  • "The ambiance and the history of the Bengal Lounge is enough on it's own to attract a hungry crowd, but their Indian lunch buffet is truly outstanding! The best I've had in Canada. The fresh flavours and variety will appeal to everyone. The mix of salads, meat dishes, vegetable dishes and the papadums rock! It's always a must-do dining experience when I'm in Victoria. Complementing the food is a fantastic Fairmont service and a very thorough list of drink options. Soak in the atmosphere of Bengal Lounge while you sink away fully fed in your comfy leather chair."

  • "Be sure and ask to be seated at regular chairs around a table, or you will find yourself in the same predicament that we did for our meal. Seating way too low to be comfortable. Granted the ambiance of the Bengal Lounge is one of aged beauty. Ageing gracefully (like the rest of the room), is not shown in the leather chairs. Since we booked ahead for dinner the staff should have known to seat us at better table / chair combo for a meal. The Curry Buffet was delicious and the service was great, (other than the seating location), just what we expected!"

  • "The Indian buffet was delicious! Very reasonably priced and a wonderful atmosphere!"

  • "I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who is visiting Victoria. The food was good, but I recommend it not for the food. The old world grace and charm of the room is what makes it. The informal, but knowledgeable Canadian service standard was also welcomed. There are countless restaurants that have chic interiors; it is nice to find one that has retained its original character and remains well maintained. Although we prefer truly fine dining in general, our party agreed that the dinner was good enough, and the setting was worth the visit. On a prior visit, we dined at the Empress Room, which is both beautiful and has outstanding food and wine--highly recommended for all."

  • "For my birthday, I asked to go to The Bengal Lounge for the curry buffet. It was wonderful! The food and service were great, and the jazz music in the background was very enjoyable. When my husband mentioned to the waitress that it was my birthday, suddenly a special dessert showed up -- capping off the evening. Thank you for making my day even more enjoyable."

  • "Very elegant and at the same time a cosy atmosphere. The buffet offers a good choice of delicious Indian food. Would like to repeat the experience and have already recommended it to our friends."

  • "Dining here is a special night out. The buffet is a lovely taste of india ... back to the colonial days of this grand room. A yummy exotic treat. We had lovely night lingering in the wingbacks watching the nasty weather from the cozy lounge."

  • "We celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary, everything was perfect - from the table seating, to the service to the surprise anniversary cake and champagne. We enjoyed a beautiful romantic dinner for two by the fireplace, we would recommend the Bengal Lounge if you are looking for a perfect evening with someone special"

  • "The food was good but the chef seemed a little too fond of cardomom as much of the food was domininated by that flavour. Having said that my companion really enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. We both appreciated the excellent and attentive servers"

  • "I have enjoyed The Bengal Lounge for the past 15 years. This year was as wonderful as the previous 14 years. Victoria and The Fairmont Empress are an annual destination each February. The atmosphere is wonderful, the drinks wonderful, and the food perfect. The Curry Buffet is memorable, however, this time I thoroughly enjoy a selection from the regular menu. They have amazing healthy choices. I cannot wait to return!"

  • "Good food at a reasonable cost and service good and unobtrusive but cost of drinks exorbitant. Wine by the glass, very little choice under $15, half litres and bottles far too high, a standard sized Martini at $14."

  • "I Love the Bengal Room. It is the first place I think of going when I want to do something really special. The Indian Buffet is really superb in every way, and the ambiance is casual yet classic. I never feel rushed. It lends itself to a special meal with a good friend. I wish the drinks were a bit more reasonably priced!"

  • "Our second time here, and the food was great. Mango chutney and onion chutney which we loved last time had a more bitter taste, but everything else was great. The best Indian food in town, very comfortable seating, great service, great views."

  • "Three generations of our family have enjoyed the Bengal Lounge - for drinks, to treat visiting friends, and for the best curry in town."

  • "An excellent meal! The cocktails were a little expensive but delicious."

  • "We have eaten at the Bengal Lounge on many occasions. We go for the ambiance and the relaxed casual dining experience; the surroundings and furnishings of the lounge are really spectacular. The food could be improved a lot especially given the prices - 3-4 star food at 5 star prices. The curry buffet at lunch time is a great bargain. We had the buffet in the evening - still a good bargain for $32. The cocktails are wonderful, but pricey - from $13-19 each. A glass of wine is also $13. Someone asked me if I would still go if it was just another restaurant located elsewhere - I said no."

  • "Good variety of food choices, food quality excellent, drinks are pricey. Location excellent for an afternoon walk-about. Ambience delightful and tables far enough apart for enjoyable conversation."

  • "This curry buffet offers an excellent variety of traditional Indian favorites for first timers and curry lovers alike, in a comfortable colonial atmosphere. All the dishes are well prepared, fresh and true to taste. The lamb curry and sambals were standouts for us and the buffet was well organized, clean and attractive. The meal is an excellent value as well and the Bengal Lounge is well worth a stop on your visit."

  • "We are a 30s couple living nearby and were looking for a romantic restaurant for a special occasion. We were impressed. The atmosphere was very romantic with large fire place burning. They had a talented live jazz singer and piano player the night we were there. The high back chairs and indoor plants make the tables for 2 quite private even though it is a big restaurant. Our server was excellent and the indian buffet was delicious and very good value for the $32. And the empress hotel is impressive in itself with all its gorgeous architectural details. Overall excellent quality where you can spend lots on fancy cocktails if you want, or just go for dinner and both be pleasantly full for under $100."

  • "We were given a gift certificate by our children for Christmas. We chose the buffet dinner of Indian cuisine. The food at the buffet is good but not great. It is quite bland and does not have much of the great indian spices some other restaurants have. Having said that, there is plenty of choice in the buffet. The Bengal lounge is very relaxing and has the atmosphere of old English luxury. We enjoy the lounge very much. Our server was very attentive and delightful. It was not our first time at the Bengal lounge and we will probably go there again. Beautiful hotel and a good feeling to be there."

  • "A frequent lunch choice. Good food, pleasant service and no problem with our sitting in their comfortable wingback chairs and talking for a couple of hours while the business lunch groups come in and out quickly. I can't do the Indian buffet at lunch - too much food - but lots of people do."

  • "I feel like I paid for the experience more than the food. We had the lunch buffet and it was pretty tasty, but I've had better elsewhere. The lounge itself is gorgeous and the whole experience is very throwback fancy."

  • "I have enjoyed the buffet in previous years and have recommended it to friends but this year the food (e.g.,including butter chicken and other meat stews) was not warm. Because I look forward to this buffet at Christmas each year and lunch for two, including two non-alcholic beverages, was almost $100, it was somewhat disappointing ."

  • "We've been going to Victoria for years visiting family and friends. We've eaten at the Empress, but for one reason or another never tried the Bengal Lounge. We went there on our most recent rip and really enjoyed it. It will now be a permanent addition to future visits. The curry buffet is worth the trip to Victoria. Very good, very authentic with some west coast additions that enhance it. We lived in Bangladesh (East Bengal) and know South Asian food pretty well, so this was a very pleasant surprise. Ambiance was as you would expect: dark wood, leather chairs and a tiger skin on the wall. Service was excellent. And to top it off, good value for money."

  • "My husband to the restaurant on Christmas Eve and on Christmas. What we found do delicious was your "fish and chips" and your non-alcoholic drinks. The fresh halibut in your "fish and chips" fish was memorable :)"

  • "The Bengal Lounge is like stepping into a time warp; with British and Indian influences. The tiger skin over the fireplace is impressive, if a bit distasteful for someone who might prefer to see the majestic beast in the wild. The lunch buffet had many interesting choices and nothing was too spicy for those with a more delicate palate. The seasonal additions of turkey with accompaniments was a nice touch for the holidays. The little individual desserts were more elegant than what one usually finds on a buffet; messy remnants of a whole cake cut into little bits. The ginger creme caramel was divine! The service was attentive without being invasive. It was a pleasant experience."

  • "I love coming here. I do it mostly for occassions but should come more often. It is always the way when you live in a place that has treasures like this. I do recommend not eating for a week as you will want to take full advantage of this amazing line up of food and service. You cannot beat this. I dare you."

  • "As always the Curry Buffet was awesome, butter chicken very tasteful. Many other items on the buffet as well. Mouthwatering as well, a good selections of deserts to finish off a delightful lunch."

  • "The Bengal Lounge allows you to take your date, your family or workmates on a culinary adventure back to the days of Hilary with a Himalayan feel. The theme is old classic leather, animal print, earth tone colours with a rare style of slowly bowing ceiling fan that creates an exotic atmosphere of calm excitement."

  • "Good food, though expensive for what you receive. If you go here, just remember that you're paying for the atmosphere, the return to the British Empire of days gone by. Just sip a manhattan and relax and you'll have a wonderful time."

  • "Went for the curry buffet. The food was fresh and very good. The decor of the place is old world colonial and very beautiful. Service was excellent. It's not the cheapest place but worth it for special occasions."

  • "The food was tasty. The only thing I woukd improve would be the size of the desserts. They were a bit on the skinny side. Of course that will help to keep me skinny."
