Diner Reviews
  • "The food has been great every time. The specials are always creative and fresh . The new summer menu is filled with yummy choices and lots of fresh seafood. The space is very cramped but the good service and food trump the tight area."

  • "While the menu has a nice variety, they diminish their service with an absolute, chef-ordered refusal to make any substitutions in the entrees. For example, they won't omit grits or green peppers. A request to trade collars greens for an extra serving of vegetables was almost denied. Not very customer-concerned."

  • "July 5 went to dinner at Le Bistro, one person got the grouper, one salmon and I got the risotto, while all the meals were good mine was fabulous! I appreciate that this is one of the only restaurants on the island that takes reservations. I do think the decor inside could be beefed up a bit, they say the owner was a photographer at one time, beautiful pictures on the walls would be gorgeous!! Enjoyable evening!!! Thank You!!"

  • "The Bistro is a MUST on your dining out agenda. I highly recommend the Cucumber Collins or Moscow Mule (two great specialty drinks). The Bistro presents true culinary creativity in their evening specials and main dishes and providing excellent service without being intrusive on your dining experience. Try the fried brussels sprouts and the spring rolls with mango chutney. Each person ordered something different and all raved...the scallop/shrimp special was so delicious! My ribeye was cooked perfectly. I also highly recommend the risotto. Admittedly, we tasted each others meals! PS-Be sure to save room for dessert!!! If you are looking for a great dining experience I would make the Bistro a must try We will be back next year!!"

  • "We live on Topsail Island and this was our first visit. We will definitely be regular customers. The Blackeyed Pea Collard Soup was the best soup we have ever tasted. If you go, this is a must try. The grilled mahi and shrimp were awesome. We passed on desert (watching calories) but they also looked fabulous!"

  • "Menu items are sourced from local farms as well as the restaurants garden. Everything was fresh and an excellent blend of flavors. Would highly recommend for a romantic evening out."

  • "Best restaurant on the Island! There are a lot of choices--local seafood, veggies, etc. Some of my faves are the Shrimp & Scallop Risotto, Ahi Tuna with Apple and Mango Salsa, Cesar Salad, Bistro Burger with Pimento Cheese...Yum! I also love their Keylime Pie."

  • "Good service, fine food. A fine and varied menu. We celebrated a special occasion."

  • "As a consumer at the beach I never set the bar too high at waterfront dining. Someone did though, and they score with the gem! When I first walked in the overpowering AC unit froze my wife out, but that was the only detriment. The appetizers were superb. The country pate and the pimento cheese spread were well done. Country egg rolls had a nice tast and presentation. The risotto was perfectly cooked and my entree of shrimp and crab sauce with grit cakes was a dream. I was shocked to find such wonderful food and service at the beach. My beach trips usually suck with finding food, but The Bistro and other Topsail restaurants really make the grade for this retired chef."

  • "Fun " little' restaurant with surprisingly top cuisine! The appetizers are "to die for", especially the collard stuffed eggrolls! We have dined there numerous times and have always had great service and superb food. Bring back the fried brussel sprouts! Bon Appetit!"

  • "Great food, wonderful polite service. The sound level is a bit loud as it is small and can be crowded. The food is good enough to overlook that. It would be really great if they had outdoor seating as it backs up to the sound and would be great for Sunset."

  • "I decided to take my girlfriends here for a fun dinner out on a girls' weekend and we had a great time. Service was fantastic, special soup was delicious, and the seafood dishes were fresh and prepared well. Great dinner out."

  • "scallop dish overspiced, mahi overcooked and chef attempted to cover it up by blackening (ala Prudhomme) it, according to the waiter who inquired at my request as to why "blackened" was not referenced on the menu, Tables VERY close together....."

  • "If you're looking for ambience, beautiful surroundings and soft lighting this is not the place. Its simple almost cafeteria style interior doesn't match the absolutely fabulous food and 5 star presentation. Casual, family friendly…yes, we had a screaming child for a few minutes while enjoying a cocktail, but it was Father's Day. Having said that we would still go back in a heartbeat and its a half hour from Wilmington! I had the Shrimp with crab sauce and fried Grits and my husband the Shrimp and Grits, both were masterpieces! Our friends had the salmon with collard greens and scallops and couldn't have loved it more. We shared a strawberry shortcake with thinly sliced strawberries in a balsamic sauce that's out of this world!"

  • "Food above average but not spectacular. On time but had to wait 20 minutes even though there were plenty of empty tables. Told that the kitchen staff gets overwhelmed easily and thus they make customers wait. Don't mind waiting at the table rather that there limited seating--just give us a bottle of wine. Or, instead of making our reservation at 5:45, tell us not to come until 6. Probably will not be back even though we live on the island. Waitress, Ali, was great!"

  • "I've had great dining at the Bistro previously, but this time I was disappointed. Had a salad with calamari and the calama was so mushy I couldn't eat it. Noise level disabled any attempt at conversation. My partner's dinner of sticky rice and scallops was very good; however, I probably wouldn't return any time soon."

  • "We have eaten at the Bistro a number of times and this time was the BEST. It is always excellent so it was hard to beat our last meal there (duck) but the swordfish with fresh salsa (finely chopped green apples) was incredible. It was a bit loud but the wait person calmed down the table nicely."

  • "We have eaten here several times before and thought it was ok but worth going back. Not this time! The food looked like there was a home cook in the kitchen pretending to be a chef. Horrible and pricey. There was something so spicy on the plate with my filet (that btw, looked like a strip when it cam out) that it was unpalatable. Will not return."

  • "Fabulous dinner, but when the steak ordered medium arrived and was rare it put one member of our party of three at a huge disadvantage. Sure everyone was nice about cooking it longer, but when 2 people are eating and the other one is just watching, it's just not the dining experience we had hoped for. That's unfortunate because all three meals were very very good."

  • "Food was superb and an extensive wine and bar list of cocktails. Our server, Christina, was the best...ask for her. Only negative was it's very loud, tables are very close. Could use a bit more upscale décor for the prices, & also include a salad with the meal. Everyone super friendly .Try it! "

  • "This chef just keeps getting better. New summer menu is well thought out."

  • "My wife and I ordered the evening special, a 9 oz. fillet and shrimp The vegetables and shrimp were good but the steak undercooked for my wife's taste We sent her's back, asking it to be pink inside. It was returned the way it arrived the first time, raw. It was late in the evening so my wife ate around the raw meat and left the other Our waitress was very attentive and this was the chef's fault At nearly $40 a plate, a customer should not have to work so hard to have something properly cooked. "

  • "Family friend recommended Just Baked for our Anniversary dinner while we were vactioning in Topsail this year. The beer list was robust and the ones we tried were delicious. There summer menu had just been released and everything we selected tasted great and the presentation was spot on. The staff was very friendly and welcoming."

  • "The food, atmosphere, and service were excellent. I was mostly disappointed that there were not more fresh catch options. Those that did - for the most part - had things like shrimp on them. Shrimp fishing is not sustainable, so I would like to see more sustainable options. Similarly it would be nice in an establishment like this to see more locally sourced options."

  • "The food was great. The menu choices were not your usual fare with many interesting and inviting choices. The service was excellent. The only down side was our table was really close to the other two tables. I could reach out and easily touch the diners on either side of me. I felt like the NSA was listening in on our conversation the whole time my wife and I were talking. I expect a little elbow room when eating at a fine dining restaurant. There are a limited number of tables. I would recommend a reservation. The online reservation on the web site was very easy to use."

  • "The Bistro has become my favorite island restaurant whether it be for a hamburger or a gourmet meal. The atmosphere is enlivening. The staff is friendly and eager to please so that you can have just the right kind of dining experience with your sweetheart or a group of friends that are glad to be together. The food is spectacular and the selection though not large is varied with regional favorites included. I had grilled salmon with sweet potato hash and collard greens. Each food was prepared in a special way unique to the Bistro. The Bistro is a comfortable special occasion with family and friends."

  • "The air conditioning was freezing. Everyone was complaining. My shrimp and grits were swimming in grease. This was my second visit. The first was fantastic. This time was a real disappointment."

  • "We ride our bikes here several times a month - they always have exceptional food and drink specials. The service is always top notch and we have enjoyed getting to know the staff over the past few years. Great local find in Surf City but make sure you have a reservation during peak seasons!"

  • "I was very pleased with everything about this special place. The staff was very professional and very knowledgable! Our waitress Alissa was awesome! Even was able to thank the owner for such a lovely evening! I love cooking and this met my high expectations! Just sad I don't live in the area or state!:( Plan on visiting topsail island again in the future! Look forward to visiting here again! Btw it's worth the drive from Wilmington peeps to eat here! "
