A word from The Bird & The Bear
Known by generations for her hospitality, proprietress Elouise Adams Jones, a.k.a. Ouisie, serves an eclectic collection of Southern & Mediterranean foods with an excellent wine list to match. The Bird & The Bear gives Ouisie’s much-appreciated eclectic tendencies even more freedom. It is a little more casual than her San Felipe restaurant, Ouisie's Table, with lots of Southern flair and no shortage of surprises - in both menu and decor.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Dinner at 6:30pm Sunday, restaurant empty only 3 tables occupied. 4 guest, received appetizer with salad. Entries were good, Molten Laval cake center not heated hot enough to enjoy. Complained to waiter resulting in no billing adjustment."

  • "Empty restaurant, no ambiance and food quality moderate"

  • "The wait staff is very accommodating and friendly, the food fresh and creative. The salmon salad was delicately cooked and full of flavor ."

  • "There were many fewer people than I expected for Sunday brunch....but it was steady. Our server and other staff were attentive. The food was good (not the best ever, but good), and I was pleasantly surprised by the bottomless-ness of the mimosas and frozen bellinis. I was pleased with the variety of food options. The atmosphere was quite casual....(the World Cup was on the TVs at the bar). There was a cool 1 man band playing a variety of Caribbean beats on his drum collection. On the way out I noticed that they have $20 2-course steak night on Monday.....I'll bring my mom back to check that out."

  • "Fantastic food and service. All of my family and friends that attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves."

  • "The seafood gumbo was delicious! It contained a bit more tomato than my usual gumbo, but the flavors were balanced perfectly. The red snapper and rainbow trout were both cooked and seasoned well. However, both were served with the skin on. It wasnt very problematic to remove the skin that was fried and crispy on the parmesean crusted trout, but it was very time-consuming and messy to remove the skin from the sauteed red snapper that was served rolled around the veggies. The skin on the red snapper was soft & harder to spot at times because it is white in areas. I am basing my rating on the flavor and quality of ingredients, but the skin is a HUGE detractor. Service was great until a couple of large groups of ladies arrived."

  • "On our first visit, this was a little disappointing. Food was just average...service just average...had to ask for several items even though we were the only table in the restaurant on a Sunday morning."

  • "The food was great and the restaurant is really interesting as well."

  • "The service was lacking. We ordered drinks ( 1 martini, 1 diet coke and 1 sparkling water). We received the soda within 10 minutes. The other two drinks came in 20 minutes after our appetizers arrived. The waitress apologized saying the bartender was busy. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant. The manager offered to give us a free dessert. This was a nice gesture but she was presenting the dessert tray in the middle of our dinner. We asked her to wait until we finished our dinner. Overall, the service was poor considering how empty the restaurant was for a Sunday evening."

  • "There were buckets throughout the restaurant to catch the water coming from the ceiling. There were also flies! The paella was good but the trout had no flavor. The mashed potatoes were really good."

  • "I had the best egg Benedict for brunch. It was yummy!!!! We also ordered the bottomless mimosas. We had a great time! Our Service was great as well."

  • "I picked this restaurant for my birthday dinner because I have never been disappointed and once again the meal was incredible. There is just so much thought put into every dish. Cooked perfectly. The cerviche was too tomato based for me but the snapper was excellent. The desert melted in my mouth. The waiter was attentive and had excellent recommendations. This is one of the best restaurants in Houston."

  • "Service was slow and sporadic . Food was so so. We had a large group for father day and did not feel welcome. Errors were made in order. Overall we did not enjoy the experience."

  • "pretty marginal experince for brunch. 40-45 min wait from the time we ordered to when the food came and the meal was not great when it finally came. unfortunate as we've had better experiences there."

  • "Nice Table, Great Friends, Food was good, wait staff was eh...at best Dissappointed with lack of knowledge about wine. Nice wine list, but lack luster support for it . 1/2 price bottles of wine on all Sundays EXCEPT for the day I went."

  • "So we decided to go to The Bird & The Bear on a Wednesday evening the week of Father's Day so we made a reservation. When we arrived we quickly realized "reservations for what". There were 5 tables waiting for food. Our food was not worth the pricing. We ordered the kids shrimp dinner with a veggie and fruit. When the plate arrived there where 3 shrimp and a pile of mashed potatoes. The waiter returned to inform us they were out of broccoli so he returned with a plate of asparagus and sliced pears. Shall I continue, the mango salad was made with a head of lettuce and the paella lacked flavor and was just a blob of yellow rice with English peas and diced bell peppers (tasted like I could have made it myself). Bottom line......Never Again!"

  • "Overall not bad. Our table had the shrimp and grits, lamb chops, pork osso bucco, chicken fried steak, and the "damn" eggplant. The shrimp and grits and lamb chops were pretty good, but nothing else was spectacular. Would try the place again."

  • "A great evening for a group of 16. Everyone raved about the food. This group eats all over the world and we all enjoyed it. "

  • "This restaurant is convenient if you are located in the Kirby or River Oaks areas. Service is very good. The dishes we had were tasty, quite large portions and well cooked. If I could find fault at all, it would be the limited choice of wine by the glass. Wine in general is quite expensive, and at $10 - $15 per glass one is not tempted to have more than one. The wine list in general needs to be a bit more diverse. "

  • "I generally don't like to write negative reviews. First of all, the restaurant was virtually empty. Surprising for a Friday at noon! We stood at the reception desk a full five minutes before someone noticed we were there. Bar service was OK, but it took forever to get our food. I could see it sitting on the pass through from the kitchen, but our waitress was nowhere to be seen. It sat there for a good 5-10 minutes before it was brought to the table. My sandwich was hot but dried out. My friend's chicken dish came out looking like a limp puny thing plated with undercooked vegetables. It was colorless, and she said flavorless as well. I've had nice dinners here before, but doubt I will ever be returning. Expected more from Eloise."

  • "We celebrated my mother-in-laws 80th birthday with family from in-town and out-of-state. The brunch menus could not have been better to accommodate the 10 different tastes of the crowd. The table was very comfortable for the crowd. The staff was very attentive and professional. The sea food dishes where some of the best we have had anywhere. I would go back for another family gathering or for a romantic evening with my wife. Did I mention that the "bottomless Mimosas and Belinies" were bottomless!"

  • "The restaurant was mostly empty for brunch. Even though our waitress only had two tables, it was painfully slow service. She was frequently across the restaurant talking to other staff instead of waiting on us. Seafood omelete my wife had was dry. Not quite what we expected. Will not return"

  • "Really have nothing bad to say at all. Initial contact with our server was a little behind, but other than that, it was awesome. Food was great, everything cooked perfectly. Wine list exceeded my expectations. Being a catering chef/bartender myself, I was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. Would definitely recommend. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Houston."

  • "2nd time I was going there but not as good as 1st time. One friend took lamb chops and specified medium well. They came almost rare. I tried the "escargots" but they are really average. The cream brought with the coffee was spoiled !"

  • "I had been disappointed in some earlier visits to this restaurant, but tried it again at the request of the person whom I was entertaining. I had a wonderful kale and scallop salad that was perfectly prepared and simply delicious. "

  • "It was a beautiful way to end a day of celebration with my family. The atmosphere was peaceful, elegant, and relaxing. All of those in attendance were gracious and courteous making all of us feel that we were special. From the appetizer to the dessert, all was exceptional. Thank you for making my Mother's Day one to remember."

  • "We came for brunch on Mother's Day, granted its a busy day but the restaurant was not at all full when we arrived. Firstly, they did not have reservation head count correct and did not have 2 high chairs ready per our request ahead of time(twice). Took a while to get our high chairs, took over 20 min to get our menus that we had to ask for & were all missing a kids menu page that other menus. Service slow in general and unattentive. The food- could have gotten the same dishes at fast food chains for half the price. 3 of us ordered Caesar salad with crab meat. Crab meat was minimal, lettuce was browning and clearly out of a packet, dressing was tasteless and salad had nothing much else to it. We all sent them back. Disappointing experience"

  • "We decided to try The Bird and the Bear because it's Ousie's Table sister restaurant in Upper Kirby our old neighborhood. The food and the service were excellent. We chose the day's specials. I had the turf (buffalo) and she had the surf (red snapper). The Vuelve ala Vida ceviche appetizer was great. We also had a Jack Daniels cocktail that was very good. This is a place for great food on Upper Kirby if you love Ousie's style cooking."

  • "We had Easter Brunch at this restaurant and were impressed with the extensive choice selection for a special menu. There were even vegan entres! Prices were reasonable and the dessert options were fantastic, too. "

  • "Very enjoyable. Service was outstanding which was good considering our prior Easter try at flagship Ousie's. Setting not as nice as the original but acceptable. Food was very good - crabcakes excellent, salmon excellent - though the fish tostada's were a bit under seasoned with one tortilla that was virtually impossible to cut though. Still a very enjoyable Easter Sunday and a place I would recommend / return to."

  • "Good but nothing special. In a town like Houston, I don't know if this bird will fly."

  • "So glad we chose the Bird and the Bear for our Easter brunch! Not only was the brunch menu fantastic, they had a cute and creative kids' menu that our children enjoyed. There was also a very special touch: a florist made Easter coursages for my mom and daughter and delivered them to our table. It made the entire experience very special!"

  • "Our New Orleans relatives were thoroughly impressed with the food and the whole atmosphere - the red fish was the best they'd ever had - the asparagus was perfectly cooked crisp tender - overall unique menu, hard to choose just one entree - staff was very attentive, friendly - we felt very special - a definite thumbs up!"

  • "Ok, I went here once before and loved this place. I ordered the Caesar salad with crab. It was wonderful. I went back. This time was so bad. The salad had 2, yes TWO, leaves of brown old lettuce, a cup of dressing and crab and other fixings. Two leaves of lettuce and those leaves weren't even good. I had to send the two leaves of lettuce back. The lady at the next table didn't send hers back but she didn't eat it either. I don't know what has happened to this place. Here is the worst part, they marked me as a "no show" so I couldn't even review it at first. Talk about adding insult to injury. To his credit the manager said it should have never left the kitchen so I at least credited them for the service. "

  • "This was our first time and the food and service were great. We had a party of 5 and everyone loved their starters and entrees. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We were there on a Friday evening and I was surprised that the restaurant was empty. I read some other comments about the food taking a long time and yes, the entrees (not the salads) took a while to come out of the kitchen which was surprising for how few customers there were. For us though it was nice as we were able to visit and talk which made for a relaxing experience. Good find..I will be back."
