Diner Reviews
  • "Nice bistro in Topsoil Beach, expensive for families and no kid options."
    Dined on 8/24/2014
  • "Unlike some of the reviews, we had great service and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. It did get a bit noisy as the restaurant filled up, but we still were very comfortable. I highly suggest getting reservations. Remember that good food takes a bit longer to prepare. I would also like to say that there were not enough entrees without a bream base, which I am highly allergic to. We would come again as it is close to our new home"

  • "A locals wish list restaurant but could not get a desirable time to dine on a last minute. I now know why as the food was delicious! The mussels and clams with the bread was wonderful! Wait staff were very well informed of the menu which was a delight, foodies will love it."

  • "The service was very good. The food was delicious and the wait staff was good. The soup was average but everything else was fine. The noise level was high and a quiet intimate dinner would be hard due to the loud background. Otherwise we were very pleased with our dining experience."

  • "food not memorable--canned beans on "Farm Fresh Salad"?? breading made everything taste the same. ribeyes were fatty and house made potato chips were limp, lifeless and no flavor."

  • "We arrived about 20 minutes before our 7:00pm reservation and sat at the bar. The bartender Katie was very upbeat, friendly, kind, and quick. She offered her opinions on drinks and dishes and was very easy and enjoyable to talk to. After about 30-40min of sitting there one of the hostesses came over to us to acknowledge she hadn't forgotten about us she was just waiting for another table to clear out. Awesome service, no restaurant ever "checked up" on me before to ensure they knew about my reservation. We had Matthew as our server and he was awesome too! Very friendly, funny, and helpful. The food that me and my fiancee had was the best food we have ever eaten. Not even kidding. 10/10 Perfect dining experience!!!! Thanks So Much!!!"

  • "Service was lovely but food was not good. We ordered two kids steaks and they both had a spicy seasoning that our kids could not eat. This was not explained upfront and they do not have a specific menu for kids. I ordered the fish special which was grouper fish and it was extremely tough and seemed more like monk fish. It was honestly disgusting. My husbands dish was good, which was the scallops in a curry base. But because my fish was so disappointing we left with a "bad taste" and certainly would not return."

  • "Great food! Serves all local North Carolina foods and wines. Huge wine list with so many options! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely return on our next visit to Surf City"

  • "Dined at bistro Saturday August 17...two couples had 730 reservations. Seated 745 (per our ticket 748) ordered 4 cocktails, bottle of champagne, 2 apps, 3 soups and 1 salad, 4 entrees and 1 dessert...all of this with a bill on our table at 905...where we were told there was another party who had 900 reservations. If we could kindly pick up our Bottle of champagne/drinks and carry it to the tiniest little bar area (really) that would be great. So shocked and really astounded we actually did it. As we processed and after my husband left a handsome 22% tip we thought wow...so rude and in poor judgment. We're locals and visit here monthly, sorry to say never again! The focus is not on service simply flipping tables!"

  • "Not first visit however probably our last. The quality of food does not match the price. As a family of excellent cooks we appreciate quality and happily pay higher prices for deserving food. House-made potato chips (shared appetizer) were undercooked and already cool when delivered to the table. Corn-crab bisque flavors were muted and lacked the vibrancy of fresh corn. Salads were good but predictable - nothing unexpected or inventive. The tuna on an entree salad was OK - but had had a much better piece of tuna at Sears Landing. The best dish was the Wahoo special, the fish was well prepared, the sweet potato risotto interesting. We expect entrees priced at $25 and up to be creative and complex - unfortunately not our experience."

  • "I believe this is the best retaurant on the island. Never had even an average meal. All have been outstanding. A bit loud, but the food and the service are top notch."

  • "Everything we had was delicious. The wait staff was great...thank you Mathew. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will definitely be back!"

  • "We had a great meal here. We were visiting form NY and our brother in law lives in hampstead but had never been it was great. I had the Sweet Tea Salmon which was perfect. My husband had the filet amazing and my brother in law had the chicken dish. Eveything was cooked ,flavored and prepared perfect. Presentation was also very nice. Christina was our server and excellent we were never looking for her and she provided us with whatever we asked :)"

  • "We enjoyed the food very much but felt it was very pricey. We did not even receive fresh bread without being charged. I am not sure why that should be extra. I also felt that if you advertise that you are using local foods then you should cook local foods! lentils and kale are local?that is what's in at the moment. Where were the butterbeans , squash and corn that is in season. As well as flounder and grouper. Waitress was very nice as well!!"

  • "Their food is outstanding!! If you're vacationing on Topsail Island this is a good place to go for a special meal."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "The shrimp and grits at The Bistro are the best on the island, off the island, and anywhere else we've ordered it. The tasty, spicy vegetables and andouille are a great compliment to fresh shrimp and perfectly cooked grits. Their other fish dishes are equally well prepared and they have some delicious appetizers and salads. Their service staff is knowledgeable and efficient. The restaurant is very small, so make a reservation."

  • "A wonderful Rib-Eye Steak Salad at the bar is a great Sunday evening meal. Kate, the bartender, provided excellent service and menu suggestions."

  • "The Bistro at JustBaked is absolutely wonderful. We ate here on a date while on vacation and it was perfect. The food was some of the best I've ever had. I couldn't stop talking about it later in the week and wish I could go back. My husband had the ribeye and it was quite possibly the best steak either of us have had. We shared an Ahi Tuna appetizer that was out of this world. The spices were delicate and the balance with the apple mango salsa was perfect. I had shrimp and butter poached crab and am still dreaming about that dish. The service was great- attentive without being overbearing and even noticed I was cold and offered me a shawl. This place is 10 out of 10."

  • "Found this spot this in September and the food was wonderful. It did not disappoint when I returned this August. The Maui with shrimp was grilled and seasoned perfectly. The shrimp and scallop risotto was creamy and flavorful. Also enjoyed the calamari with a spicy mustard dip and crab dip with crostini. The portions were generous. The wine list was long with many choices to please everyone. Our server was new and seemed nervous but another server helped him through the evening to smooth out any difficulties. The tables are very cramped and noise level high but the food is definitely worth it. Best restaurant on the island!!!"

  • "This is a very nice restaurant and we love having a place that's upscale and will take reservations. We did have kids arounds us who were noisy and this is not a restaurant for small children. Don't get me wrong, we have 8 grandchildren and love kids but sometimes we seek a dining experience where it will be quiet and conducive to conversation."

  • "The food is amazing. Specialty cocktails are delish. The service was excellent. We enjoyed ourselves so much on Thursday evening that we took a 9pm reservation for Friday night. Reservations are definitely a must. Wonderful local, farm fresh, savory meals! I want those fried brussel sprouts right now..."

  • "Make reservations!! Everything was outstanding, from start to finish. Made reservations and had to wait a few minutes. Watched them turn away countless walkins with no reservations. Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "This is clearly our favorite restaurant on Topsail Island annd within 20 miles for that matter. The cuisine is very creative and always beautifually prepared and presented. Our waitress (Alissa?) was superb. This is the second anniversary in a row that we have enjoyed there"

  • "We had a wonderful evening at the Bistro. We enjoyed drinks and the calamari appetizer in the bar followed by a great dinner. The wait staff in both the bar and dining room were knowledgeable and attentive. Good wine list. Finished off the evening with French press coffee and shared the flour less chocolate torte. Would highly recommend. Reservations are a must."

  • "The food was great and the service was pretty good, but I was really disappointed we had to wait to sit at our table until our friends got there. The table say there empty while we waited so it didn't make any sense. The restaurant ended up losing out on a little money because my husband and I probably would have ordered a drink while we waited, which we didn't want to do standing in their tiny entry. If it weren't for that, they would have gotten 5 stars."

  • "One meal good (salmon) other MEAL (rib eye) ordered Med came rare--recooked tough and grisly."

  • "Why go here? The very well prepared and trendy dishes. It's basically the opposite of the Breezeway. The menu is short and fairly original, while the wine/beer list is huge. We started with the low-country egg rolls and the French onion soup (both great). Then we had the shrimp+mahi mahi and a vegetable platter. We liked it all, but the shrimp were the best. Appetizers and salads are priced normally, while entrees are $20-30. One issue: The air conditioner was right over us. We asked about this and they raised the temperature, but still having a draft over your $30 plate is stupid. Ladies, bring something to cover yourselves. Also they offered a 5% discount for paying in cash (effectively this removes the tax). Nice."

  • "We went in for dinner on Friday night. We had made reservations. We were promptly seated and addressed. The cocktails were fantastic, our server was great and the food, well, amazing!. We had the tuna appetizer and the mussels and clams. I asked my husband if it would embarrass him if I licked the bowl! For dinner we had the special, grilled wahoo over saffron lobster risotto. Need I say more. I think we were about to fight over the last bite. Then we had the warm peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, WOW. I would recommend the Bistro to anyone and will go back every time in Surf City."

  • "Dinner was great. (Had the salmon). Love that there are gluten and dairy free options. Our waitress was fantastic. My only let down was that we had a 7:00 reservation and wasn't seated until 7:30. Worth the wait though."

  • "Being on vacation and from Cleveland (i.e., over abundance of awesome fine dining destinations), we wanted some place a bit more upscale to mostly avoid the many deep fried seafood options we came across. In short, very satisfying meal, handled the needs of our 5 and 7 year old exceptionally well, very expansive wine list with enough by-the-glass options to enable some challenging choices, food was tasty, well prepared/presented and great portion size (not too small yet not too large). Only ask would be to have a simple ice cream desert option to satisfy young children. All in all, if we come back to Topsail, we would add this destination to our itinerary indeed!"

  • "Food & wine the best. Service good, but could be a little warmer and less robotic. Atmosphere a little too noisy for my taste. Small restaurant. Great that they offer GF, V and other dietary considerations. A little pricey. Am resident so I would not make this my regular eating establishment as it seems they primarily cater to vacationers. Was surprised my drink I didn't like was not replaced. They do nothing for a birthday or other special occasion. "It's her birthday." "That's nice." I would say great for tourists, okay for residents."

  • "We will return for sure. I am recommending the Bistro to all my friends who visit Topsail and Surf City."

  • "Had high hopes for this place based on google reviewers comments. Food was over priced for the quality of ingredients and presentation. Staff could not help with wine recommendations and pairings, too casual with no dress code, flip flops, tank tops galore. I suppose I set myself up for this, was expecting a nicer sit down evening in a quiet setting with excellent service, wine, and delicious food. Instead got a beach bar with over priced "wanna-be" fancy dishes. Should have saved the gas money and stayed in Jacksonville for the night and selected one of their hundred chains from a hat!"

  • "Another great dinner at the Bistro. The menu continues to impress from the bar to dessert. There are choices for everyone with seasonal ingredients and flavors expertly presented. We are local and regulars and brought our friends - self described "foodies". They were completely impressed, constantly raving about the flavors, and unable to put down their forks. Get the fried brussel sprouts for an appetizer, Shrimp and Grits ( New Orleans meets Charleston) or any of the nightly specials (usually a fresh seafood dish), and either the flourless chocolate cake or key lime for dessert. The bar has a delightful selection of both classic and innovative cocktails for all taste - get the Daiquiri, it is a true cocktail not a tourist trap"

  • "Our family of 5 had reservations (recommended) for Friday @ 6:30. All 5 of us ordered different items and all of us declared it to be "one of the best I've ever tasted". I had the catch of the day (crab-stuffed flounder). One son had a burger, which was very good. The other son had a ribeye which my husband pronounced the best he'd ever tasted. My husband had the seared scallops, which I agree were amazing. My daughter had the caesar with chicken. The key lime pie for dessert was tasty. The calamari starter was very good. The entrees cost $20-$30. Our meal cam to about $225 with tax and tip (with only 1 alcoholic drink). Service was very good. An extremely enjoyable experience."
