Diner Reviews
  • "Unfortunately, even though we arrived at 6 and informed the waiter that we had theater tickets, we never got to eat! We ordered around 6:15 or 6:20 and still had not received our meals at 6:55! Other tables who had ordered after we did were being served. Three different staff members came by to say they would check with the kitchen, then our waiter (who had been missing for at least 10 minutes) showed up and said that our order was second in line! A manager came by before that and said she would check with the kitchen to see what had happened, but never returned. There must have been a mixup, but nobody fessed up to it. They did, however, give us the wine on the house."

  • "A convenient location and intriguing menu drew us to the Blackbird. Some of the dishes, such as the clams, were outstanding. Others were a little odd, such as the Cajun Potstickers. My husband liked them but I thought they were too mustardy, which doesn't even fit with cajun. Although both were billed as appetizers, the clams came with a side of garlic fries, and would have been a full meal for me. My husband's ribs, though tasty, came with a bizarre bread with wild rice stuffing that did nothing for him. My pork chop was delicious, though not extraordinary. The rhubarb strawberry dessert was good, and the Treat ice creams were fabulous. We'll probably go back, as it's definitely original and different."

  • "Great ambience (the 2 chair window seat was perfect for us) - but it was the service that will bring us back. Five Star!"

  • "The batter on the fish & chips was yummy...too bad the fish inside the batter was tasteless and way overcooked, mushy. The beet salad looked gorgeous but also was without taste. The mallbec wine was the best part of the meal. 2 thumbs way down"

  • "The restaurant was packed, but I found a spot at the bar. The noise level was slightly higher than normal because there was live music. Good balance food/quality/quantity plus 2hours validated at the local parking."

  • "it took us 15mins just to decide what we wanted to start with. There were so many unusual dishes that all sounded amazing. I LOVE CHORIZO, who serves chorizo without eggs or potatoes!! Everything we ordered was amazing, the beet salad the shortrib dinner, the chorizo meatballs and deviled eggs.. and even the spice mule in place of the well known Moscow mule -- it was a hit!!"

  • "We were looking for an informal dinner spot within a short walking distance of the Montgomery Theater i.e. not an overpriced hotel restaurant like virtually all of the other choices. Tried this on a whim and was not disappointed. Excellent menu choices - not just pub food - and very attentive service."

  • "Went for the 1st time a few weeks back before our movie and everything from the food to the entertainment was a breath of fresh air from all the other bars/restaurants. We loved it so much that my friend did her birthday dinner there & the entire good loved it. The best part about The Blackbird Tavern is the ambiance...good for dates, birthdays, ladies night and so much more."

  • "Went to Blackbird tavern for a coworkers going away luncheon. Was perfect for our group of 7. The food was very tasty, served in a very timely manner and the service was friendly and efficient. They have live music at nights too which I think I will have to check out."

  • "A stroll down the alley takes you to a find. Open less than a year, the place has a variety of offerings at reasonable prices. Service was very attentive, food was done well, and we got to the show with time to spare."

  • "Nice place for a pre-theater dinner. Short walk to California Theater. Grilled cheese and short rib sandwich was delicious. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly."

  • "Very interesting menu. Only reason I didn't rate higher is that it took very long to get our check to leave as their credit card processing system was down."

  • "Had a nice dinner here with two friends before a movie. Good location not far from movie theaters. Prices are moderate which is why we picked it. All of our meals were just fine but nothing knocked our socks off. I would eat here again. Liked the atmosphere. I'd like to come back when they have music playing."

  • "The good things: the restaurant is in the middle of down town and close to several parking options and many options for entertainment are within walking distance. The dining area is very nice with large windows and seating is comfortable. The bad things: not enough menus and the ones they did have were dirty. I waited 20 minutes for my drink only to be told the bar ran out of liquor to make it. The food took over an hour to be brought out and was just ok. I ordered the salmon and it was slightly over cooked and under seasoned. Overall, we were disappointed with the long wait and blah food. If I'm going spend over 40 bucks for dinner and wait over an hour for it it should be delicious."

  • "We went Sat night after I received notice about a vocalist by the name of Michael Carter was doing Sinatra. I went on his FB page and listened to his music. He had a great voice so I was interested. This was our first time at the Black Bird and what a great experience. The, service, the food and the music was outstanding. Michael came with a quartet of fabulous musicians. Guitar, piano, string bass and trombone. Together they were outstanding. Keep your eyes out for this young man and if you like Sinatra see him. David who was our waiter was outstanding also!! We will be going back to the Black Bird Tavern"

  • "Stopped in for dinner before Sharks game. Food was good, but they need to invest more in creating more comfortable ambiance. Cafeteria-like tables and chairs. Blaring music through vey low quality ceiling speakers (had to ask twice to turn it down). With some work, could be good spot. The salmon and short-rib entrees were the favorites."

  • "We enjoyed our pre-theater dinner at the Blackbird Tavern the other night - worked out great. At 6 pm we were practically the first in the restaurant, but it quickly filled up to capacity. We enjoyed the mushroom risotto and the shrimp and grits. The wine list is small, but has some decently priced enjoyable wines. We returned to the appetizer menu for a desert of some excellent cheeses and prosciutto. We'll be back."

  • "Blackbird Tavern is going to be our new theatre or movie night go to spot for pre show dinner and post show drinks. Everything we had from the appetizers to dessert was not only well-conceived but beautifully executed. The reasonable prices and portion sizes made it possible to have a true 3-4 course meal and enjoy a wider variety of flavors, and the have some truly lovely beers that I've never found available on tap anywhere but the brewhouse (Fin du Monde and Rasputin are favorites)."

  • "If you like different combinations of flavours in your food and drink, Blackbird Tavern is for you! Their specialty drinks are very unusual, yet tasty. The smoked trout salad, big enough for two, combines the sweetness of the trout with the tart bitter of frisee. This comes with "6 minute" eggs, perfectly cooked soft boiled egg - white firm enough to cut the egg in half, with a smooth, runny yoke for dipping the trout in. The French onion soup delivered the sweetness of the onions, touched with a bit of apple butter. The beer batter fish was crispy on the outside, and tender, moist fish on the inside, and the curry fries was melt in your mouth rib beef over wedge fries, a combo that worked. Our waiter, David, was excellent. Gastronomic!"

  • "With a 6 pm reservation we should have had plenty of time to make it to the CPA by 8, but when our drink orders weren't taken until 6:30 we were sure to tell the server of our schedule. At 6:50 my drink came, and 5 min later, his came too. and because by then my husband had spoken to the manager, so did our salads. And 5 min later, the entrees. That table got crowded! There were apologies and assurances that our drinks would be comped. Feeling that we now had time to relax we ordered dessert and coffee. At 7:30, still no dessert! But it came at 7:40, with assurances that now dessert would be comped - but dessert was on the bill! The food was ok."

  • "Food is still a work in progress at this local joint with a wonderful vibe. Bread seems to be microwaved; salmon is farmed as far as we can tell; and the chicken was not high quality when I had it on Friday. That said, they try hard and have a wonderful vibe. Stick with the basics on the food (burgers, mussels, deviled eggs) and you'll do well!"

  • "We are subscribers to Broadway San Jose and looked for a quick and simple meal before the 7:30 start time. We were warmly welcomed, and the service was attentive even as the restaurant filled up over the time we were there. I'm not sure if we had a lunch or dinner menu, since the couple next to us had a larger list to choose from, but our choices (burger and fish/chips) were fine, as was the beer the selection. Dessert--warm pear cobbler--hit the spot on a chilly night, and we had no problem redeeming our Broadway coupon for a complimentary treat. We would return and will recommend it to fellow subscribers seeking straightforward pub entrees and a broad bar selection."

  • "So pleasantly surprised to try Blackbird Tavern, and find a spot with 1) dedication to quality food and service 2) NO pretentious food, or attitude; 3) menu priced so we can return often. The tavern/bistro menu is creative and offers a good variety. My shrimp and grits - Hail to the Chef, who kept is simple and did not overcook the shrimp, as so often is the case. The Smoked Trout salad was outstanding, and I suspect may become a signature dish if it is not already. There is a nice list of creative, handcrafted cocktails, and draft craft brews. Basically, Blackbird is right up our alley, (and its on the alley in downtown San Jose!) I think it will be one of our 'go-to' restaurants for its great, well-priced menu and execution."

  • "This is a great restaurant to enjoy a great meal and then stay for the live jazz music. Since this was our first time at this restaurant our waiter was very helpful in making recommendations from cocktails, entrees and dessert!"

  • "The Blackbird Tavern is a great new gastropub in San Jose. It fills in a gap in the San Jose scene. Great staff and very knowledgeable and inspired mixologist."
    Dined on 10/26/2013
  • "Food was very mixed. I loved the battered fish, perhaps the best fried fish I've ever had. The roasted radish appetizer was unique, but it needed more of the balsamic vinegar sauce. My husband was not impressed with the meat and cheese platter. He liked the stuffed eggs. My daughter liked the french onion soup, steak, and fries, but said they weren't memorable. The wait staff was very attentive when the restaurant was not full, but it took at least 3 attempts and at least 15 minutes to get a check when we were rushing to see a show."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at the Blackbird Tavern on a Saturday night. The food was great, but not overpriced. The service was prompt and friendly and the ambiance was welcoming. Definitely a hipster place, but do not hold that against them. The music may be played from LP's, but the food and wine are fantastic!"

  • "We have eaten here on 2different occasions. Both times the service was inconsistent with wait staff not checking back after food had been served and drink orders arriving after appetizers were on the table. The first time we visited the tap wines were not even listed but mentioned by our servers and you were unable to order coffee. This visit mussels were served but no spoon was provided for the delicious broth , and no plate for the shells and the waiter never returned to the table to check on us. I would have happily ordered another glass of wine to go with the main course."

  • "Has outside patio-great location. Interesting menu. Good food. Hard rolls and the coffee--not the best. But the service was friendly. However something was missing??"

  • "Four of us had dinner here last Saturday. Food was excellent from appetizer to dessert! Service was a bit slow and inconsistent. Afew things still need work: Can't buy a bottle of wine; wine on tap was quite good -- but our server was unable to tell us the label vintage year; regular coffee was not available due to a problem with the French press -- so walk down 3 doors to Starbucks & get a container of hot coffee!!"

  • "This is a neighborhood gem in an area that really needs good quality, reasonably priced food. The service was great. We both had the burger, which was very good. My only hesitation about going back for dinner is that the menu is limited and doesn't have many low-cal, low-fat options. For instance, while I figured I could go without the hamburger bun, it came with a side of fries that wasn't listed on the menu. It's easy not to order them -- or have an option of a side salad. But, it takes a lot of will power to not eat them when they are right in front of you. I would definitely go back for drinks at the bar or outside area."
