A word from The Bird & The Bear
Known by generations for her hospitality, proprietress Elouise Adams Jones, a.k.a. Ouisie, serves an eclectic collection of Southern & Mediterranean foods with an excellent wine list to match. The Bird & The Bear gives Ouisie’s much-appreciated eclectic tendencies even more freedom. It is a little more casual than her San Felipe restaurant, Ouisie's Table, with lots of Southern flair and no shortage of surprises - in both menu and decor.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first time and the food and service were great. We had a party of 5 and everyone loved their starters and entrees. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We were there on a Friday evening and I was surprised that the restaurant was empty. I read some other comments about the food taking a long time and yes, the entrees (not the salads) took a while to come out of the kitchen which was surprising for how few customers there were. For us though it was nice as we were able to visit and talk which made for a relaxing experience. Good find..I will be back."

  • "We have been here many times and tonight was the best service we have ever had at the Bear and Bird. It was not very busy for a Friday night and was very pleasant. Great place for lunch also."

  • "Arrived with my guest on time and was told that the restaurant had been rented out for an event and they would not honor my reservation. Open Table and The Bird and Bear need to be in communication!"

  • "The food and service just don't seem to be what they were when the restaurant initially opened."

  • "I took my out of town friend for brunch/lunch. We ended up ordering non-brunch items that weren't too memorable. Service was ok. I think the waiter was a bit distracted with a group near by. I'm a bit hesitant about going again. I have gone to dinner here before...several times. The food is not always consistent. However, I'm willing to give it another try. Maybe I need to order their "specialty.""

  • "The restaurant looks great, and the menu and food descriptions also look good. However, it took an hour for us to receive our food (which it was lunch and there really were only a few other tables there), and when we received the food, it definitely was not the quality that we were expecting. We were a group of 10 people, and probably 1/2 of them weren't impressed with the food. It's almost like they tried to make it too fancy by adding certain things, and yet didn't add much seasoning to other dishes."

  • "Our waiter was very slow with everything. However the food was amazing."

  • "Our waiter was nice, but difficult to understand and kept forgetting things we ordered such as one of our entrees and what drink we ordered. Escargot and calamari apps were just ok. Nothing special. Steak was tough and my boyfriend's snapper was drowning in so much butter that neither of us could stomach it. The manager apologized and offered to replace it, but nothing else really sounded good on the menu and we has lost out appetites. The restaurant was more than half empty at 8:15 on a Friday night, which is never a good sign. We will not be going back."

  • "7 family members including 3 generations dined early Sat.evening for a b'day dinner. Good food, good service, special recognition of b'day girl (her 73rd) and menu choices that appealed to teenagers, parents, and grandparents. Lots of delicious desserts as well as wine, salads, and entres."

  • "My wife and I tried The Bird & The Bear for the first time on Valentine's Day. I would like to try again on a less busy day; it was a bit crowded and thus loud. The table was also too "deep" (keeping us far apart) to hear each other over the noise. Lastly, the service wasn't smooth. We were offered a different table's food. Perhaps just new waitstaff?"

  • "This was a good spot to talk with family/friends over good food with great service. I had the green eggs and ham, it wasn't anything to write home about but it was good. It was more a great spot for conversations, not too loud."

  • "I had been wanting to try The Bird and the Bear for a long time now and finally went with my in-laws. It was over the Valentine's weekend so we expected it to be busy. However, we never felt like it was a crowded restaurant. Our server was on top of it, and had a great sense of humor! He was very attentive whenever we needed refills on water or wine. The food was SOOO yummy! From the salad to the entree to the dessert. (Which was a little heart shaped cheesecake! So cute.) The entire experience was a thumbs up! Plus I scored points with the in-laws for choosing this restaurant! ;)"

  • "My wife had to send back her shrimp and grits because they were so extremely salty. They brought a second plate that was acceptable. What was advertised as a "filled red snapper filet" proved to be simply a fish filet with sauce on top. I had specifically asked the waitress about this "filled" description before ordering (such things are usually termed "stuffed"), but she insisted that the filet was cut in half and "filled" with crabmeat stuffing. It wasn't !!!"

  • "9 people group but we ordered quickly. Late with drinks. Food really late and orders mixed up. No real effort to rectify everything. Waiter seemed new but no one really managing. Food was ok but not great despite menu looking good. Will not return."

  • "My wife and I made reservations for Valentine's Day. We had an early dinner and they had a "special" menu . I have never eaten there before, but I have eaten at Ousie's Table a few times. The food at both places was a real disappointment. I don't know if they just aren't good, or restaurants like Underbelly and Corner Table are just so good that the bar is too high. Food was barely average and the bathrooms were nasty, which is always a bad sign."

  • "Took my girlfriend here for Valentines, told her she would probably like the cornish hen, based off knowing what she typically eats. It was so dry it was chewy. Meaning, that bird was dead in the window for awhile. Server was nice, but I mean come on, how do you screw up chicken on valentines? It was around 9, so not like they were slammed."

  • "The restaurant wasn't that packed yet my server was very slow. Fried oysters and BLT were decent but even my fries were soggy. Probably wont be coming back."

  • "I have dined at The Bird and The Bear several times and each time I have been pleased. Friday was the exception and I am not sure I am going to return. The restaurant was only half full. It was approximately 15 minutes before anyone came to take my drink order. My dinning companions were late. When the waiter came he had no affect and his service to us was minimal. He did not come by and check on us, he did not offer coffee or even to show us the dessert menu. It was as if we were invisible. The food was just passable. Sadly dissapointed."

  • "The food was not good and small portions. Worst Paella I've ever eaten. I found 5 small pieces of calamari in what looked like a vegetable medley."

  • "I chose very wisely when I decided to take my blind date here. The food was excellent and the wait staff was very attentive but did not hover either. The ambiance is very private and the setting allows for good conversations to take place. I think this place may have earned me a second date ;) Only downside was that my date had to wait awhile to get her car back from the valet but that really is no fault of the resteraunt."

  • "I had the crab cake benedict.. I've had better crab cakes & better benedict. My boyfriend had the country fried steak. The meat quality wasn't that great & it was dry & lacked seasoning."

  • "It was definitely a place for ladies to lunch the day I was there, but I was attending a business meeting with three other associates. They noise level was such that we could caring on our meeting with any trouble. The wine was great and the food was very good. The service was attentive but not overpowering. Will go back and have already recommended it to others."

  • "took my family here as a christmas gift. Food was terrible for everyone. I don't mind paying for good food, but it was terrible. Waiter had no clue what was going on, he was new. Would NOT recommend. However, GREAT place for drinks!!! Stellar wine menu and stunning atmosphere. So disappointed in the meal……. I REALLY wanted to love this place :("

  • "Presentation was poor and one dish was served with bits of paper mixed into the salad. We were never served water and had to ask many times. The service was ok until the wait staff was informed of the paper and then we were completely neglected. I will not go back."

  • "I took a friend to lunch to celebrate her birthday. Ouisie's was booked, so we decided to try The Bird and The Bear. We had the Texas crab cobb salad. It was delicious and the service was excellent. I will definitely return."

  • "I've been here for dinner a few times, which is always good. Lunch time was not overcrowded, quiet enough to talk. Valet parking and quick but unhurried service made it convenient for a business lunch. The food is delicious and the staff are gracious. I would definitely return for lunch."

  • "After making an early dinner appointment to avoid the crowd and noise level, we arrived on time and had a great seat at the back. The water was attentive. The house wine was not available and a substitute was provided. The problem was the constant high pitched noise that could be heard constantly, over the period of the entire dinner. We notified the waiter (in case he could not hear what we were hearing) and he said he would let the manager know. The noise never stopped. It was truly overwhelming and did not allow us to enjoy the dinner. But - the salmon and scallops were delicious - but the irritating high pitched noise as less than appealing. You need to address it!"

  • "The food presentation was very good. The meals were quite spicy; more than expected from the menu descriptions or from discussions with the waiter. The dishes were overwhelmed by the toppings. I added a note to the reservation: "a very special birthday for my wife"; there was nothing special at the restaurant (no one even said "happy birthday")"

  • "The food was excellent, bloody Mary's spicy and very good, wine list was disappointing. The restaurant is lost in the quirky décor. If you don't mind that then this is a great place for good food."

  • "My brother and I went to the The Bird and The Bear after I'd spent the day looking for restaurants that would be open on Christmas Eve late evening. This was my first time dining there. The food was excellently prepared but was a bit bland for my taste. The ambiance and service made up for that however. It was a fabulous atmosphere and I was very happy I chose to go there especially on such a special night. The service was impeccable and our waiter whose name eludes me right now but I do remember that she was from Kazakhstan was the sweetest. The restaurant is a definite do over!"

  • "I selected the Bird and the Bear from the reviews online and location. We live in The Woodlands and spent our holidays in Houston with family. The service and food was wonderful. I would highly recommend. I had the shrimp and grits, my daughter - a tenderloin, and my son seafood paella. For dessert we split a chocolate specialty that was also delicious. The restaurant had decorated for the holidays and lights were everywhere making the entire restaurant beautiful. We made reservations early due to church on Christmas eve (5:30) and afterwards the restaurant was full so I would suggest reservations."
