A word from The Beauty Shop
Chef/ Restaurateur- Karen B. Carrier famed for -The Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Do Sushi, Another Roadside Attraction Catering opened Beauty Shop Restaurant in what was once said to be Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the facade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, a bar replaces the wash sinks, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Carrier is a mad genius of sorts. The restaurant's motto is "Look Good, Eat Good," and while the place makes you want to look good, you will eat good at The Beauty Shop. The menu is widely varied ~ a down -home American stance with world-beat tints and edges. The Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It screams "Memphis", yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit but doesn't stream beyond the pale- It makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun; part of the animated crowd and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that? Continued

  • "Just always have a great time when we done here. Lynsdey has waited on us several times and she is always great! Very bubbly and always smiling. The food is amazing as usual and we just live this place!!"

  • "The Beauty Shop is a very eclectic restaurant. It is vintage with an artistic flair. It is not you average eatery. I would suggest going there for the cool experience as much as anything. It is however quite tasty and has a cool midtown memphis vibe. The food is hands down amazing but it is a little expensive."

  • "Food was great. Very inventive menu. Atmosphere was great. Benedict's were very tasty as was the Big Boy Bloody Mary's."

  • "This was our first time to visit The Beauty Sop, although we had heard lots about it. Food was very good, (and somewhat unusual) as was the service. We definitely will go back."

  • "This was my second visit. It was awesome! The service was fantastic and the food was as good as the first visit that inspired this one. I would recommend all to try this great restaurant."

  • "I had never been to The Beauty Shop and had really looked forward to it. Made reservations for a special friend of mine and her daughter. Great place. Great service. Wish I had gotten the girl's name so I could mention her. Wonderful bloody Mary's and mimosas and larger than most, which was nice. Don't order the Thai steak salad though. Not good at all. Steak had a bitter burnt taste. But I will definitely go back and try something else. My friends loved the salmon sandwich."

  • "Loved the experience. Service was a little slow and our drink order was not right. Completely wrong drink for myself and served 2nd beer in same glass for my husband. :( Overall it was a good meal/evening"

  • "Everything about the Beauty Shop is top-notch - the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The menu is edgy and original, with plenty of variety for the discerning diner. Great place! "

  • "My husband and I enjoy sitting at a table outside and watching the midtown neighborhood come to life. This is not a place for your traditional brunch items, so come willing to try something new. I highly recommend the lemon pancakes."

  • "Really groovy vibe and food to match. Perfect steak with excellent seasoning and a chef's herbed butter to come back for. I ate at the bar. Bartender was very attentive; sincerely interested in how well I liked my food and overall pleasant. I'm from Denver and travel a ton for business. Memphis, you have a world class restaurant. Visit it!"

  • "My wife and I went looking for a cool hip spot for dinner and we were not disappointed! The kitsch hip beauty parlor environs were cool and the hip and lively cocktails from the bar were a tasty beginning to our experience. Our server was excellent and the food was top notch. My wife had the swordfish special....she loved the chimichurri and salsa. I had the sea bass off of the regular menu. It too was exceptional. The figs were a perfect compliment to the acid in the dish. And, it was cooked perfectly. For dessert we split a lovely light coconut cake and the dark chocolate and sea salt shake...both were a yummy treats. We both highly recommend the Beauty Shop."

  • "We had recently been to brunch at the Beauty Shop for a holiday and were very happy with our experience. This time, I was disappointed. The Easter brunch menu had lots of options and I wish I could have ordered several entrees; however, the Mother's Day menu left me without any intriguing choices. I ended up with something that was just so-so. We were seating in the Bar DKDC section which was surprising since I requested a highchair in my reservation. Overall, not what I've come to expect from the Beauty Shop."

  • "We made a reservation there for a Tuesday night at 9 PM (which is late for Memphis) and got there some 10 minutes late. The staff was very accommodating; the cocktails were creative and well crafted and the food was just delicious. The place is funky and thinking that Priscilla Presley had her hair done (back in the day) there makes it much more interesting than Graceland! "

  • "We loved The Beauty Shop! Great food, great service, fun atmosphere. Everything was declicious. Creamy burratta and warm veggie salad--what flavor! Barramundi was so well prepared. We also ordered EVERY SIDE on the menu. And then dessert too. "

  • "Food was decent, service was not great, drinks were terrible. Sangria was especially bad. It is not hard to make sangria decent. Neighborhood crowd was friendly and nice, best part of the restaurant was the patrons."

  • "As usual, our meal was fantastic. I always particularly enjoy the starters. The pork carnitas and tuna carpaccio were delicious. My husband had the whole fish and was thoroughly pleased with it. "

  • "The title says it all. Dinner took over 2.5 hours. Our waiter had too many tables assigned (I think he was doing the entire restaurant). "

  • "Our party of six enjoyed a terrific Easter brunch. The menu had so many wonderful things for breakfast & lunch that it was hard to decide on what to order. Start with the beignets served with raspberry sauce, then I highly recommend the pizzette, a flavorful egg dish with salsa & guacamole. Our service was attentive, with coffees and sodas refilled with precision timing. The atmosphere is fun (smaller parties can sit with the hair dryer chair) and not too noisy. The price was amazingly reasonable, considering the specialties offered. We will definitely go back for breakfast or lunch, regardless of whether it's a holiday or not."

  • "The Beauty Shop really makes the CUT with me. From the COLOR to the STYLE of the place everything was perfect. The CLIENTS in our party were pleased with our service. It will be on my PERMANENT list of favorite spots in Memphis. It was a HIGHLIGHT of our wedding weekend."

  • "Everything about the Beauty Shop makes it worth enjoying over and over again. The charm of the vintage salon décor is balanced by contemporary light fixtures and organic artwork. The bar is an inviting location, with pleasant and attentive bartenders and a great selection of specialty drinks. But everything else is overshadowed by the creativity and excellence of the food. The menu, while somewhat limited, makes the selection process difficult, because everything sounds great. And the actual food exceeds your expectations, very well-thought-out combinations of flavors that are happily unexpected. And for the dessert lover, there are a vast variety of choices. The Beauty Shop is definitely a favorite that should be a regular treat."

  • "We had great food and service. Started with Tuna Carpaccio, entrees were Peking duck with blackberry sauce and one of the specials - mushroom ravioli. All were very good. Desert was a toffee milk shake and Cinnamon Mexican Chocolate Chile gelato. Both were great. Lots of interesting muni items. I recommend it."

  • "a nice local restaurant that has a good mix of atmosphere and menu, chef has very high skill of using herbs and fruits to mix into the dishes."

  • "We always enjoy coming here. The decor is innovative but not trying too hard. The staff was attentive and friendly. We smiled, they smiled. The bartender whipped up a surprise non-alcoholic drink for me; the host asked us to wait a bit although we had reserved a table and were on time. The reward was the best table in the house, in one of the original hair salon booths, perfect for a romantic dinner. The place is a little loud but that gives a great sense of privacy. Tuna Carpaccio appetizer was terrific. Sea Bass and Peking Duck entrees were both very well prepared and presented. Mango Blueberry Sorbet dessert had lots of attitude. The chef here is a genius. Crisp, fresh and crunchy flavors are everywhere. Delicious."

  • "Normally, I really like going to "Beauty Shop", but this was not a good night for our group. One of my friends was served a mixed drink that was incomplete; this same friend had an uncooked corn on the cob served to him; another has to wait too long, twice, for drinks from the bar; I had the teriyaki steak salad which was sliced WAAAAY too hot and would have returned it to the kitchen, but it wS already late. I got through the meal by eating bread. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer or more apologetic. It was definitely an off night. I t would be good to add a few acoustical elements to absorb se of the sound as it's really loud."

  • "I proposed to my wife at The Beauty Shop and we have been there every year for 9 years. We love the food and ambience. They have great cocktails and it is one of the few places in Midtown that I still love. If you get the opportunity to eat during the day I recommend eating on the sidewalk. On the weekends it is a great place to people watch."

  • "Good selection of brunch menu items. Welcomed very friendly at the door. Waitress was satisfactory, but perhaps too busy as she didn't seem to listen 100%. Meals were good and had a nice presentation. I will return, but do hope for a different waitress/server."

  • "Food was ok. Went for brunch after church and the pancakes tasted like box mix. We ordered a side of bacon and they kept bringing it out before the rest of the meal was completed. Very crowded but the servers were nice. I may give them a second chance on a regular day."

  • "After reading the amazing reviews on opentable, we decided to give this place a try, we ordered mainly appetizers (chicken wings, calamari, carnitas, and short rib tacos), none tasted good. We also ordered the lamp chops and it taasted good but the size of the chops was much smaller than any other place I ve been too. Service was great though and that s the only reason I gave this place 3 instead of 2 stars"

  • "Second trip here. First time, just got dessert and sat outside - service terrible, food good (not great.) This time was for dinner. Overall pretty bad experience. Very expensive, and food only OK. We had duck appetizer and soup de jour. Then wife had chicken confit and I had lamb chops. None had much flavor, and sides weren't worth eating. Service was horrible. Seats are incredibly uncomfortable, and we were asked to squeeze our table even closer so the waiters could get by us (it was just my wife and I, and we barely weight 250 lbs combined.) The awkward seating meant we didn't stay around for dessert. Overall, incredibly disappointed - worse dining experience in years. We certainly won't be back or encourage anyone to go."

  • "We went for a group birthday dinner and had a great meal with great service in a fun atmosphere! I had the pasta special of the 3 Meat Tortellini which was excellent, although, I will say the portion size for the price was small. Indulged in the deserts and had the strawberry cake which was excellent and the blueberries on the side was a nice touch! Would recommend highly!"

  • "I love this place! My husband and I enjoyed a nice, relaxing night out without the children. I sat in a beauty shop chair - complete with a dryer hood above me! The food was really good. We ordered the guacamole as an appetizer, which was okay ... but then my meal came out. I had the petite filet with a maple glaze and wrapped in bacon. TO DIE FOR. But I think my favorite thing was the french fries cooked in truffle oil. They were so good. We both enjoyed a Moscow Mule and some wine. I wish I had left room for dessert because they looked amazing. Next time I'll just order truffle fries and dessert!"
