Diner Reviews
  • "We went in for dinner on Friday night. We had made reservations. We were promptly seated and addressed. The cocktails were fantastic, our server was great and the food, well, amazing!. We had the tuna appetizer and the mussels and clams. I asked my husband if it would embarrass him if I licked the bowl! For dinner we had the special, grilled wahoo over saffron lobster risotto. Need I say more. I think we were about to fight over the last bite. Then we had the warm peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, WOW. I would recommend the Bistro to anyone and will go back every time in Surf City."

  • "All meals were outstanding and even my 18 year old left full. Excellent seafood dishes. Nice servers!"

  • "Dinner was great. (Had the salmon). Love that there are gluten and dairy free options. Our waitress was fantastic. My only let down was that we had a 7:00 reservation and wasn't seated until 7:30. Worth the wait though."

  • "Being on vacation and from Cleveland (i.e., over abundance of awesome fine dining destinations), we wanted some place a bit more upscale to mostly avoid the many deep fried seafood options we came across. In short, very satisfying meal, handled the needs of our 5 and 7 year old exceptionally well, very expansive wine list with enough by-the-glass options to enable some challenging choices, food was tasty, well prepared/presented and great portion size (not too small yet not too large). Only ask would be to have a simple ice cream desert option to satisfy young children. All in all, if we come back to Topsail, we would add this destination to our itinerary indeed!"

  • "The food was very good. Side dishes included collard greens, fried okra and black-eyed peas. The service was outstanding -- very friendly and helpful."

  • "Food & wine the best. Service good, but could be a little warmer and less robotic. Atmosphere a little too noisy for my taste. Small restaurant. Great that they offer GF, V and other dietary considerations. A little pricey. Am resident so I would not make this my regular eating establishment as it seems they primarily cater to vacationers. Was surprised my drink I didn't like was not replaced. They do nothing for a birthday or other special occasion. "It's her birthday." "That's nice." I would say great for tourists, okay for residents."

  • "We will return for sure. I am recommending the Bistro to all my friends who visit Topsail and Surf City."

  • "Had high hopes for this place based on google reviewers comments. Food was over priced for the quality of ingredients and presentation. Staff could not help with wine recommendations and pairings, too casual with no dress code, flip flops, tank tops galore. I suppose I set myself up for this, was expecting a nicer sit down evening in a quiet setting with excellent service, wine, and delicious food. Instead got a beach bar with over priced "wanna-be" fancy dishes. Should have saved the gas money and stayed in Jacksonville for the night and selected one of their hundred chains from a hat!"

  • "Another great dinner at the Bistro. The menu continues to impress from the bar to dessert. There are choices for everyone with seasonal ingredients and flavors expertly presented. We are local and regulars and brought our friends - self described "foodies". They were completely impressed, constantly raving about the flavors, and unable to put down their forks. Get the fried brussel sprouts for an appetizer, Shrimp and Grits ( New Orleans meets Charleston) or any of the nightly specials (usually a fresh seafood dish), and either the flourless chocolate cake or key lime for dessert. The bar has a delightful selection of both classic and innovative cocktails for all taste - get the Daiquiri, it is a true cocktail not a tourist trap"

  • "Our family of 5 had reservations (recommended) for Friday @ 6:30. All 5 of us ordered different items and all of us declared it to be "one of the best I've ever tasted". I had the catch of the day (crab-stuffed flounder). One son had a burger, which was very good. The other son had a ribeye which my husband pronounced the best he'd ever tasted. My husband had the seared scallops, which I agree were amazing. My daughter had the caesar with chicken. The key lime pie for dessert was tasty. The calamari starter was very good. The entrees cost $20-$30. Our meal cam to about $225 with tax and tip (with only 1 alcoholic drink). Service was very good. An extremely enjoyable experience."

  • "A wonderful selection of gluten free that is farm fresh! It's difficult to eat out with a gluten intolerance, this menu was a pleasant surprise. Gourmet food and great wine options at reasonable prices. We will keep coming back for more!"

  • "Always a great experience...no matter what you try on the menu, it's mouth watering delish! Whether dining as a couple or large group, service is on point & you can expect to be impressed. They go above & beyond to ensure guests have an enjoyable experience"

  • "We enjoyed our visit to the bistro. The restaurant is small and doesn't have a fancy appearance, but the food/drinks were delicious! Our waitress was fantastic, no mistakes or empty glasses. I had the prime rib over the island salad. Our party of 7 was well taken care of and enjoyed our visit."

  • "We wanted one night out for a nice/fancy meal on our week long stay on the island and the Bistro was perfect! We had to wait a few minutes for our table- we got there early- the bartender, Kate, made us the best, freshest cocktails: a mojito and vodka and lemonade with fresh thyme. Dinner didn't disappoint. I recommend the ahi tuna app! We had shrimp and grits (perfectly spicey) and Mahi and shrimp. Key line pie for dessert with a cup of French pressed coffee. The service was attentive but never pushy. We WILL go back next year!"

  • "While the menu has a nice variety, they diminish their service with an absolute, chef-ordered refusal to make any substitutions in the entrees. For example, they won't omit grits or green peppers. A request to trade collars greens for an extra serving of vegetables was almost denied. Not very customer-concerned."

  • "Bistro has great steak & seafood entrees, veggies. Garlic Mashed potatoes lackluster...I can make better. Good wine list."

  • "The food has been great every time. The specials are always creative and fresh . The new summer menu is filled with yummy choices and lots of fresh seafood. The space is very cramped but the good service and food trump the tight area."

  • "July 5 went to dinner at Le Bistro, one person got the grouper, one salmon and I got the risotto, while all the meals were good mine was fabulous! I appreciate that this is one of the only restaurants on the island that takes reservations. I do think the decor inside could be beefed up a bit, they say the owner was a photographer at one time, beautiful pictures on the walls would be gorgeous!! Enjoyable evening!!! Thank You!!"

  • "The Bistro is a MUST on your dining out agenda. I highly recommend the Cucumber Collins or Moscow Mule (two great specialty drinks). The Bistro presents true culinary creativity in their evening specials and main dishes and providing excellent service without being intrusive on your dining experience. Try the fried brussels sprouts and the spring rolls with mango chutney. Each person ordered something different and all raved...the scallop/shrimp special was so delicious! My ribeye was cooked perfectly. I also highly recommend the risotto. Admittedly, we tasted each others meals! PS-Be sure to save room for dessert!!! If you are looking for a great dining experience I would make the Bistro a must try We will be back next year!!"

  • "Best restaurant on the Island! There are a lot of choices--local seafood, veggies, etc. Some of my faves are the Shrimp & Scallop Risotto, Ahi Tuna with Apple and Mango Salsa, Cesar Salad, Bistro Burger with Pimento Cheese...Yum! I also love their Keylime Pie."

  • "We live on Topsail Island and this was our first visit. We will definitely be regular customers. The Blackeyed Pea Collard Soup was the best soup we have ever tasted. If you go, this is a must try. The grilled mahi and shrimp were awesome. We passed on desert (watching calories) but they also looked fabulous!"

  • "As a consumer at the beach I never set the bar too high at waterfront dining. Someone did though, and they score with the gem! When I first walked in the overpowering AC unit froze my wife out, but that was the only detriment. The appetizers were superb. The country pate and the pimento cheese spread were well done. Country egg rolls had a nice tast and presentation. The risotto was perfectly cooked and my entree of shrimp and crab sauce with grit cakes was a dream. I was shocked to find such wonderful food and service at the beach. My beach trips usually suck with finding food, but The Bistro and other Topsail restaurants really make the grade for this retired chef."

  • "Fun " little' restaurant with surprisingly top cuisine! The appetizers are "to die for", especially the collard stuffed eggrolls! We have dined there numerous times and have always had great service and superb food. Bring back the fried brussel sprouts! Bon Appetit!"

  • "Great food, wonderful polite service. The sound level is a bit loud as it is small and can be crowded. The food is good enough to overlook that. It would be really great if they had outdoor seating as it backs up to the sound and would be great for Sunset."

  • "I decided to take my girlfriends here for a fun dinner out on a girls' weekend and we had a great time. Service was fantastic, special soup was delicious, and the seafood dishes were fresh and prepared well. Great dinner out."

  • "If you're looking for ambience, beautiful surroundings and soft lighting this is not the place. Its simple almost cafeteria style interior doesn't match the absolutely fabulous food and 5 star presentation. Casual, family friendly…yes, we had a screaming child for a few minutes while enjoying a cocktail, but it was Father's Day. Having said that we would still go back in a heartbeat and its a half hour from Wilmington! I had the Shrimp with crab sauce and fried Grits and my husband the Shrimp and Grits, both were masterpieces! Our friends had the salmon with collard greens and scallops and couldn't have loved it more. We shared a strawberry shortcake with thinly sliced strawberries in a balsamic sauce that's out of this world!"

  • "scallop dish overspiced, mahi overcooked and chef attempted to cover it up by blackening (ala Prudhomme) it, according to the waiter who inquired at my request as to why "blackened" was not referenced on the menu, Tables VERY close together....."

  • "Food above average but not spectacular. On time but had to wait 20 minutes even though there were plenty of empty tables. Told that the kitchen staff gets overwhelmed easily and thus they make customers wait. Don't mind waiting at the table rather that there limited seating--just give us a bottle of wine. Or, instead of making our reservation at 5:45, tell us not to come until 6. Probably will not be back even though we live on the island. Waitress, Ali, was great!"

  • "We have eaten at the Bistro a number of times and this time was the BEST. It is always excellent so it was hard to beat our last meal there (duck) but the swordfish with fresh salsa (finely chopped green apples) was incredible. It was a bit loud but the wait person calmed down the table nicely."

  • "I've had great dining at the Bistro previously, but this time I was disappointed. Had a salad with calamari and the calama was so mushy I couldn't eat it. Noise level disabled any attempt at conversation. My partner's dinner of sticky rice and scallops was very good; however, I probably wouldn't return any time soon."

  • "We have eaten here several times before and thought it was ok but worth going back. Not this time! The food looked like there was a home cook in the kitchen pretending to be a chef. Horrible and pricey. There was something so spicy on the plate with my filet (that btw, looked like a strip when it cam out) that it was unpalatable. Will not return."
