great choice! Our food was freshly prepared, attractively presented and delicious. Service was attentive and helpful without being intrusive. The setting is contemporary and entertaining with a view of the street activity. Asheville has many choices for Sunday brunch--Blackbird is a great one for a more "upscale" dining experience."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here twice, both times to be left ignored for long periods of time. It's a shame because the food is really good, but the service is bad. And apparently you can't swap mashed potatoes for shoestring fries on a Saturday night, according to the server one of the few times we did see her. I hope they get better service to match the food."

  • "Having eaten several times @ The Blackbird I can easily recommend it. Particularly wonderful is their pheasant, tho' not always on the menu. I have tried almost each of their entrees and there's not a loser on the list. I trust their wine selections, as well, never having had one that didn't live-up to it's description by their knowledgable wait staff."

  • "We were a party of 4 on a Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy, but other than a just slightly longer wait for our glasses of wine, the service was prompt. We all had a different entrée; lamb chops (done perfectly) fresh mahi mahi (great) grilled tuna (generous portion) and wonderfully caramelized scallops. The restaurant was not my first choice; however, I was delighted with the dinner, atmosphere and service."

  • "Wanted to try a new place for the first time during Asheville's restaurant week and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. The place has a modern feel to its décor yet the atmosphere was both inviting and intimate. While the menu was limited for this event, the food was very well presented and tasty. The dessert sampler was wonderful. The final cost reasonable. I would go there again."

  • "We went for restaurant week and were pleased. The chicken and fish (trout) were outstanding according to our wives. The pork chops were good, a little thin and dry. The wine was very good as well as the service, we did not feel rushed as we sat and talked the evening through. We will be back again for a special occasion."

  • "We went on one of the year's coldest days--in the teens with wind. As soon as we walked in and although the restaurant is surrounded by glass, it was warm and cozy. The waitress was attentive and the food was delicious. We'll return."
