Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food and drinks. The martinis were great!"

  • "Seating oriented more towards a bar atmosphere: there are only (2) booths, the rest is raised seating on bar stools. Also, there is very little lighting. The food was OK, but nothing to brag about. They had a good list of beers including craft beers. It's conveniently located in downtown Ann Arbor. The service was attentive and kind. Parking is free in downtown Ann Arbor on Sundays. We parked in a public parking garage about (2) blocks from the restaurant."

  • "This is my 4th or 5th time to The Black Pearl and each time, I have enjoyed. They handle large parties well (this one was 14) and have a solid wine list and outstanding specialty cocktails. Shrimp Avocado appetizer is wonderful."

  • "The food is amazing. The drinks are creative. Tuesday nights starting at 8pm there is live music, and conversation gets a little more difficult."

  • "Love this place. Appetizers and martinis are second to none. Was a little disappointed with the swordfish. It was dry and tasted overcooked."

  • "I went to Black Pearl for the first time after hearing good things for a while. Unfortunately our night started with waiting for a waiter to come by the table for at least 15 minutes (it was busy but not packed by any means). Several waiters and the hostess passed by and clearly saw our absence of even water but NO ONE asked if we needed help. Finally I stopped a waiter and asked him to find out who was in charge of our table. It took another 5+ minutes to get things straightened out. Quite a buzzkill to wait 25 minutes for martinis on our girls' night out. The rest of the night was much better, food was pretty good and our waitress was knowledgeable, and attentive. I'd recommend it to a friend but not over other places with better service"

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor. I'm from the area, but had moved away for a few years. Every time I visited, my colleagues, friends and I always made it a point to eat here. We have a long-standing tradition to visit Black Pearl at the beginning of every year. The food is amazing, the ambiance is energetic, and the service is usually great. I always recommend Black Pearl to friends and colleagues."

  • "My friend and I have a fantastic meal and wonderful cocktails. I am embarrassed to say that we were running quite late for our reservation but the folks at Black Pearl were quite nice and still seated us upon arrival. This I did not expect and was quite a wonderful surprise. The fish tacos never disappoint!!"

  • "My wife and I dined here for the first time Valentines Day weekend and had a great dining experience. The food was great and prices are reasonable. Our waiter was very attentive and the atmosphere was very vibrant. I would definitely recommend making a reservation because seating was scarce. It's located in the bustling college town of Ann Arbor which contributes to its festive environment. But don't mistake this for a hipster scene as there is a very diverse crowd with professional and college alike. Highly recommend and will definitely go back again."

  • "We enjoyed a dinner out at Black Pearl. The oysters and scallops were menu highlights but the best thing was our waiter! He took great care of us on a very busy night."

  • "We are regulars at the Black Pearl. Of course, they are known for the fish tacos, but you can't go wrong with anything there, really. The grapefruitinis are just delightful -- even my husband loves them! The calamari is some of the best in town. And, the guacamole -- a must. Also -- breaking news -- a new salmon dish that is to die for is coming soon. We had tastes last night. Michael assured us it would be on the menu the next time we return. Can't wait!"

  • "We enjoyed going to the Black Pearl for dinner. The venue is unique and is great for a quiet dinner or drinks with friends. The waitstaff was friendly. We ordered the surf & turf for two which provided a great filet and swordfish. The individual of those dishes comes with some added flavor while ours was good it was plain except for the amazing zip sauce it was served with. The other surprise was no free refills on ice tea. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The cocktails here are quite good, they have an extensive and creative list. Standard prices ($9-12). Oysters were huge. The crab cake appetizer was good, but needed a bit more flavor (some herby breadcrumbs or something). Market salad was basic and fine. The fish tacos were amazing - fried but not with a ton of breading and they have a delicious spicy sauce and crunchy cabbage, onions and tomatoes. At $18 for three tacos and nothing else though, the price is a bit steep - better to get them at happy hour. Seared tuna entree was also excellent over a flavorful sesame quinoa/bean/seaweed salad. The prices are a bit high but the food overall was very good and it has a cozy but hip bar atmosphere."

  • "None of the six of us had eaten before at the Black Pearl - we made the reservation because it could accommodate our party. We were pleasantly surprised by our dining experience. The ambiance is very sensual, and our food and wine were delicious. Would return just for the fish tacos! Chris, our waiter, was great. We will definitely return."

  • "My boyfriend and I went on date night here on a cold Saturday night. We let the bartender get creative with our drinks and they were all delicious. Our food was excellent, though I am from Baltimore so I wouldn't say the same for the crabcakes-they were decent. I had the fish tacos they were great, my boyfriend had the bayou pasta, be said the same. Other than that it was great, we would definitely go back. The one thing I did not like we're the cramped tables."

  • "The food here is as good as it gets in ann arbor, and is easily some of the best in the state. The fish tacos are sublime and you find any better unless you're on a major coast, the salmon is incredible and rivals Pacific Rim's offering in the category, and the button mushroom covered, bone-in chicken is as good as it gets. The coffee cake is worth checking out as well (it comes out warm and succulent) and the cocktail list is varied and impressive, though a bit expensive compared to other bars in the area. Definitely a place you need to experience at least once if you are in ann arbor."

  • "Seven of us met up for post dinner drinks....and food. Our table was in the back which was perfect for as we were not encumbered by other close tables. The food was very good, martinis were delicious...an extremely wide variety...cucumber martins were the preferred drink of the night. A perfect night out for our just over 50 age group ;)). Our waiter, Brian, was beyond 5star. Excellent service :))"

  • "Food was good, drinks were good, but tables were high tops a foot away from each other. No privacy. Definitely not for a romantic dinner, better for happy hour with friends."

  • "Of all of the participating restaurants, we both thought that The Black Pearl had the best menu and they didn't disappoint. Everything was very good but I LOVED the asparagus. The calamari was also quite delicious. The ambience was nice and our server was great. Our only problem was that even though we made reservations via Open Table, somehow it was removed from there system. However, the server remembered seeing the name so we were able to be seated immediately. Overall, we had a great date night and would definitely go back."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for restaurant week and the service was quick and excellent, and the food amazing. My only complaints were that we were a bit cold at our table right next to the window and that the dessert was a little "meh" compared to the other courses, and we didn't even know what it was until it was served to us. However, overall I give this a solid 9/10 and would definitely go again1"

  • "If you go (and you need to go), you need to order the fish tacos. I've eaten many of them in my day, but these are, without a doubt, the best. I ate five in one sitting. Nom, nom, nom."

  • "At a first time visit during restaurant week, we were very pleasantly surprised at the friendly, fast, solicitous service, the generous portions, well-prepared, if somewhat conventional, dishes. Good music on the walls, a really upbeat busgirl who sang - very well! - while she worked ...The pasta dish was huge, but lacked any seriously tasty sauce. Trout portion generous, cooked just right. Rare in A2, the coffee ice cream (Haagen-Daaz?) was excellent. We'll be back."

  • "The black pearl sports a pretty extensive martini list but the grand daddy of them all is the strawberry balsamic. It's a must have!"

  • "Black Pearl is just an all around Energetic place to grab a drink, cozy up to bar and just gather with a group. Seating is high which I like. Then, when individuals are standing at the bar they are not towering over you."

  • "The Black Pearl has a great array of different and interesting dishes. The food had a good variety of textures and complementary tastes, which made this a fun food experience. Kudos to the chef!"

  • "Overall a very good experience. Food was well prepared and attractively served. The fish taco dish for which Black Pearl is noted was too wet (Veggies not well-drained?), but flavor was good. Waiter friendly and attentive and not over-bearing. We'll return and recommend to others. The noise level was more tolerable than similar restaurants."

  • "We made reservations since we know tables fill up quickly! I had ribs, and they as I picked up the bones, the meat stayed on the plate. Done to perfection! Martini's are the best around! We also had the calamari, which was also delicious!"

  • "My husband and I took our 4 teenagers to a fabulous Sunday night dinner here. We hadn't seen out son in 3 weeks and wanted something different and special. The food and service were both wonderful. The prices were reasonable for a nice dining place: averaged $23 per plate but came with vegetable and potato. Side salad $3, which was very good as well. My $8 glass of pinot grigio tasted much more expensive, and I loved it. (I'm picky about wine). We had such a great time in the half booth high top. Our waiter was so very helpful and friendly. Other food as it passed by on the way to other tables looked outstanding also. We had salmon, swordfish, beef-tips in asian sauce, calamari, and fish tacos. All was wonderful!"

  • "Another visit to the Black Pearl reinforced how good their food is. My wife and I shared the Crab Cake appetizer. It was nicely flavored, was almost all crab (little filling) and accompied by an excellent remolade sauce. We then ordered and had dinner - I tried the Grilled Swordfish which was cooked well. I thought mine was good until I tasted my wife's fish tacos. Wow. I've had them before and they were good then - but these were just amazing. The tacos were just the right level of crispness, the vegetables fresh and the sauce excellent. I highly recommend them over other items on the menu. Service was good - quick and helpful if a tad reserved. It was a quiet Monday night, so the place was not busy. All in all a great time."

  • "Great spot with tasty seafood, fresh oysters, varied menu. Who would have thought they'd have such good seafood in a landlocked place like Ann Arbor? Definitely worth checking out."

  • "Our group of 4 had an amazing dining experience at The Black Pearl restaurant. The food selection was inspired and the dinners we ordered (sesame tuna, fish tacos and a burger) were cooked to perfection and gorgeously presented. Service was prompt and efficient, friendly waitstaff. The atmosphere is cool, with a great martini bar complete with oriental paddle fans (you have to see this in person to appreciate) and music by Raffoul - what a voice! We will definitely be back soon. Owners Harry and Jan are to be commended for creating a true gem in downtown Ann Arbor."
