Diner Reviews
  • "In 2013, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with friends at the Belvedere Room. To say we were "under-whelmed" would be generous. The service was horrible, we waited 1.5 hours for our food, which was lackluster at best and the best explanation the restaurant manager could give was "I'm sorry, we're just slammed!" Really? So, $563.74 (before tip) later, we left with a bad taste in our mouths...literally. Fast forward to anniversary 41...we decide to give the Belvedere Room a chance at reedemption....and they came through with flying colors! The wait staff was heroic, the food was absolutely excellent, and when the bill came, we were very happy diners! It's expensive, but it is well worth the price for a fine dining experience!"

  • "Wonderful food and service at this fine dining spot! Would recommend for a memorable evening out."

  • "Very impressed as this was my first visit to the hotel and restaurant. The service was both professional and relaxed at the same time. The food was excellent. Have recommended and intend to return. Thank you."

  • "I took my brother and my mother here for my brothers birthday. It was by far the best restaurant experience I have had. The room is very elegant and sophisticated, very calming classical music plays at the perfect noise level for conversation. I was impressed from the start. We didn't like the table we were placed at, but they had no problem moving us. Our servers name was Rebecca and she was very attentive, yet she didn't hover. She gave us our time to ourselves, but seemed to all ready be at the table when we needed something. Everyone was helpful. Waters were refilled just in time. My brother & I had the tenderloin. It was delicious. Easy to chew, and perfectly seasoned. Had to have them thank the Chef. My mother had the lobster tail."

  • "The Belvedere Room was once a great restaurant, but my experience on Friday 8/15/2014 was less than expected. The service is still top notch, but the food quality and presentation were not up to its past standards. Wife's lobster hadn't been "pre-pulled" from shells, making it difficult to enjoy. My tenderloin, ordered medium rare was past medium well. The twice baked potato was unappetizing and (unknown to me at the time) larded with bacon fat. "Seasonal vegetables" were over grilled small cubes of zucchini and other squashes. Rude guest actually insulted my adult son about his thin appearance on the way out. Miss the old Belvedere Room."

  • "The food was mediocre. I got the lobster tail and it was cooked just alright. The mashed potatoes were to die for. My boyfriend got the rack of ribs and it didnt come in a rack. The ribs came in the size of a small box. It tasted like beef stew meat, not the typical taste of a rack of ribs. The only thing good about the meal was the mashed potatoes."

  • "We held a dinner here for 12 people. The staff went out of their way to make it perfect! The food was very good and service was great!"

  • "This was a great experience, if you're wanting to go somewhere special or nice it's the perfect place. It's got a grand entrance, high ceilings, long dramatic curtains, really pretty décor and lighting. The wait staff was very accommodating and friendly. The menu is pretty upscale, scallops, risotto, duck, that type of thing. I had the ravioli with black truffle butter appetizer, it was good, I could have had more truffle flavor but it was really good. The scallops were great, and the complimentary bread and butter was pretty great also actually. The prices weren't too bad for a nice dining experience, about $25-30 a plate if you'd like to keep it simple, and then $10-15 per appetizer. Overall I definitely recommend checking it out."

  • "Who knew Bakersfield had such a sophisticated restaurant? Great ambiance, service, and food. The bar scene was hopping on Friday night, yet the restaurant was serene. Our server, Justin, was very personable and indulgent to our noisy bunch."

  • "It was our first time dinner. The food was outstanding. (lobster) As was the short ribs. However my husband mentioned there was not enough short ribs on the plate. (big eater). The waiter was good. But could put a little more of HIS personality in the experience. He did know the menu and how food was prepared. Enjoyable evening"

  • "We celebrated our 13th Anniversary here. I got the Tomahawk cooked the Padre way and my wife the shrimp pasta. We were both very happy. The service was great. They gave us a very tasty complimentary dessert specially made by the chef, a lemon custard with pistachios, blond brownie and chopped strawberry. Perfect for the summer. It was very quiet and fancy... not a place for kids. I would come again for a special occasion."

  • "Possibly the most tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked (medium-rare) rib eye that I have ever eaten. Our waiter (Matt) was impeccable and took great care of us. The ambiance is great."

  • "Dining room was very warm. We asked for the AC to be turned on. Finally felt some air as we were leaving. Food was fair. Small portions, high prices, very average food. I have had better at a local diner for 1/3 of the price. Service was good."

  • "My wife and I arrived a few minutes before 6 p.m. and we were immediately led to a table for 7 in this cavernous restaurant. The hostess then disappeared for the next two minutes and after she finally returned I asked for a smaller table. She apologized for seating us at the wrong table and moved us to a corner table for 2. I had the duck which was presented with three different jams. Not many restaurants serve duck so if you're in the mood for duck then this is the place. Otherwise I'd recommend something else. My wife had the short ribs which had a smokey flavor. Better than the duck but I've had better short ribs elsewhere. The server was very attentive though we were the only patrons for most of our meal and the restaurant was not busy."

  • "Our dinner was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and well informed. There was a problem in the bar and drinks were slow. They comped our desserts. Also a very noisy ladies table next to us. Overall, a positive meal. "

  • "The food at the Padre in the Belvedere room was just "ok". We dined at the Padre on a Sunday evening. I don't know if the regular kitchen staff was off duty because the food was not at the same standards as before when we have dined on a Friday or Saturday. The service was great and the ambience very nice. l try them again, just not on a Sunday. "

  • "The greatest compliment I can give a place in Bakersfield is that it reminded me of another place in NYC or San Francisco. The Belvedere Room staff certainly give diners their greatest effort and the food was much better than it really had a right to be. For a town that lacks much restaurant culture this place nails it down fairly well. The overall experience easily puts it in the same league as the fine dining experiences in the above mentioned cities, just, perhaps, not in very high standing within that league. Beware the Valet parking, not a good experience was had at that juncture, and it is unfortunate that the Belvedere room must suffer from the rest of The Padre."

  • "Had consigned myself to Bako having plenty of OK restaurants and above average ethnic food (Mexican, Thai, Indian, Greek ...) when the Belevedere was recommended. Everything about it was first rate ...a 4 star restaurant in Bako!!!!"

  • "The Padre Hotel is a magnificent building on 18th Street in Bakersfield. You walk in to the lobby and immediately see 2 vibrant bars, one of which turns into the hottest club around. Walk a little further and you enter the Belvedere, behind plush curtains. It is a grand room with lovely decorations that would remind one of the elegance of the 40's and perhaps before. The music completes the ambiance. The food was very good starting with a very nicely prepared pork belly appetizer. I went with the salmon entree but I think I got a bad piece which they immediately changed out for a steak. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. The wild mushrooms were superb. Excellent server with a charming and professional demeanor!"

  • "This was my second trip to the Belvedere Room. I had a similar experience both times. The ambiance is nice as you enter. However, the room is very noisy making it difficult to carry on a conversation with friends. If I am dining in a nice restaurant, I want to feel relaxed and be able to converse easily. The staff did a nice job and the food was acceptable but it did not wow me or my guests. Eating at the Belvedere is an expensive evening and I have eaten dishes with more complex tastes at lower price venues - even in Bakersfield. "

  • "Delicious!! Bravo! Look, if I were rating a restaurant in, say, LA, SF or NY, the food would get 4 stars (still a notable rating), but this is clearly the best dining experience one can find in Bakersfield. We had a group of 9, and all were pleased. I must say that the seafood (the trout special and the salmon) was delectable AND fresh (I was delightfully surprised by this, as having grown up in Bakersfield, fish this fresh and well prepared is a rarity). Finally, the servers were great, and the host, Paul, was helpful from the booking to addressing inquiries re wine, champagne etc. This is where I will take my parents to dine whenever I return to visit. (One constructive comment: the bread could be improved, but it wasn't bad.) "

  • "They make a better filet mignon at Cafe Med, but there is no competition any place in Bakersfield as far as ambiance goes. The formal dining room is one of the most beautiful I have seen anywhere, and I go to New York every year and have been to Paris, Italy, and London."

  • "My two daughters (7 and 11) and I met my mom and her husband for dinner on the Saturday night before Easter. We were fortunate enough to have Heather as our server. She was very attentive, cheerful, knowledgeable about the menu, and delightful with my children. The food was delicious! My steak was cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were Heavenly. Heather was always there when we needed her, but didn't hover. There were other wait staff that assisted her and they were all awesome. We dined early, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. I would definitely go there again. "

  • "Second visit in a row where the food underwhelmed. Was a great restaurant the first couple years it was open but appears to be steadily declining since. Now the norm is for them to be out of items, prepare orders in incorrectly and basically ruin an otherwise great night. My steak was over cooked while my pregnant wife's steak came out rare. Sides are no longer to die for and are average at best. We would have killed for average on our last visit. Definitely not worth the price any longer and more importantly, not worth using a babysitter for."

  • "Service was excellent. The food was only so-so. My daughter's chicken was really dry almost inedible. My vegetables were way undercooked. The steak was okay. For the price I won't go again."

  • "The Padre Hotel is a must visit for any traveler to Bakersfield. Great food, ambiance and service will be your reward. We had dinner in the elegant Belvedere Room. The lamb and grilled shrimp dishes were excellent. The cheese appetizer was wonderful. The apple dessert was an fine finish. We celebrated our 25th anniversary while another table celebrated their 35th and a third table was a marriage proposal (She said, "Yes!"). Obviously, Bakersfield and the Padre Hotel are good for romance!"

  • "Hubby, myself, and another couple had dinner at the Padre before a concert at the FOX theater. The Belvedere room is beautiful. We started with shots and drinks from the bar ordered through our young, quick, awesome waiter. He was awesome. Had variety of steaks, Mary's organic chicken, chefs veggies and twice baked potatoes are memorable and outstanding! Followed up with cheesecake which was again memorable and outstanding! Then we went to the bar and had more drinks, and our waiting got out bar table for us. Great place, great staff, and spacious, clean bathrooms. 5 stars from us!"

  • "What a gem. Superbe meal in a spectacular room, from a well crafted menu. Service was excellent - just the right level but never obtrusive. The Wagyu Beef Gnocchi was incredible - dense and perfect flavors, everything cooked to perfection. I'm sure the beef ragu took 12 hours to reduce. The pork belly was similarly inventive but simple and incredible including the celery root reduction with peas - magical. Salads, once again perfect ingredients with exceptional seasonings and dressings. Wine list is carefully chosen and excellent, and reasonably priced for the offerings. The only let down was the espresso machine had been turned off by the time we finished our dinner at 9:30PM. Please fix this!"

  • "Solid effort by the staff at the Belvedere Room for Valentines Day. You can usually expect an overpriced limited menu at most Bakersfield restaurants on special occasions.Yo my surprise they offered a special 3 course meal at a great price. The lobster dish was very good and a very nice size tail, tremendous value! I must commend the new (realtively) chef on his progressive and ambitious menu. Brad Wise would be tough to follow. I still consider it the leader in downtown Bakersfield for a fine dining experience."

  • "We went to the Belvedere Room for our anniversary. The waitstaff seemed in experienced and despite the fact that there were not many people dining, they were inattentive. My entre had to be sent back because it was too salty to eat. (I ordered halibut.) By the time my second entre came out, my husbands dinner would have been cold. To add insult to injury the waiter admitted that chef thought the sauce on the halibut was salty but served it anyway."

  • "Bakersfield is not a foodie town. Thank goodness for this place, truly a culinary oasis. Service was prompt and attentive. Wine list complete but not overbearing - perhaps a bit pricey. Grilled Caesar was excellent. The sea bass with truffled asparagus and smashed potatoes was extra yummy. Less impressed with the apple tart - crust was too thick and reminded me of a McDonalds hot apple pie. Ambience was like a country club in a bygone era. Solid 4 stars in a major metro; 5 stars here."
